Witkin and his associates have done extensive work on the relation of various perceptual tasks to broader personality dimensions. An avenue opened by this research which was of particular significance to this paper concerns the relationship between field dependence-independence and the individual's sense of separate identity. The more articulated the cognitive style, the more there is a manifestation of a sense of separate identity which includes such things as an awareness of needs and feeling which the person recognizes as his own and as distinct from others. Since many drugs which are abused by man are taken orally, it was desirable to develop a method suitable to quantitatively and reliably measure oral self-administration of drugs and their effects on behavior in experimental animals.

Water deprived rats were trained to lick for drug solutions (4.34 ul/lick) and bar press for food on a Fixed Interval (FI) 60 second schedule and press another bar for secondary reinforcements on a Fixed Ratio (FR)-5 schedule as three concurrent operants. Non-discriminated responding was inconsequential. An appropriate drug solution was substituted for water or the drugs were injected intraperitoneally before the session. For …

This study analyzes the cost-production relationship of trap and hand line fishing in Puerto Rico. A model of the fishing family firm is designed which is similar to the traditional neo-classical model of the fishing industry. The catch functions, of the Cobb-Douglas type, are estimated using the single least squares methods. Tests of technical efficiency and tests of price efficiency are then conducted to establish if some groups of fishermen are more efficient than others and to verify if the fishermen maximize their profit, given the technical coefficients of the catch function and the level of the prices.

Two problems concerning fluoride in sea water were considered in order to advance the understanding of the chemistry of fluoride in the marine environment. Anomalously high fluoride concentrations have been observed at some locations in the North Atlantic Ocean. If these anomalous concentrations continued to exist they could provide an opportunity to examine some of the geochemical processes of fluoride in sea water. Considerations of the geochemistry and physical chemistry of fluoride in sea water are hindered by an inadequate account of the interactions of fluoride and sodium.
