Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sea water solubilizes certain classes of hydrocarbons (Boehm, 1973). Several chemical and biological consequences of this solubilization phenomenon were explored, Experiments on the solubility behavior of No. 2 fuel oil showed that hydrocarbons can be dispersed in water in a soluble, a solubilized (colloidal micelles), and a particulate (accommodated) state. A fractionation of hydrocarbon mixtures (e.g., fuel oil) in sea water occurs due to the differences in the solubility behavior of the various classes of hydrocarbons within the mixture.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine a model of interacting with life situations which does not carry with it the restrictions implicit in the masculinity-femininity-androgeny concepts. However, the model includes positive aspects of behavior generally imbedded in the masculinity- femininity concepts. This model utilizes David Bakan's (1966) concepts of agency and communion, modifying his description of these modes of interacting and positing a complementary (completing, non-conflicting) relation between them. An agency/communion theoretical model was developed which emphasizes the potential for balance between the modes. Problems with the traditional gender dichotomy were discussed. This dissertation investigates the expansion of the Chilean fisheries focusing on the processing and marketing activities for seven fish species that represent over 90% of the catch and for two groups of the remaining fish species. A review is made of the current condition of the Chilean fisheries, its expansion potential and some possible expansion alternatives. It is established that there exists an ample potential for the expansion of the catch and physical production of fishery commodities. Particulate Matter In Surface Seawater: Sources, Chemical Composition, And Affinity For The Sea-Air Interface, Gordon T. Wallace Jr.

An adsorptive bubble separation technique was used to examine the ability of bubbles to transport particulate matter in surface seawater samples. A substantial fraction of the particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) could be recovered in the froth generated by this technique from both estuarine and open-ocean surface waters. Recovery values were lower in samples taken during periods of high productivity. C/N ratios of the particulate matter recovered in the froth were generally not significantly different from the particulate matter not recoverable by this technique. The planktonic amphipods Parathemisto libellula and P. pacifica coexist in coastal waters from southeastern Alaska (56° N) to the south-eastern Chukchi Sea (70° N). Observations on distribution, reproductive cycles, diets, metabolism, and starvation tolerance contribute to understanding this case of congeneric coexistence.

Samples were collected monthly from September 1969 to October 1970 in southeastern Alaska, from May to September 1969 in the southeastern Bering Sea, and in September-October 1970 in the southeastern Chukchi Sea. Respiratory metabolism and starvation tolerance were studied in winter-caught amphipods from southeastern Alaska.
