Predicting Mathematics Performance: A Structural Equation Model, Linda N. Bruno

The relationships among personality and socialization factors that may contribute to mathematics performance were investigated using structural equation modeling. Five nested models were examined: a full model, a mediational model, a model eliminating the mediator, a regression model, and a model combining the significant paths from other models. Preliminary analyses (i.e., MANOVAS, follow-up univariate ANOVAS) revealed that men reported significantly higher math self-efficacy than women. Evaluation of the structural models identified the full model as the best representation of the data. We investigate the boundedness character, the periodic nature, and the stability behavior of solutions of three difference equations.

Jean M. Auel's popular novels, The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses, are examined via theories of political thought (history, economics, power), feminist theory (oppression, sex/gender roles), and popular literature's (genre) appeals to various 80s readership communities. Chapter Two draws from historical interests in women's myth to show that 70-80s religious and anthropo-archeological revisionism promote an 80s goddess theory in support of 70- 80s feminism; nonetheless, from a 90s vantage, Dani-goddess theorizing is problematized by universalism, teleology, and gender stereotyping. This study attempts to understand more about how to quantitatively assess longitudinal change within the Transtheoretical Model applied to the area of condom use among college students. A total of 215 sexually active male and female undergraduate students completed both assessments one month apart. Measurement development was conducted on the Condom Use URICA scale, which was then used in a cluster analysis. A four cluster solution was reliably replicated across two random samples (R²=.99), and the clusters were then examined in terms of their external validity using MANOVAs. A novel method for in situ preparation of injectable biodegradable microspheres from the copolymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) without incorporating unacceptable organic solvents is described. The delivery system is a dispersion of PLGA microglobules ("premicrospheres" or "embryonic microspheres") in an acceptable vehicle mixture (continuous phase) and whose integrity is maintained by use of appropriate stabilizers. A solution of PLGA. triacetin, drug, PEG 400, and Tween 80 (Oil Phase 1) are added dropwise with continuous homogenization to miglyol 812-Span 80 solution (Oil Phase 2), thereby inducing phase separation (coacervation) of PLGA and forming PLGA microglobules (containing the drug) dispersed in the …

The main focus of the study was the construction of a new scale for measuring religiosity among Muslims. Two other existing scales were also used. Utilizing 169 (108 male, 61 female) Saudi Arabian Muslim college students, an exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed on a set of questionnaire items intended to measure Islamic religiosity. Six components were extracted, which represented the religious dimensions of practice, societal value of religion, belief in central tenets, personal need for religion, reliance on practical guidance, and unquestioning acceptance.

Play, particularly exploratory play, can be viewed as the arena in which a series of interactions between a child and the environment occur. However, children with developmental delays appear to be less able to fully engage in exploratory play and utilize the environmental information that such play provides (Krakow & Kopp, 1983). The present study was undertaken to provide information on the relationship between father involvement and multiple dimensions of a child's self-concept. The Father Involvement Scale (FIS), a measure of father involvement and substitute father involvement, was constructed for use in this research. Included in the study were 104 sixth and seventh grade middle school children (ages 11-14). Each were administered the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale (Bracken, 1994). Scores from the FIS were used to divide the participants into four groups. Results from a MANOVA yielded a significant main effect for substitute father involvement, but not father involvement. Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) is a water mass formed in winter by convective mixing on the equatorward side of western boundary currents in the subtropical gyres. After the return of the seasonal and main pycnoclines. By characterizing STMW primarily at the density gradient minimum, previous studies were limited in their ability to describe STMW properties over large temporal and spatial scales. Rather than using a density-based characterization, the North Atlantic STMW layer was identified here by its much smaller temperature gradient relative to the more stratified seasonal and main thermoclines. In the process of development of sediment quality criteria, trace metal bioavailability is an essential consideration because different sediments can exhibit differing degrees of toxicity for the same concentration of contaminant. Various sediment phases are responsible for binding trace metals and rendering them non-bioavailable. In 1990, it was shown that acid volatile sulfide (AVS) is responsible for binding certain divalent metals on a molar basis. By measuring AVS and the simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), potential trace metal bioavailability may be determined.
