A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial Of The Unified Protocol For The Treatment Of Emotional Disorders In Children (Up-C), Sarah Michelle Kennedy
A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial Of The Unified Protocol For The Treatment Of Emotional Disorders In Children (Up-C), Sarah Michelle Kennedy
Open Access Dissertations
Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well established treatment for anxiety and depressive disorders in children (Chorpita et al., 2011), a significant proportion of children do not respond to existing CBT protocols, and many protocols do not adequately address high rates of comorbidity among emotional disorders. Transdiagnostic approaches may help to improve treatment response in children, particularly for clinical or sub-clinical comorbid conditions not adequately targeted by disorder-specific CBT, and to prevent the later development of commonly occurring comorbid conditions. The Unified Protocol for the Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children (UP-C; Ehrenreich-May et al., in press) is a transdiagnostic …
Socio-Emotional Adjustment In Couples With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Dyadic And Individual Effects Of Problem Behavior In Mothers And Fathers, Hoa Lam Schneider
Socio-Emotional Adjustment In Couples With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Dyadic And Individual Effects Of Problem Behavior In Mothers And Fathers, Hoa Lam Schneider
Open Access Dissertations
The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has seen a sharp rise in recent years, with as many as 1 in 68 children affected by ASD. While the impact of caring for a child with ASD is individualized and varied, the lifelong and pervasive nature of the disorder may put parents at risk for negative outcomes. Previous research with this population suggests that problem behavior associated with autism is one factor that may be related to adverse outcomes among parents. The present study aimed to elucidate the individual and dyadic experiences of parents of children with ASD using the Actor-Partner …
Examining The Impact Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth On Consumer Responses Toward Company: An Alignment-Social Influence Model, Zifei Chen
Open Access Dissertations
To address the growing demand to understand the impact of consumer advocacy and stakeholder behavior in public relations research and practices, this dissertation examined the impact of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on consumer responses. It fills the extant eWOM research gap by addressing consumers’ prior informational and attitudinal base before exposure to eWOM, and anticipated interaction (i.e., lurking and posting behavior) powered by the dynamic, interactive nature of social media. A consolidated Alignment-Social Influence (ASI) model was proposed drawing on interdisciplinary insights from public relations, marketing, consumer behavior, and psychology. Two central research questions were answered through an empirical test of …
Sociocultural Factors That Predict Attrition From A Family Treatment For Schizophrenia, Kayla Krystal Gurak
Sociocultural Factors That Predict Attrition From A Family Treatment For Schizophrenia, Kayla Krystal Gurak
Open Access Dissertations
Attrition (or premature treatment dropout), particularly from family treatments, continues to be a poorly understood phenomenon. High attrition rates mean that patients with schizophrenia and their caregivers are not obtaining the benefits that family treatments offer (e.g., reductions in symptom severity and caregiver burden) and are also experiencing additional negative outcomes (e.g., poorer patient social functioning, poorer caregiver mental health). Although research consistently demonstrates that certain demographic factors, such as being an ethnic minority, predict greater attrition from treatment, we know little about sociocultural factors that may explain why these relationships exist. In a sample of 115 families that were …
The Role Of Negative And Positive Emotional Reactions In Hoarding Symptomatology, Ashley Marie Shaw
The Role Of Negative And Positive Emotional Reactions In Hoarding Symptomatology, Ashley Marie Shaw
Open Access Dissertations
Hoarding disorder (HD) is marked by difficulty discarding, acquisition of items, and clutter. Cognitive-behavioral theories emphasize the role of intense negative and positive emotions in maintaining hoarding behaviors. Difficulties with emotional reactivity and regulation may play a critical role in HD’s etiology and may also represent important treatment targets. Despite the strong theoretical rationale, past research on emotional reactivity and regulation in relation to hoarding has been marked by methodological limitations, including sampling design, and only two studies have examined positive emotions in HD. We conducted a multi-method examination of emotional regulation and reactivity in persons with HD, collectors, and …
Tmi: The Data-Driven Literature Of The American Renaissance, Brad Christopher Rittenhouse
Tmi: The Data-Driven Literature Of The American Renaissance, Brad Christopher Rittenhouse
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation posits that much of the aesthetic innovation associated with the American Renaissance stemmed from a wide range of sociocultural and technological that transformed nineteenth-century America into an urban, consumerist society grappling with an ocean of print, products, and people. Reacting to these new modern landscapes, New York writers like Herman Melville and Walt Whitman produced highly anomalous texts that prioritized the aggregation, aestheticization, and transmission of unprecedented volumes of cultural data. Borrowing from and building upon the contemporary information management strategies of rationalist fields like descriptive biology, accounting, and library science, these writers in particular developed a “data-driven” …
Decoding Russian Foreign Policy, Dina Moulioukova
Decoding Russian Foreign Policy, Dina Moulioukova
Open Access Dissertations
The traditional notion of security in international relations theory assumes that nation-states have one driving goal in their relations with other states – their own survival. Therefore states should calculate their foreign policy decisions solely with that goal in mind. While physical security is important to states, sometimes, however, states structure their actions in materially costly ways. These actions satisfy the self-identity needs of the states. In case states avoided these actions their sense of self-identity would be radically disrupted, and such a disruption is just as important to the states as threats to their physical integrity. While physical security …
Ecology And Evolution Of Soft Song, A Complex Behavior, In Turdus Thrushes, Luis Esteban Vargas-Castro
Ecology And Evolution Of Soft Song, A Complex Behavior, In Turdus Thrushes, Luis Esteban Vargas-Castro
Open Access Dissertations
The development and evolution of low amplitude "soft song" was investigated in thrushes of the genus Turdus. Sharing of soft song was studied in the white-throated thrush (T. assimilis) and compared to sharing of broadcast song in the same species, in order to draw inferences about how both song modes are acquired. It was found that most of the song repertoires of each song mode are unique to particular white-throated thrushes, suggesting that this species relies more on invention than imitation during song development. The spatial pattern of sharing between local males differed between song modes. Broadcast song sharing peaks …
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Open Access Dissertations
The expanding social worlds of middle childhood prompt children to evaluate and explore their sense of selves to better understand who they are and where they fit in (Erikson, 1968; Josselson & Harway, 2012). Children born in the USA to at least one foreign-born parent, also known as second-generation immigrants, often straddle multiple cultures, making their social contexts highly diverse and their explorations of identity complex (Sebastian, 2008). This collective case study focused on the home musical lives of four second-generation children in Miami, Florida, USA to gain greater insight into music’s meaning in their lives and the role it …

The Impact Of Intrathecal Baclofen On Growth Among Children With Spasticity Ages 2-20 Years, Amy Lynn Malmsberry Kaye
Open Access Dissertations
Spasticity is present in 80% of children experiencing Cerebral Palsy (CP) and 50% of those having sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (Tilton, 2015; O'Shea, 2008). Growth impairment among children with motor disabilities secondary to a Central Nervous System (CNS) insult is common and interferes with mobility, functioning comfort, and Quality of Life (QOL) (Vles, 2011; Mallarkey, 2009; Krick, Murphy-Miller, Zeger, & Wright, 1996). Spasticity may range fro mild to severe involving any body part (Mallarkey, 2009). There are a broad range of treatment modalities for managing spasticity impacting the child, parent or caregiver, and a multidisciplinary healthcare team (Brashear …

Bicultural Beauty: How Latina And Asian American Women Interpret American Beauty Advertising, Katy Snell
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how bicultural-identified Latina and Asian American women interpret, negotiate, and utilize American beauty advertising in their identities as well as provides analysis concerning the broader marketplace ideologies embedded in the texts. This work is two-fold, utilizing critical textual analysis to examine advertisements featuring Latina and Asian women to then inform the questions for in-depth interviews between myself and 60 self-identified bicultural Asian and Latina American women. Under the paradigm of cultural studies, I utilized critical cultural theory, rhetorical agency, distinctiveness theory, and visual representation theory. In the in-depth interview section, I found that this burgeoning group of …

Application Of Finger Gymnastics For Retraining And Refining Piano Technique, P. David Encalada Leon
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to offer a conceptual basis and physical actions to retrain specific physiological settings, which are: 1) excessive and/or permanent stress of fingers at the flexor/extensor muscles, and 2) under development and thumb’s functionality and coordination, both common causes of rigidity and stagnation of fingers while playing the piano. Exercises and actions selected to fulfill this purpose belong to several authors that have designed gymnastic exercises and routines for hand and fingers, as well as those created by myself and this research’s advisor Dr. Naoko Takao. The exercises are sequenced following specific targeted outcomes, complemented …
The Ontogeny Of Duets In A Neotropical Bird, The Canebrake Wren, Karla D. Rivera Cáceres
The Ontogeny Of Duets In A Neotropical Bird, The Canebrake Wren, Karla D. Rivera Cáceres
Open Access Dissertations
Interactions in which individuals exchange vocal signals are an important aspect of communication in many species. Human conversation provides one familiar example. Other examples drawn from songbirds are countersinging between territorial males and duetting between mated males and females. The development of vocal signals such as human speech and the song of songbirds has been amply studied, but, we know significantly less about the development of the rules that mediate vocal interactions in these groups. Because of the interactive nature of duets, duetting species provide an ideal model system to study the development of vocal interaction rules. Duets involve specific …
Music Memorization For The Classical Guitarist, Federico Musgrove Stetson
Music Memorization For The Classical Guitarist, Federico Musgrove Stetson
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this essay is to research all music memorization techniques used by classical guitarists, and identify the most successful ones in order to create an efficient music memorization method for the classical guitar. Musical performance from memory is now commonplace among solo classical musicians. This concept developed from the rise of the Romantic era instrumental virtuoso, and since then, hundreds of studies and articles have been written to analyze and provide efficient memorization techniques, the oldest of which dates back to 1857. Although most of the data gathered in these studies and articles can apply to the classical …

Prophecy, Dreams, And Fantasy: Writing Englishwomen's Practical Knowledge, 1640-1680, Rebecca C.W. Hu
Open Access Dissertations
This project sheds light on how presumably irrational, intuitive, and affective modes of knowing evident in seventeenth-century Englishwomen’s writings are, in their own ways, practical, rational, and consequential. Thanks to important scholarship such as Linda Woodbridge’s The Scythe of Saturn: Shakespeare and Magical Thinking and Diane Purkiss’s The Witch in History: Early Modern and Twentieth-Century Representations, the concept of intuitive and affective knowledge as practical has received increasing academic attention. At least some seventeenth- century women wrote to legitimize the usefulness of what they knew. My project examines Anna Trapnel’s ecstatic prophecies, Katherine Austen’s numerology of dreams, and Margaret Cavendish’s …
The Solo Vocal Songs Of Richard Wagner: A Pedagogical Guide For Use In The Voice Studio, Sarah Theresa Shipkowski Wee
The Solo Vocal Songs Of Richard Wagner: A Pedagogical Guide For Use In The Voice Studio, Sarah Theresa Shipkowski Wee
Open Access Dissertations
The solo vocal songs of Richard Wagner are an under-performed part of the standard classical vocal repertoire. In this paper, fifteen of Richard Wagner’s solo vocal songs have been researched and analyzed. The orchestrated solo works, fragments, songs with chorus, arias or operatic compositions of Richard Wagner were not considered in this paper. The background of each song is addressed including what was going on in Wagner’s life at the time they were written, and any note-worthy information about the poet of the text, or the text itself. A poetic translation of each text has been included. The songs are …
Job Satisfaction Of Orchestral Musicians: The Effects Of Non-Performance Organizational Roles, Abigail Wilcox Young
Job Satisfaction Of Orchestral Musicians: The Effects Of Non-Performance Organizational Roles, Abigail Wilcox Young
Open Access Dissertations
This study measures the job satisfaction of professional orchestral musicians in the United States. The research focuses on those who hold additional non-performance roles within their organizations, whether paid or unpaid, and how these additional roles relate to job satisfaction. The paper also assesses the level of interest orchestral musicians have in taking on these added roles within their organizations. An anonymous, online survey was sent to personnel managers of U.S. orchestras and 560 individual responses were recorded. In addition to other trends within the data, string musicians were the only instrument group with below-average job and role satisfaction. Musicians …

Rehabilitation Strategies For Brass Musicians With Focal Task-Specific Embouchure Dystonia, Eric J. Bowman
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this essay is to provide rehabilitation strategies for brass musicians with focal task-specific embouchure dystonia. These strategies are based on common techniques used by those who have experienced success retraining their embouchure. There will also be a discussion of pertinent scientific research regarding the focus of attention during the learning process. The goal of rehabilitation is to provide a means of reducing unnecessary tension, restore a healthy airstream, and allow unconscious movements in the embouchure to accommodate the airstream. This will allow brass musicians to focus on sound rather than body mechanics. This essay was inspired by …
Attachment Security Differs By Later Autism Spectrum Disorder Outcome: A Prospective Study, Katherine Blair Martin
Attachment Security Differs By Later Autism Spectrum Disorder Outcome: A Prospective Study, Katherine Blair Martin
Open Access Dissertations
Attachment in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has typically been assessed retrospectively after diagnosis (> 30 months), primarily using non-standardized protocols, making it difficult to interpret and compare across studies in normative and atypical samples. We assessed attachment security prospectively at 15 months in high-risk infants with later (3 year) ASD (High-Risk/ASD, n=16), and high- (High-Risk/No-ASD, n=40) and low-risk (Low-Risk/No-ASD, n=39) infants without later ASD- using the standard Strange Situation Procedure. High-Risk/ASD infants were disproportionately more likely to be classified as insecure (vs. secure, 2-way) and insecure-resistant (vs. secure vs. avoidant, 3-way) than High-Risk/No-ASD and Low-Risk/No-ASD (2-way, 56.3%, 15.0%, …
The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović
The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of and perceptions about professional female percussionists. The history of female participation in music in Western society reveals patterns of bias and segregation, in addition to progress made by those who fought for equality. Although a significant body of research has focused on gender instrument bias, the topic of female percussionists has been largely untended. Previous literature reveals several themes underlying this topic, including sex stereotyping of roles in music, instrument choice, childhood gender roles and their social context, role modeling in higher educational institutions, work-life balance, and reported issues …
Suggestions For Incorporating Entrepreneurship Education In The Classical Brass Performance Studio, Andrew Friedrichs
Suggestions For Incorporating Entrepreneurship Education In The Classical Brass Performance Studio, Andrew Friedrichs
Open Access Dissertations
As music institutions strive to embody the nature of entrepreneurship in greater capacities, both a lack of understanding and a lack of pedagogical knowledge serve as detriments to this end. The purpose of this study is to equip classical brass performance professors, whose goal it is to incorporate entrepreneurship in their studios, with practical suggestions on how to do so. Information from a survey of brass players was combined with literature regarding entrepreneurship education teaching practices as well as practices from content areas generated from the survey in order to devise a set of suggestions for brass professors. The survey …
Sexual Orientation Disclosure And Concealment: A Model-Driven Meta-Analysis, Daniel J. Sheridan
Sexual Orientation Disclosure And Concealment: A Model-Driven Meta-Analysis, Daniel J. Sheridan
Open Access Dissertations
Empirical literature examining lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) sexual orientation disclosure and concealment is prolific. Theoretical literature on disclosure and concealment of non-visible stigmatized identities, such as a sexual minority identity, have argued that disclosure is associated with improved social and health outcomes whereas concealment is associated with negative social and health outcomes. Empirical findings examining the relationships between LGB disclosure and concealment and outcome variables, however, have conflicted. This study clarified conflicting empirical findings utilizing model-based meta-analysis. Utilizing a total of 583 correlations from a database of 157 studies, random-effects modeling was used to determine the weighted mean relationship …
Body Weight, Nutrition, And The Classical Singer: A Review Of The Existing Literature, Rebekah Kaye Smeltzer
Body Weight, Nutrition, And The Classical Singer: A Review Of The Existing Literature, Rebekah Kaye Smeltzer
Open Access Dissertations
The discussion of body weight and the classical singer is not new, but recent events, such as HD broadcasts of opera productions, along with rising obesity rates across the general populace, have led to increased debate surrounding the stereotype of the overweight opera singer. As overweight singers face increased pressure to lose weight, a variety of suggestions have traveled through the vocal community, but little evidence-based research or health care advice has been readily available. Research has been conducted which seeks to answer how obesity affects vocal function, as well as how bariatric surgery may affect the voice; however, this …

Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and longitudinally examine the cumulative effects of individual student characteristics, pre‑college backgrounds and college environmental factors and how they interact to influence whether college athletes feel prepared for the future upon graduation from college. Based on an extensive review of the existing literature, a conceptual model was developed and tested using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen (NLSF), which was specifically designed to test theoretical explanations of minority students. This study found that athletes at academically selective colleges and universities differ from their non‑athlete peers but not in the manner …
The Embodied Experience Of Pain: A Phenomenological Study Of Pain In Adults Diagnosed With And Treated For Cancer, Liza Hayes Mathias
The Embodied Experience Of Pain: A Phenomenological Study Of Pain In Adults Diagnosed With And Treated For Cancer, Liza Hayes Mathias
Open Access Dissertations
The main goal of this dissertation project was to understand and explain the meaning of pain for adults who are diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Cancer diagnoses generate different responses and multiple life disturbances in most participants. In this context, the search for meaning of these experiences is fundamental, particularly understanding both physical and emotional pain. In order to comprehend how people diagnosed with and treated for cancer experience their pain, I used a phenomenological approach to interview 15 adults (13 women and 2 men) with a variety of cancer diagnoses. Although I approached these interviews as conversations, I …
Three Essays In Financial Economics, Da Ke
Three Essays In Financial Economics, Da Ke
Open Access Dissertations
My dissertation examines economic determinants of household financial decisions and investor behaviors. It contains three essays. The first essay investigates whether gender norms shape intra-household financial decision making. Analyzing microdata covering more than 30 million U.S. households, I document that families with a financially sophisticated husband are more likely to participate in the stock market than those with a wife of equal financial sophistication. Consistent with the gender norm hypothesis, the baseline effect is attenuated among individuals brought up by working mothers, but becomes stronger among descendants of pre-industrial societies in which women specialized in activities within the home and …
Contextual Effects On Perceived And Actual Product Efficacy, Noah Thomas Van Bergen
Contextual Effects On Perceived And Actual Product Efficacy, Noah Thomas Van Bergen
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines how the context in which consumers encounter products shapes perceptions of product efficacy and product efficacy experiences. Contextual influences are recognized as relating to both the product and the consumer. While extant research on product efficacy perceptions has examined a range of factors inherent to products that influence perceived efficacy, less research has examined how the context in which a product appears influences product efficacy judgments, and even scarcer is research on the influence of a consumer’s decision context. The present research advances knowledge in both arenas by studying two practically important and theoretically-driven contextual influences on …
Cartographies Of Social Death: Abjection And The American Dispossessed, Allison N. Harris
Cartographies Of Social Death: Abjection And The American Dispossessed, Allison N. Harris
Open Access Dissertations
Cartographies of Social Death: Abjection and the American Dispossessed argues that property violence acts as a nexus for social death and abjection in the United States. The project considers how nineteenth- and early-twentieth century dispossessory U.S. legislation haunts late-twentieth- and twenty-first-century novels. Attending to the particularity of space and borders, Cartographies maps the legal, socio-cultural, and psycho-linguistic constructions of personhood in novels framed by these legislations. I propose an intersectional collective “American dispossessed” concatenated by their experience of property vulnerability as subjects formed in relation to death. I develop a theory of intersubjective abjection to posit an optimistic but not …
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Ocular Photosensitivity Test: A Novel Quantification Of Symptoms And Light Sensitivity Threshold, Jennifer Dayana Verriotto
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Ocular Photosensitivity Test: A Novel Quantification Of Symptoms And Light Sensitivity Threshold, Jennifer Dayana Verriotto

Consensus And Clustering Of Networked Agent Opinions: A Belief Theoretic View, Ranga Dabarera
Open Access Dissertations
Opinion dynamics is the study of the exchange of opinions among agents embedded and communicating over a network. In particular, issues related to the formation of consensus of opinions, opinion clustering, and opinion influencing have drawn the attention of researchers in areas as diverse as sociophysics, economics, finance, computer science, and engineering, due to their potential application in social networks, marketing, cooperative control of autonomous agents, etc. In this dissertation, we utilize the Dempster-Shafer belief theoretic framework to capture agent opinions. The DS theoretic formulation allows us to account for the types of uncertainties that are inherent in social opinions …
