Generalized Plot Matrices, Automatic Cognostics, And Efficient Data Exploration, Barret Schloerke
Generalized Plot Matrices, Automatic Cognostics, And Efficient Data Exploration, Barret Schloerke
Open Access Dissertations
Statistical visualization of large-scale data has become an increasingly essential task in the era of big data. In particular, exploratory data analysis and visualization is the first step towards any in-depth statistical modeling and analysis. Being able to rapidly specify and generate visualizations regardless of data-scale is crucial. Trellis-cope handles data visualization at scale by attaching cognostics (univariate metrics) to each panel aiding in the organization of panels of interest. While Trelliscope provides a general framework for visualizing data at scale, there are several aspects that can be improved to help users generate displays more rapidly (such as cognostics, axis …

A Closer Look: How High School Principals' Perceptions About Teacher Mindset Impact Instructional Coaching, Heather T. Short
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how high school principals’ perceptions about the teacher mindset affects how principals provide teachers with coaching and feedback. The research was conducted using the theoretical framework of phenomenology. Data was derived from interviews with two high school principals who have extensive experience in teacher evaluations and coaching. These interviews were recorded, transcribed, and confirmed prior to the coding process and data analysis. The study found a link between principals’ perceptions of teacher mindset and the coaching that ensued. This study pointed to that when principals’ perception increases, coaching effectiveness can increase. …
Using Gifted Student Perceptions Of Motivational Techniques To Inform Teacher Reflection, Kristen K. Seward
Using Gifted Student Perceptions Of Motivational Techniques To Inform Teacher Reflection, Kristen K. Seward
Open Access Dissertations
This mixed methods research investigated the relationship between student and teacher perceptions of five motivational components of instruction—appeal, challenge, choice, meaningfulness, and academic self-efficacy—and how teachers’ knowledge of their students’ perceptions informed their reflection on the quality of instruction. The Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality (SPOCQ; Gentry & Owen, 2004) and Teacher Perceptions of Classroom Quality (T-POCQ; Seward, 2016) survey results of students with gifts and talents (n = 306 for a total of 518 administrations of the SPOCQ) and teachers (n = 23 for a total of 39 administrations of the T-POCQ) who participated in a summer academic enrichment …
The Political Economy Of Tobacco In The Seventeenth Century English Atlantic, Ruth Savidge Turpin
The Political Economy Of Tobacco In The Seventeenth Century English Atlantic, Ruth Savidge Turpin
Open Access Dissertations
This thesis examines the political economy of tobacco in England and the Chesapeake in the seventeenth century, including production and labor, distribution and shipping, markets, taxes, and consumers. Because of James I’s struggles with Parliament, tobacco achieved a special tax status and thus a special relationship to the English Crown. That relationship persisted through the reign of Charles I, across the Interregnum, and into the Restoration. Tobacco was grown as a cash crop in both England and the Chesapeake. In England, production was exclusively by independent landowners hungry for a cash crop. English tobacco growing was outlawed in 1619, but …
Roles Of Time Perception And Expected Action Effects In Selecting Delayed Outcomes From Description And Experience, Aiping Xiong
Roles Of Time Perception And Expected Action Effects In Selecting Delayed Outcomes From Description And Experience, Aiping Xiong
Open Access Dissertations
In everyday life, many action outcomes and the information associated with them (e.g., the receiving time or probability) can be learned through description or experience. Experimental studies of choice behavior document distinct, and sometimes contradictory, deviations from maximization. For example, when people make decisions from described probabilities, they tend to overweight rare events. In contrast, when people make decisions from experienced outcomes, they tend to exhibit the opposite bias. People’s experience is always sequential and extended in time, whereas one-shot descriptions are not. Typically, the chance of something happening relies on individuals’ sampling from the past experience, indicating a probabilistic …
Using Multiple Ways To Investigate Cognitive Load Theory In The Context Of Physics Instruction, Tianlong Zu
Using Multiple Ways To Investigate Cognitive Load Theory In The Context Of Physics Instruction, Tianlong Zu
Open Access Dissertations
Cognitive load theory (CLT) (Sweller 1988, 1998, 2010) provides us a guiding framework for designing instructional materials. CLT differentiates three subtypes of cognitive load: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. The three cognitive loads are theorized based on the number of simultaneously processed elements in working memory. Intrinsic cognitive load depends upon the number of interacting elements in the instructional material that are related to the learning objective. Extraneous cognitive load is the mental resources allocated to processing unnecessary information which does not contribute to learning as caused by non-optimal instructional procedure. It is determined by the number of interacting …
Formative Research On An Instructional Design Theory For Fostering Self-Efficacy Through Gamification, Stacey Zurek
Formative Research On An Instructional Design Theory For Fostering Self-Efficacy Through Gamification, Stacey Zurek
Open Access Dissertations
The merits of gamification as a learner-centered pedagogy that positively influences learner engagement and motivation are widely established in the literature; yet, few studies have ventured beyond motivation to consider the impact gamification has on self-efficacy. Moreover, guidance for the effective design and development of gamified instruction is lacking. This study describes formative research conducted on the Gamification for Enhancing Learner Self-Efficacy (GELSE) instructional design theory, which was developed to guide the design of gamification aimed at fostering self-efficacy. The goal of formative research is to identify improvements for an instructional design theory based on a designed instance of the …
Spasticity And Pain After Spinal Cord Injury: Relationships To Physiological, Functional, And Quality Of Life Measures, Jacqueline Anne Tibbett
Spasticity And Pain After Spinal Cord Injury: Relationships To Physiological, Functional, And Quality Of Life Measures, Jacqueline Anne Tibbett
Open Access Dissertations
Spasticity and chronic pain are both prevalent consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI), are commonly considered problematic, and are associated with reduced quality of life after SCI. This study investigated factors that contribute to the perceived impact of spasticity on daily life and how pain and spasticity are related. Analysis to characterize the strength of relationships between the impact of spasticity on life and physiological, environmental, and psychosocial factors can aid in identifying factors most strongly related to negative or positive impacts of spasticity. These factors may become candidates for experimental interventions aimed at reducing the problematic impact of spasticity …
Testing A Eudaimonic Theory Of Goal Hierarchy, Laura Meredith Cohen
Testing A Eudaimonic Theory Of Goal Hierarchy, Laura Meredith Cohen
Open Access Dissertations
This study utilized Eudaimonic Theory (ET), an Aristotelian perspective on humanflourishing (eudaimonia), to explore new eudaimonic goal hierarchy hypotheses. The ET model distinguishes between two types of well-being: Eudaimonic Well-Being (EWB) and Hedonic Well-Being (HWB), and two dimensions of goal pursuit: the Communal Dimension and the Agency Dimension. HWB refers to experiencing high positive affect, low negative affect and high life satisfaction. EWB is assessed through factors such as purpose, personal growth and positive relationships giving. The Communal Dimension refers to a distinction between individual goals, which can only be pursued by one person and shared goals, which are completely …

Peer Victimization And Adolescents' Academic Functioning, Caroline Jane Ehrlich
Peer Victimization And Adolescents' Academic Functioning, Caroline Jane Ehrlich
Open Access Dissertations
Background. Peer victimization (PV) has been linked to poor psychological adjustment in adolescence. Research in younger populations has linked PV to poor academic functioning, but few studies have examined this relationship during the high school years. Low academic functioning (e.g., lower GPA, more school absences, and more disciplinary action brought against the student) has been linked to higher school dropout rates and poorer mental health in adulthood. The current study examined the trajectories of academic achievement across one year of high school for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, and the extent to which PV was associated with those trajectories. Gender …
Mindful Attention Training For Compulsive Urges: An Experimental Investigation, Demet Çek
Mindful Attention Training For Compulsive Urges: An Experimental Investigation, Demet Çek
Open Access Dissertations
Introduction. Mindful attention (MA) training is a brief computerized intervention that instructs participants to nonjudgmentally observe thoughts and sensations in lieu of reflexively reacting to them. Experimental studies have demonstrated that MA training decreases appetitive urges with regards to unhealthy eating and risky sexual behaviors. It remains unclear whether MA would have a similar effect on aversive urges, such as compulsive urges arising from intrusive thoughts. The current study investigated the effects of MA training on compulsive urges associated with two obsessive-compulsive symptom (OCS) dimensions, and examined the moderating roles of OCS severity and cognitive flexibility on urge-related clinical indicators. …

Open Access Dissertations
Environmental mercury poses a potentially serious health threat to human populations, particularly through bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes which can concentrate ambient mercury to dangerous levels in fish, a food source for a significant percentage of the earth’s population. Emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources, mass industrialization over the past few decades has significantly increased the amount of mercury in the environment, increasing health risks for humans and other organisms. A pollutant of both local and global concern, regulating environmental mercury risk has proven exceedingly difficult due to scientific uncertainty and numerous cultural, psychological, economic, and political factors. This dissertation …
A Comparison Of Geomin Versus Target Rotation Criteria In Exploratory Factor Analysis With Correlated Factors And Large And Complex Pattern Matrices, Seniz Celimli Aksoy
A Comparison Of Geomin Versus Target Rotation Criteria In Exploratory Factor Analysis With Correlated Factors And Large And Complex Pattern Matrices, Seniz Celimli Aksoy
Open Access Dissertations
The current study compared the effect of geomin versus target rotation criteria on the quality of exploratory factor analysis solutions with correlated factors and a large and complex underlying structure and incomplete substantive measurement theory. Comparing the performance of these two rotation criteria was important because geomin has been viewed as an easy to use mechanical rotation criterion that provides little to no opportunity to incorporate a priori measurement theory into the complexity function while target has been viewed as a less easy to use non-mechanical rotation criterion that requires the user to incorporate at least some a priori substantive …
Stress Appraisal, Coping Behaviors, And Level Of Distress In An Ethnically Diverse Sample Of Mothers With A Child In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Mary E. Ernst
Open Access Dissertations
Having a child in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) places parents at risk for Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) symptoms. ASD symptoms, or primary negative responses to a traumatic event, may increase parents’ risk for developing long-term Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) one or more months later. The purpose of this study is to examine the stress appraisal, coping behaviors, and level of distress due to ASD in an ethnically diverse sample of mothers with a child in the PICU, while controlling for socioeconomic factors. A quantitative cross-sectional design, which surveyed mothers with a child age one day to 17 years …
Toward An Understanding Of The Experiences Of Commercially Sexually Exploited Children, Lauren Gutman Suarez
Toward An Understanding Of The Experiences Of Commercially Sexually Exploited Children, Lauren Gutman Suarez
Open Access Dissertations
There is a paucity of systematic research examining the experiences of commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC). Notably absent from the discourse are the voices of survivors themselves, impeding the provision of effective and culturally appropriate services to survivors and the prevention of youth victimization (Godziak, 2008). This dissertation aims to address a dearth in the literature surrounding CSEC using Photovoice, an innovative and arts-based methodology grounded in the principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR) (Wang, 1999). A group of 15 female survivors participated in the study, contributing to the field’s understanding of childhood commercial sexual exploitation. Survivors ranged in age …

The inclusion of ongoing consultation following EBP training in implementation efforts has been shown to enhance the uptake of EBPs into systems of care. Yet, little is known about the types of questions and concerns raised by providers during consultation and methods used by consultants to address those concerns. In addition, it is often difficult to get providers to engage in consultation. The present study examined content and consultative methods during consultation following training in TF-CBT, as part of a community-based learning collaborative (CBLC) to implement TF-CBT for youth served in the child welfare system. Minute-to-minute live coding of consultation …
Risk And The Response To Sea Level Rise In South Florida, Galen Treuer
Risk And The Response To Sea Level Rise In South Florida, Galen Treuer
Open Access Dissertations
South Florida’s low elevation, intensive urban development, and delicate ecosystems make it vulnerable to sea level rise. A gap exists between the current policies local governments in South Florida pursue and adaptation that could significantly reduce their exposure to climate change risks. One reason for this gap is that climate adaptation requires a transition away from the status quo, and barriers impede change. This dissertation presents three studies that aim to help communities in the region embrace and address their climate change risks. Chapter 2 reports the findings of an immersive simulation experiment that accelerates South Florida homeowners through thirty-five …

Study 1 was employed with “Big Data” approaches. Using Ordinary Least Square estimation method with lagged variables, it modeled nine-year longitudinal social media and financial panel data from the largest 100 nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in the United States. Results offered a nine-year overview of NPOs presence and stakeholder engagement with them on Facebook. Findings from hypotheses tested suggested that not all stakeholder engagements were significant predicators for NPO donations. Only liking and commenting engagement behaviors were positively associated …
Disentangling The Effects Of Abusive Supervision On Employee Creativity: The Role Of Affect, Mindfulness, And Team Conflict, Yuanmei Qu
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores how to attenuate the negative influence of team abusive supervision on followers’ creativity. First, it is not feasible to interfere with these negative impacts without the knowledge of the underlying processes. Essay 1 unravels how team abusive supervision gradually leads to followers’ creativity from a team process perspective by identifying team state mindfulness, team state negative affect, team task conflict, and team relationship conflict as critical mechanisms. Using a time-lagged multilevel field study of 92 teams, I found that abusive supervision aggravated relationship conflict via diminishing mindfulness levels in employees, and that abusive supervision exacerbated task conflict …
Depression And Inflammatory Changes After Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management As Predictors Of Survival And Disease Recurrence In Women With Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer, Laura C. Bouchard
Open Access Dissertations
Both depression and inflammation are independently associated with breast cancer health outcomes, and multiple studies have shown that depression and inflammatory markers may be linked among women with breast cancer. Studies of cognitive-behavioral based psychosocial interventions have found beneficial intervention effects on time to survival and recurrence in breast cancer patients. However, the mechanisms through which interventions affect clinical health outcomes are less understood. It has been suggested that psychosocial interventions may affect long-term breast cancer clinical disease endpoints via effects on immune and inflammatory processes, but more research is necessary to explore these relationships. The current study examined the …
Examining An Executive Functioning And Bilingual Advantage Among Latino Dll Children In Head Start: A Strength-Based Approach, Lisa J. White
Examining An Executive Functioning And Bilingual Advantage Among Latino Dll Children In Head Start: A Strength-Based Approach, Lisa J. White
Open Access Dissertations
Young Spanish-speaking Latinos in the U.S., most of whom are from low-income backgrounds, perform below their English-speaking peers at kindergarten entry. This achievement gap is concerning considering the rising number of Latino children in the U.S. living in poverty. Despite this risk, a large body of research highlights the positive effects of learning two languages. Latino DLLs attending Head Start, compared to their monolingual peers, were recently found to have higher executive functioning (EF), a set of domain-general cognitive skills that robustly predict academic achievement. This emerging evidence is encouraging, however, there is still a lack of research on how …

Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Effects On Social Well-Being, Negative Affect, And Inflammation After Surgery For Breast Cancer, Devika R. Jutagir
Open Access Dissertations
Many women experience distress during diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and research suggests that satisfaction with access to social resources both decreases psychological distress and improves duration of survival after breast cancer diagnosis. However, biobehavioral mechanisms linking interpersonal processes to mental and physical health are poorly understood. Studies are also needed to elucidate whether psychosocial interventions that improve social well-being and psychological health affect biological outcomes known to promote cancer disease progression (e.g., inflammation). This study examined a subsample of 78 women enrolled in a 10-week randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) at the University of …
