Punishment Of Public Corruption In China And The United States, Linjing Wang May 2018

Punishment Of Public Corruption In China And The United States, Linjing Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Corruption is pervasive in many countries. However, the most effective punishment to deter corruption remains unknown. Some have suggested that the death penalty is required to reduce corruption and ensure clean government. However, research shows that the likelihood of punishment is the strongest factor, not the severity of the punishment. It requires large social costs, such as expenditure on policemen, court personnel, and specialized monitoring equipment, to improve the probability of punishment. Can elevation of the severity of punishment be a good substitute? The empirical results from this dissertation suggest that the probability of punishing corruption, i.e., how likely a …

Object-Oriented User Interface Customization Framework: Customizing Complex User Interfaces To Improve Usability And User Performance., Le Zhang May 2018

Object-Oriented User Interface Customization Framework: Customizing Complex User Interfaces To Improve Usability And User Performance., Le Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

The objective of this research is to use four individual studies to validate the Object-Oriented User Interface Customization (OOUIC) framework for solving three challenges of implementing User Interface (UI) customization in Complex Information System (CIS) and improving usability and user performance of complex UI. The first challenge is that adaptive UI, which tailors a UI to be relevant to a user role, has difficulties in identifying numerous users’ complex requirements and simplifying UIs for them. The second challenge is that adaptive UI cannot satisfy every individual’s unique needs. The third challenge is that adaptable UI, which allows a user to …

Behavioral Pharmacology Of Alcohol And Legal Psychostimulants, Meridith Tracy Doyle May 2018

Behavioral Pharmacology Of Alcohol And Legal Psychostimulants, Meridith Tracy Doyle

Open Access Dissertations

Substance abuse, including alcohol and psychostimulant abuse, is a widespread and dangerous public health issue. In the United States, 8-10% of people 12 years of age or older (accounting for 20-22 million persons) are addicted to alcohol or other drugs, and the results of substance abuse are costly at both the individual and society level. Despite the large financial burden of substance abuse to society, efficacious psychosocial and pharmacologic treatment options are lacking. For example, in the pharmacologic treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUD), only three drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and each have their …

Teacher Identity And The Role Of Relational Coaching, Melinda R. Ehmer May 2018

Teacher Identity And The Role Of Relational Coaching, Melinda R. Ehmer

The purpose of this study was to identify specific strategies that principals use when coaching teachers who struggle to develop positive relationships with students. Using a qualitative case study design, six principals were identified through the use of a demographic survey. The principals were interviewed about their experiences. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, and coded for data analysis. The principals’ narratives, emerging themes and sub themes provide insight into their experiences with both relational and non-relational teachers. The emerging themes are: (a) relationship building for teachers and students; (b) coaching strategies; (c) roadblocks and deficiencies; and (d) identity and belief …

Eudaimonia And The Best Life: Epicurus' Objective Goods Perfectionism, Alex R. Gillham May 2018

Eudaimonia And The Best Life: Epicurus' Objective Goods Perfectionism, Alex R. Gillham

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that there is a standard reading of Epicurus’ ethics (SRE). The thesis of SRE is that Epicurus is both a hedonist and monist about the good, which entails that if something is good, then it (a) is pleasure, (b) contributes to pleasure, or (c) constitutes pleasure. If something is good in the sense of (a), it is intrinsically good. If something is good in the sense of (b), it is instrumentally good, i.e., it is good insofar as it is a tool for securing pleasure. If something is good in the sense of (c), it …

Conceptualizing Individual Disaster Resilience: Benchmarking Tools For Individual And Social Coping Capacity For A Disaster Resilient Society, Lindsey J. Ditirro May 2018

Conceptualizing Individual Disaster Resilience: Benchmarking Tools For Individual And Social Coping Capacity For A Disaster Resilient Society, Lindsey J. Ditirro

Open Access Dissertations

Individual disaster resilience is a new and understudied concept. It is defined as the degree to which an individual has the capacity to obtain, process, and understand disaster-related information and identify and mobilize relevant resources to make appropriate decisions and actions in dealing with disaster-related risk situations. This concept is composed of four factors: knowledge coping, information coping, communal coping and affective coping. This dissertation operationalizes this new concept and its four dimensions and develops a measurement system to test this multivariate concept known as the Individual Disaster Resilience Assessment or InDRA. This was accomplished by conducting two studies. Forty-six …

Predicting Graduation And College Gpa: A Multilevel Analysis Investigating The Contextual Effect Of College Major, John A. Gipson May 2018

Predicting Graduation And College Gpa: A Multilevel Analysis Investigating The Contextual Effect Of College Major, John A. Gipson

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the overwhelming evidence that higher education data are nested at various levels, single-level techniques such as regression and analysis of variance are commonly used to investigate student outcomes. This is problematic as a mismatch in methodology and research questions can lead to biased parameter estimates. The purpose of this study was to predict cumulative grade point average (GPA) and the likelihood of four-year and six-year graduation while simultaneously accounting for select pre-college characteristics, during-college experiences, and the interrelationship between student-level and major-level predictors. To achieve the desired outcomes, the study applied multilevel modeling techniques to secondary data for new …

Effects Of Within-Day Dietary Protein Distribution On Changes In Plasma Amino Acid Concentrations And Body Composition, Joshua L. Hudson May 2018

Effects Of Within-Day Dietary Protein Distribution On Changes In Plasma Amino Acid Concentrations And Body Composition, Joshua L. Hudson

Open Access Dissertations

The increasing prevalence of adults with overweight and obesity in the United States emphasizes the need for research on novel behavioral and lifestyle interventions such as dietary manipulation to modulate the epidemic. While consuming an energy-restricted diet is a proven method of reducing adiposity, adhering to and adopting a diet that is not self-chosen is difficult. Not unimportantly, reducing energy intake also typically results in a reduction in skeletal muscle mass. Skeletal muscle is important for facilitating functional movements, metabolizing glucose, and contributing to resting energy expenditure. Multitudinous research has focused on the macronutrient composition of an energy-restricted diet both …

Three Essays On Strategic Human Capital, Managers And Competitive Advantage, Jongsoo Kim May 2018

Three Essays On Strategic Human Capital, Managers And Competitive Advantage, Jongsoo Kim

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, I investigate the interplay between strategic human capital and the role of managers in an organization. In Essay 1, using a natural experiment setting with a dataset on change of interdependence that an organization requires, and unexpected employee exit in a professional sports league for the period 1992 to 2010, I examine the consequence of losing strategically important human resources (HR) and shows that how specific organizational recovering techniques for dealing with HR can help the firm’s strategic renewal process. The data present that the consequential impact of losing employees is depending upon the type of interdependence …

Stereotype Threat, Perfectionism, And Women's Career Outcomes, Chaihua Lin May 2018

Stereotype Threat, Perfectionism, And Women's Career Outcomes, Chaihua Lin

Open Access Dissertations

The underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) calls for efforts to understand factors that contribute to women’s career development in STEM fields. Using social cognitive career theory (SCCT), this study examines how the interplay of individual and contextual factors (i.e., perfectionism and stereotype threat) contributes to the academic and career outcomes of women STEM students (i.e., self-efficacy, outcome expectation, interest, goals, and procrastination). Hypotheses regarding the relationships among these variables, as well as the moderating role of perfectionism on the mediated effect of stereotype threat on interest through self-efficacy were assessed. Data was collected from 323 …

British Essentialism In Eighteenth-Century British Travel Literature Of The West Indies And North America, Stephanie Matos-Ayala May 2018

British Essentialism In Eighteenth-Century British Travel Literature Of The West Indies And North America, Stephanie Matos-Ayala

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores issues of representation and cultural negotiation by examining how the white colonial other was depicted in eighteenth-century travel literature, specifically Janet Schaw’s Journal of a Lady of Quality written during the years 1774 to 1776. Travel narratives and histories speak to many different topics, yet they reveal the most about eighteenth-century British ways of thinking about race and national identity, more so than about the various peoples and cultures they seek to describe. I argue that this literature reveals a hierarchy based on the absorption and consumption of British practices and goods by the colonial subject. Neither …

When Perceptions Aren't Shared And Relationships Aren't Parallel: The Curious Case Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb), Matthew B. Perrigino May 2018

When Perceptions Aren't Shared And Relationships Aren't Parallel: The Curious Case Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb), Matthew B. Perrigino

Open Access Dissertations

Perspectives which extend study of work-nonwork interface from the individual level of analysis to the workgroup level are dominated by homologous assumptions. These homologous assumptions are characterized by (a) shared perceptions within workgroups and (b) parallel relationships similar in direction and magnitude across levels. I return to the basics of multilevel theory to consider these assumptions more closely, specifically in the context of family supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB). Across three chapters, I present the FSSB Separation Framework. Chapter 1 develops theory to explain not only why within-group variation (i.e., a separation in or relative lack of shared perceptions) regarding FSSB …

Calderón's Musical Message: The Importance Of The Auditory Over The Visual, Laura Ramiro Moreno May 2018

Calderón's Musical Message: The Importance Of The Auditory Over The Visual, Laura Ramiro Moreno

Open Access Dissertations

Calderón de la Barca, a highly philosophical and religious playwright, focused the final part of his career on experimenting with musical court theater. My dissertation explains the motivation behind Calderón’s implementation of music in his theatrical productions and the situation that led him to create the new dramatic genre of zarzuela. This project analyzes the evolution of early modern musical theater in Spain by observing musical elements that are reflected in the text and related to characters and themes in the plays. A reflection on musical conventions in European theater, through the use of cognitive theories, studies on music and …

High prevalence of food insecurity and poor diet quality characterize the US low-income population qualifyingfor the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) when compared with higher income populations. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federal nutrition education program available at no cost to the income-eligible population with the goal to improve diet qualitybypromoting adherence to the DietaryGuidelines for Americans (DGA) through nutrition education while also supporting the goal of SNAP to improve food security. Limited evidence suggests that SNAP-Ed improves diet-related outcomes such as food security, intake of fruits and vegetables, and other targeted positive health behaviors over short-term …

Revisiting Rustow: An Empirical Assessment Of The Relationship Between National Identity And Attitudes Towards Democracy In Post-Soviet Russia, John P. Schultz May 2018

Revisiting Rustow: An Empirical Assessment Of The Relationship Between National Identity And Attitudes Towards Democracy In Post-Soviet Russia, John P. Schultz

Open Access Dissertations

Does national identity influence a country’s prospects for democratization? Brudny and Finkel (2011) contend that national identity explains variation in the political developments among former Soviet states. In considering this argument, this effort examines the empirical evidence to determine 1) whether a measurable model of national identity has developed within Russia, 2) how this national identity has developed over time, and 3) whether a relationship exists between this intersubjectively held conception of national identity and attitudes towards democracy. Findings suggest the development and ongoing contestation of two competing conceptions of national identity that covary with changing attitudes towards democracy over …

Evaluation Of A Redesigned Chemistry Course Sequence For Undergraduate Life Science Majors, Carly Lynn Schnoebelen May 2018

In response to both nationwide calls for reform and a perception that the existing chemistry curriculum was not meeting the needs of life science students, faculty in the department of chemistry at Purdue created a redesigned chemistry course sequence specifically aimed at preparing biology majors. The new sequence, called the 1-2-1 curriculum, spans four semesters of instruction, including one semester of general chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and one semester of biochemistry. The 1-2-1 curriculum was implemented in the 2013-2014 academic year, and students appeared to be progressing through successfully. However, there was a need for a more systematic …

Understanding And Improving The Non-Cognitive Factors That Affect First-Year Engineering Performance, Ryan Senkpeil May 2018

Understanding And Improving The Non-Cognitive Factors That Affect First-Year Engineering Performance, Ryan Senkpeil

Open Access Dissertations

To maintain America’s status as a global technological leader, there has been a longstanding effort to increase the quality and quantity of engineers in the workforce. Previous research and government reports have called on the education system at all levels to increase enrollment and persistence in college engineering programs. Additionally, engineering employers continue to be dissatisfied with the skills obtained by those students who do persist to graduation, in part because those students that may become the best engineers are leaving engineering. In order to effectively recruit and retain the best engineering students, the factors that affect engineering student success …

“Though Troubled Be My Brain:” Madness In Early Modern England, 1603-1714, Alison R. Shimko May 2018

“Though Troubled Be My Brain:” Madness In Early Modern England, 1603-1714, Alison R. Shimko

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of madness in Stuart-era England. Madness was pervasive in early modern England. it was in the streets, performed on stage, discussed in political pamphlets and legal treatises, and physically housed in Bethlehem Hospital. Madness, therefore, serves as a significant lens because in differentiating between madness and sanity, contemporaries regularly drew clear boundaries between acceptable, or “normal” behavior, and unacceptable, or “abnormal” behavior, that was particular to seventeenth-century English culture and society. Specifically, I argue that madness serves as a channel to examine the diagnoses and treatment of mental disorders that contemporaries believed altered the body …

Haremization Of Desdemona: A Comparative Study Of Shakespeare’S Othello In The Ottoman Context, Tulin Ece Tosun May 2018

Haremization Of Desdemona: A Comparative Study Of Shakespeare’S Othello In The Ottoman Context, Tulin Ece Tosun

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation takes a comparative approach by setting Shakespeare’s Othello within the context of Ottoman history and the Ottoman harem to represent current Middle Eastern trends in the field of Comparative Literature. I argue that Othello paints a portrait of stereotypical Muslim characteristics drawn from the travel narratives of Richard Hakluyt, Richard Knolles, and Paul Rycaut. I use these travel narratives to identify cross-cultural relationships, comparisons, interactions, and psychology. In my final chapter, I argue that from a certain perspective, Othello is a Turk because Shakespeare turns the citadel in Cyprus into a harem. The word harem, stemming from the …

Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman May 2018

Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is the first full-length study to analyze the politicization of dress and material objects, exploring the manner in which fashion served as a site for political discourse and agency, during the seventeenth century, specifically from 1603–1702, an era characterized by profound political, religious, and social turmoil as well as increased international trade and luxury consumption. This dissertation demonstrates how fashion, which encompassed clothing, accessories, hairstyling, and cosmetics, was an important facet of political culture within Stuart England and, furthermore, was absolutely fundamental to how the English understood themselves, others, and the turbulent world they lived in. I argue …

Using Tangible Interaction And Virtual Reality To Support Spatial Perspective Taking Ability, Shen-Kuen Chang May 2018

Using Tangible Interaction And Virtual Reality To Support Spatial Perspective Taking Ability, Shen-Kuen Chang

Open Access Dissertations

According to several large-scale and longitudinal studies, spatial ability, one of the primary mental abilities, has been shown as a significant predictor for STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and career success. Frameworks in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and TEI (Tangible and Embodied Interaction) also indicated how the spatial-related aspects of interaction are a common design theme for interfaces using emerging technologies. However, currently only very few interactive systems (using TEI) are designed around a target spatial ability. TEI’s direct effects on spatial ability are also not well-investigated. Meanwhile, a growing body of research from cognitive sciences, such as embodied …

Effect Of Cue Cardinality, Cue Representation And Judgment Options On Human Judgments, Harsh Wardhan Aggarwal May 2018

Effect Of Cue Cardinality, Cue Representation And Judgment Options On Human Judgments, Harsh Wardhan Aggarwal

Open Access Dissertations

Judgment studies using different set of cues have been used from over 50 years to understand how people make judgments. Brunswik’s Lens Model, a regression model which combines the ecological and the human’s judgment model using a common set of cues, has been the primary tool of choice for these judgment studies. Yet, despite a common model, there is no consensus on how much information people need to make judgments, or how the information should be represented or even how the judgment options should be presented to people. Therefore, this study in the first phase, used a Monte Carlo simulation …

Couple-Based Stress Management Intervention And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Cfs) Biopsychological Processes, Sara F. Milrad Apr 2018

Couple-Based Stress Management Intervention And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Cfs) Biopsychological Processes, Sara F. Milrad

Open Access Dissertations

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating illness that is characterized by heterogeneous, systemic symptoms that impact patients’ and their caregiving partners’ quality of life. Extant literature has found hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neuroimmune biomarkers associated with the disorder, but the impact of relationship satisfaction and patients’ communication satisfaction about symptoms on these CFS-relevant biological markers and on CFS patients’ CFS symptom severity has not been examined. Like others suffering from incapacitating chronic illnesses, CFS patients are often homebound, on disability, and/or face unemployment; however, people suffering from CFS report significantly less social support and more stigma from society, as …

A Contemporary Improvisational Methodology For The Cellist, Ian Calder Flatt Apr 2018

A Contemporary Improvisational Methodology For The Cellist, Ian Calder Flatt

Open Access Dissertations

Musical improvisation curriculums are currently in the process of being created as part of the performance training of classical string players. However, as a performance practice there is currently no educational method that addresses technical methodology as related specifically to the cello. This dissertation provides background research into areas of learning that include theories of improvisational methods specifically designed for the cellist and creative practice approaches that compliment conservatory-style repertoire based education. This is all framed within a new approach to fingerboard visualization as maps of tonal harmony for creative interpretation and continual study. Recommendations for further study and additional …

Phantom Arabic, Dislocated French: Auto-Anthropological Imaginaries:Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia,Leila Sebbar, Nabil Ayouch, Amine Zidouh Apr 2018

Phantom Arabic, Dislocated French: Auto-Anthropological Imaginaries:Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia,Leila Sebbar, Nabil Ayouch, Amine Zidouh

Open Access Dissertations

This study combines sociolinguistics with literary, cultural and cinematographic studies in the analysis of works by Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia, Leila Sebbar and Nabil Ayouch. This dissertation’s main argument is that an understanding of the relationship between what is to be conceived as Phantom Arabic and Dislocated French is crucial to the critical repositioning and re-questioning of a significant part of postcolonial cultural production emanating from North Africa and/or the North African diaspora. This thesis intervenes in current debates in French and Francophone Studies, in Arabic and Comparative Studies, but also in Sociolinguistics (particularly as related to North Africa, the …

Parent-Teacher Agreement On Problem Behavior In Kindergarten Children With And Without An Individualized Education Program, Chelsea Tey Morris Apr 2018

Parent-Teacher Agreement On Problem Behavior In Kindergarten Children With And Without An Individualized Education Program, Chelsea Tey Morris

Open Access Dissertations

Problem behavior in kindergarten children, if severe or persistent, can lead to negative outcomes including school disciplinary responses such as expulsion. The perceptions of both teachers and parents are important in identifying young children’s problem behavior; however, studies indicate that teachers’ and parents’ ratings of children’s problem behavior are often discrepant. Using data from a nationally representative sample of children (Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort 2010-11; ECLS-K, 2011), the present study investigated such discrepancies in kindergarten students whose behavior ratings by their teachers indicated moderate to severe behavior problems (n = 3,310). For children in the analytic sample who …

Boycotting Or Buycotting? An Investigation Of Consumer Emotional Responses Towards Brand Activism, Cheng Hong Apr 2018

Boycotting Or Buycotting? An Investigation Of Consumer Emotional Responses Towards Brand Activism, Cheng Hong

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the emotive and attitudinal antecedents of consumer boycotting and buycotting behaviors in the context of brand activism. Public support was introduced as a potential moderator interacting with (a) attitude consistency, and (b) discrete emotions, in terms of their impact on attitudinal and behavioral outcome variables. The dissertation integrated the discrete emotion approach, as well as the theoretical framework of spiral of silence theory, the social loafing effect, and bystander effect. It was argued that not all discrete emotions impacted boycotting and buycotting behaviors equally. Furthermore, opposite moderation directions of public support were proposed based on two different …

Memorization: Survey And Application With Special Emphasis On The Left Hand, Deyana Ilieva Valchinova Apr 2018

Memorization: Survey And Application With Special Emphasis On The Left Hand, Deyana Ilieva Valchinova

Open Access Dissertations

Memorization plays an important role among music performers, especially pianists, since pianists are expected and encouraged to give performances, exams, and juries from memory. Memorization is not often addressed by pedagogues, and students seldom approach memorization with specific techniques and strategies. More importantly, the chief reason for memory slips as well as poor understanding of the music material is not discussed in depth: the left hand. The need for this study stems from the importance of focusing on the left-hand memory, and how to develop practical and sound memorization habits for it. Furthermore, the purpose of the essay is to …
