"Terrorists” Imaginaries: Social Exclusion, Queerness, Repressive Apparatus And The Emergence Of Post-Religious Terrorism In Contemporary Maghrebian Francophone Literature And Film, Thouraya Ferid
Open Access Dissertations
I examine the narratives imaginaries of Terrorism among some authors and filmmakers between 2007 and 2012. I argue that these oeuvres give rise to a new understanding of terrorism that is rooted in a series of traumatic experiences endured by the subject. These humiliations lead to the urgent need of a radical revenge: The terrorist act. The new terrorism is rooted in the "radical multitude" of oppressed singularities. Literary and cinematic fiction from the Maghreb can be considered as what Saldivar in "Unsettling Race, Coloniality and Caste” (2007), calls a "locus of enunciation" on terrorism. This enables the emergence of …
Exploring College Readiness For Hispanic Middle School Students: Relationship Between Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Facets., Christina R. Barcinas
Exploring College Readiness For Hispanic Middle School Students: Relationship Between Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Facets., Christina R. Barcinas
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to seek the potential factors affecting Hispanic middle school students’ college readiness. Although it is important that students begin preparing for college as early as middle school, Hispanic students often fall behind in their readiness for college. The current study examined whether Hispanic middle school students’ college readiness is related to students’ perceived family engagement and college awareness. Research questions examined in the study were: (1) How does college awareness relate to college readiness of middle school Hispanic students? and (2) How do students’ perceptions of family engagement relate to college readiness of middle …
Giving Voice To Underserved Foreign-Born Latino Youth: Trauma, Stress, And Health In The Primary Care Setting, Ashley Nicole Marchante-Hoffman
Giving Voice To Underserved Foreign-Born Latino Youth: Trauma, Stress, And Health In The Primary Care Setting, Ashley Nicole Marchante-Hoffman
Open Access Dissertations
Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is common in the United States and may be more frequent among foreign-born Latino youth. Research has shown that PTEs negatively affect mental health outcomes, such as depression and anxiety. However, less is known about physical health outcomes during childhood and adolescence. Furthermore, foreign-born Latino youth, who are often a high-risk group, have been largely neglected in the trauma literature. Thus, the purpose of this study was to: (1) examine rates of pre-, during, and post-migration PTEs in foreign-born Latino youth and (2) assess the relationship between PTEs and markers of physical health problems …
The Allocation Of Attentional Resources: Exploring Fluctuations In Mind Wandering With Variation In Performance And Affective Variables, Marissa Krimsky
The Allocation Of Attentional Resources: Exploring Fluctuations In Mind Wandering With Variation In Performance And Affective Variables, Marissa Krimsky
Open Access Dissertations
Mind wandering (MW) corresponds to performance across a variety of tasks, especially sustained attention. MW has been shown to increase with task-related requirements such as time-on-task, and individual differences, such as depression, and negative mood. The present study sought to investigate mechanisms that increase MW, specifically task-related requirements and individual differences tied to negative mood and depressive symptomology. Participants (N = 69) completed self-report measures of depression and negative mood and the sustained attention to response task (SART) with subjective measures of MW assessed intermittently throughout the task. Self-reported MW and task performance (variability in response time, and non-target accuracy) …
Developing, Evaluating And Utilizing A Measurement Approach To Index The Fidelity Of Subjective Reports During A Sustained Attention Task, Joshua Daniel Rooks
Developing, Evaluating And Utilizing A Measurement Approach To Index The Fidelity Of Subjective Reports During A Sustained Attention Task, Joshua Daniel Rooks
Open Access Dissertations
In the current program of research, a Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) statistical approach was utilized to develop a novel metric of the veridicality of one’s subjective reports on the state of their attention. This metric, termed the Fidelity of Subjective Reports (FSR), was statistically operationalized as the within-individual correspondence between self-report and behavioral performance measures of attention on the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART). The first objective was to identify the ideal window of behavioral performance data on the SART to relate to subjective reports. Secondly, the construct validity for the FSR, based on a preliminary conceptual model of …
Health-Related Quality Of Life Instruments For Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants: Development Of Child And Parent-Proxy Measures, Michael Farrell Hoffman
Health-Related Quality Of Life Instruments For Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants: Development Of Child And Parent-Proxy Measures, Michael Farrell Hoffman
Open Access Dissertations
Severe to profound hearing loss is associated with measurable deficits in health-related quality of life (HRQoL), reflecting its concomitant effects on oral language, social and emotional functioning, and academic performance. HRQoL is a multidimensional construct that encompasses four core domains: 1) disease severity and physical symptoms, 2) functional status, 3) emotional/cognitive functioning, and 4) social skills (Aaronson, 1989; Palermo et al., 2008). However, studies of cochlear implantation (CI) have focused on clinical measures of efficacy related to language and communication (e.g., auditory, speech, language skills), and have not captured the implant’s effects on daily functioning. HRQoL measures provide a unique …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Concept-Based And Grammar-Based Methods Of Instruction On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive Among Heritage And Second Language Learners Of Spanish, Antoni Fernandez Parera
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the outcomes of two different types of instructional approaches on advanced second language (L2) learners and intermediate heritage language (HL) learners of Spanish. Two methodologically distinct pedagogical interventions were conducted: 1) MCE (Mindful Conceptual Engagement), derived from the principles set in Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of mind (SCT); and 2) Grammar-Based Instruction, which is based upon more traditional methods of instruction involving the description and practice of grammatical content (e.g., fill-in-the blank exercises). Both interventions focused on usage of the subjunctive in variable contexts where the indicative was possible, but with a subsequent change in meaning (e.g., Busco …
Estimating Individual Treatment Effect In Observational Data Using Random Forest Methods, Min Lu
Estimating Individual Treatment Effect In Observational Data Using Random Forest Methods, Min Lu
Open Access Dissertations
Estimation of individual treatment effect in observational data is complicated due to the challenges of confounding and selection bias. A useful inferential framework to address this is the counterfactual model which takes the hypothetical stance of asking what if an individual had received both treatments. Making use of random forests (RF) within the counterfactual framework, I estimate individual treatment effects by directly modeling the response. This thesis consists of five Chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the methodology in causal inference and provide mathematical notations. Major approaches reviewed include potential outcome approach, graphical approach and counterfactual approach. Chapter 2 discusses assumptions for …
Physiological And Affective Reactivity To Emotional Comments In Individuals At High Risk For Psychosis, Marc Joshua Weintraub
Physiological And Affective Reactivity To Emotional Comments In Individuals At High Risk For Psychosis, Marc Joshua Weintraub
Open Access Dissertations
Psychotic symptoms are distributed along a continuum, ranging from subclinical experiences to clinically-defined psychosis. Individuals who are on the clinically diagnosable end of the psychosis spectrum (e.g. schizophrenia) tend to have a heightened sensitivity to social stressors, like Expressed Emotion (EE). EE measures how critical or overly-involved a family member is towards an identified patient, and is positively associated with higher rates of relapse and greater symptomatic presentations following a patient’s hospitalization. Additionally, the mere exposure to a family member who is high in EE leads to greater physiological arousal in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. It is …

Non-Cognitive Factors That Contribute To The Black Gender Gap In Community College Persistence, Simeon Antonio Richardson
Open Access Dissertations
Although female college students in the United States from all racial and ethnic groups outperform their male counterparts in key academic areas, including retention and persistence rates, the college persistence gap between Black women and Black men is the widest. The purpose of this study was to explore if there is a difference in intent-to-persist between Black males and Black females and to identify the role non-cognitive factors may play. The survey results obtained from self-identified Black students at one community college were analyzed using a hierarchical multiple regression with four subsequent blocks to explore the effect on intent-to-persist using …
Protective Multi-Level Factors In Adolescents Of Mothers With Mental Disorders, Chante Evette Washington-Oates
Protective Multi-Level Factors In Adolescents Of Mothers With Mental Disorders, Chante Evette Washington-Oates
Open Access Dissertations
Maternal mental disorders (MD), including substance use, are chronic conditions associated with poor child mental health. Yet, some children of these mothers thrive and experience healthy development and functioning. Despite this, little research examines protective factors, e.g., parenting practices and self-management beliefs and behaviors, in children of mothers with MD. This dissertation was ancillary to a randomized trial of a family-based intervention for mothers with MD and their children. The aims of this dissertation were to: 1) examine whether maternal positive parenting practices are related to adolescent emotional (internalizing) and behavioral (externalizing) problems, after controlling for mother’s psychological distress and …

Educational Experiences And Academic Adjustment Of Transfer Students At The Four-Year University, Jacklyn A. Collins
Open Access Dissertations
Education has been perceived as the key pathway that individuals utilize to achieve economic success and upward mobility, yet how that education is acquired is not a lock-step process. According to the 2015 Signature 9 Report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, students made 2.4 million (37.2%) transitions from one institution to another between 2008 and 2014 (Shapiro et al., 2015). However, according to Student Achievement Measurement (n.d.), only 11% of students who transfer from four-year to four-year institution complete a bachelor’s degree, which is much smaller than the 71.7% of full-time students who start at a four-year institution …

Knowledge Acquisition And Representation Methodology (Knarm) And Its Applications, Hande Küçük Mcginty
Open Access Dissertations
Technological advancements in many fields have led to huge increases in data production, including data volume, diversity, and the speed at which new data is becoming available. In accordance with this, there is a lack of conformity in the ways data is interpreted. In-depth analyses making use of various data types and data sources, and extracting knowledge has become one of the many challenges with this big data. This is especially the case in life-sciences where simplification and flattening of diverse data types often leads to incorrect predictions. Effective applications of big data approaches in the life sciences require better, …

Prospects For A Data-Driven Task-Fmri Ontology, Taylor Sullivan Bolt
Prospects For A Data-Driven Task-Fmri Ontology, Taylor Sullivan Bolt
Open Access Dissertations
The growing literature of task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (task-fMRI) has increased calls for an adequate organizing ontology, or taxonomy, of task fMRI experiments. Researchers differ over what should be the dominant features of such an ontology: should it be concrete/observable dimensions, such as task paradigm (e.g. n-back vs. flanker task), or latent/theoretical dimensions, such as cognitive domains (e.g. working-memory vs. bottom-up attention)? This dissertation attempts to address what is important for a task-fMRI ontology in a quantifiable manner. We use a simple quantitative criterion for categories/dimensions of a task-fMRI ontology: the ability to explain observed variations in task-fMRI activation …

Towards The Development Of An Integrated Theory Of Macro-Level Crime: A Multilevel And Geospatial Analysis Of Anomic Disorganization Theory, Eric Ramsey Louderback
Open Access Dissertations
In recent years, the United States has experienced increasing structural trends of steeply increasing crime rates in some urban neighborhoods and a widening gap in wealth and income inequality between social classes. The primary criminological theory applied to explain neighborhood crime rates is social disorganization theory, while the primary theory linking economic inequality to crime outcomes is institutional anomie theory. However, while there is an increasing trend in the literature towards integrating current theoretical perspectives to better explain macro-level crime, no integrated theoretical frameworks have been developed to explain neighborhood crime patterns applying social disorganization theory at the neighborhood-level and …

A Trust Management Framework For Decision Support Systems, Yefeng Ruan
A Trust Management Framework For Decision Support Systems, Yefeng Ruan
Open Access Dissertations
In the era of information explosion, it is critical to develop a framework which can extract useful information and help people to make “educated” decisions. In our lives, whether we are aware of it, trust has turned out to be very helpful for us to make decisions. At the same time, cognitive trust, especially in large systems, such as Facebook, Twitter, and so on, needs support from computer systems. Therefore, we need a framework that can effectively, but also intuitively, let people express their trust, and enable the system to automatically and securely summarize the massive amounts of trust information, …
Sustainable Supply Planning Of By-Product Minerals: A Case Study On Indium, Chul Hun Choi
Sustainable Supply Planning Of By-Product Minerals: A Case Study On Indium, Chul Hun Choi
Open Access Dissertations
Clean energy technologies represent a promising solution to the global warming challenge. However, many clean energy technologies depend on some rare materials, and concerns about demand of the materials have been raised recently. To make the concerns getting even worse, the materials are usually by-products of base metals, thus the supplies highly rely on the demand and production of the base metals. Indium is one of these materials. It is critical for two emerging clean energy applications, that is, copper indium gallium selenide photovoltaic, and light-emitting diode lighting. Like other rare materials, indium is also a by-product of base metal, …
Choosing Wickedness: Moral Evil In Kant's Religion, Changtze Chia
Choosing Wickedness: Moral Evil In Kant's Religion, Changtze Chia
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation concerns Kant’s doctrine of radical evil. The doctrine consists in the following two claims: (1) The propensity to evil is a universal propensity, found in every human being. It is therefore an innate disposition. (2) Every human being is morally responsible for the propensity to evil found in him. It is therefore a disposition that is freely chosen. The poor reception Kant’s doctrine of radical evil has received over the centuries can be traced to his insistence on these two claims. The doctrine has been censured for two reasons: (1) Kant appeals to empirical evidence in his argument …

It explored the levels of comfort and barriers that educators possessed when they communicated SHE to adolescents. One community within the State of Indiana was examined; at the time of the study. Eleven 7-12th grade educators among three school districts shared their beliefs, values, and feelings regarding SHE instruction and levels of sexuality comfort. As a result, the concept of sexuality comfort was reconstructed, and three findings …
Neural Encoding And Decoding With Deep Learning For Natural Vision, Haiguang Wen
Neural Encoding And Decoding With Deep Learning For Natural Vision, Haiguang Wen
Open Access Dissertations
The overarching objective of this work is to bridge neuroscience and artificial intelligence to ultimately build machines that learn, act, and think like humans. In the context of vision, the brain enables humans to readily make sense of the visual world, e.g. recognizing visual objects. Developing human-like machines requires understanding the working principles underlying the human vision. In this dissertation, I ask how the brain encodes and represents dynamic visual information from the outside world, whether brain activity can be directly decoded to reconstruct and categorize what a person is seeing, and whether neuroscience theory can be applied to artificial …
Evidentiary Reasoning: An Examination Of Elementary And Middle School Students' Knowledge Of Scientific Evidence In Biology, Jamison Wills
Evidentiary Reasoning: An Examination Of Elementary And Middle School Students' Knowledge Of Scientific Evidence In Biology, Jamison Wills
Open Access Dissertations
This project examines upper elementary and middle school students’ knowledge of scientific evidence. Informed by literature in cognitive development, learning sciences, and science education, this proposal argues that science educators have typically treated evidence as a simple and unitary construct that is disconnected from other phases of scientific activity. Evidence in the philosophy and history of science, on the other hand, is multifaceted, sophisticated, and involves the coordination of disciplinary knowledge and methodological practices. Based on a conceptual analysis of evidence in this literature, I developed a framework of evidential dimensions that important to scientific reasoning. Two fifth and two …
