Response Elimination Using Response-Contingent And Response-Contiguous Schedules, Thomas S. Rieg
Response Elimination Using Response-Contingent And Response-Contiguous Schedules, Thomas S. Rieg
Open Access Dissertations
The experiment collected both molar and molecular data to compare the effect Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO), Fixed Time (FT), Variable Time (VT), and Extinction (EXT) schedules of reinforcement have on decreasing the frequency of a trained response in rats. The purpose of comparing these schedules was to investigate the relationship between responses and reinforcements in order to determine whether contingency theory or contiguity theory explains the differential effects frequently reported in the literature. Collecting data at both the molar and molecular level allowed a more conclusive theoretical explanation of the suppressive effects seen with these schedules. The experiment …
Relationships Between Communication Style Variables And Sales Effectiveness, Elaine M. Notarantonio
Relationships Between Communication Style Variables And Sales Effectiveness, Elaine M. Notarantonio
Open Access Dissertations
This research involves two studies which investigated the relationship of communication style variables with effective sales performance. Norton's (1978) communication style construct was used as a guiding framework.
Study 1, examined 74 real estate agents' self-reports of communication style, performance and general sales practices used. In addition, objective measures of respondent's performance were obtained from company records.
A stepwise regression analysis revealed the construct of precise as the only significant predictor of income. A step-wise discriminant analysis showed that the constructs of precise and impression-leaving were significant discriminators among groups of salespeople who were categorized based on income.

Retention Of Distributed Versus Massed Response Prevention Treatments In An Animal Model, Paula J. Martasian
Retention Of Distributed Versus Massed Response Prevention Treatments In An Animal Model, Paula J. Martasian
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was twofold. One purpose was to examine the efficiency of escape training as a procedure for conditioning fear. The second and main focus was to investigate the efficacy of repeated response prevention treatments and the retention of these treatment effects. Response prevention (RP) has been shown to significantly decrease avoidance behavior in the laboratory setting. However, past research has also shown the return of avoidance behavior over repeated testings. It was hypothesized that increasing the number of RP treatments, and distributing them, would increase the retention of avoidance reduction over repeated testings. It was predicted …

Learned Helplessness As A Function Of Social Structure, William T. Oswald
Learned Helplessness As A Function Of Social Structure, William T. Oswald
Open Access Dissertations
The present study explored the development of learned helplessness. The major question examined whether learned helplessness and its related attributional style were global or situation specific. It was hypothesized that the more bureaucratically structured a situation was perceived to be the more learned helplessness would be manifested. It was argued that the relationship between organizational control and individual commitment could be explained by the reformulated learned helplessness hypothesis.
Subjects in the study were 154 college freshmen and sophomores aged 18 to 24. All subjects completed a questionnaire which assessed individual characteristics (socioeconomic status, locus of control and previous experience in …

Picture Images Of Girls And Women In Children's Literature, Diane M. Turner-Bowker
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the underlying meanings conveyed by media images to preschool age children in three samples of award-winning picture books. One general hypothesis was that female characters would be underrepresented in illustrations found in children's picture books relative to male characters. A second hypothesis was that female characters would more often be portrayed in subordinate and degrading images than male characters. It was predicted that girls/women would be presented more often than boys/men in traditional and passive roles, shorter, below, behind, in deference (bent over, head tilted), as objects of ownership (arm-lock, shoulder-hold, …
