It is the purpose of this research to investigate the relationship of ethnicity and self-concept. Relationship here means that self-concept varies with ethnicity even when other variables, such as social class, age, etc. are similar.
In the literature review, the argument is developed that perceptions of self are in part formulated from the perception of oneself as being ethnic or having a particular ethnic heritage. These ethnic perceptions include belief systems, patterns of emotions, expectations, perceptions of the environment, sense of reality, interpretive schemes for interacting in the world, etc. In the development of self-perception or self-concept, these perceptions that …

National Stereotypes And Their Relationship To Self-Perceptions In Irish, Italian, And American College Students, Caroline M. Salvatore

This study examined self-perceptions, and, their relationship to heterostereotypes and auto stereotypes in three groups: Irish students from the University Colleges of Dublin, Galway, and St. Patrick's College in Dublin; Italian students from the - University of Palermo in Sicily; and American students at the Community College of Rhode Island, Bryant College, and the University of Rhode Island.
It was predicted that, as a reflection of greater cultural homogeneity, a higher degree of within-group similarity would be found in the self-perceptions of both Italian and Irish students than in the self-perceptions of American students. It was further predicted that differences …

The Relationship Between “Rapid Induction” And Placebo Analgesia, Hypnotic Susceptibility, And Chronic Pain Intensity, Lorraine Luke Snow

The effects of Rapid (hypnotic) Induction Analgesia (RIA) and an oral placebo on clinical and experimental pain were compared in 30 volunteer male paraplegic veterans with chronic pain syndrome. Scores of hypnotic susceptibility and chronic pain experience were also correlated with the effects of RIA on clinical and experimental pain. Self-ratings of S’s clinical pain on a 0-100 scale were obtained before and after RIA and placebo treatments. Threshold and tolerance for ischemic muscle pain (experimental pain) was measured during baseline control, RIA, and placebo sessions. The general linear hypothesis was used to analyse the data. The purpose of this investigation was to examine a model of interacting with life situations which does not carry with it the restrictions implicit in the masculinity-femininity-androgeny concepts. However, the model includes positive aspects of behavior generally imbedded in the masculinity- femininity concepts. This model utilizes David Bakan's (1966) concepts of agency and communion, modifying his description of these modes of interacting and positing a complementary (completing, non-conflicting) relation between them. An agency/communion theoretical model was developed which emphasizes the potential for balance between the modes. Problems with the traditional gender dichotomy were discussed. Witkin and his associates have done extensive work on the relation of various perceptual tasks to broader personality dimensions. An avenue opened by this research which was of particular significance to this paper concerns the relationship between field dependence-independence and the individual's sense of separate identity. The more articulated the cognitive style, the more there is a manifestation of a sense of separate identity which includes such things as an awareness of needs and feeling which the person recognizes as his own and as distinct from others.
