Assessment Of Preferences For Individuals With Severe Disabilities, Meghan Foster Jan 2008

Assessment Of Preferences For Individuals With Severe Disabilities, Meghan Foster

Masters Theses

Identifying preferences for individuals with disabilities is a big challenge for behavior analysts, teachers, and parents. Some individuals with disabilities lack the ability to verbally communicate their likes and dislikes, or wants and needs on a daily basis. When a loved one or teacher mistakes an indication of preference and produces an undesirable stimulus, this frequently causes aberrant responses. For these reasons, it is important that an efficient means of identifying preferences for individuals with disabilities is devised. The following pages examine areas of research into the study of individual preferences for specific stimuli and the different means of assessing …

Hannah Dustan: A Seventeenth-Century Text Still In Progress, Janice Derr Jan 2008

Hannah Dustan: A Seventeenth-Century Text Still In Progress, Janice Derr

Masters Theses

This thesis traces the path of Hannah Dustan's story of captivity from its first appearance in the seventeenth century through today and explores the cultural history and significance behind her story. Dustan's story of her capture and bloody escape from the Abenaki tribe was first told by Puritan minister Cotton Mather, in his 1697 sermon Humiliations Follow 'd with Deliverance. Incorporating captivity narratives into sermons was not atypical, but it may surprise modem readers to find a story with a protagonist who commits murder in a sermon about humiliation. By examining primary documents and exploring the history of the captivity …

Masters Theses

"Analysis of geochemistry, mineralogy, total organic content (TOC) and rock evaluation pyrolysis on Woodford Shale well cuttings taken from a horizontal well (Quaid 13-30H) drilled in the Arkoma Basin (Pittsburg County), Oklahoma shows no significant variation in the thermal maturity, type, and/or quantity of organic matter. This is interpreted to mean that the organic matter of the Woodford Shale is relatively homogeneous and has all undergone similar thermal history. In addition, the analysis shows that there are lateral variations in the gas geochemistry in which the shale appears to be broken up into sections, some of which are more enhanced …

Block Level Link Path Design And Multilayer Via Transition Model Assembly Using S-Parameters, Francesco De Paulis Jan 2008

Block Level Link Path Design And Multilayer Via Transition Model Assembly Using S-Parameters, Francesco De Paulis

Masters Theses

"In high-speed data communication systems the complexity of link path between transmitters and receivers present a challenge for designers to maintain an acceptable bit error rate. An approach is presented in this thesis to design the link path on a block-by-block basis. The unique advantage of this approach lies on the physics-based model of each block, which then relates performance to geometry and makes design improvement and optimization possible. A tool based on the manipulation of frequency domain data has been designed to help in the design and analysis process of fast communication systems. It accepts as inputs the frequency …

Preserd - Privacy Ensured Service Discovery In Mobile Peer-To-Peer Environment, Santhosh Muthyapu Jan 2008

Preserd - Privacy Ensured Service Discovery In Mobile Peer-To-Peer Environment, Santhosh Muthyapu

Masters Theses

"In mobile peer-to-peer networks many service discovery protocols have been proposed. Most of these protocols disregard the exposure of the participating peers' privacy details, although they consider the security issues. In these methods, the participating peers must provide their identities, during the service discovery process, to be authorized to utilize the service. However, a peer might not be willing to reveal its identity until it identifies the service providing peer. So these peers face a problem; should the requesting peer or the service providing peer reveal the identity first, and hence, this is similar to the chicken-and-egg problem. The protocol …

Femtosecond Laser Micro-Structuring Of Silicon Wafer In Water Confinement, Songping Wu Jan 2008

Femtosecond Laser Micro-Structuring Of Silicon Wafer In Water Confinement, Songping Wu

Masters Theses

"This thesis investigates the use of femtosecond laser induced surface morphology on silicon wafer surface in water confinement. Unlike irradiation of silicon surfaces in the air, there are no laser induced periodic structures, but irregular roughness is formed when the silicon wafer is ablated under water. Interestingly, a particular parameter combination enables a smooth surface, which can improve the surface quality of micro-machining products. This thesis first investigates the single ablation and multi-pulse ablation processes in order to study the effects of laser parameters on ablation morphology, as well as the basic physics and mechanism of the laser-material interaction process …

In the present work, struvite precipitation in the actual swine wastewater was studied by strategically controlling aeration, pH, and mixing"--Abstract, page iv.

Derivation Of New Double-Input Dc-Dc Converters Using The Building Block Methodology, Karteek Gummi Jan 2008

Derivation Of New Double-Input Dc-Dc Converters Using The Building Block Methodology, Karteek Gummi

Masters Theses

"In most power electronic systems, the instantaneous input and output power vary by time and are not exactly identical with each other. Hence, providing a good match between them is a complicated task to deal with if not impossible. Furthermore, due to the wide variation range of the processed power, the overall efficiency of the system is not high. The solution is to hybridize the system using an energy storage unit like in hybrid electric vehicles, power factor correction systems, and photovoltaic systems. Multi-input converters play a key role in such hybridized systems, where it is required to have more …

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots, Shweta Annapurani Panimadai Ramaswamy Jan 2008

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots, Shweta Annapurani Panimadai Ramaswamy

Masters Theses

"A traditional tracking and control design approach already available in literature is derived and discussed for a car-like mobile robot. It involves a decoupled design involving two separate algorithms, one for velocity control design and another for torque control design. Weak interactions among the algorithms and separate designs make the robot performance optimization and the formation stability difficult to achieve. So, a new tracking and control architecture wherein the conventional elements are replaced by a single component that performs all the functions and hence called the integrated tracking and control scheme is used"--Abstract, page iii.

A Coarse-Grain Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Nanotribological Properties Of Nanoparticle Solutions, Ramesh Chembeti Jan 2008

A Coarse-Grain Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Nanotribological Properties Of Nanoparticle Solutions, Ramesh Chembeti

Masters Theses

"In this study, solutions of alkanethiol-capped nanoparticles in alkane are examined using molecular dynamics simulations for their nanotribological potential based on the hypothesis that fluid molecules of very different sizes may interrupt each other's layering tendency to result in less layered or non-layered configurations and provide better lubrication for nanodevices. An effective nanoparticle-nanoparticle pair potential based on previous atomistic approach is used and the temperature and parallel pressure are controlled in place of chemical potential for defining thermodynamic state. When compressed, the confined nanoparticle-containing alkane films generate reduced oscillations in perpendicular forces and smoother expansion in lateral dimensions, indicating lesser …

Statistical Estimation Of Crosstalk For Cable Bundles, Meilin Wu Jan 2008

Statistical Estimation Of Crosstalk For Cable Bundles, Meilin Wu

Masters Theses

"Predicting electromagnetic interference problems for cable bundles early in the design stage is of significant value for both automotive and other industries. Effective methods are needed for predicting interference when little design information is known. The random variation in parameters like wire position in the bundle require that statistical variations be taken into account. In the first part of this thesis, a method to analytically predict the "reasonable worst-case crosstalk" within a cable bundle is proposed. The method uses the per-unit-length LC matrices associated with the cross-sectional geometry of the bundle to generate probability a distribution function for mutual inductance …

Role Of Microtubules In Budding Yeast Cytokinesis, Su Young Park Jan 2008

Role Of Microtubules In Budding Yeast Cytokinesis, Su Young Park

Masters Theses

"Cytokinesis is an important step to finish cell cycle events and separate into two daughter cells. This event is driven by actomyosin ring contraction. In budding yeast, the mitotic exit network (MEN) controls completion of ana/telophase by signaling events. Bub2 is a mitotic exit network regulator and binds to Tem1p which is an important component in MEN. Mad2 is a component of a separate spindle checkpoint. Mad2 dependent pathway prevents the metaphase to anaphase transition under spindle damage. Because yeast cells have cell walls, septum formation follows actin ring contraction. Here it was investigated how microtubule defects affect cytokinesis in …
