Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova
Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova
Masters Theses
Rural areas are less developed than urban. It is well known that rural workers are more likely to suffer from the lower wages than their counterparts from metro areas. Policymakers wrestle with the issue of "brain drain" in rural areas and, therefore, a loss of tax income in rural counties. "Brain drain" happens when professionals leave rural counties for metropolitans to earn higher returns to education. This thesis will shed light on some sides of rural development connected with the returns to education.
The main goal of this research is to estimate and compare wages and returns to education in …
"Freedom In Working": Representations Of Working Women In Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton, Ruth, And North And South, Amy King
Masters Theses
In my M.A. thesis, I explore Elizabeth Gaskell's representations of women workers in her three novels, Mary Barton, Ruth, and North and South through the context of Victorian domestic ideology and social class. I argue that Elizabeth Gaskell supported and challenged the accepted gender roles for women. Through a close reading of her novels and short stories, I analyzed the reasons behind her conflicting and ambiguous portrayals of working women. I argue that while Gaskell clearly advocated domestic work as the "natural" work for women, her views on wage-earning labor varied; however she suggests that women, regardless of class, could …

Behavioral Response Of Japanese Beetles (Popillia Japonica) To Sex Pheromone: Exploring Factors Of Social Situation And Recent Mating Experience, Carissa A. Schoenick
Masters Theses
Insects in have several methods of advertising for mates; one important and common method is via the use of chemical pheromones. Insects release pheromones into the environment to communicate information about their sex, mating status and receptivity to others. For example, Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) produce a very volatile sex pheromone conspecifics can readily detect. This pheromone is released by virgin females only, and triggers scramble competition among the males that detect and follow the signal for access to these females. Because Japanese beetles are an invasive species and an important pest of ornamental and agricultural plants, there is strong …

Reexamining Depressive Realism Using Estimates Of Real Life Events, Lindsay Babcock
Reexamining Depressive Realism Using Estimates Of Real Life Events, Lindsay Babcock
Masters Theses
Early reports of the phenomenon known as depressive realism suggest the counter-intuitive notion that depressed people are more accurate in their perception of reality. These studies have been criticized for relying solely on judging control over laboratory tasks that do not relate to real life and for the use of deception. The present study investigates the relationship between depression, anxiety, locus of control, and accuracy of judgments with an emphasis on real world occurrences, as well as examining individuals' confidence in their judgments. While depression, anxiety, and locus of control were all found to be highly correlated, significant results were …
Conditional Reasoning In Depression, Niyati Sheth
Conditional Reasoning In Depression, Niyati Sheth
Masters Theses
Most of the studies on reasoning have suggested that individuals with depression show poor performance on reasoning tasks (Channon & Baker, 1994). Previous researches and major theories attempt to explain the association between errors in reasoning process and working memory limitations (Braine, 1994; Gilhooly et. al., 1993; Johnson-Laird, 1983). Research also shows that working memory is impaired in individuals with depression (Channon, Baker & Robertson, 1993; Christopher & MacDonald, 2005). Hence, as per this view, depressed individuals perfonn poorly on reasoning tasks because of working memory limitation or preload rather than their ability to manipulate relevant infonnation (Channon & Baker, …

Maximum Likelihood Fusion For Detection Of Led Precursors Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Pratik Shah
Masters Theses
"Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) pose an increasing threat to the safety of soldiers and civilians in embattled areas. The use of compounds such as RDX complicates the detection of IEDs, as these compounds are often hard to identify in the presence of contaminants such as alcohol, oils and dust. Spectroscopic techniques such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman have shown promise for the detection of explosive compounds; however, their accuracy is limited, as noise can cause variations in the peak strengths and locations that they utilize for classification.
The research presented in this thesis applies signal processing to the …
