Optimization Of Parameters And Study Of Kinetics In Lactulose Production By Lactose Isomerization Using Strong Basic Anion Exchange Resin, Arvind Nanduri
Masters Theses
"In this work, an experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of different operating conditions on the isomerization of lactose to lactulose by using strong basic anion exchange resin (AMBERLITE-IRA 402). Temperature, resin/lactose mass ratio and pH were considered to be the three factors affecting the conversion of lactose. Box-Behnken design was then used to optimize the operating conditions for maximum response and also to study the various interaction and main effects of the factors. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the experimental data showed a high correlation coefficient R² (0.99) and a low root mean square error (2.84) …
Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan
Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan
Masters Theses
"As the computer and electronics industry moves towards higher data rates, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems always present challenges for designers for high-speed data communication systems. To characterize the entire link path between transmitters and receivers, accurate models for sources, passive link path (such as traces, vias, connectors, etc), and terminations should be built before simulations either in frequency or time domain. Due to the imperfection of model, data corrections are preferred before time-domain simulations to ensure stability. Moreover, data obtained from models should be compared with measurement results to judge the level of agreement for validations. This …
Time-Domain Thru-Reflect-Line (Trl) Calibration Error Assessment And Its Mitigation And Modeling Of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb) With Complex Area Fills, Vysakh Sivarajan
Masters Theses
"Part 1 for this thesis is on the error assessment of a time-domain (t-TRL) calibration technique. Application of the "Thru-Reflect-Line" (TRL) calibration to time-domain measurements of S-parameters (t-TRL) can be used for the characterization of the printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, t-TRL calibrated results still have deviations from the reference frequency-domain vector network analyzer (VNA) calibrated results. There are two main sources of errors in the t-TRL calibration. They are random errors, such as an additive noise and jitter, and systematic errors associated with cables, connectors, and port mismatches. This work addresses these two types of errors by proper selection …
Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Disruption Of Store-Operated Calcium Entry In A Muscarinic Receptor Signaling Pathway, Hsiu-Jen Wang
Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Disruption Of Store-Operated Calcium Entry In A Muscarinic Receptor Signaling Pathway, Hsiu-Jen Wang
Masters Theses
"The influences of ZnO nanoparticles on cellular responses to activation of muscarinic receptors were studied in Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing the human M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. ZnO particles (20 nm) induced cytotoxicity in a time and concentration-dependent manner: following a 24 h exposure, toxicity was minimal at concentrations below 20 µg/ml but virtually complete at concentrations above 28 µg/ml. ZnO particles did not affect antagonist binding to M3 receptors or allosteric ligand effects, but increased agonist binding affinity while eliminating guanine nucleotide sensitivity. At a noncytotoxic concentration (10 µg/ml), ZnO increased resting [Ca²⁺]i from 40 to 130 nM without …
Determining The R Values For 12 Inch Deep Z-Purlins And Girts With Through-Fastened Panels Under Suction Loading, Kaye Dee Wibbenmeyer
Determining The R Values For 12 Inch Deep Z-Purlins And Girts With Through-Fastened Panels Under Suction Loading, Kaye Dee Wibbenmeyer
Masters Theses
"Designing purlins for roof systems attached to through-fastened panels has been a subject well researched in the past. The current design specification uses a simplified approach to the designing of these members where the fully braced moment capacity of such members is multiplied by a reduction factor, commonly referred to as the R-value. This value represents the point in between the fully braced and fully unbraced member behavior. However, the current AISI Specification, S100, only contains R-values for purlins and girts up to 11.5 inches in depth. Since manufacturers are now rolling sections up to 12 inches deep, two confirmatory …
Nonlinear Finite Element Formulation Of The Soil Structure Interaction Through Two Parameter Foundation Model, Taraka Ravi Shankar Mullapudi
Nonlinear Finite Element Formulation Of The Soil Structure Interaction Through Two Parameter Foundation Model, Taraka Ravi Shankar Mullapudi
Masters Theses
"The response of shallow and raft foundations is having a significant importance due to its complex behavior because of the semi-infinite soil media. Winkler's model is the simplest model to deal with the structure and soil. The Winkler model represents the foundation reaction as proportional to the soil displacement at a particular point, which results in the elasticity of the soil being the only parameter in consideration. But in reality the soil cohesiveness is having a significant contribution in soil structure interaction, and therefore the consideration of coupling effects of Winkler springs need to be accounted. Most of the existing …

A Numerical Investigation Of Flowfield Modification In High-Speed Airbreathing Inlets Using Energy Deposition, Matthew Flynn Rohweder
Masters Theses
"Energy deposition in front of dual-mode ram/scramjet engines is numerically investigated utilizing two-dimensional CFD for its potential to modify inlet/isolator flow-fields for engine start/unstart control and for its general potential for generating large-scale flow-field modification in such flows. A simplified (high Mach number) constant-area duct geometry is initially defined in order to test the feasibility of the concept; the results from this initial investigation demonstrates possible beneficial effects of depositing energy upstream of a thermally choked duct in terms of causing massive changes in flow patterns, including the reestablishment of supersonic flow throughout the duct. This study is followed by …

Fpga Implementation Of Pso Algorithm And Neural Networks, Parviz Palangpour
Masters Theses
"This thesis describes the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementations of two powerful techniques of Computational Intelligence (CI), the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) and the Neural Network (NN). Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a popular population-based optimization algorithm. While PSO has been shown to perform well in a large variety of problems, PSO is typically implemented in software. Population-based optimization algorithms such as PSO are well suited for execution in parallel stages. This allows PSO to be implemented directly in hardware and achieve much faster execution times than possible in software. In this thesis, a pipelined architecture for hardware …
Etherannotate: A Transparent Malware Analysis Tool For Integrating Dynamic And Static Examination, Joshua Michael Eads
Etherannotate: A Transparent Malware Analysis Tool For Integrating Dynamic And Static Examination, Joshua Michael Eads
Masters Theses
"Software security researchers commonly reverse engineer and analyze current malicious software (malware) to determine what the latest techniques malicious attackers are utilizing and how to protect computer systems from attack. The most common analysis methods involve examining how the program behaves during execution and interpreting its machine-level instructions. However, modern malicious applications use advanced anti-debugger, anti-virtualization, and code packing techniques to obfuscate the malware's true activities and divert security analysts. Malware analysts currently do not have a simple method for tracing malicious code activity at the instruction-level in a highly undetectable environment. There also lacks a simple method for combining …

Closed-Form Solutions To Discrete-Time Portfolio Optimization Problems, Mathias Christian Goggel
Masters Theses
"In this work, we study some discrete time portfolio optimization problems. After a brief introduction of the corresponding continuous time models, we introduce the discrete time financial market model. The change in asset prices is modeled in contrast to the continuous time market by stochastic difference equations. We provide solutions for these stochastic difference equations. Then we introduce the discrete time risk-measure and the portfolio optimization problems. We provide closed form solutions to the discrete time problems. The main contribution of this thesis are the closed form solutions to the discrete time portfolio models. For simulation purposes the discrete time …

Quantification Of Product Color Preference In A Utility Function, Hannah L. Turner
Masters Theses
"Currently, many marketing and engineering tools exist to help a designer optimize quantitative attributes of a product, such as height, weight, volume, or cost. However, these methods cannot effectively take into consideration aesthetic attributes of a product, or any other attributes for which there is no understood functional relationship between the attribute's potential values and the consumer's preference. This research has begun the work of developing this necessary functional relationship for the aesthetic attribute of color and has created a methodology for further research. To do this, colors were represented by their red, green, and blue light components, and preference …

Masters Theses
"Multi-input power electronic converters (MIPEC) are increasingly gaining interest in the fields of renewable energy systems and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). The main advantage of MIPECs is their ability to interface several energy sources and storage devices using a single power conversion stage. Therefore, they provide simpler control and smaller parts count. In this thesis, various aspects of the utilization of double-input (DI) converters in solar and HEV applications are explored. For instance, a DI buckboost topology is proposed for a photovoltaic (PV)/battery energy system. The converter is controlled in a way that maximum power is drawn from the PV …
Signal Analysis For Multiple Target Materials Through Wavelet Transforms, Rajat Pashine
Signal Analysis For Multiple Target Materials Through Wavelet Transforms, Rajat Pashine
Masters Theses
"Signal identification based on different sensing systems like microwaves, infra-red, x-rays and terahertz waves is one of the classic problems in signal processing. Earlier methods had relied mainly on the amplitude spectrum obtained by these sensing techniques mainly due to non-availability of the phase information for the signals. Most of them are based on techniques like absorbance spectrum that requires a reference material's signal for the test material's identification. They are also sensitive to noise and highly dependent on the peak detection algorithms. Modern equipments with both amplitude and phase information provide an opportunity for time-domain signal based methods that …
Implementing Frequency Regulation Capability In A Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, Venkata Ajay Kumar Pappu
Implementing Frequency Regulation Capability In A Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, Venkata Ajay Kumar Pappu
Masters Theses
"Photovoltaic power plants pose some challenges when integrated with the power grid. Today's PV plants focus on extracting the maximum power from the arrays. This makes the PV system unavailable for helping in regulating the grid frequency as compared to conventional synchronous generators. A new technique for tracking a pseudo-maximum power point for creating power reserve is presented. This will help provide fast response in injecting power to respond to rapid load changes in a manner analogous to the inertia of a rotating machine. This helps in contributing toward frequency regulation. This thesis examines the implementation of a two stage …

Zinc Iron Phosphate Glasses For Enameling Applications, Sagnik Saha
Masters Theses
"New compositions of low temperature black glasses were developed that are suitable as frits for enameling soda-lime silicate (S-L-S) glass substrates. Zinc iron phosphate glasses are of interest for this application because they possess dilatometric low softening points (under 600ºC) and have coefficients of thermal expansion that are compatible with S-L-S glass (in the range 90-110x10⁻⁷/ºC). The development of compositions with excellent chemical durability, particularly in acidic conditions, is also desired. Compositional modification were made to the (Na₂O+K₂O)·ZnO·MnO·Fe₂O₃·P₂O₅ glass system using design of experiments. The compositional boundaries used in the design were based on earlier work at Missouri S&T. The …
Minimize End-To-End Delay Through Cross-Layer Optimization In Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Networks, Yibo Xu
Minimize End-To-End Delay Through Cross-Layer Optimization In Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Networks, Yibo Xu
Masters Theses
"End-to-end delay plays a very important role in wireless sensor networks. It refers to the total time taken for a single packet to be transmitted across a network from source to destination. There are many factors could affect the end-to-end delay, among them the routing path and the interference level along the path are the two basic elements that could have significant influence on the result of the end-to-end delay. This thesis presents a transmission scheduling scheme that minimizes the end-to-end delay when the node topology is given. The transmission scheduling scheme is designed based on integer linear programming and …

The daily widespread use of lead has dramatically increased the degree and longevity of its exposure to humans, exacerbating the task of lead poisoning treatment. Lead exerts adverse effects on cardiovascular, central nervous, renal, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems. The common treatment for lead poisoning is chelation therapy. Chelators were proposed to treat lead poisoning a very long time ago. However, chelators have severe side effects that could cause more problems, in addition to lead poisoning. Therefore, another group of drugs has been suggested --- antioxidants. This type of …
Explosives Recognition And Awareness Training: A Psychological Approach To Pre-Blast Mitigation, James Wade Hawkins
Explosives Recognition And Awareness Training: A Psychological Approach To Pre-Blast Mitigation, James Wade Hawkins
Masters Theses
"The nation's security strategy tends to be reactionary to a specific event. It is rare when established policies have proven successful, even though there is substantial financial and resource investment. The payoff is measured by analyzing the desired minimal effect rather than prevention of the event altogether. Such is the case in combating explosives-related threats. Today, research and development, science and technology, are plugged as the saviors of a post-blast event. Synthetic and composite materials are used to strengthen barriers and cutting-edge technology is utilized to refine the latest in standoff detection. These legitimate measures provide a sense of security …
