Signal-To-Noise Ratio Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices Across Educational Settings, Hope Elizabeth Lorenz
Signal-To-Noise Ratio Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices Across Educational Settings, Hope Elizabeth Lorenz
Masters Theses
The use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices is important for individuals whose natural speech is inadequate for communication. Research conducted to make improvements to AAC devices has included exploring the effectiveness of color-coding symbols, linguistically based arrangement of symbols, and intelligibility of the devices. However, little attention has been given to the volume adequacy of AAC devices in a variety of educational settings. It is hypothesized that volume levels of AAC devices are often inappropriate for adequate communication when compared to noise levels in the classroom. The present study measured the volume output level of AAC devices compared …

"I Am Not Minor": Characters' Apparent Autonomy In J.M. Coetzee's Fiction, Brigid Erin O'Malley
"I Am Not Minor": Characters' Apparent Autonomy In J.M. Coetzee's Fiction, Brigid Erin O'Malley
Masters Theses
J.M. Coetzee's most recent works of fiction have become increasingly experimental with form (e.g., metafiction, diary, fictionalized memoir). These various forms illuminate the subject-object split present in Coetzee's recent work and its transcendence of race and gender. Indeed, the gender and racial tensions present in his novels seem to be mere representations of the subject-object split at work - the split that exists between those with power and those without. Thus, I believe Coetzee is attempting to make a more universal, even spiritual statement regarding the body and soul ( our corporeal selves representing the objective self and our soul …
Social Identity Theory In Campus Recreation: Examining Organizational And Exercise Identification Among Recreation Center Users, Kiel Emberton
Social Identity Theory In Campus Recreation: Examining Organizational And Exercise Identification Among Recreation Center Users, Kiel Emberton
Masters Theses
Social identity theory is often used in commercial settings to provide a basis for psychographic market segmentation. This usage has led to the development of organization identification in traditional business settings. Campus recreation is unique in that the primary product of consumption is exercise. In describing exercise behavior, social identity theory has been applied to explain the unique psychological attachments exercisers have to their exercise behavior. This application of social identity theory created the exercise identity construct. The purpose of this study was to examine social identity theory in campus recreation. Specifically, this study investigated the correlation between frequency of …

Bridging The Cultural Gap: Using Commonwealth Young Adult Literature In American Secondary Schools, Jennifer Hrejsa-Hudson
Masters Theses
Commonwealth Young Adult Literature (CYAL), or Y AL written in English speaking countries other than America, can help American secondary students become more globally aware while fulfilling many of the Common Core Standards. CY AL offers a variety of literary and multicultural/intercultural opportunities not always available in Ameri-centric YA. In this thesis, prize winning examples of CY AL and intercultural CY AL are analyzed for what cultural knowledge students can gain from reading them. Also included is a discussion about what is lost when American publishers "translate" CYAL into American vernacular. Finally, specific examples are given of how American secondary …

Advocacy Coalitions In Iowa And Illinois: Examining Same-Sex Policy Subsystems, Heather (Aiden) Ethington
Advocacy Coalitions In Iowa And Illinois: Examining Same-Sex Policy Subsystems, Heather (Aiden) Ethington
Masters Theses
Literature on LGBT politics and rights has been limited. at best. Little information exists as to how coalitions form and build on successes and failures. Seeking to expand the body of research. this study examined the interest group coalitions active on either side of the highly divisive issue of same-sex marriage. Through a comparative case study, the research showed that at the subnational level many issues affect coalition success, including political culture, divisiveness, and in what arena policy change is occurring. Unsurprisingly, the study shows that perturbations in the subsystem led to the greatest response from coalitions, which led to …

Ruthenium Polypyridyl Complexes That Utilize Azo-Dyes To Enhance Absorption Of Visible Photons, Akram Hazeen
Masters Theses
Research in the field of dye sensitized solar cells has been growing rapidly. The challenge in this field is to prepare molecules that absorb in the visible region. An azo dye ligand based on l,0-phenanthroline, "phen-azo-phenol", was prepared and found to absorb at 380 nm in MeOH. UV-Vis spectra of this ligand were recorded in different solvents and in the presence of added acid or base and it appeared that the spectra were shifted to longer wavelength (around 500 nm) in the presence of base and/or basic solvents. This was attributed to deprotonation of the phenol portion of the ligand. …

International Image Repair: Integrating Culture Into Image Repair Discourse, Nicole Mangiaracina
International Image Repair: Integrating Culture Into Image Repair Discourse, Nicole Mangiaracina
Masters Theses
An organization's image and reputation rely heavily on how it interacts with its stakeholders. With an increase in globalization, more organizations are conducting business internationally with diverse stakeholders. When an organization faces a crisis, it must design specific messages that meet the needs of its stakeholders and the public. Image Repair Theory not only provides strategies for crisis communicators when crafting messages, but it also provides guidelines to critically evaluate those messages. Most crisis communication research, including Image Repair Theory, does not address cultural differences. The ways in which a culture perceives, understands, and communicates about crises and image repair …
Utilization Of Phosphorus Ylides Towards The Synthesis Of Extended Cinnamaldehydes And Stellettins, John M. Saathoff
Utilization Of Phosphorus Ylides Towards The Synthesis Of Extended Cinnamaldehydes And Stellettins, John M. Saathoff
Masters Theses
Phosphorus ylides have been utilized in three synthetic approaches; two involving the synthesis of photochromic cinnamaldehyde semicarbazones and a final scheme towards the synthesis of the isomalabaricane natural products. The targeted cinnamaldehyde semicarbazones varied both in the length of the conjugated system as well as the position and type of phenyl ring substituents, because these variations could impact their degree of photochromicity. The three step synthesis of the extended cinnamaldehyde semicarbazones involved a Wittig condensation, hydrolysis of acetal protecting group, and formation of imine and was completed in respectable cumulative yields; 42.4% yield for semicarbazones with n = 1 double …

Overt And Relational Aggression In A Camp Setting: Links To Cognition, Emotion, And Behavior, Chelsea M. Fuelling
Overt And Relational Aggression In A Camp Setting: Links To Cognition, Emotion, And Behavior, Chelsea M. Fuelling
Masters Theses
Research examining relational and overt forms of aggression and socialpsychological adjustment in childhood has greatly increased over the last decade. Studies have shown that children view both relationally manipulative behaviors and physically harmful behaviors as "aggressive". Children's beliefs about the legitimacy of aggression (i.e., cognitions) and emotions are related to overt aggression. However, few studies in this area have examined both types of aggression ( overt and relational). This study examined the relationship between childhood aggression and children's cognitions, emotions, and behaviors, in a day camp setting. Results demonstrated that all three domains were related to overt and relational aggression. …
Sleeping The Way To Success: Examining The Relationship Between Sleep And Academic Success Among College Students, Jennifer M. Hedges
Sleeping The Way To Success: Examining The Relationship Between Sleep And Academic Success Among College Students, Jennifer M. Hedges
Masters Theses
The negative effects of poor sleep habits have been widely studied, although there is little research focusing on the academic impact that poor sleep has among the college student population, where poor sleep seems to be prevalent. Research studies have consistently documented that sleep difficulties and daytime tiredness affect more than half of college students. Daytime naps, pulling "all-nighter" cram sessions, and late bedtimes and rise times are just a few of the common scenarios that deeply disturb the sleep quality and quantity of college students. The American Sleep Association (2007) has shown that sleep is necessary for survival in …

Understanding French Foreign Policy After The Second World War, Christophe D. Amegan
Understanding French Foreign Policy After The Second World War, Christophe D. Amegan
Masters Theses
This thesis is about providing a general understanding of French foreign policy since the end of the Second World War as suggested by the existing literature on soft power, military interventions, and the promotion of democracy. Even though France came out of the war very weakened, the country over the years has found ways to remain influential on the international scene. France's preference for diplomacy, its reliance on an international institution such as Francophonie, its readiness to intervene militarily when needed, and its support to the promotion of democracy internationally, have all work to preserve France's standing as a middle …
Polarization In Congressional Committees, Andrew Age
Polarization In Congressional Committees, Andrew Age
Masters Theses
This thesis analyzes whether polarization is occurring in congressional committees, both the House of Representatives and the Senate standing committees, from 1970-2010. Sean Theirault's (2006) research of polarization on the floor of Congress is the foundation for identifying similar results in the standing committees. In addition, committees will be separated into three different types: regional, national, and power. These types are based on previous categorizing strategies by Glenn Parker and Suzanne Parker (1979), Keith Krebhiel (1990), Garry Young and Valerie Heitshusen (2003), and Gary Cox and Matthew McCubbins (2007). The separation of committees is to find if some committees polarize …

Simultaneous Electrochemical Determination Of Tryptamine And Barbituric Acid, Luxshani Thangarajah
Masters Theses
The ability to analyze mixtures of two or more red-ox active components "on-the-spot" without the need to carry the sample into a laboratory is typically limited by the fact that various components need to be separated before they can be quantified. Reducing the two-step protocol (separation and detection) to a single one (detection) would markedly shorten the analysis time and simplify the analysis.

Experiences Of Lesbian Women In Social Sororities At Mid-Sized Public Institutions: A Qualitative Study, Kate S. Solberg
Masters Theses
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the experiences of lesbian identified women in social sororities at medium sized public universities in the Midwest. Experiences and perceptions of three women were investigated in a phenomenological study to discover the influence of their sexual orientation on their lives as sorority women. Their responses indicated that while their experiences of being out lesbian women in their chapters had been largely positive, there is still a culture of heteronormativity fighting against full acceptance of diverse sexual orientations in the fraternity and sorority community.
