A Climatological Study Of Drought In Southern Michigan, Rudy Bartels Apr 2014

A Climatological Study Of Drought In Southern Michigan, Rudy Bartels

Masters Theses

Drought has become a reoccurring phenomenon throughout many regions around the world. Significant drought conditions have beenobserved overthe pastfive decades in relation to economic, social, and agricultural impacts. In this study, Southern Michigan is investigated over the past 52 years from 1960-2012. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) will be calculated over a 6-month timescale from monthly precipitations. Three variables including 500-mb heights, surface pressure maps, and sea surface temperatures, will be correlated with the SPI using sliding correlations and Pearson's R correlation to determine any relations between these variables and precipitation variations. We will further investigate the five driest, wettest, …

Vaccinia Virus Flll Mediated Expedition Of Tanapoxvirus Replication In Cell Culture, Yih Wen Goh Apr 2014

Vaccinia Virus Flll Mediated Expedition Of Tanapoxvirus Replication In Cell Culture, Yih Wen Goh

Masters Theses

Tanapoxvirus (TPV) produces large but slow-forming plaques as opposed to vaccinia virus (VACV) that forms similar large plaques but more rapidly. A number of genes were identified in VACV, inclucding FllL, A33R, A34R and A36R that contribute to the regulation of virus release and dissemination, and are particularly responsible for the induction of actin tails. Among them, TPV lacks homologs of the FllL and A36R genes. F11Lmediated inhibition of RhoA-mDia signaling was shown to enhance the microtubules dynamics and modulates the cortical actin that assisted in the release of progeny virus from infected cells. To understand the possible effects of …

Managing Dispersed Recreation In The Allegheny National Forest, Anne Santa Maria Apr 2014

Managing Dispersed Recreation In The Allegheny National Forest, Anne Santa Maria

Masters Theses

In the Allegheny National Forest, an unregulated dispersed camping policy has led to significant impacts to the natural environment. This study used data gathered from visitor surveys, interviews with managers, and environmental conditions of campsites to recommend management actions for campsites along seven roads in the National Forest. The seven road areas fell into two categories. Primitive recreation was more common in some areas and solitude was more highly valued by campers. Other areas had more frequent visitor use, motorized camping, and solitude was less important to campers. These factors influenced management recommendations, which include designing and constructing campsites to …

Design Of Hardware Accelerator For Fuzzy Automata Using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration, Chinh K. Nguyen Apr 2014

Design Of Hardware Accelerator For Fuzzy Automata Using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration, Chinh K. Nguyen

Masters Theses

As embedded systems have become more complex and designers are required to develop new products faster while using fewer chips. FPGAs are a good choice because they offer flexibility to design on-chip devices as well as the embedded systems that are reprogrammable and reconfigurable. Today's tougher cost, higher performance, and lower power consumption requirements demand even more efficient design strategies. Dynamic partial reconfiguration (PR) is a good approach to meet these requirements because it extends the inherent flexibility of the FPGA by allowing partial regions of the FPGA to be dynamically reconfigured with new functionality while other applications are still …

Unreconciled Contradictions: Autonomy, Ideology, And The Possibility Of Progress In Tillie Olsen's "Tell Me A Riddle", Rachel Leigh Curtis Apr 2014

Unreconciled Contradictions: Autonomy, Ideology, And The Possibility Of Progress In Tillie Olsen's "Tell Me A Riddle", Rachel Leigh Curtis

Masters Theses

Tillie Olsen's most piercing and poignant text, "Tell Me a Riddle," depicts inescapable circumstances as thwarting all avenues of meaningful pursuit for Eva, its aging protagonist. Throughout her work and philosophy, Olsen continually emphasized the power of external constraints, and in this lies her powerful legacy. Her texts outline tragic realities, drawing attention to those on the fringe of society. Regardless of successes and opportunities, she considered herself similarly stifled and downtrodden. In "Tell Me a Riddle," she framed Eva's plight in a way that resembles her own perception of herself, but despite her identification with Eva, her situation differed …

The major goal of this study was to investigate a microglial response following deafferentation in the adult zebrafish, Danio rerio, olfactory bulb. Microglia were identified in the olfactory bulb using the 4c4 antibody and phagocytic-dependent labeling (DiA). Microglia responded to both methods of deafferentation namely, permanent (cautery) and temporary (Triton X- 100). On one and three days following both permanent and temporary deafferentation there was a significant increase in microglia in the treated olfactory bulb. At five and seven days after permanent and temporary deafferentation there was no longer a significant difference between the treated and untreated olfactory bulbs, …

Analytical Performance Evaluation Of Thermoelectric Modules Using Effective Material Properties, Sean Lwe Leslie Weera Apr 2014

Analytical Performance Evaluation Of Thermoelectric Modules Using Effective Material Properties, Sean Lwe Leslie Weera

Masters Theses

Designers often face the predicament of non-standardized forms of performance data provided by thermoelectric module manufacturers. Other than experimental means the only method to evaluate the performance of a product would be through analytical modeling using material properties that are usually undisclosed and unknown. This work studies the theoretical approach of obtaining such material properties using the maximum operating parameters reported by the manufacturers. These values are then analytically employed to evaluate the performances of these thermoelectric modules. Experimental means are also devised and carried out on these test samples to validate the integrity of the results. Three-way comparisons between …

Understanding Work Socialization: A Qualitative Study Of A Youth Employment Program, Katelyn S. Sandor Apr 2014

Understanding Work Socialization: A Qualitative Study Of A Youth Employment Program, Katelyn S. Sandor

Masters Theses

Through early work experiences, often in part-time jobs, young people come to learn about the working world. This learning process is often considered a source of anticipatory socialization, or an experience that comes before real work and serves to socialize individuals into particular organizations and vocations. In contrast, this study seeks to understand how individuals are socialized into broader meanings of work through early, part-time work experiences by studying a Youth Employment Program (YEP) aimed at providing hands-on job opportunities for at-risk youth. Drawing upon in-depth interviews, I analyze what young people learned about work and how such learning occurred. …

Transport And Catabolism Of Inositol Isomers In Sinorhizobium Meliloti, Ee Leng Choong

Masters Theses

The nitrogen fixing symbiont of alfalfa, Sinorhizobium meliloti, is able to use inositols as the sole carbon source. In this thesis, the role of two genetic loci in S. meliloti was investigated; the first is involved in the transport of inositols and the second genetic locus is essential for the catabolism of D-chiro-inositol stereoisomers. The S. meliloti ibpA gene had been earlier described as playing a role in inositol transport, but this study identified the SMb20072 gene product, called IbpB, as a second periplasmic binding protein involved in inositol transport. A single ibpB mutant and a double …

Delayed Match-To-Sample In Preschool Children, Thomas Ratkos Apr 2014

Delayed Match-To-Sample In Preschool Children, Thomas Ratkos

Masters Theses

In delayed match-to-sample (DMTS) tasks, a sample stimulus is shown and then removed for some period of time before comparison stimuli are presented. Joint control theory (Lowenkron, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1998, 2006) explains correct selections on delayed match-to-sample tasks in terms of the joint control of behavior by the comparison stimulus and a repeated word or words originating from the sample stimulus. Eight children ages 3 to 6 were exposed to a DMTS task with visual stimuli using a 15s delay. During training, children were taught to name the stimulus cards and then repeat the name of the target stimulus …

A Quantitative Tool For Identifying The Epileptogenic Zone Using Network Connectivity Analysis, James Michael Gurisko Apr 2014

A Quantitative Tool For Identifying The Epileptogenic Zone Using Network Connectivity Analysis, James Michael Gurisko

Masters Theses

Approximately one-third of patients diagnosed with focal epilepsy do not respond to medication and may be candidates for surgery to remove epileptogenic tissue known as the epileptogenic zone. A detailed pre-surgical evaluation is required and often includes invasive video electroencephalographic monitoring (IVEM) using intracranial surface and depth electrodes, and a camera. The resulting large pools of electrocorticorticographic (ECoG) data are manually analyzed by an expert epileptologist to determine epileptic events. The process is time consuming and prone to human error. This thesis investigates the use of measures to identify the causal relationship between ECoG signals during propagation of a seizure …

Comparing Methods For Full Body Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of A Standing Long Jump, Nathaniel Vlietstra Apr 2014

Comparing Methods For Full Body Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of A Standing Long Jump, Nathaniel Vlietstra

Masters Theses

The classic iterative Newton-Euler method for inverse dynamics applied to calculating net joint torques in biomechanics analysis has a number of drawbacks. Many sources of error including imprecision in video motion capture data measurements can lead to significant errors in calculated net joint torques. Adding ground reaction force data overconstrains the solution. This study examined the effectiveness of various inverse dynamics analysis methods on a full body analysis of the standing long jump motion. These methods included variations in which equations for segments from the linksegment model were removed to relieve over constraint. Also considered were analysis methods applying least …

Low Noise Nmos Imager Fabrication With A Study On The Effect Of Photodiode Shape On Dark Current, Steven Taylor

Masters Theses

The purpose of this project was to fabricate a low noise N-type Metal-Oxide- Semiconductor (NMOS) imager in the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Cleanroom with a focus on reducing pixel dark current. Previous research suggests Photodiode (PD) shape affects dark current and charge transfer characteristics of the pixel. Five PD shapes were designed to determine an optimized pixel shape with respect to dark performance. PN junction PDs with the Three Transistor (3T) pixel architecture were found to be the most suitable for imager fabrication in the GVSU cleanroom. The integrated circuit layout of several 8x8 pixel arrays was designed to …

Acute Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Alters Vascular Reactivity Independent Of Atp, William Cole Waggener Iv Apr 2014

Acute Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Alters Vascular Reactivity Independent Of Atp, William Cole Waggener Iv

Masters Theses

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO), breathing 100 percent oxygen at greater than one atmosphere, has been prescribed for many different medical reasons. The mechanism for HBO, however, is not entirely understood. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the main energy carrier molecule in the body and its production requires oxygen. By increasing the amount of oxygen carried by the blood, the amount of ATP could also increase. This possible mechanism for HBO was tested using the addition of exogenous ATP on approximately five millimeter wide rings of fresh porcine gut arteries. The vascular rings were attached to a force transducer which measured the …

A Southerner For The Union: Major General George Henry Thomas - A Brief Biographical Sketch And Analysis Of The Causes And Effects Of His Decision For The North, Miranda Becker

Masters Theses

The American Civil War was a conflict that set a country against itself, making enemies out of friends, severing familial bonds, and leaving a legacy that is evident to this day. There is no better illustration of this conflict than the life of Union Major General George Henry Thomas of the Western theater in Tennessee. When the Southern states seceded, each citizen had an important decision to make whether to side with the Union or the Confederacy. For some it seemed an easy conclusion, whether it meant staying loyal to their state or because they believed in the cause of …

Electron Capture By Multiply Charged Ions From Molecular Targets, Justin Harris Apr 2014

Electron Capture By Multiply Charged Ions From Molecular Targets, Justin Harris

Masters Theses

State-selective differential cross sections for single-electron capture processes in collisions of Neq+ (q=2, 3, 5) ions with H2O and CO2 have been studied experimentally at laboratory collisions energies between 45 and 250 eV, and at scattering angles between 0o and 7:20o by means of translational energy-gain spectroscopy technique. The translational energy spectra show that only a few final states are populated depending on the projectile's charge state, laboratory scattering angle, and the collision energy. In addition, these measurements show that the dominant reaction channels are due to non-dissociative electron capture into excited states of …

Impersonal Trust In Versus Dependence On Fda, Amanda C. Meyer Apr 2014

Impersonal Trust In Versus Dependence On Fda, Amanda C. Meyer

Masters Theses

This study emerged following an examination of the work by Susan Shapiro (1987) delineating the construct of impersonal trust, and Shapiro's analysis of trust was applied to an understanding of the impersonal trust relationship which Americans have with Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Few fields outside of organizational studies have undertaken efforts to operationalize impersonal trust and to distinguish it from other related constructs, so this exploratory study assessed whether variables associated with interpersonal trust as outlined by Meyer and Ward (2009) were also associated with impersonal trust in FDA. This study further examined whether measures of impersonal trust could …

The Relationship Between Speaking Rate And Nasalance In Typical Adult Speakers, Rachel Whitney Apr 2014

The Relationship Between Speaking Rate And Nasalance In Typical Adult Speakers, Rachel Whitney

Masters Theses

Nasometry is a non-invasive tool frequently used to measure speech resonance in clinical populations. The instrument uses an acoustic recording system to derive a measure termed nasalance, which is an estimate of the relative amount of acoustic energy emitted from the nasal cavity. Nasometry protocols do not provide detailed instructions for speaking rate control during data collection. Studies attempting to establish a relationship between speaking rate and nasalance have yielded mixed results; therefore, it is important to identify the influence of speaking rate on nasalance in a variety of speaking tasks. If rate is found to influence nasalance values, protocols …
