Geology And Mineralization Of The Minerva Mine No. 1, Hardin County, Illinois, Matthew Peter Nackowski Jan 1949

Geology And Mineralization Of The Minerva Mine No. 1, Hardin County, Illinois, Matthew Peter Nackowski

Masters Theses

"This study originally was undertaken to describe the witherite identified in specimens collected at the Minerva Oil Company Mine No. 1, Hardin County, Illinois. The original specimens of witherite were collected on October 25, 1948, by Charles E. Tothill, while on a senior trip through the fluorspar mine. The witherite was identified by Dr. O. R. Grawe, Chairman of the Geology Department, Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, to whom the specimens were presented. Dr. Grawe suggested that the writer visit the southern Illinois fluorspar area to determine the occurrence and distribution of the witherite. This mineral had been described …

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece Jan 1949

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece

Masters Theses

"For some time there has been a need for a wind tunnel at the School of Mines for experimental work in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments. With the expanding program and the possibility of establishing an Aeronautical Engineering School here, the need will be even more pronounced. So the problem will be of definite practical value. It was the original idea to design a small tunnel, build the tunnel, and to run a series of smoke tests on various structural models. However, after discussing the possibility of such a problem with school authorities, it was decided that if a …

Wetting Properties Of Enamel Glasses And Relation To Adherence, Chandrakant Chhotalal Shah Jan 1949

Wetting Properties Of Enamel Glasses And Relation To Adherence, Chandrakant Chhotalal Shah

Masters Theses

"Various investigators have tried to find the cause of adherence of enamel glasses to iron metal and they have put forward different theories to explain this phenomena of adherence. In spite of much work done on adherence, no theory has generally been accepted to explain the function of adhering oxides like cobalt, nickel or manganese, etc., in sheet iron ground coats. In this investigation it was thought to find out whether adherence promoting oxides have any effect on the wetting abilities of enamel glasses at elevated temperatures or not, and further, whether this different wettability caused by the different adherence …

Water Injection In The Modern Automotive Spark Ignition Engine, Leonard Carl Nelson Jan 1949

Water Injection In The Modern Automotive Spark Ignition Engine, Leonard Carl Nelson

Masters Theses

"The injection of water in the spark ignition engine is not new. The effect of humidity in the air on the performance of the spark ignition engine probably initiated the early investigations. The water vapor in the inlet air decreases the speed of the flame front and necessitates spark advance to assure maximum power and maximum efficiency. Water particles in the air evaporate during the compression and combustion of the inducted charge and decrease the tendency of the engine to detonate. These effects are very evident when operating the spark ignition engine in a moist atmosphere. Water is not a …

Effect Of Titanium Dioxide As A Mineralizer In Silica Brick, Henry Clay Brassfield Jan 1949

Effect Of Titanium Dioxide As A Mineralizer In Silica Brick, Henry Clay Brassfield

Masters Theses

"The magnitude of the thermal expansion of silica brick and its inability to withstand rapid temperature changes gives rise to problems of considerable importance in the manufacture of silica brick. In firing the silica brick, mineralogical changes occur in the quartzite from which the brick is made, in which minerals of lower specific gravity are formed. This results in a permanent expansion of the brick. These mineralogical changes have been thoroughly studied and considerable information is known on the different forms of silica produced at the higher temperatures. If the conditions of firing are such that these changes have progressed …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis Jan 1949

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media. The relaxation method was first applied to two-dimensional problems by Christopherson and Southwell, who applied it to problems in stress analysis. It was later applied to steady-state heat conduction problems by H. W. Emmons and to steady-state flow of incompressible liquids by A. A. Zwierschowski. The solutions of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media is difficult for all but the simplest boundary conditions, and impractical for …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski Jan 1949

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems in rheology. The relaxation method was first introduced by R. V. Southwell who applied it to the problem of electrical conductivity. It was later used by M. W. Emmons to solve two-dimensional heat conduction problems. The steady-state flow of fluids through porous media can be difficult or impossible by the usual analytical methods even with rather simple boundary conditions. The relaxation method promises to provide an easier method of solution and to provide a means of solving …

An Investigation Of An Electronic Ignition System For Internal Combustion Engines, Richard David Wheat Jan 1949

An Investigation Of An Electronic Ignition System For Internal Combustion Engines, Richard David Wheat

Masters Theses

"Many types of electric ignition systems have been developed, used, and discarded in favor of systems less expensive and more adaptable to internal combustion engines, Two types which might be classified as high-tension, jump-spark systems are in common use today. These two systems are (1) Battery-coil ignition used mainly on automobiles, and (2) Magneto-ignition used extensively on aircraft engines. A considerable amount of work has been done to determine the extent to which the character and intensity of the electric spark affect the ignition process. This work has revealed that a certain minimum amount of energy is required from the …

The Electrolytic Recovery Of Silver From Waste Silver Residues, Bailey Warren Hagar Jan 1949

The Electrolytic Recovery Of Silver From Waste Silver Residues, Bailey Warren Hagar

Masters Theses

"A considerable amount of silver is contained in the silver chloride-silver thiocyanate residue resulting from the use of silver nitrate and potassium thiocyanate by students of quantitative analysis in the volumetric determination of chlorine. The main objective of work described in this paper, therefore, was to find a simple and efficient method for recovering the silver from this silver chloride-silver thiocyanate residue...it was hoped that the experimentation described in this paper might also result in the design of inexpensive equipment which might be used by the small photographic shop"--Introduction, page 1-2.

Plateau Characteristics Of Geiger Counters With Respect To Different Gas Mixtures And Pressures, Ralph E. Lee Jan 1949

Plateau Characteristics Of Geiger Counters With Respect To Different Gas Mixtures And Pressures, Ralph E. Lee

Masters Theses

"The section of a Geiger Counter is characterized by the so-called plateau curve. In this curve the counting rate of a given counter is plotted as a function of voltage, when the gas which it contains and the radiation to which it is exposed are both kept the same. These curves are characterized by a rapid rise beyond the starting potential (potential at which the counter begins to respond) until a more or less flat region is reached. This flat region is called the plateau of the curve. The slope and width of the plateau curve are dependent upon the …

Torque Characteristics Of High Speed Steel Twist Drills, Tien Chi Lee Jan 1949

Torque Characteristics Of High Speed Steel Twist Drills, Tien Chi Lee

Masters Theses

"The drill is the most efficient tool used by machinists, for in no other tool is the cutting surface as large in proportion to the cross sectional area of the body or part that is its real support. Drills have shared evolutionary developments from carbon steels to high speed steels and from flat to twist drills. Many investigations have been made on the twist drills, but due to the majority of their work being based on the size of drills from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches or larger, there is a dearth of published data on the general problem of drills …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Copper Equilibrium System, August Robert Savu Jan 1949

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Copper Equilibrium System, August Robert Savu

Masters Theses

"The element titanium has a high degree of chemical activity at room temperature when in a finely divided condition. In the massive state this activity is only exhibited at high temperatures. The powdered metal is highly pyrophoric. Titanium forms quite stable sulphides and carbides, although these are subject to oxidation at high temperatures. It also form nitrides. Titanium being a transitional element forms hydrides with hydrogen which are stable at ordinary temperatures, but which dissociate at red heat liberating the hydrogen and leaving the metallic titanium in a very active state. Alloys are formed with such metals as aluminum, manganese, …

The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield Jan 1949

The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield

Masters Theses

"The problem to be investigated in this thesis is that of periodic heat flow in a semi-infinite solid. Periodic flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid is one which is bounded by one and only one plane. This subject has received considerable attention in the field of soil temperatures, both at the surface of the earth and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to temperature changes which are nearly periodic. These temperature changes take place both daily and annually. A knowledge of these …

Efficiency Of Various Types Of Reinforcement In Controlling Opening Of Cracks In Concrete Pavements, Frederick Richard Heartz Jan 1949

Efficiency Of Various Types Of Reinforcement In Controlling Opening Of Cracks In Concrete Pavements, Frederick Richard Heartz

Masters Theses

"To date very little work has been done on the subject of the amount of crack opening for different loads on concrete pavement. It is a known fact that these cracks must be held together sufficiently to have aggregate interlocking action if the pavement is to transfer loads from one edge of a crack to the other. The maximum permissable [sic] opening has been set at .027 inches by the Highway Research Board. The author has attempted in this investigations (1) to determine the effect of different spacing and different sizes of longitudinal and transverse wires in controlling crack opening …

The Lithium Tungsten Bronzes, Shun Sheng Hsu Jan 1949

The Lithium Tungsten Bronzes, Shun Sheng Hsu

Masters Theses

"The 'tungsten bronzes are a series of anionic substitutional solid solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal metatungstates and tungstic oxide. They are neither alloys or intermetallic compounds, the term "tungsten bronzes" was adopted because of their remarkable metallic properties -- e.g., high electrical conductivity, metallic luster on the crystal, and high specific gravity. Also owing to their intense and vivid colors and chemical inactivity it was possible to use them in the paint industry as a substitute for the so-called "bronze powders", the latter term is applied to the finely divided metal powders, such as aluminum, copper, brass, and …

Investigation Of The Emulsifying Properties Of Iso-Electric Gelatin, Ellsworth Warren Hudgens Jan 1949

Investigation Of The Emulsifying Properties Of Iso-Electric Gelatin, Ellsworth Warren Hudgens

Masters Theses

"A considerable amount of work has been done on the use of gelatin as a stabilizer or as a protective colloid in emulsions, or in other colloidal systems. However, relatively little research has been published using gelatin solely as an emulsifying agent. With this in mind it was decided to investigate the emulsifying properties of iso-electric gelatin with water - oil systems. The term oil, as used, refers to any liquid immiscible with water. It has long been known that gelatin would form dual type of emulsions with certain "oils" by varying the phase volume ratio of the two liquids. …

Design And Construction Of An Electronic Gain-Phase Meter, Gabriel G. Skitek Jan 1949

Design And Construction Of An Electronic Gain-Phase Meter, Gabriel G. Skitek

Masters Theses

"There are many communication and electronic circuits, such as filters, phase-shifting networks, matching networks, voltage amplifiers with and without feedback, whose proper usage with associated equipment depends upon the knowledge of the variation with frequency of the voltage ratio and phase angle between the output and input sinusoidal voltages or currents...It is the purpose of this thesis to design and build an electronic instrument that will measure the voltage gain and phase angle between two sinusoidal voltages or current of communication circuits, in such a manner as to aid the student in visualizing how these quantities vary with frequency, and …

Treatment Of Zinc Crusts By Vacuum Distillation, Chang-Hsu Shih Jan 1949

Treatment Of Zinc Crusts By Vacuum Distillation, Chang-Hsu Shih

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research is to investigate the possibility of obtaining reasonably pure silver from the zinc crusts by vacuum distillation in one step. The effect of temperature, pressure, particle size, and time of distillation will be determined. The behavior of other constituents in the crusts are also to be studied"--Introduction, page 5.

X-Ray Investigations Of The Metal Deposits Resulting From The Electrochemical Displacement Process, Cheng Chih Fang Jan 1949

X-Ray Investigations Of The Metal Deposits Resulting From The Electrochemical Displacement Process, Cheng Chih Fang

Masters Theses

"The principle of electrochemical displacement has been well established in the science of chemistry and applied as a commercial process in some metallurgical processes, such as the cementation process and the immersion method of metal coatings. According to the EMF series of the metals, the upper, the more electronegative metal,* (*Here the term of 'electronegative' means the metal possessing high electrolytic solution pressure and going into the solution with the formation of positive ions. Some authors preferred to use 'electropositive' instead of 'electronegative', referring to the ions which are electropositive during dissolution.) will displace the lower, the more electropositive one, …

Analysis Of Cascade Of Four-Terminal Networks, Ernest Randolph Roehl Jan 1949

Analysis Of Cascade Of Four-Terminal Networks, Ernest Randolph Roehl

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to find analytic expressions for the voltage and current variations along a structure composed of a cascade of identical dissymmetrical four-terminal networks driven harmonically at the sending end and working into an impedance at the receiving end and an impedance that can be placed at any of the junctions along the cascade. The method of analysis that is applied is analogous to that used in solving the long-line problem. A transmission system usually consists of the line or cable itself plus numerous other links whose purpose it is to correct defects in the line …

A Study Of Cathode Drift Compensation In D-C Amplifiers, Joseph W. Rittenhouse Jan 1949

A Study Of Cathode Drift Compensation In D-C Amplifiers, Joseph W. Rittenhouse

Masters Theses

"The expression, cathode drift, has to do with the random variations in vacuum tube plate current which are attributable to similar variations in emission velocities of electrons leaving hot cathodes. The fact that these random current changes appear to result from spurious drifts in cathode potential, since all other electrode potentials are unrelated to them, give rise to the expression, cathode drift...The problem with which this paper is concerned is a study of some of the possibilities of compensating for cathode drift effects in a single amplifier stage. Specifically, this paper will: (A) present a detailed mathematical and graphical analysis …

Automatic Wheel Balancer For Automobile Wheel, Frederick Eugene Nevin Jan 1949

Automatic Wheel Balancer For Automobile Wheel, Frederick Eugene Nevin

Masters Theses

"Automobiles of today have been so constructed that greater speeds under safer conditions now exist. One of the improvements has been the low pressure tire. These tires carrying less pressure necessitates a casing of greater volume. This has created a tire of greater thickness in the axial direction but at the same time has decreased the diameter. Because of these innovations in present-day tires the author believes the wheel assembly (tire, tube, wheel, and brake drum) should be considered as a rotating cylinder not as a rotating disk. This being the case, the condition of dynamic unbalance is more critical. …

The Establishment And Analysis Of A Triangulation System For The Teaching Of Advanced Surveying, Philip Blaine Newlin Jan 1949

The Establishment And Analysis Of A Triangulation System For The Teaching Of Advanced Surveying, Philip Blaine Newlin

Masters Theses

"The first thought of establishing a triangulation system for the University of Arizona student work was conceived early in the fall of 1947, when the author first learned that he would be in charge of the advanced surveying field parties during the spring semester. These men were to be instructed in the accepted manner of conducting surveys of higher order. This would include the measuring of a base line of second or first order accuracy, the turning of horizontal angles with this same degree of accuracy, the determination of the azimuth of the lines by astronomical observations, the running of …

A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Tin In The Solid State, Charles Merton Rice Jan 1949

A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Tin In The Solid State, Charles Merton Rice

Masters Theses

"Many studies have been made on the surface tension of metals but almost exclusively in the liquid state. Information on metals in the solid state is needed in pure physics to test theories of cohesion and in physical metallurgy to explain sintering. The common approach to the problem of surface tension in the solid state is to hang a weight on a thin wire or leaf of metal and then heat this weighted sample to a temperature at which flow is appreciable. The shrinkage or stretch of the sample is then a measure of the surface tension. Of the recent …

Comparative Study Of The Collecting Property Of Naphthenic Acids With Oleic Acid As Applied To Calcite, Hematite, Barite, And Fluorspar, Siddhi Nath Mukherji Jan 1949

Comparative Study Of The Collecting Property Of Naphthenic Acids With Oleic Acid As Applied To Calcite, Hematite, Barite, And Fluorspar, Siddhi Nath Mukherji

Masters Theses

"The present investigation was undertaken to find out any comparable collecting property of some of the industrial naphthenic acids available in the market with that of commercial grade of oleic acid so that some information may be available in selecting naphthenic acids as flotation collectors. In the flotation industry, usefulness of oleic acid as non-metallic minerals collector is well established. On the other hand, the use of naphthenic acids as flotation collector has been reported only in few cases. Even in those cases, no attempt has been made to correlate their collecting properties with that of their physical and chemical …

The Investigation Of Color Modification As A Result Of Solid Solution, Bobby Lee Mornin Jan 1949

The Investigation Of Color Modification As A Result Of Solid Solution, Bobby Lee Mornin

Masters Theses

"To the ceramic industry, color has long been one of its chief problems, not only in reproducing colors in the many complex silicate structures but in the development of stains that are stable at high temperatures and that are economically feasible for mass production. At the present time a stable high temperature red or yellow would be very desirable. Solid solution has been employed in ceramics to modify and thereby provide ceramic materials of different physical characteristics. The limited data available with respect to such solid solution serves to indicate that perhaps this state may serve as an important means …

A Study Of The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Stanley Francis Johnsen Jan 1949

A Study Of The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Stanley Francis Johnsen

Masters Theses

"Since scrapers were first employed in underground mining work, numerous changes in scraper design have transpired until now there are several common types of scrapers in use in mines over the world. The proved models of scrapers have been developed over a period of more than fifty years. Although specific scrapers have been tested to determine the amount of power consumed, no literature could be found concerning the relative power consumption of the different types of scrapers when operated under identical conditions. Purpose of Problem - The purpose of this study is to determine the relative efficiency of different types …
