The need for heat transfer rates never thought of 25 years ago has been brought about by the advent of modern high-performance devices such as nuclear reactors and rocket motors. "A heat release of about 40,000 Btu/hr.cu.ft. is considered good practice in a modern boiler, but in a rocket or a nuclear reactor it may be 1,000,000,000 Btu/hr.cu.ft." "This investigation is the result of the author's specific interest in two phase systems. In the past, considerable work has been done investigating the alteration of eutectoid structures; however, eutectic structures have been neglected to a great extent. Tammann did some work on the subject in 1937 as did Brown and Guy in more recent times. In both of the above cases the eutectic structure was altered by cold working and subsequent heating of the alloy.

The thermal expansion of refractories is of particular importance in that it affects the thermal stability of the product. A high coefficient of thermal expansion leads to greater spalling and destruction of the bricks in use. "TiO is one of the intermediate phases in the titanium - oxygen system with a crystal structure of the sodium chloride type. The phase extends from about 22 to 29 weight or about 46 to 55 atomic percent oxygen. A comprehensive survey of the physical properties of the phase has been made in previous investigations (see review of literature), but only impure titanium was available at that time. Therefore, some revision of the measurements had to be made. Also, neither the thermal expansion coefficients nor the temperature at which the lattice constants were measured were reported.

"Present application of the subsurface combustion processes in the thermal recovery of petroleum afford favorable and opportune methods of providing greater recoveries from petroleum reservoirs. This study attempts to elucidate some of the parameters controlling the complex hydrocarbon oxidation for one such process. The experimental phase consisted of investigating the combustion behavior of eight nonexplosive and one explosive natural gas-air mixtures at low and intermediate pressures. The hydrocarbon was allowed to oxidize by self-ignition under controlled conditions within environments precluding a visible flame type reaction. Progress of the reaction was followed by measuring effluent oxygen content.

"It is generally agreed that the evolution of gas from oil within a reservoir is most closely approximated by the differential liberation process, while gas liberation in the flow string, surface separator, and stock tank is most nearly represented by flash liberation. To conform with this assumed physical behavior, appropriate application of both flash and differential liberation data in the computation of reservoir performance by material balance methods is indicated.

Justification of this research. This experiment was designed to test the prevalent opinion that poor speaking reduces comprehension. Typical of such opinions is the conclusion of Knower, Phillips, and Koeppel¹, who state:

"The comparative effectiveness of speaking and oral reading as methods of presenting material depends upon the quality of performance. Poor speaking seems to be the least effective method of presenting informative materials. There is a direct relationship between the quality of speaking performance and the amount of material recalled. Poor speakers produced least recall."

When stuttering behavior is viewed as a problem in learning, the phenomenon of adaptation frequently receives attention. A standard adaptation experiment consists of having the person who stutters re-read the same passage, or a passage of equal difficulty, a specified number of times. Under these conditions a relative reduction¹ in stuttering frequency usually occurs. Experimentalists and clinicians alike have long been puzzled as to why this decrement takes place, since stuttering is generally considered by many writers^2,3 as a self-reinforcing disorder; that is, stuttering produces more stuttering.

"Shrinkage is one of four phenomena that are considered as causing volume changes in concrete, the other three being creep, temperature change effects, and possible chemical disintegration. While all four are interrelated, the volume change due to loss of moisture is associated with the term shrinkage. Creep is the time-dependent change in volume resulting from external loads. A rise or fall of temperature will produce an expansion or contraction of concrete but also will affect the rate of shrinkage by increasing or decreasing the rate of moisture evaporation from the surface of the concrete.
