Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr. Jan 1959

Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr.

Masters Theses

"With the advent of field research in which radioactive isotopes are used as tracers for water injected in secondary-recovery operations, knowledge of the probable transit time between wells of an injected tracer, its concentration at detection points, and the resultant optimum injection concentration has become important. Both detection and, consequently, injection concentrations of radioactive tracers are at least in part functions of the loss of tracer for various reasons, flow characteristics between wells, the rate of decay of radioactive emission, and the sensitivity of the detection apparatus. A method, based on the characteristics of a homogeneous 5-spot system, has been …

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes Jan 1959

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of the rate of loading variable on the apparent shear strengths of joints bonded with some of the currently available metal-to-metal adhesives. The effects of this variable are sometimes neglected by testing laboratories. The results of an experimental evaluation of the mechanical behavior of a group on modern metal-to-metal adhesives as a function of the rate of load application are used to more accurately establish the importance of rate of load considerations in adhesive joint testing. An attempt is made to explain observations of other investigators engaged in adhesive joint …

Geology Of The Northeast Portion Of Des Arc Quadrangle, Iron And Madison Counties, Missouri, Wesley Dean Weixelman Jan 1959

Geology Of The Northeast Portion Of Des Arc Quadrangle, Iron And Madison Counties, Missouri, Wesley Dean Weixelman

Masters Theses

"A geological investigation of the northeast portion of Des Arc Quadrangle in southeast Missouri was completed during the summer of 1958. Exposed Precambrian rocks include, from oldest to youngest, undifferentiated purple rhyolites with an interlayered tile-red rhyolite, andesine basalts with interlayered tuff, and an andesite. A diabase dike intrudes the lower purple rhyolites. The purple rhyolites account for about ninety-seven percent of the Precambrian exposures. Exposed Paleozoic rocks belong to the Bonneterre formation and include three members: (1) Lower Brown dolomite; (2) Light Gray dolomite with Tom Sauk limestone and arkosic sandstone and conglomerate facies; and (3) Upper Brown dolomite. …

Geology Of The Copper Deposits In The Eminence Region, Shannon County, Missouri, Lanny Lee Evans Jan 1959

Geology Of The Copper Deposits In The Eminence Region, Shannon County, Missouri, Lanny Lee Evans

Masters Theses

"Copper has been known to occur in Shannon County, Missouri since the early 1830's. A number of small deposits in an area around Eminence has been worked intermittently up to the present day. Little detailed geologic information is available on these deposits. The geology of the Eminence region consists of Precambrian rhyolite porphyry knobs projecting through dolomites and sandstones of Upper Cambrian and Ordovician age. A conglomerate of limited horizontal extent overlying the Precambrian is found at certain localities within the region. The only structures noted are the structural highs formed where the Paleozoic sediments lap upon the knobs. The …

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson Jan 1959

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson

Masters Theses

"The Vierendeel Truss, or Rigid Frame Truss, was first introduced by Professor Arthur Vierendeel in Belgium at the beginning of the century. The Vierendeel Truss differs from the more common triangulated truss in that it contains no diagonal members. The members of the truss are joined rigidly together and each member is required to transmit bending, shear and direct stress.

Professor Vierendeel claimed that Vierendeel Trusses are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the conventional type of truss. This statement has been challenged by many who believe that this type of truss is fundamentally inferior to the more conventional type. …

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller Jan 1959

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller

Masters Theses

"Studies of the intermolecular forces and potential energy functions have been largely of a theoretical nature. Various empirical statements representing these theories have been developed and tested. Of these, the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential is one of the more realistic and has become the most favored when dealing with non-polar molecules.

The values of these “force constants” or the values of the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential parameters, have been determined from both diffusion and viscosity data. Although these “force constants” can be determined from diffusional measurements as well as viscosity data, the literature is predominately filled with values of force constants which …

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead Jan 1959

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead

Masters Theses

"It has been only in recent years that hafnium-free zirconium has been made available for commercial use. When economical methods were developed in 1950 to remove hafnium from zirconium, a metal was produced which not only exhibited good corrosion resistance and desirable physical properties, but which also had a very low absorption cross section for thermal neutrons. These factors have led to its most important application to date, that of a structural material for nuclear reactors.

The outstanding non-nuclear property of zirconium is its corrosion resistance to most mineral acids. Hafnium-free zirconium exhibits outstanding resistance to all mineral acids with …

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr. Jan 1959

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr.

Masters Theses

"Cavitation may be encountered in many scientific fields. Mechanical and civil engineers are concerned with the prevention of cavitation erosion in the design of turbines, propellers, underwater missiles, and similar structures. Biologists and physiologists are seeking more knowledge concerning the tensile strength of liquids, such as, tree sap and the formation of gas bubbles in the blood stream. Finally, the physicist and acoustical engineer must cope with the cavitation problem when working with underwater transducers, cavitation noise, and the propagation of acoustical signals through media in which cavitation is occurring.

There are many forces which hold a liquid together and …

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal Jan 1959

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal

Masters Theses

"Rare earth metals have for some years been used as an inoculant in nonferrous foundry practice and lately in the production of nodular iron. It has been reported that addition of rare earth metal to certain grades of stainless steel so improve the hot malleability that reduction of large size ingots in the blooming mill is now possible. It has been reported that considerable improvement in soundness and mechanical properties of steel castings and wrought products have been attained as a result of small additions of rare earth metals and oxides. In practically all investigations, it has been reported that …

Mechanization Of First Stage Graphitization In Fe- C-Si- Alloys, Dildar S. Gill

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the mechanism of first stage graphitization in iron-carbon-silicon alloys in the light of results obtained by Taub, and to propose a new mechanism of graphitization. The results of preliminary experiments confirmed the findings of Taub as regards the precipitation of secondary carbides. Therefore, it was decided to extend the investigation so as to include the study of growth of secondary carbides. In order to know the chief factor responsible for the growth of secondary carbides, the activation energy was calculated. Another factor which was investigated was the site of graphite nuclei formation”--Purpose …

"Emulsions have been in existence for thousands of years in the form of cosmetics, food, and medicines. Emulsions cover a vast number of products in both household and industrial use. Homogenized milk, butter, mayonnasise, salad dressing, and sauces are emulsions that are used every day at the dinner table. Medical salves, ointments, cosmetic creams and many other pharmaceuticals are used every day by members of both sexes in the human race. Waxes and polishes for automobiles, metal, floors, leathers, and furniture are emulsions. All of the new so called "wonder paints" and "rubber-base paints" are nothing more than an emulsion …

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan Jan 1959

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan

Masters Theses

"Various theories have been put forward about the mechanism of compacting and sintering processes. None of these theories are confirmed. The reason is that most of these theories are based on observations on metallographic specimens, which is not a particularly good tool for such a study. Little data using xray diffraction analysis is available and there seems to be a great need of making a thorough investigation in this direction.

The main object of this investigation is to study xray diffraction patterns of green compacts of aluminum, nickel and copper powders pressed under different compacting pressures to see if any …

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley Jan 1959

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley

Masters Theses

"Over the last few years an increasing amount of interest has been shown in the use of prestressed concrete. As is true in many new methods of design or construction, the properties of existing materials to be used sometimes fail to meet all the desirable characteristics, and certain modifications might be advantageous. This is certainly true of prestressed concrete design and construction, in which a lower modulus of elasticity accompanied by a minimum loss in strength would be desirable. If a lower modulus of elasticity could be obtained for concrete, a lower prestressing load could be used and still maintain …

Frequency Response Of Rotating Servo Components, Yehuda Rachovitsky Jan 1959

Frequency Response Of Rotating Servo Components, Yehuda Rachovitsky

Masters Theses

"The frequency response approach to the design of automatic controls is the dominant one today. This approach in a strict sense may be said to have started with a paper in 1932 by Dr. H. Nyquist, a physicist at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. In this paper Dr. Nyquist was concerned with the stability of feedback amplifiers. This work can be said to have made possible the transcontinental telephone as well as modern radio and television. Dr. Hendrick Bode, mathematician at the Bell Laboratory, extended the results of Dr. Nyquist and obtained some simple design criteria that enabled even technicians without …

A Preliminary Search For Subionizers, Joseph B. Hughes Jan 1959

A Preliminary Search For Subionizers, Joseph B. Hughes

Masters Theses

"A number of physicists of recent years have been attempting to explain the basic nature of the universe in terms of particles. A few particles have been predicted theoretically, and some of these, along with many others have appeared experimentally, Searches for them have presented some interesting experimental problems and brought forth some invaluable experimental apparatus. One of these devices is the Wilson cloud chamber, with which this thesis is concerned.

Of the particles that have been discovered thus far, only the electron and the proton appear to be stable. The rest ultimately decay by the emission of photons and …

Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler Jan 1959

Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler

Masters Theses

"As a study of all types of stabilization would be very lengthy, it was decided to make the object of this research the determination of the effect of the addition of different percentages of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 on the physical characteristics of a silty swelling sodium montmorillionite clay. The purpose of this addition is to flocculate the clay by utilizing a base exchange between the sodium and calcium ions, and thus change the physical characteristics of the soil. The soil by itself has the characteristics of a fat clay, that is it can be broken …

Steady State Temperature Distribution In A Rotating Disk, George Henry Morgan Jan 1959

Steady State Temperature Distribution In A Rotating Disk, George Henry Morgan

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to obtain an expression for the steady state temperature distribution of a disk of uniform thickness rotating at a constant speed in ambient air while absorbing heat through the periphery at a constant rate. Engineers encounter such problems in connection with brakes of several varieties. The general solution obtained here could be extended to similar physical problems such as grinding wheels, disk clutches, and so on.

A differential equation was obtained for the temperature in the disk by the application of Fourier's conduction law and Newton’s convection law. A solution of this equation was …

Effect Of Alkaline Earth Chlorides On Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Acetic Acid-Water System, James F. Carnahan Jan 1959

Effect Of Alkaline Earth Chlorides On Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Acetic Acid-Water System, James F. Carnahan

Masters Theses

"In the separation of a system of liquids by distillation the ease with which they may be separated is most clearly indicated by the relative volatility; the greater the value of the relative volatility, the greater the ease of separation.

A system that contains compounds whose boiling points are spread over a relatively small temperature range is not readily separated by distillation. The addition of a substance that reduces the vapor pressure of one of the components, while having little or no effect on the others, adds to the ease of separation and consequently would decrease the initial size and …

Unsteady State Heat Transfer From A Hot Body To A Liquid, Larry Clinton Atha Jan 1959

Unsteady State Heat Transfer From A Hot Body To A Liquid, Larry Clinton Atha

Masters Theses

"The problem investigated in this thesis is that of unsteady state heat transfer from a hot body to a liquid, a quenching problem. Unsteady state or transient heat transfer is heat transfer in which the temperature distribution changes with time.

If a hot body was suddenly quenched in a large mass of liquid, a film of vapor would form between the hot body and the liquid. For example, if a hot body was quenched in water a film of steam would form between the hot body and the water. It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the heat …

Stability Of Rectangular Plates By Arbitrary Deflection Method, James Arthur Jones Jan 1959

Stability Of Rectangular Plates By Arbitrary Deflection Method, James Arthur Jones

Masters Theses

"Many engineering structures use thin rectangular plates as members. These plates may be loaded and supported in numerous ways. The edges may be freely supported, rigidly supported, or supported by elastic members. The load may be applied normal to the plane of the plate, in which case the problem becomes essentially one of bending. If the load is applied in the plane of the plate, placing it in compression, the problem becomes one of stability.

This investigation is concerned with the stability of plates rigidly supported on all edges and having a compressive load applied to two opposite edges of …

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill Jan 1959

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill

Masters Theses

"The triangular pattern of protection, evacuation and flood plain zoning, as the only truly effective and comprehensive approach to proper flood control, is substantiated in practically all technical publications on this subject by economic and engineering leaders. Yet in actual practice, at the present time, flood plain zoning is not being actively applied by any federal flood control agency and by only one of the forty-nine states faced with this common problem. This lack of direct application was probably best described recently by Walter B. Langbein, Water Resources Division Engineer, U. S. Geological Survey when he said, "Flood Plain Zoning, …

The Vapor Pressures Of Pbo-Sb₂O₃-Sio₂ Mixtures., John Henry Smith Jan 1959

The Vapor Pressures Of Pbo-Sb₂O₃-Sio₂ Mixtures., John Henry Smith

Masters Theses

"The removal of antimony is one of the important steps in the production of pure lead. The process of removing antimony from impure lead bullion is called "lead softening". The most common method used is to blow air into a bath of impure molten lead. The impurities, primarily antimony, arsenic and tin, if present, are oxidized and form a slag or "dross" which floats on the surface of the lead bath. A considerable amount of lead is oxidized in this step and joins the other oxidized compounds in the dross. This dross is skimmed from the bath of molten lead …
