The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker
The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker
Masters Theses
A six-month-old infant was conditioned to imitate four verbal cues presented by an adult experimenter by using food as a reinforcer. Aversive schedules (escape-avoidance of, or punishment with a loud buzzer) were then introduced to suppress inattentive behavior. Inattention defined as looking away from the investigator, crying, rate of vocalizations, and accuracy of imitations were measured. Three conclusions of the experiment were: 1) verbal imitation can be shaped and maintained through positive reinforcement; 2) the use of aversive schedules is not necessarily beneficial for the performance of the imitative task, or for the general well-being of the child.

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Instructional Emphasis Of Two Filing Textbooks Commonly Used In Secondary Schools And Their Relation To The Filing Procedures In The Business Office, Patricia Ann Skinner
Masters Theses
This study compared the instructional material in two textbooks commonly used for high school filing instruction with the perceptions of records supervisors and office practice teachers.
A questionnaire was designed for each of the two major groups of respondents. Usable survey instruments were completed by supervisors of 67 offices in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area and office practice teachers in the 13 high schools in the same geographic area.
While the records supervisors and office practice teachers were in agreement on a number of points relating to the filing process and instructional emphases (using a rank-order mismatch formula), they were …
Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco
Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco
Masters Theses
In Experiment I, the effects of low fixed ratios on individual escape behavior of rats was studied. When FR sessions were compared to CRF sessions, measures related to shock delivery showed highest percentage increases, especially at FR-5.
Animals were then paired. Two schedules were analyzed as alternatives to individual escape. In Experiment II, shock was terminated when a specified FR was completed, either by the responses of one animal or by the total responses of both animals. Escape as a function of both animals responding was not maintained. In Experiment III, shock was terminated individually as before, or when both …

A Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of An Interest Grouping Classification For Primary Grade Children, Dianne T. Mcafee Williams
Masters Theses
The purpose was to determine if a subject arrangement of easy fiction books, based on the interests of primary-grade children, and denoted by picture symbols, would make the students more satisfied with, and independent in, their book selections, as compared to an author arrangement of easy fiction books.
The study was divided into two parts, the former dealing with the author arrangement and the latter dealing with the subject arrangement. Tally sheets of student subject requests were kept by the librarian in a comparison of the two arrangements. Followup included questionnaires to primary grade teachers and librarian, and interviews with …

Inertial Navigation Performance Improvement Realized By The Technique Of Interrupted Alignment, Ralph E. Herndon
Inertial Navigation Performance Improvement Realized By The Technique Of Interrupted Alignment, Ralph E. Herndon
Masters Theses
"Present on-aircraft ground alignment gyro bias methods can basically be categorized as (1) periodic maintenance performed by the ground crew, (2) pre-flight calibration requiring a two-position gyro compass alignment or (3) optimal filter estimation of the north gyro bias error.
This thesis discussion presents an interrupted alignment method that allows adequate level axes gyro bias correction without the restrictions associated with a conventional two-position gyrocompass alignment (i.e., a minimum time for bias calibration on a steady aircraft). The interrupted alignment technique allows the pilot to select the navigate mode at any point during gyrocompass and reselect the align mode at …
A Study Of The Ability Of Surface Active Materials To Increase The Evaporation Rates Of Small, Freely Falling Water Drops, David Alan Sierawski
A Study Of The Ability Of Surface Active Materials To Increase The Evaporation Rates Of Small, Freely Falling Water Drops, David Alan Sierawski
Masters Theses
"The evaporation rate at 30°C of water droplets partially covered by surface active materials (SAM) were determined. While two of the SAM were studied at a single dew point depression (ΔTDP), seven others were examined over a range of ΔTDP values. It was found, by comparison with pure water drops under identical conditions, that SAM increases the evaporation rate as compared to the rate of an uncontaminated drop. The lack of effect of the hydrophobic chain length and the possible effect of the hydrophilic group on this phenomenon are discussed. The explanation proposed is that at 30°C …

The Study Of Sulfur Dioxide Distribution Surrounding A Lead Smelting Industry In The New Lead Belt Of Southeastern Missouri, Jeng-Sheng Hwang
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to study the magnitude and distribution of sulfur dioxide in the air surrounding the smelter of Missouri Lead Operating Company (now AMAX Lead Company of Missouri) in southeast Missouri, and evaluate the inter-relationships between sulfur dioxide incidents, meteorological factors, and plant operations.
Field research was conducted employing two weather stations and three sulfur dioxide monitoring stations. The data obtained from strip charts at each station were recorded and analyzed manually as well as by UMR computer facilities. From the studies conducted, it was found that the annual predominant winds occurred from S and SE …
Numerical Calculation Of The Currents In Bent Wire Antennas, Min Ho Kang
Numerical Calculation Of The Currents In Bent Wire Antennas, Min Ho Kang
Masters Theses
"The current distribution for bent dipole antennas is numerically calculated by using a digital computer. A delta-gap at the center is assumed for the drive. Several different bend-angles are considered including the cases of the straight wire and the inverted-L. The total length of the wire considered is λ/2 while the ratio of the bent portion over the vertical portion is varied. The method of solution is based on Mei's integral equation and the method of moments. The use of Mei's integral equation eliminates the need for the application of the boundary condition at the point of bending. For …

Studies On Muropeptide Amino Acids Of Rhizobium Japonicum, Mohammed Alauddin
Masters Theses
The isolation of Rhizobium japonicum cell walls was performed by ultrasonication and the enzymatic digestion with DNase, RNase and pronase separately. Crude cell walls were washed with M NaCl and 5% SDS and were isolated by 20,000 g centrifugation. Muropeptide amino acids were freed by hydrolysis at 121C for 10 minutes in 6N HCl.
Detection of Rhizobium japonicum murein layer amino acids was done by 2-dimensional instant thin layer chromatography on silica gel plates. The solvents found most favorable, were n-butanol: acetic acid: water and n-propanol: 34% ammonium hydroxide. Amino acid spots were developed by spraying ninhydrin on the chromatograms, …

The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard
The Consideration Of Some Aspects Of Two Methods Used To Study Ion Association, Richard Karl Gard
Masters Theses
An investigation was made into the possibility of determining thermodynamic ion association equilibrium constants for salts important in the study of seawater using spectrophotometry and ion selective electrodes. Calcium sulfate was used as the test salt. The success of the spectrophotometric method was found to depend upon the choice of a suitable indicator and refinement of the proper instrumental techniques. The indicators investigated were 1-(2'-hydroxy-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, 1-(2'-hydroxy-5'-chloro-1'-benzeneazo)-2-hydroxynaphthalene, and ammonium purpurate (murexide). Ammonium purpurate was found to be the most suitable indicator. Spectra of these three indicators and their calcium complexes at pH 10 are included in the paper. The ion selective …
