A Novel Synthesis Of Cyclic And Acyclic 3-Alkenoic Acids Via Ionization/Elimination Of Β-Lactones, Stephen Lucas Maluleka

Masters Theses

Exposure of spiro β-lactones and 3-substituted 4,4-dialkyl oxetan-2-ones to magnesium bromide in diethyl ether solvent resulted in the smooth generation of β,γ-unsaturated acid derivatives in high yield and isomeric purity. It is believed that this reaction occurs via the formation of a stable tertiary carbocation at the β-carbon resulting from cleavage of the carbon-oxygen sigma bond due to the complexation of magnesium cation with the ring oxygen atom. Rapid loss of an adjacent proton then furnishes the unsaturated acids. The β-lactone precursors were prepared by the dehydration of β-hydroxy acid derivatives (obtained from the condensation of ketones with acetic acid …

Learning To Forage, Daniel Von Holten Jan 1989

Learning To Forage, Daniel Von Holten

Masters Theses

Learning to Forage is a collection of poems resulting from my own progression from a rural environment, Walnut, Bureau County, Illinois, to the world outside. I illustrate this progression using a persona called Antaeus, named after the Greek demi-god who received his strength from the earth. Therefore, for the most part, Antaeus is me; as the speaker or consciousness in each poem he is aware of everything that happens in the collection.

In the first poems, Antaeus is comfortable in his farm community, but gradually he becomes aware of the death, decay and stagnation. He becomes dissatisfied with his world, …

Effects Of Methylxanthines On Newborn Rat Respiration, Craig Gatto Jan 1989

Effects Of Methylxanthines On Newborn Rat Respiration, Craig Gatto

Masters Theses

Methylxanthines (MX), such as theophylline, are commonly used in the treatment of recurrent apnea due to their stimulant effects on the respiratory center. Structure-activity studies have demonstrated that substitution of alkyl groups on the 3-position of the xanthine nucleus results in increased bronchodilator potency, while substitution on the 1-position is important for adenosine antagonism and CNS stimulation. Three different alkylxanthines were studied to determine the structural requirements for respiratory stimulation. Respiratory rates and volumes were determined in 4- to 7-day-old rats using a volume displacement body plethysmograph. Measurements were made before and at 5 minute intervals after subcutaneous (s.c.) injection …

Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis

Masters Theses

Prior to 1900, American scientists struggled to formulate a sexual norm. Their categorization of sexuality ironically led to the creation of a label (homosexual) by which individuals created and expressed a sexual identity at variance with the newly created norm.

By 1910, the climate of moral reform (Progressivism) led to the discovery (and documentation) of a homosexual subculture in larger American cities. With Chicago and New York City as examples, the author documents the growth of this sexual underground in the period between 1910 and 1940. Using primary sources such as diaries, letters, autobiographies and novels, the world of the …
