Multiple-Site Fatigue Cracking Methodology To Assess Structural Integrity Of Aircraft Riveted Panels, Haroldo Chacon
Multiple-Site Fatigue Cracking Methodology To Assess Structural Integrity Of Aircraft Riveted Panels, Haroldo Chacon
Masters Theses
“Multiple Site Damage (MSD) is the most common source of Widespread Fatigue Damage (WFD) affecting structural integrity of aging aircraft fleets. Therefore, an understanding of its progression, the development of methods to prevent the onset, and the maintenance procedures precluding WFD are important to improve aircraft fleet longevity. A reliable and efficient numerical methodology to perform detailed Multiple Site Damage assessment in riveted structural joints was developed. A probabilistic methodology was employed in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation technique; the fatigue initiation life at every potential crack initiation site was determined and initial damage scenarios were generated. Probabilistic crack growth …

A Compact Wavelength Meter Using A Multimode Fiber, Ogbole Collins Inalegwu
Masters Theses
“Wavelength meters are very important for precision measurements of both pulses and continuous-wave optical sources. Conventional wavelength meters employ gratings, prisms, interferometers, and other wavelength-sensitive materials in their design. Here, we report a simple and compact wavelength meter based on a section of multimode fiber and a camera. The concept is to correlate the multimodal interference pattern (i.e., speckle pattern) at the end-face of a multimode fiber with the wavelength of the input lightsource. Through a series of experiments, specklegrams from the end face of a multimode fiber as captured by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera were recorded; the images …

Seed Modeling Of An Esd Gun Discharge To A Usb Cable, Yang Xu
Seed Modeling Of An Esd Gun Discharge To A Usb Cable, Yang Xu
Masters Theses
“An IC protected by a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode may fail if the TVS device does not turn on or does not turn on quickly enough, causing the IC to take the full brunt of the electrostatic discharge (ESD) event. Transient simulation models have been developed for ESD protection devices for the purpose of system-efficient ESD design (SEED). The TVS modeling methodology has been improved to better represent the physics that occurs during the TVS response and more accurately predict the interactions between off-chip and on-chip protection devices. Moreover, a complicated test scenario -- an ESD gun discharge through …

Cellular Attachment On Poly(Lactic Acid) For Use In Tissue Engineering, Stephen R. Hunter
Masters Theses
Tissue engineering is a promising new method for organ regeneration. This method can be used to repair damaged tissue, or possibly replace a fully functional organ. In summary, a biopsy is taken from a donor, isolated, then grown onto a framework resembling an organ. Once grown; it is then transplanted into the patient. Over time, the body will degrade the scaffold, leaving the organ or tissue in its place. As this scaffold is present in the body for an extended time; factors like biocompatibility, toxicity, immunogenicity, and structural stability must be researched.
Several polymers have already been researched for use …

A defining feature of North Carolina is her geography. English colonists who founded the first settlements in the east adapted their old lifestyles to their new environs, and as a result, a burgeoning planter and merchant class emerged throughout the Tidewater and coastal regions. This eastern gentry replicated the customs, manners, and traditions of the Old World: donning the latest London fashions, hosting lavish balls, horseraces, and foxhunts, and erecting homes furnished with luxurious appointments. In the Piedmont, in what was then the western frontier, German and Scots-Irish immigrants streamed down the Great Wagon Road in search of similar opportunities. …
