This research problem was done in connection with the fluoride balance studies on twelve children at Plymouth State Home. The retention balance studies of fluoride by children can be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and feces after administration of the fluoride in water or in vitamins as sodium fluoride. The fluoride balance study was repeated, because in the previous study (19), there were no samples collected for a base day in which the fluoride was not given. Goldblatt and his associates (1934) were the first to show that persistent arterial hypertension could be produced by renal ischemia. They produced renal ischemia by two procedures which involved reduction of the blood supply to one or both kidneys by means of adjustable silver clamps and removal of the non-ischemic kidney where only one kidney was made ischemic. In one procedure the clamps were placed directly on the renal arteries. Many observations have been made on the behavior in the field of the bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and of other gallinaceous birds. Stoddard (1950) has described in some detail various aspects of bobwhite behavior. Stokes (1963) conducted a laboratory study on the agonistic and sexual behavior of the chukar partridge. No behavioral studies, to the writer's knowledge, however, have been conducted on bobwhites under controlled environmental conditions. This investigation was concerned with the microenvironment of the daytime resting places of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) in southwestern Michigan. Many studies have been made of the habitat (Friley, 1955), cover (Hendrickson, 1938; Leopold, 1942; Linduska, 1947), food (Trippensee, 1938; Dice, 1945), and home ranges (Haugen, 1942) of cottontail rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to search for possible correlations between various physical factors and the daytime activity and resting places of cottontails.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical oxidation of alkyl benzene sulfonates with potassium permanganate. ABS concentrations of 3, 5 and 10 mg/1, and potassium permanganate dosages of 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/1 were used. The study was made in deionized water at room temperature and a pH value of 8.5. A 5-hour detention period was provided. The ABS concentration, potassium permanganate concentration, foam volume and foam stability were the main parameters employed.

"The acceleration of neutrons via their magnetic dipole moment in an axially symmetric magnetic field is considered. Conditions for bunching are derived and expressions for the off-axis forces are developed. It was found that neutrons off axis are forced back onto the axis and that neutrons slightly depolarized remain in their initial state. A calculation of the acceleration is made using the field of a current loop and the conclusion is that under present laboratory capabilities a neutron accelerator is not feasible"--Abstract, page ii.

"The relation between quantum-mechanical concepts and biological systems is explored by studying the relation of both to the concepts of heat capacity and entropy. It is shown that the most important substances in living matter have extremely low heat capacities and entropies at ordinary temperatures. A critical analysis of the two types of quantum-mechanical interactions between particles and the interactions occurring in low-entropy systems shows that the wave properties of matter are strongly predominant in the chemical elements that constitute 99 percent of living matter. It is concluded that the wave aspects of matter are strongly predominant in biological systems. …

The studies were conducted using a continuous flow activated sludge laboratory unit. Two different synthetic dairy waste systems were used in this investigation, the 0.05 Percent Skim Milk Waste System and the 0.1 Percent Skim Milk Waste System.
