"Otoliths are calcareous structures occurring in the auditory labyrinths of teleost (bony) fishes. Three pairs of these earstones normally are found: the sagitta, in the sacculus; the asteriscus, in the lagena; and the lapillus in the utriculus. In fishes other than the Order cypriniformes (carp, catfishes, and related forms), the sagitta is the largest otolith, and it may be used in taxonomic and other studies. Fossil earstones of cuskeels (Family Ophidiiae-Brotulidae), constituting the Preophidion complex, occur in relative abundance at various levels in the Claiborne, Jackson, and Vicksburg groups of the Lower Tertiary on the Gulf Coast. "The fungus, Hygrophorous conicus, produces the enzyme, indole acetic acid oxidase, when grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA). Since the IAA and OIAA absorb maximally at two different wavelengths the use of spectrophotometric analysis was possible for assaying for the IAA oxidase activity. "The primary objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of nickel on activated sludge over a comprehensive range of concentrations and to evaluate the ability of the sludge to acclimate and become more tolerant to the metal. Six one-liter fill and draw activated sludge units were fed domestic sewage; five of these units also received constant, increasing, and shock doses of nickel while the sixth was maintained as a control. The stainless steel fermentor has a multi-speed agitator and aeration rates as high as 15 cubic feet per hour. Temperature indicating, temperature controlling, pH measuring, and automatic foam controlling systems are included in the design.

Sulfite oxidation rates have been determined for the unit at 15 operating conditions. A maximum sulfite oxidation rate of 1060 millimoles of oxygen per liter per hour has been obtained.

"Peripheral blood pulse monitors are highly susceptible to noise-artifact-- in their present stage of development. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate a feasible means for filtering the artifact, using existing monitors. Since no peripheral pulse monitor (transducer) was available for experimentation, a simulated test input was devised with frequency variations from JO cycles/minute to 1.50 cycles/minute.
