An Electron Microscopical Study Of The Ultrastructure And Classification Hemocyte Of The Grasshopper, Melanoplus Differentials (Thomas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), Andrejs Liepins

The hemocytes of the fifth instar nymphs of the grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) have been the subject of this study. The hemocytes of this insect, based on the fine structures of its cells, have been found to fall into four main categories or groups: Nucleocytes, Plasmatocytes, Granulocytes and Coagulocytes. The bases for their classification are differences in the ultrastructure of the cytoplasmic organelles as well as cytoplasmic inclusions are revealed as revealed by electron microscopy.

Ten garter snakes were tested for runway acquisition, correct turn response in a simple T-maze, or both, for food reinforcement. Seven of seven subjects met criterion for learning to run a 23 inch long alleyway. Mean latency times showed a general decrease over a 23 day period. Five of nine subjects met criterion for learning a correct turn response in a simple T-maze. Subjects mastering the task required from 14-157 trials. One of two subjects met criterion for learning the reverse response of the T-maze exercise, requiring 35 trials. Results are similar to those previously reported for reptiles and other …

The Use Of Behavior Modification To Control The Classroom Behavior Of Socially Maladjusted Junior High School Students, Jack L. Wheeler

A base rate of disruptive and inappropriate classroom behavior was obtained for 40 junior high school children from a program for the socially maladjusted. Teachers involved with these subjects were given a six week in-service training program reviewing the basic techniques of operant conditioning. Parents of 12 subjects were trained in operant conditioning and were asked to use these techniques to control inappropriate behaviors of the subjects at home. When a social and token reinforcement program was introduced in the classroom for all 40 subjects, the frequency of disruptive and inappropriate behavior declined in all subjects. The Effects Of The Four Psychological Primary Colors On Gsr, Heart Rate, And Respiration Rate, Keith W. Jacobs

Measurement of GSR, heart rate, and respiration rate were taken on twenty-four male S's during presentation of four colors (red, yellow, green, blue). Four sequences of color presentations were used based on a 4 by 4 latin square with six subjects receiving each presentation. Significant color effects (p < .05) were found when GSR was used as the measure of activation. The most arousing color was red, followed by green, yellow, and blue, with significant differences in arousal value found between colors. Significant trial effects, disregarding colors, were found in respiration rate. No significant effects on heart rate were found as a function of trials or color. The arousal values of the colors do not support either a linear or U-shaped function of wave length.

Gastro-Intestinal And Abdominal Helminths Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Southern Illinois, Thomas W. Cook

In November and December 1971, forty deer from five southern Illinois counties were examined by necropsy for gastro-intestinal and abdominal helminths. Eight species of gastro-intestinal nematodes were found: Gongylonema pulchrum, Spiculopteroides odocoilei, Ostertagia mossi, Haemonchus contortus, Cooperia sp., Capillaria sp., Trichuris ovis and Oesophagostomum venulosum. Setaria yehi, a filiariad nematode, was found in the abdominal cavity. Moniezia benedeni was the only cestode found. No trematodes were recovered.

The viscera of 103 bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus), from east central Illinois counties, were collected during November and December of 1971 and examined for helminth parasites. Two nematodes were identified: Dispharynx nasuta (9.7%) and Ascaridia sp. (7.8%). The rate of infection varied significantly between counties but there was no difference in parasitism of males and females.

During Fall Quarter, 1970, 339 students enrolled in life science taught by the audio-tutorial method and 492 students in life science by the traditional method at Eastern Illinois University. This total population was compared with respect to achievement as measured by grades. A sample of 175 students was drawn from the population. The 76 audio-tutorial students were compared with the 99 students from traditional sections with respect to achievement as measured by grades earned, retention of material, and predicted grade point average.

Emphasis was placed on the evaluation of both the rate and the equilibrium of adsorption and desorption. Two types of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides were employed in this study. These are dieldrin and heptachlor, both of which are commonly used in today's agricultural applications. "Methods for determining the optical constants, the real and the imaginary part of the complex index of refraction, for weakly and strongly absorbing liquids are reviewed and evaluated. Both reflection and transmission methods were considered and preliminary steps are taken for determining the optical constants for both water and oil in the visible region (0.45 - 0.65 microns) of the spectrum. A low resolution spectrometer was used and the transmission measurements through fuel oil, number 1 through 6, and crude oil were performed. The purpose of this study was to characterize swine waste collected under a slotted feeding floor using a water-carriage system, and to evaluate the treatment of this waste in a staged lagoon system consisting of an anaerobic, a dual anaerobic-aerobic, and an aerobic lagoon. "The guidance personnel in a high school are often burdened with the duty of hand scheduling the student's courses. Using the computer as a sub-optimizing tool in the registration of students, however, can cut scheduling time dramatically and relieve the guidance department of an onerous chore. The technique described in this investigation uses a conflict matrix that schedules the student's request and keeps the class load level within the course sections. "A preliminary study was done to determine the feasibility of using a compressed fibrous teflon (PTFE) silicone polymer membrane in extracorporeal oxygenation devices. A series of composite membranes were fabricated, using different concentrations of a dimethyl silicone polymer dissolved in petroleum ether, to give membranes having variable oxygen transfer properties. A gas-gas system was chosen to obtain the necessary transfer data. Data were obtained by transferring pure oxygen through the membranes into a mixture of 47 mole percent oxygen and 53 mole percent carbon dioxide. Using 28 male undergraduate university students provided with continuous oscilloscope display of basal skin resistance, this study investigated voluntary control of the GSR and concurrent changes in respiration. It was found, given feedback, subjects could voluntarily raise or lower their GSR. Subjects instructed to increase their GSR (N-14) could do so within the first trial session. However, subjects instructed to decrease their GSR (N-14) required additional practice. With less than 20 minutes of practice all subjects were able to reach a criterion of 2,500 ohms change from their basal level. Subjects increasing their GSR were found to have a significant …
