Hydrology Of Small Drainage Areas, James Kinchen Searcy
Hydrology Of Small Drainage Areas, James Kinchen Searcy
Masters Theses
"Realizing the need for data on small drainage areas the Missouri Highway Commission in 1947 began a cooperative project with the Water Resources Division of the United States Geological Survey which includes the establishment of small area gaging stations and recording rain gages.
The purpose of this investigation is to study some of the data collected in the few years of operation of these small area stations with the aim of testing some of the hydrologic tools useful in the study of larger drainage basins to determine their applicability on small drainage basins. The relationship between the runoff of large …
Activation Energy For Recrystallization In Rolled Silver, Krishan Kumar Tangri
Activation Energy For Recrystallization In Rolled Silver, Krishan Kumar Tangri
Masters Theses
"In several metals the process of recrystallization is accompanied by a change in the orientation of the recrystallized material with respect to the cold rolled material. If the change is sufficiently large, the changing position of the crystals can be determined by measuring the change in the intensity of the characteristic Bragg-reflection with a Geiger counter x-ray spectrometer. Recent determinations of the activation energies of copper and a 50/50 iron-nickel alloy have been made by using this x-ray technique. Both of these metals show a decided shift in the orientation as the material is recrystallized.
Silver was examined to find …
A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller
A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller
Masters Theses
" ''A Study of Size of Diamonds in Diamond Drilling' is the research problem which will be discussed in this treatise.
The author's interest in the effect of size of diamonds was created by Mr. R. D. Longyear of the E. J. Longyear Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Longyear, when asked for suggestions for a research problem concerning diamond drilling suggested, among other things, that there was a need for further work on the factor of size of stones. After extensive reading and reviewing, the author learned that many investigators had recognized changes in results attributable to changes in size …
The Design Of A Closed-Loop Voltage Regulator For A D-C Generator, Ernest P. Longerich
The Design Of A Closed-Loop Voltage Regulator For A D-C Generator, Ernest P. Longerich
Masters Theses
"The methods of obtaining voltage regulation for a d-c generator are many, and they vary in complexity according to the requirements of the loads being supplied.
A need for zero voltage regulation is not uncommon in power supplies that are used in laboratory work. It is frequently not enough, however, to have a supply whose steady state regulation is zero; the need may also exist for fast transient response to changes in load.
In general, then, the criteria for excellent voltage-versus-load characteristics of a d-c power supply might be stated as follows:
- It has zero steady state error.
- It has …
Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei
Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei
Masters Theses
"The usual connotation of the word rehabilitation as applied to land areas is the restoration of that land to its former efficiency. However, in the spirit of conservation that is essential to our standard of living, the word has begun to have added meaning. In the fullest concept, rehabilitation involves a study of soil characteristics and capabilities, and creation of productive uses of which the land was not capable in its original condition. The true conservationist has an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the future generations of this country. The United States Forestry Service and the United States …

The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
This study, entitled, "An Experimental Study of the Value of Mental Arithmetic in Grades Seven and Eight," is the report of an experimental investigation in teaching arithmetic. It was conducted for the purpose of determining whether or not the use of daily drill in the four fundamental processes or arithmetic, as well as in thought problems that involve one or more of these fundamental processes, has a tendency to develop general arithmetical abilities in children.
As far as the writer can determine, little research has been done in this area. The dearth …

A Comparison Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Teaching Seventh Grade Arithmetic With A Textbook And Without A Textbook, Alfred John Reynolds
Masters Theses
Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background
The Place of Arithmetic in Modern Education
The subject of arithmetic is as old as human history itself and yet it holds a very important place in modern education. In order to have a clear understanding of its present position it is desirable that a brief history of arithmetic be given. Since the history of arithmetic is long and since much has been written concerning it, an attempt will be made here to cover only the main thread in its development.
The Babylonians, according to records, made the first use of arithmetic. Karpinski …

The Problem and Its Background
The Importance of Arithmetic
Man, since ancient times, has found a need for the use of numbers. This need started with simple numeration of quantities in daily life, and developed gradually to the complex use of arithmetic in trade and exchange. In the simplest form of family life, the number sense was exhibited in counting members of the family, years in one's life, or articles in one's possession. But as a family contacted other groups, and simple exchange took place, a gradual increase in need for numbers resulted in greater use of systems …

The Problem and Its Background
Biology in the Secondary School Curriculum
There is ample evidence, both direct and tacit, that biology has justified its place in the curriculum of the secondary school.
Among the direct evidence is that stated by Heiss, Obourn, and Hoffman1 as follows:
"On the Senior High School level, general biology is well established as a tenth grade course and is usually offered as an elective for each of three years. There is a considerable body of evidence available that seems to indicate that both general science and biology are going a long way …

An industry-wide research program has resulted in the development of improved methods of controlling corrosion of such equipment.
The purpose of this paper is to assemble and correlate the information concerning the different causes, the detection, and the mitigation of corrosion of metals used in the oil fields of the world. The causes that are presented in this …
Torsional Modulus Of Rupture Of Thick-Walled Magnesium Alloy Fs-1 Tubing, Delbert R. Cox
Torsional Modulus Of Rupture Of Thick-Walled Magnesium Alloy Fs-1 Tubing, Delbert R. Cox
Masters Theses
"Magnesium is taking a more prominent position in the structure of aircraft, and because of this, it is important that the mechanical properties of the material be understood more fully. In the high speeds of today, the tendency is toward the use of thick-walled tubing instead of the thin-walled tubing with stiffening structures. For this reason, it is of interest to note the characteristics of thick-walled tubing when subjected to torsion.
This thesis was first suggested by a circular letter on proposed thesis titles from the Commanding General, Air Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. When interest was …

Air Flow Through Cloth Screening, Kurt Rauf Basakinci
Air Flow Through Cloth Screening, Kurt Rauf Basakinci
Masters Theses
"The object of this investigation is to obtain an expression whereby flow of air through woven cloth can be predicted with a reasonable degree of accuracy, in terms of the pressure drop across the screen, the density, the viscosity of the air flowing; these latter properties being functions of the pressure and temperature of the air.
The development of an expression from which to predict the relationship between the air flow through a screen and the pressure drop across it without resort to experimental procedure seems to the author to be worthwhile undertaking.
The chief aim of this investigation was …
An Investigation Of Ruthenium As A Possible Ceramic Colorant, John Charles Williams
An Investigation Of Ruthenium As A Possible Ceramic Colorant, John Charles Williams
Masters Theses
"Some portion of almost every writing dealing with the historical development of ceramic products is devoted to describing the application of colors as found on even the most ancient specimens known to exist. A vase bearing the name of an Egyptian king living 5000 B. C. was glazed in green and inlaid with purple. There are many such examples of the utilization of color in ceramics which illustrate to a certain extent the aesthetic tastes of the very earliest and primitive civilizations.
In those early times, only a few elements were known and available that could be used for such …
The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb
The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb
Masters Theses
"Soil is a material that has been formed through the influence of many different natural agencies. The engineer is not so much interested in how the soil was formed, but he does want to know the characteristics of the soil with respect to its use as a structural material. Therefore, the engineer is primarily interested in the physical properties of soils.
Much progress has been made during the past twenty five years in the study of Soil Mechanics, but even today there is a tendency among engineers to think of soil as just a mixture of clay, sand, silt and …

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan
Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan
Masters Theses
"Modulation of a radio frequency carrier can be defined as the variation of some wave parameter such as amplitude, frequency, or phase, in accordance with intelligence to be transmitted. An unmodulated carrier is simply a continuous sine wave and contains no information other than the fact that the transmitter has been turned on. The spectrum of an unmodulated signal consists of a single frequency. Any type of modulation is characterized by the appearance of additional frequencies, known as sidebands. One of the fundamental problems in radio engineering is to reduce the number of sidebands to a minimum and still adequately …
Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan
Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan
Masters Theses
"The writer of this thesis believes that the most important thing next to the original construction cost of a road, is the maintenance cost. It is apparent that the maintenance cost for any given road is directly proportional to the percentage of worn out sections in that road. It is believed that climatic conditions are the very first cause of road failures and that traffic on the road often has a secondary degree of importance in the causing of road surface failures….
It is obvious that extreme heat as well as extreme cold will ruin a road. A heavy traffic …
The Completion, Adjustment, And Operation Of A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectrograph, William Clinton Johnson-Chamberlain
The Completion, Adjustment, And Operation Of A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectrograph, William Clinton Johnson-Chamberlain
Masters Theses
"Most gases, and particularly oxygen and nitrogen, are nearly opaque to radiation in the region from about 1800 Å downward to about 2 Å and hence, for spectroscopic work in this region, the removal of these gases is mandatory. Popular usage generally refers to the range mentioned above as the vacuum ultraviolet. That there remains much experimental work to be done in the vacuum ultraviolet has been pointed out by Boyce in his exhaustive survey of vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. In order to fill in some of these gaps, Mr. L. H. Chapin, in the, spring of 1950, undertook the construction …
A Lead Sulfide Near Infrared Detection System, William V. Cummings Jr.
A Lead Sulfide Near Infrared Detection System, William V. Cummings Jr.
Masters Theses
"The infrared region of the spectrum is conveniently divided into the near infrared, which extends from the red end of the visible to about 25 microns, and the far infrared, which continues to an ill-defined division point of approximately 1,000 microns. The near infrared region has been further subdivided on the basis of instrumental techniques so that the particular portion of the spectrum consisting of radiations of wave length up to 3 microns has become known as the photoelectric infrared.
Several types of detection instruments have been designed and perfected for work in the photoelectric region, but new methods and …

An Application Of The Atomic Distribution Function Of Liquid Mercury, Robert Lee Choate
An Application Of The Atomic Distribution Function Of Liquid Mercury, Robert Lee Choate
Masters Theses
"The study of liquids and the knowledge of an adequate description of liquid structure have not advanced as rapidly as it has in the case of solids and gases. In a perfect crystal, the atoms or molecules are held in equilibrium positions by strong intermolecular forces. There are vibrations about these positions, but the translational energy is negligible. The molecules of an ideal gas move independently of each other and the intermolecular potential energy may be neglected. For each of these cases it is possible to derive a partition function from which the properties of the state can be readily …

The philosophy of modern education emphasizes the necessity of meeting the individual needs of all boys and girls Education of all the children of all the people is a phrase with which all teachers of the modern school. are familiar as being the educational birthright of every child. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the school to make pupil-activities an experience in living which is within the child's power or realization and appreciation and which will at the same time help to prepare him for a contributing adult citizenship. As a result, we find a great deal of attention being …
A Study Of The Influence Of A Church School Upon Its Youth, Esther Jane Deweerd
A Study Of The Influence Of A Church School Upon Its Youth, Esther Jane Deweerd
Masters Theses
First Paragraph:
There is a growing need for more effective religious training for youth today. Educators recognize this and articles appearing in our magazine and papers sense it too. Studies and research into what the young people themselves feel also indicates that they recognize this lack in their training. The problem is receiving much thought and study by educators, church workers, and legislators alike, and valuable suggestions appear in these same periodicals, showing us ways of meeting this need. A few examples will show us what they are saying.
