The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale
The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale
Masters Theses
"In acoustics the term ultrasonics is used to refer to those frequencies which are above the range of human hearing; that is, frequencies above approximately 20,000 cycles per second. Since the laws of sound which are valid for the audible range are also valid in the ultrasonic range and since the wave length of ultrasonics is much shorter than that of audible sound, ultrasonic has proved very valuable in the calculation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. This is especially notable in the case of liquids, where the velocity of sound is much …
Deposition Of Metallic Coatings From Fused Salt Baths, Andrew Hessler Larson
Deposition Of Metallic Coatings From Fused Salt Baths, Andrew Hessler Larson
Masters Theses
"This thesis is the result of an investigation undertaken to study some of the important factors affecting the deposition of metallic diffusion coatings on other metals immersed in a fused salt bath….
There are many methods which have been devised to obtain diffusion coatings on various metals. One which is quite well known and used commercially is the process of “chromizing” which produces a diffusion layer if chromium on another metal. One method of “chromizing” consists of immersing the specimen to be coated in a mixed chloride fused bath containing chromium metal flakes. Another method consists of packing a low …

An Investigation Of The Use Of Surface-Active Agents In The Secondary Recovery Of Oil By Water Flooding, Robert P. Schafer
An Investigation Of The Use Of Surface-Active Agents In The Secondary Recovery Of Oil By Water Flooding, Robert P. Schafer
Masters Theses
"The importance of producing oil cannot be emphasized enough in this modem world. Therefore, when primary methods of production seemingly exhaust the oil reservoirs, a secondary method of producing more oil is a necessity. At the present time, secondary methods of oil recovery have developed into a large industry. They are not a new development. The need of introducing compressed air or air-gas mixtures into the wells to increase production was quickly realized. Water flooding methods followed, and at first were restricted to the Eastern fields. Later, about 1935, systematic water flooding methods were developed and applied all over the …
Porosity-Permeability Relationships Of Unconsolidated Sands, Robert Marchel Ponder
Porosity-Permeability Relationships Of Unconsolidated Sands, Robert Marchel Ponder
Masters Theses
"Unconsolidated sand reservoirs containing oil and gas present difficult problems to the petroleum engineer. Among these problems is that of the determination of the reservoir porosity to facilitate oil and gas reserve and evaluation calculations.
This problem is especially difficult because, to the author's knowledge, no method has been devised to obtain a core sample of the unconsolidated sand that retains the same porosity and permeability characteristics in the laboratory as it had underground. As a result, the petroleum engineer must rely upon empirical methods of calculating the reservoir porosity when the sand is not consolidated.
Many investigators have attempted …
A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller
A Study Of Size Of Diamonds In Diamond Drilling, Robert J. M. Miller
Masters Theses
" ''A Study of Size of Diamonds in Diamond Drilling' is the research problem which will be discussed in this treatise.
The author's interest in the effect of size of diamonds was created by Mr. R. D. Longyear of the E. J. Longyear Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Longyear, when asked for suggestions for a research problem concerning diamond drilling suggested, among other things, that there was a need for further work on the factor of size of stones. After extensive reading and reviewing, the author learned that many investigators had recognized changes in results attributable to changes in size …
Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs
Oil Field Corrosion, Edwin Harry Barsachs
Masters Theses
"The corrosion of metals in the petroleum industry has become an important engineering problem. The rapid increase during recent years in costs of steel has caused the industry to intensify its efforts to minimize corrosion losses in pipe lines and well casings. An industry-wide research program has resulted in the development of improved methods of controlling corrosion of such equipment.
The purpose of this paper is to assemble and correlate the information concerning the different causes, the detection, and the mitigation of corrosion of metals used in the oil fields of the world. The causes that are presented in this …

The Polarographic Determination Of Germanium, Herbert L. Bowkley
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to study the polarographic behavior of germanium in various aqueous solutions. In addition to the simple polarographic behavior of germanium some attention was given to the applications or polarography for the development of an anlytical [sic] procedure for its quantitative determination in zinc ore concentrates and spelter fume materials"--Introduction, page 1.
The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht
The Effect Of Temper Carbon Nodule Number On The Physical Properties Of A Malleable Iron, William J. Ruprecht
Masters Theses
"It is known that the number of temper carbon nodules per unit volume of malleable iron has an effect on both the rate of anneal and on the resulting physical properties, but neither have been clearly worked out quantitatively. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain the effect of temper carbon nodule number on certain of the physical properties of a commercial malleable iron.
Quantitative determinations of the effect of temper carbon nodule number would be essential from a theoretical viewpoint in working out the mechanism of graphtization, and would be useful in commercial practice in showing the most …
A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky
A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky
Masters Theses
"Limestones or shaly limestones, from four stratigraphic levels in the Cherokee group (Desmoinesian series) of Missouri and Kansas, contain eight species and two varieties of fusulinid foraminifera, of which four species and two varieties are new, and one ophthalmidiid foraminiferal species (Hemigordius cf. regularis Plummer). The next to highest limestone (cap rock of the Fleming coal) is correlated with the Seahorne limestone of western Illinois, the Stonefort limestone of southern Illinois, and the Munterville limestone of Iowa. Hemigordius regularis, a limestone facies foraminifer apparently marks a correlatable interval in the Ardmore limestone. Descriptions of the fusulinids and the …
Increased Stripper Well Recovery By Means Of High Voltage Electrical Heating, John Curtin Schratwieser
Increased Stripper Well Recovery By Means Of High Voltage Electrical Heating, John Curtin Schratwieser
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this work is to investigate the possibility of using high voltage electrical heating to obtain increased stripper well production.
A substantial portion of the oil produced in the United States is obtained from stripper wells. These wells reach their economic limit when they can no longer produce sufficient oil to justify the cost of operation. In the majority of cases, however, there is still a high percentage of oil in the sand. If a production stimulus of sufficient magnitude is introduced into the formation, oil, otherwise nonproducible, may be recovered. It is the writer’s thesis that high …
A Study Of Volatility And Desulfurization Of Titanium Disulfide, Sheng-Tai Shih
A Study Of Volatility And Desulfurization Of Titanium Disulfide, Sheng-Tai Shih
Masters Theses
"The application of high vacuum for the promotion of metallurgical reactions is a comparatively new development. During the war the need for high vacuum in producing magnesium by the Pidgeon Process and in certain phases of uranium purification led to the perfection of both equipment and technique for high vacuum operations. These developments helped open the way for the entirely new field of vacuum metallurgy.
The reduction of metal oxides in vacuum has been studied by Dr. Kroll and Dr. Schlechten. They have been able to reduce many metals from their oxides under reduced pressures using carbon as a reducing …
The Depression Of Quartz In Sulphide Flotation, William Mcminn Billinghurst
The Depression Of Quartz In Sulphide Flotation, William Mcminn Billinghurst
Masters Theses
"The flotation of sulphide minerals from siliceous and calcareous gangue minerals always gives a concentrate that is contaminated to a greater or lesser degree with the gangue minerals, even though the collectors used do not show any appreciable collecting properties for the gangue minerals when they are treated alone. In an effort to reduce the amount of undesirable gangue mineral floated with the concentrate it is the practice to add arbitrary amounts of various reagents such as quebracho, alkali hydroxides, carbonates, silicates, sulphides, phosphates, fluorides, and sulphuric acid which have been found to be advantageous. The mechanism of depression is …
A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank
A Study Of An Industrial Waste Produced In The Manufacture Of Titanox, Kurt H. Frank
Masters Theses
"The problem involved in this thesis is definitely of an industrial nature in that it deals specifically with waste from a plant that is primarily concerned with the manufacture of pigment.
….the plant does have a method of recovering the soluble titanium by returning the overflow from the Dorr thickener to the digestion tanks to dilute (cut) the digestions. However, in the underflow (sewer) there is a tremendous amount of sludge that is sent directly into the nearest stream because of failure to realize something economical to do with it. This sludge contains roughly 30 per cent solids of the …

The Effect Of A Uniform Layer Of Insulation On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Ralph E. Schowalter
The Effect Of A Uniform Layer Of Insulation On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Ralph E. Schowalter
Masters Theses
"The object of this thesis is to determine by analytical methods the temperature at any time within a homogeneous semi-infinite solid protected by a uniform layer of insulation, while its one and only one plane face is subjected to a periodically fluctuating temperature. The temperature at an infinite distance within the solid is to remain constant, and the heat flow in the other two directions is to be considered negligible.
Periodically fluctuating temperatures are frequent in both nature and engineering. The surface of the earth is subjected to temperature changes which are very nearly periodic, and these changes are made …

Masters Theses
"The object of this thesis is to determine by analytical methods the temperatures within a homogeneous plate of finite thickness subjected to a constant temperature on one side and a periodically fluctuating temperature on the opposite side. The heat flow in the other two directions is considered negligible in this problem. Periodic changes of temperature are frequent in nature and in engineering. The surface of the earth is heated periodically by the sun in its daily and annual cycle and the periodic temperature changes below the surface and the question to which depth these changes are appreciable were dealt with …
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Steady-State Heat Transfer Through A Concentric Square Insulator, William Edward Simpkin
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Steady-State Heat Transfer Through A Concentric Square Insulator, William Edward Simpkin
Masters Theses
"It is the object of this thesis to express the relationship between the heat transfer through a square insulator of variable inside-outside dimension ratios, in terms of a concentric round insulator of the same inside-outside diameter ration, by means of a continuous curve. Mathematically speaking, this thesis will have a plot of a variable coefficient, cs, to be used...in terms of the ratio of the width of the outside square to the width of the inside square"--Statement of Problem, page 8.
A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Bismuth, Cadmium, Tin, And Lead, Edward Mckee Chandler
A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Bismuth, Cadmium, Tin, And Lead, Edward Mckee Chandler
Masters Theses
"Various methods have been employed for the determination of surface tension including capillary rise, drop weight, maximum bubble pressure, sessile drops on flat surfaces, sessile bubbles formed underneath flat surfaces, and the shape of pendent drops. Each method is subject to characteristic advantages and disadvantages. Only two of these will be discussed. The method of maximum bubble pressure allows the formation of a fresh surface for every bubble but does not permit the study of a given sample over a period of time. The sessile drop in direct contrast, allows the observation of the same sample over any period of …
A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann
A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to show that it is economically feasible to produce marginal gas wells in such a manner that all the gas from the edge of the field will be captured by the first row of wells. In this problem the permeability of the sand is to be variable but known, and the effects of this variable permeability on the pressure distribution, and resulting gas production, will be discussed.
In many gas fields the point at which it is generally considered unprofitable to drill new wells is well inside the boundary of the reservoir. This is …
Evaluation Of Quenching Media Using The End-Quench Hardenability Test, Subodh C. Das Gupta
Evaluation Of Quenching Media Using The End-Quench Hardenability Test, Subodh C. Das Gupta
Masters Theses
"The purpose of the thesis was to evaluate the quenching speed of different quenching media by studying their behaviour in relation to hardenabilities of steels, using the standard A.S.T.M. End-quench Test. At the outset an understanding of the term "Hardenability", so extensively used in industrial heat-treatment, is necessary, The property of a steel, of hardening on quenching to various depths beneath the surface is referred to as the 'Hardenability". It may simply be called the "susceptibility to hardening". Hardenability should be distinguished from the "Hardening capacity", which represents the magnitude of the hardness achieved. The chief factors which affect the …
The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield
The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield
Masters Theses
"The problem to be investigated in this thesis is that of periodic heat flow in a semi-infinite solid. Periodic flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid is one which is bounded by one and only one plane. This subject has received considerable attention in the field of soil temperatures, both at the surface of the earth and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to temperature changes which are nearly periodic. These temperature changes take place both daily and annually. A knowledge of these …
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media. The relaxation method was first applied to two-dimensional problems by Christopherson and Southwell, who applied it to problems in stress analysis. It was later applied to steady-state heat conduction problems by H. W. Emmons and to steady-state flow of incompressible liquids by A. A. Zwierschowski. The solutions of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media is difficult for all but the simplest boundary conditions, and impractical for …
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski
The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems in rheology. The relaxation method was first introduced by R. V. Southwell who applied it to the problem of electrical conductivity. It was later used by M. W. Emmons to solve two-dimensional heat conduction problems. The steady-state flow of fluids through porous media can be difficult or impossible by the usual analytical methods even with rather simple boundary conditions. The relaxation method promises to provide an easier method of solution and to provide a means of solving …

Development Of A Program Of Art For Grades Four Through Six, Julia Eloise Oliver
Development Of A Program Of Art For Grades Four Through Six, Julia Eloise Oliver
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
Art in the elementary school encompasses all the fields of creative expression. There should be equal emphasis on dancing, music, poetry, drama, writing, painting, construction, and the crafts. Although these forms are usually worked with separately, the underlying purpose should always be the development of the children's creative power and not the perfection of any separate skill.1
