A Study Of The Adsorption Of Radioactive Zirconium, Niobium, Cesium, And Barium On Alumina, Silica Gels And Clays, Dale Wesley Harris
A Study Of The Adsorption Of Radioactive Zirconium, Niobium, Cesium, And Barium On Alumina, Silica Gels And Clays, Dale Wesley Harris
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was: (1) search the literature and review various methods investigated for the safe storage of radioactive waste products, (2) study the possible methods for the recovery, of useful radioactive isotopes by selective adsorption, (3) perform laboratory tests to determine the capacity of various adsorbents for radioactive isotopes, (4) evaluate the data and correlate it with the findings reported in the literature, (5) make recommendations of the feasibility of using these adsorbents for removal or storage of the radioactive products, and (6) make recommendations for further investigations. The adsorption of radioactive zirconium, niobium, cesium and barium …

Liesegang Rings, Robert Edward Young
Liesegang Rings, Robert Edward Young
Masters Theses
"Although the discovery of the "Liesegang Rings" phenomenon was made sometime before 1855 little was done in the way of study or experimentation until 1896 when R. E. Liesegang discovered that if a crystal or strong solution of silver nitrate is added to a gelatin gel containing dilute potassium chromate, the resulting precipitate of silver chromate is not continuous, as might be expected, but forms a discontinuous periodic pattern. This pattern follows a geometric progression law, xn = akn, where xn is the position of the nth ring, and a and k are constants. K …
Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer
Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer
Masters Theses
"With the rapidly increasing population in the United States the adequate disposal of sewage has become one of the major technical problems which the sanitary engineer has to solve. In most areas it is no longer acceptable practice to discharge domestic sewage or industrial waste products directly into streams or lakes because of the resulting pollution of the water, which may later be used for drinking or recreational purposes. Many larger cities have, therefore, adopted some method of sewage treatment which renders such wastes safe and unobjectionable before they are discharged into a lake or stream. Most of these methods …

A Probe For Measuring Ultrasonic Pressures, Robert F. Rohrer
A Probe For Measuring Ultrasonic Pressures, Robert F. Rohrer
Masters Theses
"In the study of acoustics, the term ultrasonics is defined as those wave motions that have frequencies greater than about 20,000 cycles per second. The characteristics of a sound wave at any point in a medium can be regarded as completely defined when the amplitude, frequency, and phase of its Fourier components are known.
Sound measurements at their best are difficult. In the last few years sensitive linear microphones and electronic amplifiers have become available. Still, there are two difficulties of prime importance with their use in a sound field. First, there is the precise, absolute calibration of the equipment …

Filter Materials For Emergency Use In Diatomite Type Water Filters, Robert Wassell Mcleane
Filter Materials For Emergency Use In Diatomite Type Water Filters, Robert Wassell Mcleane
Masters Theses
"A completely different type of filter, using diatomaceous earth as the filter media, had been in use for many years for filtration of industrial liquids, however, the use of diatomaceous earth for water filtration purposes had been discouraged due to the rapid clogging of the filter material. "As late as 1930 it was reported that the very excellence of filtration with diatomite prevented its extensive use in water filtration except where complete elimination of bacteria and suspended matter is essential.”
Diatomaceous earth, however, seemed to exhibit the general properties the research groups were seeking; in the refined state it exhibited …

A Study Of Tunnel Demolition By Hasty Methods, Richard Lee Bullock
A Study Of Tunnel Demolition By Hasty Methods, Richard Lee Bullock
Masters Theses
"The use of explosives to construct obstacles which impede the enemy or close his routes of communication has long been employed by our armies. They have developed fairly effective methods for destroying bridges, setting up road craters and constructing abatis. However, one phase of obstacle construction, that of tunnel demolition, has been neglected in that no procedures or methods have been formulated which will aid in the proper destruction of tunnels.
At the present time, under the auspices of the Department of the Army, The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy is conducting a research program on tunnel demolition. The …
