The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
It is common knowledge that education consists of more than training for academic achievement. It consists of teaching whole individuals how to live effectively in their social environments. Although it is almost impossible to teach them all the skills directly they can be helped to learn through experience a great number of them for themselves. These view-points with respect to the teaching of students are held not only by a great number of educational authorities but are also part of the educational practice of a great number of teachers. Jenkins, Shacter and Bauer1 …

The Problem and Its Background
The Importance of Communication
Speech education and concomitantly, speech re-education, is becoming an increasingly important part of the curriculum of the public schools. Speech is not only a tool; it is "our greatest agent of teaching and learning."1 Therefore, the importance of adequate speech cannot be over-emphasized.
Speech can become an integrating factor in the curricula of both the elementary and secondary schools. Four elements of the curricula currently being stressed are as follows.2

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman
An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman
Masters Theses
"The demand for topographic maps from hunters, fishermen, vacationers, professional engineers etc, has been increasing with each passing year. In 1940 people bought some 700,000 copies of topographic maps. In 1946 sales had jumped to well over 2,000,000 copies. Civilian use of these maps by veterans has contributed substantially to the tremendous expansion of demand for maps since World War II. In recent years, the quality of topographic maps has been greatly improved by refinements in methods and by the use of aerial photography in map compilation. This advancement, and an ever-increasing demand from engineers, geologists, and many others for …
Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei
Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei
Masters Theses
"The usual connotation of the word rehabilitation as applied to land areas is the restoration of that land to its former efficiency. However, in the spirit of conservation that is essential to our standard of living, the word has begun to have added meaning. In the fullest concept, rehabilitation involves a study of soil characteristics and capabilities, and creation of productive uses of which the land was not capable in its original condition. The true conservationist has an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the future generations of this country. The United States Forestry Service and the United States …

Biology in the Secondary School Curriculum
There is ample evidence, both direct and tacit, that biology has justified its place in the curriculum of the secondary school.
Among the direct evidence is that stated by Heiss, Obourn, and Hoffman1 as follows:
"On the Senior High School level, general biology is well established as a tenth grade course and is usually offered as an elective for each of three years. There is a considerable body of evidence available that seems to indicate that both general science and biology are going a long way …

Chapter I
Introduction
Philosophy and Aims of Secondary Education
Recent social and economic conflicts have caused educators to examine their philosophies in the light of the needs of present-day society. The cultural view of education has given way to a growing emphasis upon the importance of functional education. Bode1 tries to account for this when he says that the "rugged individualism" based upon a policy a "laissex faire" has changed to a conception that industry must contribute to the continuous development of functional education.
The classical curriculum of yesterday does not serve the youth of today with respect to …

Masters Theses
The philosophy of modern education emphasizes the necessity of meeting the individual needs of all boys and girls Education of all the children of all the people is a phrase with which all teachers of the modern school. are familiar as being the educational birthright of every child. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the school to make pupil-activities an experience in living which is within the child's power or realization and appreciation and which will at the same time help to prepare him for a contributing adult citizenship. As a result, we find a great deal of attention being …
Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke
Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke
Masters Theses
"The mining industry has long been criticised severely because of its high rate of accident occurrence. Statistics, which, however, are not strictly comparable show that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. Figures such as these are by no means comforting to mining men. They constitute a challenge to the industry that cannot be ignored.
It must be remembered that any type of mining is more hazardous than most or the other major occupations. …

Chapter I
Introduction
The close of World War II and the return to civilian life of its large number of young men and women veterans has been a period of rapid adjustments. A large number of these adjustments have been facilitated, or at least affected, by the legislative provisions of the national government. These provisions, in turn, have been affected by the applications made of them by local communities and their agencies. One example of the local application of the aims of the veterans' benefit laws is the Veterans' Institute jointly sponsored in Dowagiac, Michigan, by the Cass Country Veterans' …

An Investigation Of The Amount And Kinds Of Material Pertaining To Safety Education To Be Found In Social Studies Textbooks, Dorothy D. Osborn
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
The Problem
In spite of the fact that safety education is acquiring a definitive place in elementary school curricula, there are still many secondary school educators who are indifferent to the need of including work in safety in the already crowded school program. However, our modern mode of living with its increased tempo and its concentration of population has intensified daily hazards to such an extent that the school must consider education for safety as part of its program. Time, effort, and money spent on education of children whose lives are to be taken in adolescence by …
Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam
Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam
Masters Theses
"The deleterious effect on human beings of dust in mine air is well-known. It is the duty of engineers, therefore, to take measures to eliminate it. It is now definitely established that of all the various types of dust encountered in mine air, silica dust is the most harmful. This dust, if inhaled over a period of time, causes the disease, silicosis, which in most countries is compensated for as a physical disability. The prevention of alleviation of this scourge is analyzed in three broad aspects: 1. If the mine air is as clean as outside atmospheric air, silicosis will …

Development Of A Proposed Course Of Study In American History For The Senior High School, Floyd Gagnon
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
I. Importance and Statement of the Problem
During the past fifty years secondary schools have made rapid advances both in enrollments and in the curriculum. In 1890 these schools were still the schools of the few, even though their enrollments had begun to grow rapidly. The high schools have continued their rapid growth until today today they present an extremely wide range of individual differences in such areas as interests, abilities and needs. Of the millions of students attending these schools today, probably six out of every seven will never attend college. It is thus apparent that …

Development Of A Program Of Art For Grades Four Through Six, Julia Eloise Oliver
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
Art in the elementary school encompasses all the fields of creative expression. There should be equal emphasis on dancing, music, poetry, drama, writing, painting, construction, and the crafts. Although these forms are usually worked with separately, the underlying purpose should always be the development of the children's creative power and not the perfection of any separate skill.1

Chapter I
Introduction
Statement of the Problem. To introduce a phase of education designed to help every individual to live healthfully and comfortably, to buy goods and services wisely, and to obtain the greatest use of those goods and services is a tremendous undertaking. Science teachers are in an excellent position to contribute better understanding of the place of the consumer in our social system. It seems logical that a textbook in this field cannot be written which will serve every community with the same degree of effectiveness because the texts are written by authors who are interested in establishing …
The Fluorine And Manganese Content Of Certain Missouri Waters, Erwin Charles Hoeman
The Fluorine And Manganese Content Of Certain Missouri Waters, Erwin Charles Hoeman
Masters Theses
"Since early in 1931, considerable attention has been brought to bear upon the subject of fluorides in drinking water supplies, following the discovery of high fluoride concentrations in waters consumed by persons afflicted with the dental defect known as mottled enamel. Analyses have been made, in the course of this study, of a comparatively large number of Missouri waters. The waters analyzed have been collected and made available by the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources. They have been secured from diverse sources and include surface waters and underground waters from different geological formations, throughout the State of Missouri"--Introduction, page …
The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell
The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell
Masters Theses
"The interest in a study of the philosophy of Shelley does not lie in the hope of discovering anything new, since there is little in anyone's belief that is without historic parallel. Rather, the sources of such an interest are first, the medium of poetry through which Shelley expressed his belief, and secondly, the transference of these beliefs into the acts of his life. It is to a consideration of the first of these that this paper is limited. Biographical facts will be used only for the elucidation of the theories expressed in his poems. Briefly, the purpose of this …
A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter
A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter
Masters Theses
"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of vegetables, water, and soils has a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A few countries, notably New Zealand and Switzerland have made a rather complete survey. In the United States, South Carolina has made the most progress in this direction.
At the present time there are no available records of vegetable and soil analysis for iodine in Missouri. Hunze determined the amount of iodine in waters in Missouri. The connection of his results with the author's results will be seen later.
The present investigation was carried out at …
A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze
A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze
Masters Theses
"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of natural waters bears a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A number of the states have analysed [sic] their water for this constituent in the development of this hypothesis. A search of the literature revealed the fact that with the exception of two instances the iodine content of Missouri water had not been determined. Since in certain regions of Missouri there is quite a prevalence of goiter, it was deemed important to determine the iodine content of Missouri waters. It was believed that such information would be a …
