Welfare Organizations Offering Assistance To Children Attending The Battle Creek Public Schools, Donald G. Whitmill

Masters Theses

As the concept of public education broadens, and as the importance of all experiences related to the formation of an individual's total self is realized, the public schools are seen in a new perspective. The public schools become one link, albeit an important link, in a complex, tightly interwoven chain of institutions, organizations, and individuals concerned with the education of the whole child.

The purpose of this study, therefore, is to compile a comprehensive listing of all agencies, institutions, and organizations offering assistance to children enrolled in the Battle Creek, Michigan, Public Schools. This study will make a brief statement …

The Background of the Problem

Review of the Literature

The educational importance of speech problems.

There are a number of justification for the existence of speech therapy in the public schools, and some of them have often been expressed in terms of the educational handicap presented by the children with speech defects. Spelling, reading, writing, and speaking often seem to be directly affected by a speech defect. Non-verbal subjects (geography, mathematics, etc.,) can also be affected because they frequently require written reports and oral recitations. In school, the children with speech defects are said to exhibit an overall retardation. Van …

Tunnel Rehabilitation, Jay C. Dotson

Masters Theses

"This paper is an outgrowth of research conducted at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy over a two year period. The purpose of the study is to assemble into one volume information that is pertinent to the rehabilitation of tunnels. Notwithstanding the voluminous size of the paper, much descriptive material necessarily has been omitted because of the far-reaching scope of tunneling practices and of the specialized fields therein. An extensive bibliography has been prepared to supplement the material that has been selected for presentation. Through consultation with tunnel men of all ranks, observations in the field, and an intensive search …

A Study of the Effect of Avoidance on Stuttering Frequency in an Adaptation Situation

I Introduction

Much of the recent research related to stuttering has been concerned with the adaptation effect. The adaptation effect in stuttering refers to the phenomenon in which the frequency of stutterer continues to read the same passage aloud a number of times. During these readings each successive passage evidences fewer stutterings until a plateau is attained.

Much of the literature has ascribed great importance to avoidance mechanisms as maintaining causal factors. These avoidance mechanisms may be generally classified in two categories which are word avoidance …

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Importance of Consumer Education

Today, the terms "consumer education" and "economic education" are used commonly in discussions of the public school curriculum. However, such discussions are often undertaken without a full understanding of the various implications of the terms. But, to define the terms specifically is considered by some leaders in the field to narrow their scope and application. This is clear in the statement by Wilson,1 namely, "To limit the application of consumer education to one segment or area of the school's work is to reduce its vitality." Thus consumer education …

The Problem and Its Background

Audio-Visual Aids

The attention of children is attracted greatly to most of the objects and events they see and hear. Hence they become aware of their environments and learn chiefly through the experiences that come to them through the visual and auditory receptors. As a result educational programs are designed to take advantages of these facts. Audio-visual aids have therefore brought reality into the classroom by making maximal use of the audio-visual senses.

The extensive use of audio-visual aids in classroom teaching is in part evident in the number of motion-picture projectors in the high …
