Finite Element Analysis Of Blade-Formation Interactions In Excavation, Osei Brown
Finite Element Analysis Of Blade-Formation Interactions In Excavation, Osei Brown
Masters Theses
"The efficiency and costs of mining operations greatly depend on the efficient design and use of excavators. The performance of these capital-intensive excavators requires thorough understanding of the physical and design factors that affect the formation-cutting tool interaction process. The current body of knowledge, based on experimental and analytical methods, provides limited understanding of these factors, which limits the accurate design and performance of excavators. The soil constitutive equations used in most of the available finite element (FE) models also fail to adequately capture the elastic and plastic behaviors of soil formations. This research initiative uses FE techniques to model …

Laboratory Implementations Of Pmsm Drive In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Applications, Amir E. Saad
Masters Theses
"Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are one of the today's most successful technologies for developing systems that require real time operation and providing additional flexibility to the designer. This research is focused on developing a control board for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) using an FPGA module. The board is configured for individual use of an FPGA, digital signal processor (DSP) or in combination to control the PMSM by generating the required Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) to the inverter in order to drive and control the speed of the PMSM. Since, the exact rotor position and speed are required …
Ultrasonic Communications System For Health Monitoring Of Hydrokinetic Turbine Blades, Andrew James Heckman
Ultrasonic Communications System For Health Monitoring Of Hydrokinetic Turbine Blades, Andrew James Heckman
Masters Theses
"A health monitoring approach is investigated for hydrokinetic turbine blade applications. In-service monitoring is critical due to the difficult environment for blade inspection and the cost of inspection downtime. Composite blade designs provide a medium for embedding sensors into the blades for in-situ health monitoring. The major challenge with in-situ health monitoring is transmission of sensor signals from the remote rotating reference frame of the blade to the system monitoring station. In the presented work, a novel system for relaying in-situ blade health measurements in hydrokinetic systems is described and demonstrated. An ultrasonic communication system is used to transmit health …
Blast And Impact Resistance Of "Long" Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Darwin Ishmael Keener
Blast And Impact Resistance Of "Long" Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Darwin Ishmael Keener
Masters Theses
"Traditional reinforced concrete is one of the most commonly used materials for protective structures. However, conventional reinforced concrete (RC) is susceptible to significant spalling (small to medium sized chunks of concrete detaching from the original member) during blast events. The force of the blast turns spalled concrete into projectiles, resulting in secondary fragmentation. Furthermore, the concrete debris makes for difficult and uncertain footing. Both phenomena endanger personnel and complicate post-blast recovery efforts. Changes need to be made to conventional reinforced concrete structures to improve their blast and impact survivability and fragmentation resistance in order to protect personnel and facilitate post-blast …
Transient Growth And Instability Control Using Iteration-Varying Filter Ilc In Flexible Dual Flywheel System, Tong Mu
Masters Theses
"In the field of precision motion control, many industrial systems have flexible modes. This is especially true for very high performance nanopositioning systems where traditional bearing systems are replaced with flexible structures in order to eliminate sliding friction. The precision motion control is difficult in flexible systems because the rapid phase transition around the resonant frequency must be accurately modeled in order to actively control the resonant motion. In order to experimentally study the effectiveness of various control algorithms on flexible systems, a dual-flywheel flexible system is constructed. The mechatronics system design strategy is presented in this thesis. The control …

The Anglicization Of Ælfric's "Passio Sancti Eadmundi Regis Et Martyris", Benjamin W. Potmesil
Masters Theses
While depicting Christian saints is certainly not unique to Old English literature, the presence of a hagiographic tradition within its corpus offers a variety of possibilities for academic investigation by editors of Old English texts. Of particular interest is JElfric's "Passio Sancti Eadmundi Regis et Martyris." This hagiography, which focuses upon an Anglo-Saxon king of the ninth century, is acknowledged by JElfric to be a translation of Abbo of Fleury' s Latin account of Edmund's death. Fortunate! y, copies of both JElfric's Old English version and Abbo's Latin original have survived to the modern day. As a result, the modern …
Book Production In The Medieval West Midlands: The Case For Organized Bookmaking, Rashelle Spear
Book Production In The Medieval West Midlands: The Case For Organized Bookmaking, Rashelle Spear
Masters Theses
My thesis project, Book Production in the West Midlands: The Case for Organized Bookmaking, takes into consideration the geographical factors of the medieval manuscripts of the West Midlands in England from the mid-fourteenth to the early fifteenth centuries. The medieval manuscript is an artifact: it is a piece of the past that, if examined carefully, will present a narrative about bookmen, bookmaking practices, and the reading public of a specific period and, in this case, a geographical area.
To discover a more coherent picture of bookmaking and the way books were prepared and received in the West Midlands, I closely …

Defending Tertullian's Orthodoxy: A Study On Third Century Christianity, Kevin Gift
Defending Tertullian's Orthodoxy: A Study On Third Century Christianity, Kevin Gift
Masters Theses
Scholars have attempted to place Tertullian into two or three distinct schools of thought. Some, such as Pope Benedict XVI, state that Tertullian turned his back on the church. Others, like Andrew McGowan, posit a more complex timeline. McGowan claims Tertullian left the church only to return at a later date. The reason for such speculation was Tertullian's interest in the Montanist, a second to third century heretical group. The goal of this study is to provide sufficient evidence that Tertullian never made the complete move to Montanism and never separated form the church of Carthage. A careful analysis of …
Severe Grace: An Examination Of The Benevolence Of The God Character In The Ten Plagues In Exodus 7:1-12:32 And In The Book Of Jonah, Paul Faust
Masters Theses
In Exodus 34:6-7, God claims to be "a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty." This claim to coexistent mercy and wrath figures as a central claim regarding the benevolence of the God character in both the Ten Plagues Narrative in Exodus 7:1-12:32 and in the Book of Jonah. This thesis examines the God character's claim to benevolence in those two passages and claims that, based upon the literary data of those primary …

Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson
Semiotics, Habitus And Music In The Transmission Of Tibetan Culture In Toronto, John Robertson
Masters Theses
This ethnographic study explores the role of music in cultural transmission in the Tibetan community of Toronto, Canada. Beginning with an integration of Peircian semiotics, Bourdieu's habitus and musical semiosis, I then identify certain non-Tibetan cultural elements being encountered by those in the Toronto community which are potentially creating cognitive structures foreign to those which have their generative principles in pre-exile Tibetan past, and the ways in which Tibetans are transmitting (to varying degrees) cognitive schemata which identify these non-Tibetan elements and protect against their appropriation. After exploring elements which are not Tibetan, I turn to those which are: a …
The Possibility Of Buddhist Virtue: A Christian Response, Jonathan Royce Pruitt
The Possibility Of Buddhist Virtue: A Christian Response, Jonathan Royce Pruitt
Masters Theses
The heart of Buddhism is ethics. This is evident even in the legendary accounts of the Buddha's life. The Buddha first encountered the problem of suffering after he finally escaped the isolation of the palace he had grown up in. His father, a powerful ruler, wanted to force his son into a life of politics and war. He had been warned that if his son was exposed to the kind of life people experience every day, a life marked by suffering, that his son would likely become a great teacher instead of a ruler. However, despite his father's best efforts, …

Nutrition And Stature: The Residents Of The Island Of Gotland, Sweden Killed In The Battle Of Wisby, 1361, Michelle A. Miller
Masters Theses
This research examines stature in order to assess the socio-economic status of Gotland, an island (and municipality) off the coast of Sweden, before the 1360's. Gotland was known as a wealthy and autonomous peasant republic although it was loosely ruled by the Swedish Crown. In 1361, the Danish Army laid siege on the seaport city of Wisby to obtain its riches. Three days after the battle, the approximately 1800 dead Gotlanders were tossed haphazardly into five common graves. Archaeological excavations took place from 1905-1930 by Bendt Thordeman, among others. The human remains were analyzed in 1937. Osteological analysis in the …
Kevin Volans' She Who Sleeps Witha Small Blanket: An Examination Of The Intentions, Reactions, Musical Influences, And Idiomatic Implications, Peter D. Breithaupt
Kevin Volans' She Who Sleeps Witha Small Blanket: An Examination Of The Intentions, Reactions, Musical Influences, And Idiomatic Implications, Peter D. Breithaupt
Masters Theses
Using and expanding upon a theoretical model for examining the meaning of music presented by ethnomusicologist Timothy Taylor, one of the leading scholars on composer Kevin Volans and his music, this research will attempt to properly position Volans' percussion solo, She Who Sleeps witha Small Blanket, composed in 1985, within Volans' African Paraphrase classification. It will also attempt to dissociate She Who Sleeps from the claims of hegemonic cultural appropriation that are attached to Volans' African Paraphrase pieces. In his model, Taylor talks about the "inseparable metatext" that surrounds a piece of music and includes the composer's intentions, the listener's …

Masters Theses
My thesis is an examination of the Cold War during the 1980s, with a focus on arms dealing and diplomacy under President Ronald Reagan from 1981-1989. I chose to write about three specific case studies based on the unique intersections of American diplomatic goals in relation to geography, the sophistication of weapons technology involved, and geopolitical considerations. The purpose of this thesis is to explain why and how the Reagan administration was able to carry out three separate arms deals, and in turn, how those deals fit into the broader, global Cold War between the United States and the Soviet …
Perception And Action: Sympathy, Charity And Ideal Communities In Eliot's Middlemarch And Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Katherine Ruth Curtis
Perception And Action: Sympathy, Charity And Ideal Communities In Eliot's Middlemarch And Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Katherine Ruth Curtis
Masters Theses
The desire to know and be known is one of the driving forces of the human condition that seems to have been repeatedly examined to the point of cliché, and yet literature has the power to continue reinventing the same question of whether humans can actually understand one another on a deep level or whether they simply learn to coexist, never breaking out of the shell of self-interested perception. In the late nineteenth century as national and smaller communities seemed to be experiencing major upheavals, Fyodor Dostoevsky and George Eliot sought on different sides of Europe to communicate how novels …
A Myth Retold: How Till We Have Faces Confirms That A Myth Is Not A Fairytale, Rachel Elizabeth Burkholder
A Myth Retold: How Till We Have Faces Confirms That A Myth Is Not A Fairytale, Rachel Elizabeth Burkholder
Masters Theses
In the last fifty years or so, the study of myth and meaning has changed into the study of fairytales, and into world of non-meaning. But because myths are classified with fairytales, their depth and somber meaning are clouded with the various happy endings of fairytales. Myths, then, are stripped and analyzed the same way as fairytales, for critics do not perceive a distinction; therefore, when discussing modern fairytale criticism the conclusions are invariably applied to myths as well. Fairytales and myth suffer greatly from the modern views; both are lost in a world of criticism set on satisfying its …
You've Got A Friend In Me: An Analysis Of Coworker Friendship Relationships, Ebonee Johnikin
You've Got A Friend In Me: An Analysis Of Coworker Friendship Relationships, Ebonee Johnikin
Masters Theses
Relationships between individuals fashion themselves in many settings and on various levels. Friendships are pivotal relationships that significantly contribute to social life, health and well-being, job satisfaction, and workplace interaction. More specifically, coworker friendship relationships are unique in their length, measurement, development, and maintenance as their formation occurs within mutually shared environments outside of family relationships. This study employed a mixed methods procedure to specifically examine these relationships. Three research questions guided the first study in an attempt to find if gender and length of friendship relationships significantly affect strength measurements of the relationship. The second study was guided by …

Tickled To Death: The Consistency Of Tones In The Arts Of Eudora Welty And Flannery O'Connor, Ramona Dale Myers
Masters Theses
Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Connor are two southern authors who are well-known among American Literature enthusiasts. Although their overall tones and styles are not often very similar, they definitely had similar expectations of and explanations for how they wrote. Not only did Welty and O'Connor impart to the literary world a variety of fictional works, they also wrote essays, letters, and introductions which provide background information about their own framework of time and place, the relational conflicts within their fiction, and the importance of figurative language in literary art. Though they were sixteen years apart in age and came from …
Educating "Gentlemen And Accomplish'd Citizens": Establishment, Enlightenment, And Colonial Virginia's Collegiate Transformation, Joshua James Owens
Educating "Gentlemen And Accomplish'd Citizens": Establishment, Enlightenment, And Colonial Virginia's Collegiate Transformation, Joshua James Owens
Masters Theses
This project traces the shift of educational, and in many ways, intellectual, hegemony from the elite College of William and Mary in the Tidewater region, to those institutions founded in the western parts of the Commonwealth. As a result of diversified people groups, religious pluralism, and influences from scattered religious revivals, people formerly considered agrarian folk, found themselves in the midst of Virginia's intellectual and education transformation. Because of the school's unshakable connections to both the English monarchy and the Established Church in Virginia, the College of William and Mary failed to incorporate a more religiously tolerant agenda. With the …

Luther's Theological Anthropology: A Decisive Break From Scholasticism, Cole Andrew Bender
Luther's Theological Anthropology: A Decisive Break From Scholasticism, Cole Andrew Bender
Masters Theses
The debate between Martin Luther and the Medieval Scholastics was one of the most significant debates in both the Reformation as a movement and the development of western Christianity as a whole. While the debate is dominantly characterized in terms of the dispute over the doctrines of sin and grace, the dispute between Luther and the medieval scholastic theologians was not simply a dispute over these two central doctrines but was a clash of entire theological systems. Moreover, the dispute over the doctrine of man forms a more logically basic and decisive point of clash, as Luther constructs his positions …
"Between Th'extremes To Move": Antithesis In Alexander Pope's Art, Kyra Elizabeth Marken
"Between Th'extremes To Move": Antithesis In Alexander Pope's Art, Kyra Elizabeth Marken
Masters Theses
Alexander Pope places antithetical terms in heroic couplets, emphasizing the relationship between opposing terms and holding them in a productive tension that prevents a misuse or perversion of each term. Such tension is made possible by the framework within which an antithesis exists: Nature serves as a whole that encompasses both parts, reinforcing the proper boundaries of each term but insisting on a relationship between them. Pope's view of antithesis determined his stance on several key eighteenth century debates and was reflected in his taste in both poetry and gardening. The external antitheses he recognized and affirmed in nature were …
Confused Or Multicultural: A Phenomenological Analysis Of The Self-Perception Of Third Culture Kids With Regard To Their Cultural Identity, Andrea Marcilio Moore
Confused Or Multicultural: A Phenomenological Analysis Of The Self-Perception Of Third Culture Kids With Regard To Their Cultural Identity, Andrea Marcilio Moore
Masters Theses
This study investigated whether Third Culture Kids, defined as people who lived in a country other than their passport country during their developmental years, perceived that their cross-cultural experiences during childhood produced in them a sense of confused cultural identity or a multicultural identity and whether they are able to successfully alternate between their two or more cultural identities and achieve intercultural communication competency in multiple cultures. Existing literature on TCKs focuses on the negative aspects of a life on the move and does not view TCKs in light of having a multicultural identity or multiple cultural identities. This study …
