A Comparative Study Of The Psalter In Light Of Qumran Cave Eleven Psalter Scroll A, Martin Homan
A Comparative Study Of The Psalter In Light Of Qumran Cave Eleven Psalter Scroll A, Martin Homan
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The major thesis of this paper is that llQPs is better understood not as a Psalter but as a liturgical psalmbook, a collection of psalms, used by the Dead Sea community. This scroll's text does not support the theory of Frank M. Cross, Jr. on local text types, but the text does have importance for textual criticism of the Old Testament. llQPs supports an understanding of an earlier development of the canon of the Old Testament. This thesis will be developed in the subsequent chapters.

Old Testament Quotations In John's Gospel, Roger Humann
Old Testament Quotations In John's Gospel, Roger Humann
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The study of these quotations can serve us in several ways. It can increase our appreciation and understanding of the Old Testament as we observe the way in which the various New Testament writers understood and applied the Old Testament texts to the situation of the New. Furthermore, the theological intent of a New Testament writer may be highlighted by the manner in which he quotes the Old. Answers to questions relating to the purpose, structure, background, and historicity of a New Testament Gospel, for instance, may be informed by a study of the evangelist's use of the Old Testament.
Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie
Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The scope of this thesis will be limited to figures of words or expressions as defined by Terry and Robertson.17 We purposely omit so-called figures of thought (for example, allegory, simile, parallel) since these figures are usually covered adequately in many commentaries and because their inclusion would make this thesis needlessly lengthy.
Echoes Of Pauline Concepts In The Speech At Antioch, Paul E. Deterding
Echoes Of Pauline Concepts In The Speech At Antioch, Paul E. Deterding
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The present study will examine the speech of Acts 13 in view of these denials of its genuineness. The vocabulary, methodology, and theological concepts of this address will be compared with the thirteen letters Of Paul. This comparison will center on five major topics: The use of the Old Testament, the use of rabbinic ideas and procedures, the ministry of John the Baptizer, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and the teaching of justification. Finally, we will review the arguments against the authenticity of the speech at Antioch in light of the findings of this study in order to …
The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong
The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis deals with neither the meaning of the terms nor with the exegesis of the passages in which these terms are found. Nor shall we attempt to re-interpret or relate what Paul said about "cosmic powers" to the modern thought-forms. The purpose of this work is rather to examine, first of all, the terms employed by Paul to describe the forces of evil in the light of his own Jewish background. We shall not be concerned so much with the question: What does Paul mean? as with the query: Where did Paul get the terms and ideas for what …
The Speech Of James In Acts 15, Ronald Jones
The Speech Of James In Acts 15, Ronald Jones
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
As one considers the quotation from Amos in Acts 15:16-18, he discovers that the text in Acts 15 differs from the text in the Septuagint , and that the Old Testament Greek text, in turn, differs radically from the Hebrew text. An explanation for the differing readings may depend on Qumran materials and rabbinic literature, in both of which the quotation from Amos occurs in Messianic contexts.
The decree in Acts 15:20 also raises questions, since some commentators have argued for an original reading with two or three prohibitions instead of the four as given in the Eberhard. Nestle text. …
The Concept Of Marriage As Found In Doctrine And Covenants, Section 132:1-33 And Matt. 19:3-8 And 22:23-30: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Biblical Teachings, Thomas Burton
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose in writing this thesis is to attempt to objectively clarify and evaluate the Latter-day- Saint interpretation and application of the doctrinal revelation of marriage for eternity to determine whether it is biblical. The thesis will be divided into three major parts: Part I: The Latter-day Saint Concept of Marriage for Eternity as Derived From Doctrine and Covenants 132:1-33 and Matt. 19:3-8 and 22:23-30: Part II, The Biblical Concept of Marriage Based on Matt. 19:3-8 and 22:23-30; and Part III: A Comparison and Evaluation: of Latter-day Saint and Biblical Concepts of Marriage and Its State After Death.
A Contemporary Application Of The Parables Of Growth, Victor Raj
A Contemporary Application Of The Parables Of Growth, Victor Raj
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of our study is to look at the canonical text of the four parables of growth; namely, the Sower, the Mustard Seed, the Weeds among the Wheat, and the Automatic Action of the Soil. We will do so in order to interpret them for their application for us today. The second chapter is devoted to a textual exposition of these parables. In the third chapter some basic motifs from the parables of growth receive some further discussion with a view to finding the significance of these parables for the growth of the Church.
The point of the fourth …

The Pneuma As Authority And Moving Force In Paul, With Special Reference To 2 Corinthians 3:17, Roger Beese
The Pneuma As Authority And Moving Force In Paul, With Special Reference To 2 Corinthians 3:17, Roger Beese
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis proposes to discuss the pneuma theology of St. Paul on the basis of the much disputed seventeenth verse of 2 Corinthians 3 and related passages. The study will concentrate on the role of pneuma as authority and moving force in the Pauline congregation. The word pneuma is used frequently in Paul's letters, particularly in the Pillar Epistles, in a variety of contexts. Pneuma is unquestionably a key concept in Pauline theology. A study of Paul's pneuma theology, then, is a vital one, for it strikes close to the heart of his entire theological thinking. The centrality of his …
Λοτική Λατρειά The Dedication Of The Body To The Will Of God, Aaron L. Uitti
Λοτική Λατρειά The Dedication Of The Body To The Will Of God, Aaron L. Uitti
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this study is to ascertain what Paul, means by the phrase λοδικὴ λατρεία and what its implications are for the worshiping Christian community. This phrase occurs only once in Paul, but at an important transitional point in the epistle to the Romans (12:1). Nowhere else in the New Testament or the Greek translation of the Old Testament does this phrase appear. In fact the combination logikȇ latreia did not appear in any of the literature or material investigated.

The Anointing At Bethany In The Fourth Gospel, James Russell Pierce
The Anointing At Bethany In The Fourth Gospel, James Russell Pierce
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
In addition to the introductions at 11:1 and 12:1, there are five others which include references to other parts of the Fourth Gospel. Our purpose in reviewing them is to find a pattern which may suggest why John felt these reminders necessary, hoping thereby to find a basis for interpreting his intention as he related the anointing at Bethany. This study will be limited to references in introductions, excluding phrases which John includes here and there to add information in the midst of a pericope (for example, that Philip was from Bethsaida, 12:21).
The Relationship Of Amos To The Cult, Alfred John Johnson
The Relationship Of Amos To The Cult, Alfred John Johnson
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis will examine the prophecy of Amos and attempt to show that Amos was not inimical toward the cult. Through an investigation of the background and vocation of Amos it will be shown that he did not live a life of isolation, but that he had frequent intercourse with his countrymen. Through an examination of the speech forms used by Amos, it will be shown that he had a broad acquaintance with the literary arts and skills of his culture and an intimate knowledge of the cultic system of the religion of Israel.
Irony, And Other Literary Techniques, In The Fourth Gospel, Robert O. Neff Jr
Irony, And Other Literary Techniques, In The Fourth Gospel, Robert O. Neff Jr
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper deals with Johannine-Synoptic differences. Since the problem is multifarious, this paper will be limited to basic dissimilarities and how they might be resolved. Toward this end an understanding of John’s use of irony, and other literary techniques, might help.
The Resurrection Faith Of The Maccabean Martyrs, Harold N. Wendt
The Resurrection Faith Of The Maccabean Martyrs, Harold N. Wendt
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is to undertake a study of the resurrection faith of the Maccabean martyrs. In so doing, it will study two particu1ar works, the canonical book of Daniel and the apocryphal book of Second Maccabees.
By "resurrection" is meant that act of God by which He calls forth the bodies of the dead and restores them to life again. This term implies something different from what is usually understood by such concepts as the immortality of the soul, translation and assumption.
The thesis will consider the nature of the faith embraced by these martyrs with regard to the following; …
The Implications Of The Cross For The Invisible Powers And The State Against The Background Of 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 And Colossians 1:15-20, Dean Zweck
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Our aim in this study is to discover the implications of the cross for the invisible powers and the State against the background of two Pauline passages which in our opinion are very relevant to the topic. In the first part of this study we shall trace the history of the discussion on invisible powers and the State in this century. Then we shall turn back the clock many centuries am examine the background relevant to our topic. With this general introduction and background material in mind, our task shall be to examine what each of the two passages that …
Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong
Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The eschatology of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 has been a perennial problem for biblical interpreters. The language of the chapter is very different from that which Paul uses in his other epistles. He exhorts the Thessalonians not to be excited about the coming of the day of the Lord, "for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed …" (verse 3). When the appears, he will exalt himself "against every so-called god or object of worship, so that be takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God" …
Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. The inquiry seeks to determine whether or not Israel had a mission to the gentile nations during the Old Testament period, the nature of that mission, and the ways in which that mission was to be carried out. An attempt will also be made to discern the difference in emphasis in the three different periods and how the situations …
Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim
Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Stephen's speech leaves us with many questions. Our study will help to answer some of these questions. Chapter One of this study deals with some background issues, i.e., Who Stephen is among the Seven Deacons, and Who the Hellenists are, whose complaint threatened the unity and harmony of the church in Jerusalem. Chapter Two seeks to determine how the reporting of speech in ancient literature is to be understood. This is an attempt to defend the authenticity, and thus, the reliability of the ancient records of various speeches. The third chapter, the main body of the work, handles the issues …

An Exegetical Study Of Romans 16:17-20 In Light Of Its Use In The Missouri Synod During The Last Thirty Years For The Question Of Fellowship, Roger P. Frobe
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is designed to investigate the use to which Rom. 16:17-20 has been put in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, particularly within the last thirty years. At the same time this dissertation offers an objective and independent interpretation of that pericope. The purpose of the study is not merely to add one more interpretation of Rom. 16:17-20. Instead, it is an attempt to examine the passage in light of its use in the Missouri Synod in the past. Simply stated our intent has been to provide a setting for the proper use of Rom. 16:17-20 in contemporary American discussions on …
Community Discipline: Saint Paul And Qumran: An Exegetical Study Of Paul's Principles Of Church Discipline Based On An Investigation Of Qumran And Such Pauline Materials As Relate To First Corinthians 5:1-5, Harold Louis Kitzmann
Community Discipline: Saint Paul And Qumran: An Exegetical Study Of Paul's Principles Of Church Discipline Based On An Investigation Of Qumran And Such Pauline Materials As Relate To First Corinthians 5:1-5, Harold Louis Kitzmann
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Discipline problems arose early in the church. A case of flagrant immorality at Corinth prompted Pau1 to counsel the congregation there to meet in solemn assembly and to “excommunicate” the offender. The purpose of this study is to examine the subject of discipline as treated in Paul’s letters, particularly the instance related in 1 Cor. 5:1-5, against the background of Qumran. It is an attempt to establish the New Testament principles governing the church in its internal relations as the fellowship or community of God's "called out people" as compared with practices described in the Dead Sea Scrolls. On the …

The Church In Your House- A Study Into The Form And Function Of The Primitive Church, Paul Biegner
The Church In Your House- A Study Into The Form And Function Of The Primitive Church, Paul Biegner
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
A search for new forms of church and new patterns of ministry and mission has occupied parts of the church in the western world for the past ten years or so. Both the concern for the doctrine of the church and for the cutting edge of mission dominate the search for new forms. That search has yielded varied patterns, many of which utilize face-to-face contact in smaller groups to meet the challenges of mass-man in a depersonalized society. Some of these new forms of church and church ministry and mission have claimed a relationship to “the church in your house”.
∑Γη Χpi∑Tω - Pauline Eschatology In Philippians 1:23, John G. Eiwen
∑Γη Χpi∑Tω - Pauline Eschatology In Philippians 1:23, John G. Eiwen
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis will be limited to the consideration of the immediate state of the believer after his death as this is illuminated by St. Paul in Phil. 1:23. Other Pauline passages will be studied as they relate to the verse in question. There will be no attempt to determine the state of the unbeliever since Paul does not treat this question.
The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper
The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The present study is an attempt to investigate, in the work of one of the theologians primarily responsible for the contemporary interest in hermeneutical problems, the role that the Law-Gospel Polarity plays in the process of hermeneutics. Gerhard Ebeling, a one-time student of Rudolf Bultmann whose work was first introduced to American theologians by James M. Robinson under the label, “The Hew Hermeneutic,” was chosen as the subject of this investigation because of the extensive use that he makes of the distinction between the Law and the Gospel, and because of his frequent appeals to, and his many studies in, …

Henotẽs:Pauls Term For Christian Unityin Ephesians 4:3 And 4:13, John Edward Helmke
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
We believe that in this light the almost casual treatment that henotẽs has received is a distressing situation, commanding our attention and challenging our best efforts. The purpose of this study paper is to help the church continue in its mission to the world by- seeking to better understand that mission in the light of henotẽs.

This study comprises an examination of sermonic material for clues to the plight of man. Initially the research involves an assessment of the signs of man's plight and places these signs into significant categories of man's existence. After locating and classifying the plight of man, the analysis shifts to the meaning of the plight of man in all of the plight's dimensions. After summarizing various aspects of man's plight and its meaning, the analysis moves to detect the implications of plight and meaning for man and for the preaching task. Finally, several areas for further study are suggested on the …
