The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones May 1957

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the study of the New Testament Kerygma we can recognize that the life, death, resurrection, and exaltation are one great act of God by which He made the New Covenant. However in our study of these events we separate them for convenience. So in our study of the Old Covenant we can recognize that the deliverance, giving of the Law, ratification of the Covenant, and conquest of Canaan are one great act of God by which He made the Old Covenant. But here too we separated these events for the purpose of clarity in investigating them. And for want …

The Philosophical And Religious Background Of Athens As Reflected In The Areopagus Speech Of Paul, Carl Querbach Jun 1956

The Philosophical And Religious Background Of Athens As Reflected In The Areopagus Speech Of Paul, Carl Querbach

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The fundamental purpose of this thesis is twofold. In The first place, it intends to gauge as accurately as possible the extent and precise context of Paul’s employment of the philosophical and religious thought of Athens in his Areopagus address. Secondly, it intends to determine precisely what his goal was and how his method of approach was determined both by that aim and by the nature of his audience’s thought. In other words, this study will attempt to Show both which facets of Stoic, Epicurean and religious thought are reflected in the speech, and how Paul makes use of those …

With Christ The Union Of The Christian With Christ As Expressed By St Paul, Harold Scheibert Jun 1956

With Christ The Union Of The Christian With Christ As Expressed By St Paul, Harold Scheibert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Suffering servant is a strange and fluid Old Testament figure. Sometimes it is clear that the Messiah is meant, but at other times the Servant apparently is Israel herself or the faithful Remnant. Thus there is a close connection and sometimes almost an identification between the Suffering Servant and Israel. There are many other starting points that we could find to examine the doctrine of the union with Christ, but in this thesis we are limiting ourselves to St. Paul’s statements using the preposition σν́ν.

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange Jun 1956

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It might be well to emphasize the fact that this is an exegetical study of sanctification; therefore sanctification as defined in this paper may or may not always agree with the other uses of sanctification in different theological disciplines.

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller Jun 1956

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The original intention was to undertake an exegetical investigation of this passage. However, it soon became obvious that, to understand the thought of the Apostle, it is impossible to confine one’s study to a simple passage. And so, though the original intention continued to remain the foremost concern, the problem assumed a broader scope, as the title of thesis indicates. Very naturally therefore, references to baptismal sayings outside the Pauline corpus lie outside the scope of this thesis, inasmuch as the purpose of the investigation is to ascertain the mind of Paul with regard to this sacrament.

The Witness Of God With Special Reference To Hebrews 11:2, Paul Schuessler Jun 1955

The Witness Of God With Special Reference To Hebrews 11:2, Paul Schuessler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Since a study of the divine witness promises a clearer understanding of God and His ways and a more intensive penetration of Scripture, the following analysis of Hb 11:2 and a series of summarizing propositions are offered together with such philological and theological support as is available.

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder Jun 1955

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis we want to study the concept of .fulfilment as found in the New Testament. John Marsh points out the importance of this concept when he says: “To an age which has inherited the new and refined instruments of historical study which were developed in the nineteenth century., it has become very difficult to give any intellectual, as distinct from devotional or religious, context to the concept of ‘fulfilment’ as the Bible understands it.

The Reward Concept In The Synoptic Gospels, Robert Mayer Jun 1955

The Reward Concept In The Synoptic Gospels, Robert Mayer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Concept Of ’Σδσ’Σ In The Book Of Acts, Norbert Streufert Jun 1954

The Concept Of ’Σδσ’Σ In The Book Of Acts, Norbert Streufert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis is to examine the Old Testament and rabbinic literature to see what role, if any, they played in the formation of the ’σδσ’ς concept of Acts. The Septuagint in particular deserves attention since it held such an important position in the Apostolic Church and so largely affected the writers of the New Testament. As H. B. Swete remarks, the New Testament writers not only were familiar with the Septuagint; but were saturated with its thought and vocabulary.

The Meaning Of Philippians 2:6, William Beck Jun 1954

The Meaning Of Philippians 2:6, William Beck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My aim was to find out what the text means. Some of the conclusions differ from the doctrinal statements of men whom I respect very highly. I made no special effort to uphold Lutheran doctrine. It was therefore reassuring to see how the text, freed of all encumbrances, strands there in its simple doctrinal glory.

The Meaning Of The Term Βαειλεια Τοτ Οεοτ In The Parables, Marvin Middendorf Jun 1954

The Meaning Of The Term Βαειλεια Τοτ Οεοτ In The Parables, Marvin Middendorf

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The term “kingdom of God” plays a prominent part in the Christian vocabulary. Scarcely a sermon is preached without employing this phrase and scarcely a prayer is uttered that does not use this phrase in praise, thanksgiving, petition. That it an essential part of the New Testament is not doubted.

The Person And Work Of The Holy Spirit Implicit In The Proclamation Of John The Baptist, Walter Rosin Jun 1954

The Person And Work Of The Holy Spirit Implicit In The Proclamation Of John The Baptist, Walter Rosin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary purpose of .this thesis will not; be to determine the correct interpretation of this entire phrase, but to determine what the hearers of John understood when he announced “He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” A secondary purpose of this thesis will be to arrive at a clearer understanding of the concept; of the Holy Spirit.

The New Testament Attitude Toward Government, David Koenig Jun 1953

The New Testament Attitude Toward Government, David Koenig

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

One such form of life in the secular world is that of government. Practically every Christian, like other individuals, is a citizen--or at least an inhabitant--of some particular nation. And every nation has some form of government by which the inhabitants are controlled. These forms may vary widely, from a total dictatorship or monarchy to a thorough-going democracy; from a highly-organized state which concerns itself with even the minute matters of individual life to a loose organization whose only concern is the preservation of outward order. No matter what the form, some relationship must be assumed by individual Christians toward …

The Employment Of Textual-Critical Methods And Principles By The Revison Committee, E George Krause Jun 1953

The Employment Of Textual-Critical Methods And Principles By The Revison Committee, E George Krause

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis, then we shall first review the problem of textual criticism, with its implications for the translator. In such a situation the reviser or translator must have certain criteria to guide him.

Natural Law And The New Testament, Robert Hoeferkamp Jun 1952

Natural Law And The New Testament, Robert Hoeferkamp

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper will attempt to investigate elements of Natural Law which are generally alleged to appear in the New Testament. Thus a historical discussion of Natural Law and the indication of the importance of the topic for current theological discussion are in order.

New Testament Preaching- An Analysis Of Its Character And Purpose On The Basis Of Word Studies Of Αγγελλω And Its Compounds And Κηρυσσω, Bernhard Kurzweg Jun 1952

New Testament Preaching- An Analysis Of Its Character And Purpose On The Basis Of Word Studies Of Αγγελλω And Its Compounds And Κηρυσσω, Bernhard Kurzweg

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Since this study is based merely based on two of the verbs used in the New Testament to describe Christian preaching, it does not afford a basis for comparison in regard to all preaching. We shall be describing and comparing Apostolic preaching and present-day preaching only in a restricted area.

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel Jun 1951

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The words of institution for the Lord's Supper can be taken absolutely literally. The only words which require any interpretation are “body” and “blood." These can be interpreted only in the light of the concept of "communion.” On the basis of the text and in harmony with the Lutheran confessions this leads to three points, often called the Shibboleths of the doctrine.

The Meaning And Significance Of The Suffering And Death Of Christ As Found In I Peter, Norman Brauer Jun 1951

The Meaning And Significance Of The Suffering And Death Of Christ As Found In I Peter, Norman Brauer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper is an exegetical study of the eight passages in this Epistle which have a. reference to the blood, suffering, or sacrifice of Christ. The purpose of this thesis is to arrive at an understanding of the meaning and significance of the work of Christ according to Peter’s First Epistle. In chapters two, three, and four the writer will examine particularly those passages which state the doctrinal viewpoint of Peter concerning the suffering and death of Christ. In the remaining three chapters the writer will endeavor to determine the significance that the Apostle places upon the passion of Christ; …

The New Testament Concept Of The Son Of Man, John Fritz Jun 1950

The New Testament Concept Of The Son Of Man, John Fritz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The term “Son of Man" was Jesus ‘favorite self-designation. It occurs approximately eighty times in the Gospel records. Though Jesus accepted as appropriate titles for Himself such terms as Messiah, Son of David, the Christ, the Son of God, He at times expressly called Himself the Son of Man in replying to those, who addressed Him with some other title (John 1:49 ,51; Matthew 18: 19, 20).

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk Jun 1950

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

During the past few years and months, especially during the time the new Zionist state of Israel was being formed, much discussion has arisen regarding an age-old problem of an age-old people. Where do these people who have been the modern heirs of a tradition some thousands of years old fit into present-day civilization? However, for the Church, these external and secular happenings have served as a reminder of an even greater problem, namely, where does this people fit in spiritually? What is to happen to this tribe from which the Redeemer Himself stemmed? And this is no new problem, …

The Concept Of Prophet In New Testament, Emil Mach Jun 1949

The Concept Of Prophet In New Testament, Emil Mach

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the German universities the prophets were looked upon as “mad fellows”. Indeed any idea of God revealing Himself to men was frowned upon and I was left with doubts. The material of this thesis has convinced me that God takes great care to reveal Himself to man and that we may place our trust in His revelation of Himself. So, by this work, my whole Christian faith has been more firmly established.

In Christ Jesus An Approach To The Ε̂ŴΜα Τoȗ Χειδτοȗ Concept Through The Pauline Use Of The E’V Xeidtω̑ Formula, Walter Bartling May 1949

In Christ Jesus An Approach To The Ε̂ŴΜα Τoȗ Χειδτοȗ Concept Through The Pauline Use Of The E’V Xeidtω̑ Formula, Walter Bartling

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

All modern studies of' the ’ΕνΧειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of Adolf Deissmann, which appeared in 1892. It is hardly possible to overestimate the influence this book has had upon research in Pauline theology, not only upon study of the problem to which it is immediately directed, but especially also upon inquiries into the nature of Pauline "mysticism". Its influence on interpreters of the δ̂wμαΧειδτοȗ concept will become apparent as we proceed somewhat atlength to present Deissmann’s argument. All modern studies of' the ’Εν Χειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of …

St Paul's Ethical Terminology, Arthur Vincent May 1949

St Paul's Ethical Terminology, Arthur Vincent

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because of the importance of Paul as missionary and as a teacher of doctrine and ethics and the past neglect of Pauline ethics; along with the changing conditions demand a constant study of the eternal principles of right and wrong.

An Interpretation Of The Epistle Of St. Jude, William Hassold May 1949

An Interpretation Of The Epistle Of St. Jude, William Hassold

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Luther's attitude towards the letter of Jude, as he himself says, was influenced by three factors: 1) its close resemblance to part of 2 Peter; 2) its use of material found nowhere else in Scripture; 3) its rejection by many of the Church fathers. We shall have to consider each of these matters in formulating our opinion of the letter of Jude.

The Typological Method Of Biblical Interpretation: An Investigation, Willard Burce May 1949

The Typological Method Of Biblical Interpretation: An Investigation, Willard Burce

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It was the original object of this study to investigate these three questions. The subject is very large, however. It. seems more salutary to deal for the first with the history of typology and to see how exegetes of the Church down through the years have faced the problems of understanding and discussing types.

The Authorship Of The Fourth Gospel In Present-Day Thought, Walter Heyne May 1949

The Authorship Of The Fourth Gospel In Present-Day Thought, Walter Heyne

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It ls the purpose of this paper to explore recent literature to ascertain the prevailing views on this subject. The available English and German literature which has appeared since approximately 1915 has been surveyed to determine mainly this one thing: What is the current thinking on the subject of the authorship of John’s Gospel? In this sense, this is largely a statistical study, and no particular effort has been made to distinguish between the authority and scholarship of those whose opinion are presented. The date 1915 was selected as the terminus a quo since the second decade of our century …

The Brethren Of The Lord And Their Relation To Jesus, Norman Wangerin May 1949

The Brethren Of The Lord And Their Relation To Jesus, Norman Wangerin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is my purpose to examine these various hypotheses in the light of tradition and Scripture. Thus the theories themselves will first be discussed briefly. Next they will be examined on the basis of the references to this problem in the literature of the early Church. Finally, the Scripture passages which have a bearing on the subject will be taken up. The correct interpretation of these passages is after all the real key to the problem.

The Ending Of St Mark's Gospel A Study In Textual Criticism, Henry Hamann May 1949

The Ending Of St Mark's Gospel A Study In Textual Criticism, Henry Hamann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The writer, rather immodestly it may be held, can -not accept the principles enunciated by WH .and accepted by many textual critics since, and accordingly a rather large section of the present study is given over to a critical-analysis of the principles of WH and the formulation of· other critical principles, which form the foundation upon which the real work is raised.

The Beatitudes, Wilbur May May 1948

The Beatitudes, Wilbur May

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The goal of this thesis is to obtain a deeper insight into the true meaning of the Beatitudes as spoken by Christ almost two thousand years ago. We are fully aware of the fact that words are merely symbols for thoughts. However, the words are the means by which we grasp the thoughts which the speaker wished to give us. Therefore, we feel that perhaps the ·best method to obtain this deeper insight is by examining the individual words which Christ used. The immediate purpose of this examination of the individual words is to understand the individual words with the …

Whether St. Luke Used The Gospel Of St. Paul In The Composition Of His Own, Otto Hintze Jr May 1948

Whether St. Luke Used The Gospel Of St. Paul In The Composition Of His Own, Otto Hintze Jr

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The many narratives of which Luke speaks have intrigued inquisitive minds no end. As a result, they have been the object of an enormous amount of research. What was the precise nature of these writings? Are they extant? Did Luke have them at his disposal and peruse them? Did he embody them in his Gospel in any way? Such are a few of the questions which arise out of the scanty information furnished by Luke's preface.
