Preparation For Discipleship- Discipleship In Jesus' Farewell Discourses, St John13-17, L Dean Hempelmann
Preparation For Discipleship- Discipleship In Jesus' Farewell Discourses, St John13-17, L Dean Hempelmann
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The meaning of discipleship is significant for the church today. As the world changes, the church and the members of the church change, and it becomes necessary for the church to renew her churchliness. In order to be the church, the church must know the meaning of discipleship. If the church wants to understand her divine duty she must know the meaning of discipleship. This thesis presents an investigation of the meaning of discipleship in Jesus' farewell discourses in the Gospel according to St. John (chapters 13-17).
Tongues And Prophecy--A Comparative Study In Charismata, Anthony Palma
Tongues And Prophecy--A Comparative Study In Charismata, Anthony Palma
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
A link between the two charismata of prophecy and glossolalia is undeniable and provides the basis for a study and comparison of these two "utterance gifts." It is the primary purpose of this paper to explore the relationship of these two gifts to each other.
The Righteousness Of Job, Bruce Malchow
The Righteousness Of Job, Bruce Malchow
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Job contends emphatically that he is righteous. His righteousness is one of the key points in the Book of Job, because Job builds his whole argument against Eloah upon the fact that God should not be punishing a righteous man. But what does Job mean when he says that he is righteous? It is commonly assumed that he is making a moral assertion. Job's three friends are the first to make this assumption. They berate Job for the impurity and scandalousness of his life. Subsequent interpreters of the Book of Job concur with the friends' evaluation of Job's righteousness. They …
Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud
Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This present study is concerned only with one particular relationship: that between a name and the word-play associated with it. Thus it is the structure of individual passages which is examined while the relationship of these passages to their literary units or oral background plays a secondary role. This then is not form analysis in the strict sense, though it is closer to this method than to any other.
The Prophectic Protest: Form And Funtion, Henry Rowold
The Prophectic Protest: Form And Funtion, Henry Rowold
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
What is true here of von Rad seems to be true generally of biblical scholarship; to the writer's knowledge, there has been no significant attempt to isolate the various prophetic protests and to study them as a literary or theological unity. Most of the concern has centered in Jeremiah's protests. Upon further study it has impressed the writer that a correlated study of all prophetic protest may provide a helpful tool in understanding the office of the prophet. It is from this perspective that the present study of prophetic protest was pursued and is now offered.
The Use Of The Term Ο̋Νομα In The Gospel According To Matthew, Alvin Young
The Use Of The Term Ο̋Νομα In The Gospel According To Matthew, Alvin Young
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is an inquiry into the use of ο̋νομα in the Gospel According to Matthew. It seeks to trace the background of the term ο̋νομα and show the theological heritage that it possesses. With this background in mind, ο̋νομα has been studied within Matthew with special concern for its use within prepositional phrases.
This study seeks to answer certain questions. For example: What is the background of ο̋νομα for its theological meaning? How does Matthew use the background material to suit his purposes and the meaning of his gospel? Does Matthew use ο̋νομα differently from the background sources? Is …
The Relationship Between Law And Sin In Romans 7, Kenneth Mangelsdorf
The Relationship Between Law And Sin In Romans 7, Kenneth Mangelsdorf
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is the purpose of this thesis to develop an answer to the question, ''What is the relationship between law and sin in Romans 7?" It is important to note that this inquiry is based on two presuppositions. The first is that there really is a relationship between law and sin in Romans 7. The second is that Romans 7 can validly be studied in the light of that relationship. The second assumption is based on the first and is more significant, because it determines the method to be used in answering the problem to which this thesis proposes to …
The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese
The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is an investigation of the figure of marriage in Ephesians 5:21-33. The specific problem is to determine whether or not in these verses the figure exists as it does throughout Scripture. Thus this discussion necessitates establishing what characteristics, if any, are common to the figure of marriage in the Old Testament and New Testament. The ultimate question that results is are Christ and the Church regarded as husband and wife in these verses?" The answer will be determined in these verses by specific statements to that effect or by the description of the relationship between Christ and the …
The Concept Of "Oneness" In The Fourth Gospel, Leon Gilbertson
The Concept Of "Oneness" In The Fourth Gospel, Leon Gilbertson
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is a study of the numeral ει’̂ς, μία, έν in the Gospel of John. At the heart of the study was the desire to come to an understanding of the oneness of the church (John 17). It was not possible, however, to proceed directly to such an interpretation. As the second chapter will show, the word for one (έν) in John 17:11, 21, 22, 23 is normally an adjective but in John 17 it is used as a substantive. The full meaning of what the substantive describes can be determined only on the basis of a study of …
Peter As Leader Among The Apostles, Donald Miesner
Peter As Leader Among The Apostles, Donald Miesner
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
In my study I was interested in determining whether or not Peter was presented as leader among the apostles by Christ, by Peter himself, by the other apostles, and by references throughout the New Testament. Of further interest was the discovery of the particular areas in which Peter expressed his leadership and the extent to which this leadership applied. I was eager to learn when in Peter's career his leadership role was especially ·prominent. Finally, it was of interest to note what limitations, if any, there were on Peter's leadership among the apostles.
The Lamb Of God --An Interpretation Of John 1:29, Roy Rinehard
The Lamb Of God --An Interpretation Of John 1:29, Roy Rinehard
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The key passage in the New Testament in which Christ is called "Lamb of God" is John 1:29. Here we are told that John the Baptist sees Jesus approaching him and then calls attention to Him by means of this designation. Exactly what does this term mean? This study attempts to take a careful look at John 1:29 and other passages of the New Testament which refer to our Lord as "Lamb" in an effort to determine its meaning.
Ezekiel's Locale (Palestine Or Babylon Or Both) With The Implications Of The Same On His Message, Roger Janke
Ezekiel's Locale (Palestine Or Babylon Or Both) With The Implications Of The Same On His Message, Roger Janke
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The study of the book of Ezekiel is full of many problems. In limiting ourselves to a study of his locale, it is necessary to declare our position in other areas of Ezekielian research. On the basis of the book's autobiographical nature, and its consistent use of planned sequence, visions, characteristic phrases, and language peculiarities throughout the book, we are assuming its essential unity. Chapters 2-24 present the evidence of Israel's sin and its punishment, while chapters 25-48 proclaim Israel's restoration. We regard the many attempts to assign large sections of the book to later writers as misleading. Our first …
The Relationship Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ To His Work Of Reconcilliation In The Light Of The Covenant Idea, Kenneth Block
The Relationship Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ To His Work Of Reconcilliation In The Light Of The Covenant Idea, Kenneth Block
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The problem which this thesis investigates is the relationship of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to His work of reconciliation. The study of this .question is significant because the relationship of these two articles of faith has central importance in God's redemptive acts of salvation.
The author contends that the relationship between resurrection and reconciliation can be seen in the key idea of a covenant. The concept of a covenant is significant in the Old Testament. The Mosaic covenant is the most explicit example. The New Testament writers were thoroughly imbued with Old Testament concepts. To understand the import of …
The Text Of The Johanine Espistles: A Critical Study, Marlin Mentz
The Text Of The Johanine Espistles: A Critical Study, Marlin Mentz
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The paper has a three-fold objective:
l. To weigh and discuss the textual problems of the Johannine epistles;
2. To see if the MSS collated fall into definite family groups as is known in the Gospels and Von Soden's classification;
3. To presents composite collation of all the variants from the Textus Receptus (Oxford Edition 1873).
Eschatology Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul Andrews
Eschatology Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul Andrews
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The approach adopted for this study was to select certain temporal references in the epistle and to examine them in the light of the events or periods of time to which they refer. The purpose of the approach was to gain an understanding, in so far as it i3 possible, of the concept of time which underlies the writing of Hebrews. Though some of the references seem casual or unclear, a rather distinct picture of the author’s chronological framework emerges when the texts are examined more closely and related to one another.
Christ As Creator: A Theology From Paul For Racial Integration In The Church Based Especially On Colossians 1:15-20, Herbert Schulze
Christ As Creator: A Theology From Paul For Racial Integration In The Church Based Especially On Colossians 1:15-20, Herbert Schulze
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this thesis is to relate a New Testament theology to the explosive issue of race relations in the world today. If the Church of Christ is to be the light and leaven of the world, then it is safe to say that she should bear much responsibility for alleviating the current racial unrest. The writer will operate primarily in the field of exegetical theology, with complementary references to the fields of dogmatic and practical theology.
The Relationship Of ‘Ο Νομοε To The Life Of The Christian According To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans, Burton Everist
The Relationship Of ‘Ο Νομοε To The Life Of The Christian According To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans, Burton Everist
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
What relationship the law has for the Christian is no new problem for the Church. Moses, Christ, and Paul dealt with the issue, yet this enigma confronted theologians of the past and continues to confront theologians today. Among contemporary Lutheran theologians the question has revolved around the propriety of using the law as a guide for the Christian's life: the so-called "third use of the law." This concern underlies the present thesis. In Paul, who grappled with God's law, is the chief answer to the dilemma. Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome has provided a most systematic discussion of …
The Ending Of Mark Reconsidered, Louis Brighton
The Ending Of Mark Reconsidered, Louis Brighton
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Did Mark end his Gospel at verse 20 of chapter 16, at verse 8, or with an ending which included in some detail the appearances of the risen Christ and the Ascension, or with a short rounded-off phrase after verse 8? The advanced knowledge of new New Testament materials at this point do not make the outcome of our research necessarily more assured. Nevertheless we are finding more alternatives from which to choose. It is, however, the intention of this study to show that there is a good chance with all the materials involved to arrive at a fairly assured …
Πειραξμοξ In The New Testament Of The Gospels, Richard Jeske
Πειραξμοξ In The New Testament Of The Gospels, Richard Jeske
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
What, therefore, is the meaning of Πειραξμóσ? What is the force and power behind it? Has the New Testament taken over older ideas connected with Πειραξμóσ or has it contributed new meaning to the word? How does the substantive relate to its verb form Πειραξω? These and other questions will be answered in the following thesis.
A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke
A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the use of the passive voice in the Synoptic Gospels. Every verb in the Synoptic Gospels that occurs in the passive voice is examined without exception to determine if it is used to cover or veil the divine name of God or God's divine activity. This idea was suggested by the Index of Subjects of the Blasa-Debrunner-Funk Grammar. Under the subject of the Passive (voice) is listed the use of the passive "to avoid the divine name. 112 It was also noted that Joachim Jeremias in two of his works quite often …
The Theology Of The Book Of Proverbs, William Macdonald
The Theology Of The Book Of Proverbs, William Macdonald
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Specifically, then, the purpose of this study is to discover and clarify the contribution of the שָׁלִיממְ to Old Testament theology. How does the theology herein reflected relate in general to the Law and Prophets? What are the distinctive emphases of the Book? What significance is to be derived from the palpable omissions? Does the theology inherent in the Book merely reflect that of the remainder of the Old Testament or does it contribute something new into the stream of truth?
The Concept Of Pleroma In Its Contribution To Pauline Christology, Harold Merklinger
The Concept Of Pleroma In Its Contribution To Pauline Christology, Harold Merklinger
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the meaning of the word πλήεωμα as it is used by St. Paul and from its theological content to ascertain Paul's contribution to Christology in his employment of the concept. Theologically Paul's concept of Pleroma is among his basic concepts. This is particularly true in his epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians. In the latter Paul uses Pleroma to give his readers a glimpse into the deep relationship which exists between the Father and the Son, while in the former epistle he moves Pleroma over into the realm of Ecclesiology …
Matthew's Concept Of The Son Of God In The Context Of Jesus' Baptism And First Temptation, Paul Bretscher
Matthew's Concept Of The Son Of God In The Context Of Jesus' Baptism And First Temptation, Paul Bretscher
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Like Cullmann, Fuller sees a close conceptual relationship between the language of sonship and that of the Servant in Deutero- Isniah.
It is to this kind of inquiry that the present study hopes to make a contribution. We shall not attempt, as others have done, to construct a total Christology, or even to trace our single term through the whole of the New Testament. We shall concentrate on one Book, the Gospel of Matthew, and within that book on one moment, the baptism of Jesus and His first (wilderness) temptation. Resources which contribute to this limited area of study we …
An Investigation Of Ode Fourteen Of The Septuagint ‘‘Οααι, John Recks
An Investigation Of Ode Fourteen Of The Septuagint ‘‘Οααι, John Recks
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper will pursue a study of. the structure, content, and history of the Gloria in Excelsis, and in this way suggest a possible method for giving meaning to other parts of the public worship service. To do this, we will especially concentrate on the Septuagint Ode Fourteen and on the .English version in the forepart of The Lutheran Hymnal.
Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens
Matthew 23: The Comprehensive Polemic Of Jesus Christ, Ray Martens
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
There is no lack of material that illustrates Jesus’ positive teaching on the nature of the kingdom He is establishing, of His role in God’s plan, of the relation of man to God, of the role of God’s children among men, of the function of the law, of the nature of discipleship, and many more specific areas. There is furthermore a significant amount of material which His own teaching. And discredits those who would oppose Him. It is such an extended statement of the Teacher, a statement of attack and criticism recorded by Matthew, that is the subject of this …
Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst
Was Martha's Confession In John 11:27 Used In The Early Church As A Creed, Robert Holst
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The aim of this thesis is to determine whether John 11:27 reflects an early Christian creed or, as an exclamation from Martha, served in the early Church as a creed. In his otherwise excellent chapter “Creedal Elements in the New Testament” in Early Christian Creeds, J. N. D. Kelly does not list John 11:27 as “evidence in the New Testament to show that the faith was already beginning to harden into conventional summaries. This seems an unfortunate omission since Martha’s confession contains not only one of two, but three Christological affirmations joined together asyndetically.
Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow
Developing A Ministry On Mission Fields In The Light Of The New Testament Concepts Of Church And Ministry, Maynard Dorow
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study concerns the ministry of the church. To phrase the question in this way already demonstrates that ministry cannot be understood by itself but that it is to be studied in the context of the church. When we look at ministry in the New Testament we find that it is always involved with serving the purposes of the church. In this chapter, therefore, we will set forth in brief outline the concept of the church as presented in the New Testament in order that our study of ministry might be seen in proper perspective.
Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen
Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study is an attempt to investigate self-examination on the basis of Paul's statement in I Cor. 11:2e. Since the context of the passage is very important, Chapter II studies the immediate context of I Corinthians 11 and the wider context of the entire epistle. Paul's interest throughout the epistle is the concern that the Corinthians recognize Christ as the κúριος in their lives.
The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron
The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper does not purport to resolve the question of the centuries with an air of final authority. Rather it is an attempt to delve once again into the New. Testament, in particular the letters of Paul, to find there what proceed with the search it will be necessary to investigate what different authors have said concerning various key passages, and to weigh, their statements on the scales of other Pauline, New Testament, and Old Testament evidence. Throughout we propose to adhere to the principle that Scripture interprets itself, so that one passage in Paul must be seen in the …
The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is the contention of this writer that, although these various theological interpretations may offer a partial explanation to the enigma of Luke's "central section," they do not adequately account for the diversity or arrangement of material. It is the writer's thesis that Luke may have selected a part of his materials for the "central section" from a collection of pericopae used to train missionaries in the early Church. That such a written or oral tradition existed before St. Luke wrote his Gospel may be inferred from St. Paul's sermon at Antioch in Pisidia, "But God raised him from the …
