Restoration, Resistance, And Reconstruction: Liberty At Last In Clarke County, Virginia, 1865-1879, Kyle Allen Ainsworth Aug 2010

Restoration, Resistance, And Reconstruction: Liberty At Last In Clarke County, Virginia, 1865-1879, Kyle Allen Ainsworth

Master's Theses

The transition from slavery to freedom after the Civil War was a drawn out struggle to define how African Americans and whites would share the new social, political, and economic landscape. In Clarke County, Virginia, whites attempted to create political solidarity by demonizing blacks. Black and white voting patterns show how well the editors of the local newspaper, the Clarke Courier, encouraged the restoration of white supremacy with their negative writing about African Americans. White concerns about potential black challenges to their political and social supremacy created cultural space for African Americans to resist in ways that white people did …

The Study Of The Forward-Voltage To Junction-Temperature Coefficient Degradation In Light-Emitting Diodes, Christopher B. Grasberger Jul 2010

The Study Of The Forward-Voltage To Junction-Temperature Coefficient Degradation In Light-Emitting Diodes, Christopher B. Grasberger

Master's Theses

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently become exceedingly popular in general lighting. As their popularity grows, the demand of more complex and more powerful systems grows as well. While optical characteristics are a crucial component of any lighting product, the main selling point of an LED is their long life and reliability. Unfortunately, the lifetime and reliability of a LED are heavily dependent on the junction temperature of the LED.

Thermal management for LEDs has become an important field study for LEDs. Unfortunately, as the LEDs grow smaller and more integrated, it becomes impossible at times to directly measure their junction …

Determining The Fate Of Hybridized Genomes In The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus, Tina Y. Wang Jul 2010

Determining The Fate Of Hybridized Genomes In The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus, Tina Y. Wang

Master's Theses

Polyploidy is widely acknowledged as a widespread mechanism in the evolution and speciation of the majority of flowering plants. Allopolyploid forms through interspecific hybridization and whole genome duplication. While allopolyploids may display increased vigor relative to their progenitors, they can also face challenges to fertility following hybridization. Genetic changes in allopolyploids result from recombination between the hybridized subgenomes, which can influence phenotype and ultimately determine fitness of future generations. To study dynamic changes that follow allopolyploid formation, Brassica napus lineages were derived by hybridizing Brassica oleracea and Brassica rapa. Two lineages of B. napus were analyzed for genetic and phenotypic …

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell Iv Jun 2010

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell Iv

Master's Theses

In 1890, Germany and Great Britain concluded the Treaty of Helgoland-Zanzibar, which settled many of their numerous and complex colonial issues in Africa. The territorial exchange of British-held Helgoland and German-held Zanzibar, which was part of this agreement, had a major impact in its finalization. Indeed, without the Helgoland- Zanzibar swap, such a treaty most likely would never have occurred. Many hoped that the Helgoland-Zanzibar agreement would usher in a new era in Anglo-German friendship and, perhaps, lead to a formal alliance. Hence, during the 1880s, the seemingly unrelated questing of a North Sea island and imperialist jostling in East …

Improved Rf Power Extraction From 1.55um Ge-On-Soi Pin Photodiodes With Load Impedance Optimization, Andrew L. Huard Jun 2010

Improved Rf Power Extraction From 1.55um Ge-On-Soi Pin Photodiodes With Load Impedance Optimization, Andrew L. Huard

Master's Theses

VLSI miniaturization has created the need for high-density, low-cost, monolithically-integrated optical interconnects. High output power photodetectors are needed to directly drive load circuitry, which improves the noise performance and dynamic range of optical communications links by eliminating a post amplifier stage. Elimination of the post amplifier also reduces circuit cost and complexity. A new Si-Ge PIN waveguide photodiode with 31GHz bandwidth and 93% quantum efficiency at 1550nm has been developed by Yin et al., which was fabricated using standard CMOS processes on a Silicon substrate. This thesis demonstrates a method for improving the RF power extraction from these photodiodes by …

Environmental Variables Influencing The Severity Of Pierce's Disease In California Grapevines, Christopher James Boisseranc

Master's Theses

This project was designed to correlate environmental variables with the development of Pierce’s Disease (PD), an infection caused by the gram negative bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), in grapes (Hopkins et al. 2002). PD is one of the most difficult crop pathogens to manage because it is vectored by insects and its continued presence in the vine is usually fatal. PD is influenced by the interaction of host, disease and vector, and probably many other environmental variables. The general objective was to study and identify the most important variables involved in the expression of Pierce’s Disease.

Over a two year period, …
