The Effects Of Kettlebell Training On Aerobic Capacity, Jonathan Asher Falatic
The Effects Of Kettlebell Training On Aerobic Capacity, Jonathan Asher Falatic
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a kettlebell training program on aerobic capacity. Seventeen female NCAA Division I collegiate soccer players (age 19.7 +1.0 years, height 166.1 +6.4 cm, weight 64.2 +8.2 kg) completed a graded exercise test to determine maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Participants were placed into a kettlebell intervention (KB) group (n = 9) or a circuit weight training control (CWT) group (n = 8). Participants in the KB group completed a kettlebell snatch test to determine individual snatch repetitions. Both groups trained 3 days per week for 4 weeks in …
Wrf-Model Performance For Wind Power Forecasting In The Coast Ranges Of Central California, Kevin Thomas Clifford
Wrf-Model Performance For Wind Power Forecasting In The Coast Ranges Of Central California, Kevin Thomas Clifford
Master's Theses
This study describes the verification of modeled low-level atmospheric conditions in the complex terrain surrounding the Altamont Pass wind farm near Livermore, California, USA. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) was used to (1) simulate the Coast Range near-surface winds, and (2) simulate low-level flow and available wind power in the Altamont Pass. Standard statistical verifications were performed against low-level wind speed observations at seventeen sites. Available wind power was calculated using equivalent wind speed and was evaluated for six areas within Altamont Pass. The overall results include good model performance for the regional near-surface winds, acceptable to good …
An Existential Phenomenological Examination Of Parkour And Freerunning, Jennifer L. Clegg
An Existential Phenomenological Examination Of Parkour And Freerunning, Jennifer L. Clegg
Master's Theses
Recently, there has been growing interest among scholars in the concept of edgework to examine voluntary risk-taking behavior. Parkour is an emerging sport that finds a nexus between transgression, risk, and accessibility that may represent a unique form of edgework. Few scholars have examined sport as an edgework pursuit, and fewer still have attempted to portray the lived and embodied experiences of edgeworkers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to expand sport and edgework research by qualitatively examining the lived, sporting experiences of parkour practitioners.
Phenomenological interviews were conducted with 11 (9 male, 2 female) intermediate-to-advanced traceurs (parkour practioners) …
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Endcapped Silica Hydride Stationary Phase, Prema Gangadhara
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Endcapped Silica Hydride Stationary Phase, Prema Gangadhara
Master's Theses
The silanization/hydrosilation process was developed to overcome some of the drawbacks associated with the use of organosilane reagents for the synthesis of high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases. The first step is called silanization, in which silica or other oxides react with triethoxysilane (TES), resulting in the formation of a silica hydride surface. Endcapping the stationary phase using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) eliminates the unreacted and accessible silanols on the silica hydride intermediate.
This research employed the modification of bare silica to silica hydride via silanization. Endcapping after silanization eliminated accessible and unreacted silanols. Endcapping was confirmed by …
Tools Of Engagement: The Potential Of Theatre Web Sites For Fostering Active Audience Participation, Elizabeth Lynn Mcclelland
Tools Of Engagement: The Potential Of Theatre Web Sites For Fostering Active Audience Participation, Elizabeth Lynn Mcclelland
Master's Theses
This thesis explores whether theatre Web sites contain tools that have the potential to deepen audience engagement in live performance. By synthesizing data from a variety of scholarly sources, it presents a thorough and specific definition of engagement (active participation through educated interpretation, conversation and critique, social connection to a theatre company's community, or creative expression) and makes a detailed case that online tools can increase audience engagement. Because it addresses the significance of engagement and Internet technologies to audience participation in the theatrical event, this study is relevant not only to theatre and arts participation scholars but also to …
Diet Of The Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) Inside And Outside Of Marine Protected Areas In Central California, Erin Kimberly Loury
Diet Of The Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) Inside And Outside Of Marine Protected Areas In Central California, Erin Kimberly Loury
Master's Theses
Marine protected areas (MPAs) can potentially impact food web dynamics by increasing the density of predatory fishes within their borders. Such increases in density can cause shifts in the prey use of generalist predators. This study investigated the effects of increased conspecific density on the diet of Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes carnatus) at a 35-year-old MPA at Point Lobos and four newly established central California MPAs at Año Nuevo, Point Lobos, Piedras Blancas, and Point Buchon. Analysis of 710 stomachs collected in 2007-2009 indicated the most important overall prey were crabs, especially of the family Pisidae and the genus Cancer, as …
Can The Fear Of Death Inspire Creativity?, Michelle Murphy
Can The Fear Of Death Inspire Creativity?, Michelle Murphy
Master's Theses
The current study examined whether participant's creative performance changed after they became aware of their mortality. The main hypotheses predicted that (1) participants who have highly creative personalities would show an increase in creative performance following mortality salience, (2) participants with less creative personalities would show a decrease in creative performance following mortality salience. Highly creative individuals were distinguished from less creative individuals based on their personality composition. The Consequences Test (Guilford, 1970) was used to measure creative performance. To examine whether creative performance changed after mortality salience, participants completed Form 1A of the Consequences Test, a mortality salience manipulation, …
Construction And Simplicity Of The Large Mathieu Groups, Robert Peter Hansen
Construction And Simplicity Of The Large Mathieu Groups, Robert Peter Hansen
Master's Theses
In this thesis, we describe the construction of the Mathieu group M24 given by Ernst Witt in 1938, a construction whose geometry was examined by Jacques Tits in 1964. This construction is achieved by extending the projective semilinear group PΓL3(F4) and its action on the projective plane P²(F4). P²(F4) is the projective plane over the field of 4 elements, with 21 points and 21 lines, and PΓL3(F4) is the largest group sending lines to lines in P²(F4).This plane has 168 6-point subsets, hexads, with the …
The Production And Planning Process Of The Book Of Kells, Roxanne V. Jones
The Production And Planning Process Of The Book Of Kells, Roxanne V. Jones
Master's Theses
In describing manuscripts such as the Book of Kells, it is often noted that they were copied from pre-existing documents, suggesting that the task of making such manuscripts was easy. While the scribes did use pre-existing manuscripts as an exemplar, the layout of the manuscript had to be carefully planned before ink or pigment could be placed on the page because the nature of the materials they used--the ink, pigments, and vellum--were often scarce and expensive. Scribes did not have the luxury of having an endless supply of materials at their disposal. Preparation of the material took time. Once the …
Numerical Investigation Of Fundamental Physics For Flows Over Expansion And Compression Corners, Freddy Ngo
Numerical Investigation Of Fundamental Physics For Flows Over Expansion And Compression Corners, Freddy Ngo
Master's Theses
Oblique shocks and expansion waves are commonly found in aerospace applications such as wings and nozzles. These types of shocks change the properties of the flow, thus causing changes in the lift, drag, and/or heat transfer. Hypersonic flow is important to study as its impacts are significant. In this thesis, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is utilized to characterize the physics of the flow. Parametric studies of the Mach number and turning angle were conducted. Simulations included both inviscid and viscous flows to demonstrate the effects of boundary layer on flow properties. The majority of the viscous flows were focused on …
Polytasking And Job Stress Across Cultures, Ashwini Palekar
Polytasking And Job Stress Across Cultures, Ashwini Palekar
Master's Theses
The current study explored the relationship between country of origin and personal and organizational polytasking in relation to stressors and strains. The study also investigated how temporal incongruence could be a source of stress. A total of 440 surveys were collected from full-time employees, including Asian Indians in the USA (n= 67), Asian Indians in India (n=253), and non-Asian Indians in the USA (n= 120). Results indicate that non-Asian Indians in the USA perceive significantly greater levels of personal and organizational polytasking than Asian Indians. There were no significant differences in perceptions of personal and organizational polytasking for Asian Indians …
Supplemental Home-Based Exercise During Cardiac Rehabilitation, Addison Pica
Supplemental Home-Based Exercise During Cardiac Rehabilitation, Addison Pica
Master's Theses
In this study, the effects of supplemental, home-based walking on resting systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and quality of life (QoL) in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients were evaluated. Twelve patients wore pedometers during the last four weeks of their 12-week CR program. Resting systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and QoL were measured at weeks 1, 8, and 12. After data collection, participants were categorized into low, moderate, and high volume groups based on their average number of steps taken per week. There was significant improvement in QoL during the 12-week CR program (F(2,9) = 10.940, p < .001). Participants rated their QoL better at weeks 8 (p = .02) and 12 (p < .001) than at week 1. However, the amount of supplemental walking during the final four weeks of the CR program did not affect QoL scores (F(2,9) =.165, p > .05). Although there were …
Understanding The Relationship Between Hyper-Violence And Educational Disparity: Listening To The Voices Of Latina Youth From Oakland, Yanira Madrigal-Garcia
Understanding The Relationship Between Hyper-Violence And Educational Disparity: Listening To The Voices Of Latina Youth From Oakland, Yanira Madrigal-Garcia
Master's Theses
The hyper-violence that exists in Oakland, California, has persistently made national headlines. When examining the violence that exists in low-income urban cities, studies usually overemphasize the male experience. The studies that center on female experience usually focus on extreme cases such as gang-involved and incarcerated girls. This study foregrounds the experiences of Latina high school girls from Oakland who are "in the middle," neither gang-involved nor academic high-achievers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate: 1) how the participants make sense of and understand the violence that is present in their communities; 2) how violence impacts their everyday lives …
Dynamics Of Bottom Boundary Layer Thickness In Monterey Bay Canyon, Katherine Jane Morrice
Dynamics Of Bottom Boundary Layer Thickness In Monterey Bay Canyon, Katherine Jane Morrice
Master's Theses
Submarine canyons serve an important role as conduits for exchange, funneling sediment and nutrients between shallow shelf waters and the open ocean. The steep and sloping topography intensifies internal waves that dissipate energy directly by friction at the boundary and indirectly when they are reflected and break distant from the boundary. Although bottom boundary layers (BBL) on continental slopes and abyssal regions have been described, deep continental boundary layers are poorly understood. This study examined along-canyon variability in BBL thicknesses and whether BBL heights were related to previously identified regions of high energy dissipation. Temporal variations in BBL thickness were …
Distribution, Growth, And Disturbance Of Catalina Island Rhodoliths, Paul Anthony Tompkins
Distribution, Growth, And Disturbance Of Catalina Island Rhodoliths, Paul Anthony Tompkins
Master's Theses
Rhodoliths are free-living coralline algae (Rhodophyta) that form large beds on the seafloor. Rhodolith beds are globally widespread and biologically diverse shallow marine habitats. Beds are ecologically sensitive, disturbed by humans, and in Europe are protected by law. While rhodolith beds have been found in California waters at Catalina Island, no literature exists regarding their distribution or ecological significance. This study sought to (1) map the distribution and characterize the rhodolith beds around Catalina, (2) determine the seasonal growth rates, and (3) investigate the effect of common sources of disturbance. A systematic search of shallow subtidal (0-40 meters) areas revealed …
Profiling Miniaturized Separation Media By Micro Infrared Spectroscopy, Kelsi Michel Perttula
Profiling Miniaturized Separation Media By Micro Infrared Spectroscopy, Kelsi Michel Perttula
Master's Theses
Separation methods have been miniaturized in recent years. Capillary electrophoresis is now common and other types of analyses are being done on microfluidic chips with capillary channels in lieu of wider column diameters. The surfaces of the media used for separation are chemically modified. Using infrared spectroscopy by a microscope attachment, attempts were made to characterize the surfaces of both capillary channels and modified polymer for microfluidic chips. FTIR microscopy is not common in this type of analysis and is normally used to analyze particles, such as fibers, paint, and other polymer sources. Since modification of miniaturized chemical media is …
Nearshore Fish Assemblage Patterns With Respect To Landscape-Scale Habitats In Central California, Kristin Irene Hunter-Thomson
Nearshore Fish Assemblage Patterns With Respect To Landscape-Scale Habitats In Central California, Kristin Irene Hunter-Thomson
Master's Theses
In most ecosystems, the distribution of species across a landscape is greatly influenced by the type, amount, and spatial configuration of habitats. Studies in terrestrial environments have shown that species diversity, density, and length frequency often positively correlate with the size of a habitat patch, patch shape, and proximity to a patch edge. These patterns, however, have not been conclusively shown in temperate sub-tidal marine studies. Data from visual strip–transects collected from the Delta submersible were used to characterize fish assemblages with respect to rocky bank habitat patches. Specifically, the density, diversity, and length frequency of nearshore fishes were examined …
Optimizing Energy Savings From "Direct-Dc" In U.S. Residential Buildings, Evangelos Vossos
Optimizing Energy Savings From "Direct-Dc" In U.S. Residential Buildings, Evangelos Vossos
Master's Theses
An increasing number of energy-efficient appliances operate on direct current (DC) internally, offering the potential to use DC power from renewable energy systems directly and avoiding the losses inherent in converting power to alternating current (AC) and back. This paper investigates that potential for net-metered residences with on-site photovoltaics (PV) by modeling the net power draw of the "direct-DC house" with respect to today's typical configuration, assuming identical DC-internal loads. The power draws were modeled for houses in 14 U.S. cities using hourly simulated PV-system output and residential loads. The latter were adjusted to reflect a 35% load reduction representative …
Performing Asexuality Through Narratives Of Sexual Identity, Janet Sundrud
Performing Asexuality Through Narratives Of Sexual Identity, Janet Sundrud
Master's Theses
This thesis explores the social construction of asexual identities through everyday narrative performances and critically examines the marginalizing effects of heteronormative discourses. This thesis posits narrative performance as a framework for understanding asexual identities within a heteronormative society. Drawing upon oral history and ethnographic methodologies, this thesis examines the narrative performances of three self-identified asexuals and explores four themes within each narrative: 1) the breach of heteronormative expectations, 2) the creation of commonality among individuals within the asexual community, 3) the negotiation of heteronormative discourses within the family, and 4) the construction of future-oriented liminoid narratives of asexuality. This thesis …

The Relationship Between Diversity And Performance In Major League Baseball Teams: Conflict's Mediating Effect, Michelle Maureen Campion
Master's Theses
Diversity in the workplace is a growing reality around the world as the globalizing economy has prompted the growth of work teams comprised of individuals from diverse backgrounds with different values, experiences, knowledge, and skills. Researchers have been investigating the way diversity impacts organizational outcomes, including performance. However, it is not clearly understood how diversity impacts performance. Using data from 30 Major League Baseball teams over a two-year period, this research proposed that conflict might mediate the relationship between diversity and performance. Both diversity and performance were measured using multiple indicators. Although results did not indicate that conflict mediated the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Organizational Climates For Creativity, Michael Joseph Cilla
Master's Theses
Technology is growing exponentially, and there is no time to waste for organizations in designing and implementing a creative climate strategy. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) and organizational climates that promote creativity. By collecting data from working undergraduate and MBA students (N=201), multiple significant positive relationships were found between several of the dimensions making up both of these constructs. The results of this study show that employee perceptions of creative climates are moderately related to pro-social behaviors. For employees, working in organizations that promote a creative climate relates to having supportive social-exchange …
Patterns Of Genetic And Morphological Variation In Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) In The Warner Mountains, Allison Linnea Wade
Patterns Of Genetic And Morphological Variation In Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) In The Warner Mountains, Allison Linnea Wade
Master's Theses
A previously recognized north-south mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) break in populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, was investigated in Western North America. A 383-bp fragment of the mtDNA control region was analyzed from 107 tissue samples in the unstudied Warner Mountains of northeastern California. To determine if this north-south mtDNA break was also reflected in morphology, six cranial and mandibular measurements were taken from 72 deer mice. Using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), it was determined that cranial characters did not vary significantly between the two mtDNA haplogroups, and discriminant function analysis (DFA) was unable to discriminate between the two haplogroups. …
Yig-Sphere-Based Phase Shifter For X-Band Phased Array Applications, Donald C. Benson
Yig-Sphere-Based Phase Shifter For X-Band Phased Array Applications, Donald C. Benson
Master's Theses
A novel technique for effecting phase shift of X-band signals has been developed and analyzed for use with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) of signals in a phased array application, and the impact of this phase shifter on error vector magnitude (EVM) has been quantified. A commercially available filter consisting of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres was characterized by means of a network analyzer. The gain and phase response was measured across a 25 MHz frequency band centered at 10 GHz, while the filter was tuned in frequency steps such that a 360° range of phase shifts was achieved. The S-parameters …

Master's Theses
This thesis examined the role and characterization of family members in Disney princess films. The purpose of this study was to fill gaps in previous research on the Disney princess films by analyzing the themes and collection as a whole, including the newest film in the collection, The Princess and the Frog. Using content analysis, this study identified three variables that were present in every Disney princess film in the collection - nuclear family, love, and appearance. The researcher found little family diversity in terms of types of households, parenting roles, and characterization of family members. Siblings were especially underrepresented. …
Investigation Of The Impact Of Co₂ On Water-Rock Interactions Using Sequential Extractions, Sarah Beers
Investigation Of The Impact Of Co₂ On Water-Rock Interactions Using Sequential Extractions, Sarah Beers
Master's Theses
Release of CO₂ into groundwater has an impact on groundwater geochemistry, including a decrease in pH, and increases in alkalinity and cation concentrations. From an experiment in Bozeman, Montana, it was concluded that the cations were released by interactions between groundwater, CO₂, and aquifer sediment. To evaluate these interactions, ions from the aquifer sediment were sequentially extracted to determine which cations and trace metals were associated with different phases in the sediment. These phases included ion exchange sites, carbonate, oxide, and sulfide minerals, and organic material. The data were then compared with the groundwater chemistry data to determine the likely …
Effects Of Wearing A Mouth Guard And Movement Complexity On Simple Reaction Time, Taijiro Hide
Effects Of Wearing A Mouth Guard And Movement Complexity On Simple Reaction Time, Taijiro Hide
Master's Theses
The purpose of the study was to determine how use of a mouth guard and movement complexity affect simple reaction time. The experiment consisted of three prescribed whole body movements of varying complexity. Participants were 12 college aged males who were free from injury and had some experience playing sports. Reaction time was determined using ground reaction force data and video data. A two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures on both factors revealed no significant mouth guard effect. A significant movement complexity effect resulted in longer reaction times for a high complexity movement than for low and moderate complexity …

Getting By At The Benjamin Mays Black Branch: Library Access For African Americans In Jim Crow South Carolina, 1940-1971, Jamie Irene Cutter
Master's Theses
This thesis examines a chapter of South Carolina history that has been neglected in the historical record, namely segregated libraries of the twentieth century. Previous works have covered the history of black libraries in the entire South, but details of South Carolina's segregated libraries are incomplete. This study looks first at the broader context of segregated libraries in the American South and then reviews the history of African American libraries in South Carolina. Finally, this study provides a case study of the Benjamin Mays Library, a segregated, African American library in Greenwood, South Carolina. The case study uses primary source …
Halogenation Enzymes In Bacteria Associated With The Red-Banded Acorn Worm, Ptychodera Jamaicensis, Milena May Lilles
Halogenation Enzymes In Bacteria Associated With The Red-Banded Acorn Worm, Ptychodera Jamaicensis, Milena May Lilles
Master's Theses
Organohalogens have diverse biological functions in the environment. Marine acorn worms produce brominated products that may act as antifoulants, chemical deterrents, and substrates in bioluminescence reactions. Haloperoxidases purified from the homogenates of acorn worms synthesize bromophenols. Commensal or mutualistic bacteria living on the worms may produce halogenation enzymes that brominate organics.
The genomic DNA of 48 bacterial isolates from the surface of the red-banded acorn worm, Ptychodera jamaicensis, was extracted and screened for bromoperoxidase and FADH2-dependent halogenase genes. A 16S rDNA phylogenetic tree showed that the isolates were gram-positive bacteria and included 36 Firmicutes and 12 Actinobacteria. Nineteen isolates had …
The Effects Of Self-Referencing On Mood And Information Processing, Michael Mehler
The Effects Of Self-Referencing On Mood And Information Processing, Michael Mehler
Master's Theses
Research in the area of attitude change has demonstrated that people can process a persuasive message in a systematic or heuristic manner. It has been shown that positive mood increases heuristic processing, whereas negative mood increases systematic processing. In the current study, we were interested in examining one factor that may increase happy people's ability or desire to systematically process a persuasive message, self-referencing. Self-referencing occurs when information is processed by relating it to oneself or one's personal experience. After a happy, neutral, or sad mood was induced, participants were exposed to a message with either self-referencing or no self-referencing …
