Novel Approach To Traveling-Wave-Based Fault Location In Nonhomogeneous Transmission Lines, John Parker Burrell
Master's Theses
Accurate fault location is a critical aspect of power system protection, ensuring grid reliability and minimizing downtime. Traditional traveling-wave-based fault location methods face limitations when applied to nonhomogeneous transmission lines due to the reliance on precise segment velocities and propagation time data. This thesis addresses these challenges by proposing a novel algorithm that leverages historical fault data to estimate segment velocities and refine these estimates as more faults occur. The algorithm was rigorously tested using the digital model of an 11-segment, 65.694 km real overhead transmission line and validated using both simulations and hardware tests using commercially available time-domain protective …

As machine learning models such as neural networks are investigated for their applications across many fields, the demand for models that can be implemented on an embedded device grows. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have become an attractive option for implementing these models in hardware. This thesis considers the viability of FPGA implementations for machine learning on low-resourced embedded systems. The hls4ml project is a promising prospect for machine learning on FPGA devices. To test hls4ml, we used a model trained on the MNIST digits dataset, which was then synthesized for the PYNQ-Z2 device. We fine tuned the performance by …
Type Qualifiers As Catalysts For Language Evolution, Jasper Kahn
Type Qualifiers As Catalysts For Language Evolution, Jasper Kahn
Master's Theses
Mainstream programming languages continually evolve to make correct and perfor- mant programs authored in the language easier to write. Successful new languages often succeed by improving on these qualities over existing languages that have not evolved fast enough. Many improvements derive from research in Static Analysis, but there is often a significant lag between the research and features becoming available in mainstream languages. This thesis focuses on the theory of type qualifiers as a possible means of accelerating the adoption of research results into common usage. Type Qualifiers have a two-decade lineage of static analysis tools, with active research today, …

Yolot: A Recurrent Yolo Model For Robust Video-Based Automotive Object Detection, Dylan Jay Baxter
Master's Theses
Though incredibly effective at detecting objects in isolated frames, modern object detection models are often not designed to take advantage of information present in previous frames of a video stream, despite that data being readily avail- able. To address this shortcoming, this paper proposes YOLOT, a modification of the widely used YOLOv8 object detection model, which seeks to utilize this temporal information with the addition of recurrent structures. In the design of YOLOT, a series of recurrent convolutional modules were inserted at backbone and neck outputs and the final and most effective design was found to be the insertion of …

Circular Restricted Three Body Manifold Trajectories Via Koopman Operator Theory, Lindsey Langton
Circular Restricted Three Body Manifold Trajectories Via Koopman Operator Theory, Lindsey Langton
Master's Theses
There are a multitude of computational techniques capable of modeling the behavior of nonlinear dynamic systems over time. In the field of astrodynamics, the most frequently used tools are numerical integrators, specifically Runge-Kutta algorithms. These algorithms have successfully produced numerous two-body trajectories, as well as an increasing number of three-body trajectories when two-body dynamic models fail to produce Δv values within the realm of mission feasibility. Koopman operator theory is an alternative method for modeling nonlinear dynamic behavior that captures an approximation of a nonlinear dynamic system on a defined basis in the Hilbert space. The Koopman operator is an …
Design, Test, And Comparison Of A Photovoltaic Thermal Hybrid Solar Collector Utilizing A Thermosiphon, And Theory And Analysis Of Related Predictive Computer Model, Lance Brown
Master's Theses
Design, construction and testing of a photovoltaic thermal collector, or PVT, was completed to determine efficiency improvements of this system compared to a conventional solar panel and to find the thermal energy gained through hot water storage. Flow, driven by density changes from solar radiation, creates a thermosiphon, moving water without the use of a pump and ultimately drawing heat away from the solar panel. This is done to create a more efficient solar panel as well as decreasing potential damage due to high temperatures. Evaluation of electrical efficiency, thermal efficiency and flowrate allow for comparison between other PVT systems. …

Development Of Ex-Situ Accelerated Chemical Stress Test Protocol For Common Anionic Exchange Membrane Chemistries, Michael D. Friend, Michael D. Friend
Master's Theses
The development of sustainably produced hydrogen fuel (“green hydrogen”) is key for the transition to clean energy sources. Green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis. As with many clean energy sources, one of the major barriers for scaling water electrolysis is cost. A newer category of water electrolysis is Anionic Exchange Membrane (AEM) water electrolysis. AEM electrolysis systems have the potential to cost less as they do not require the expensive precious metal catalysts the current high preforming Proton Exchange Membrane water electrolysis technologies do. However, AEM lifetimes must be long enough to be cost competitive and AEM chemical durability …

Plasmodium Berghei Subpellicular Microtubule Protein-1 (Pbspm-1) Is A Microtubule Stabilizing Protein That Affects Schizont Development, Manuel Joseph Widuch
Master's Theses
In eukaryotes, microtubules (MTs) are regulated by microtubule-associated proteins (MAP), only a few of which have been characterized in the malaria parasite to date. Here we present the functional characterization of STOP axonemal protein 1 (SAXO1) of the rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei. The protein exhibits high sequence and organizational conservation to the subpellicular microtubule protein 1 (SPM1) of the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii and SAXO1 of Trypanosoma brucei. SAXO1 proteins are conserved in most eukaryotes where they form a protein family. We refer to this protein as PbSPM1. It is a 38 kD protein that is organized into an N-terminal …

Investigating The Role Of Out-Of-School Experiences In Racial And Ethnic Identity Formation For Black Youth Within An Ecological Model, Maureen Burns
Master's Theses
Racial and ethnic identity formation is associated with psychological well-being and this is especially true for youth of color, including Black adolescents. Currently, there is a dearth of literature examining influences on this facet of identity during adolescents, outside of parental socialization and school-related factors. Participation in organized out-of-school activities has been associated with positive outcomes, such as social and emotional well-being, which, in turn, is related to identity formation. The goal of the present study was to better understand the relation between out-of-school experiences and racial and ethnic identity among Black adolescents. Participants included Black identifying adolescents, ages 14-19 …

Behavioral Ecology And Physiology Of Spotted Turtles (Clemmys Guttata) In A Fragmented And Polluted Landscape, Jessica Rojas Lindberg
Master's Theses
Turtles are one of the most threatened groups of animals across the globe. This is especially true for freshwater turtles that rely on multiple habitats to fulfill their life history requirements. Wetlands are a crucial habitat type for many freshwater turtle species, and this ecosystem has been susceptible to conversion, fragmentation, and pollution. In turn, these hazards to wetland habitats threaten already declining freshwater turtle populations. The spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) is a species of freshwater turtle that is particularly at-risk due to life history traits as well as habitat fragmentation and pollution. This study aims to investigate the effects …

Rethinking The Relationship Between Capitalism And Environmental Sustainability: Locating Nigeria Within The Globe, Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Madu
Master's Theses
The relationship between capitalism and environmental sustainability and how problems arising from this relationship can be resolved globally and locally is vital for those with economic and environmental concerns. The environment that provides human beings with essential survival needs has to be preserved if these needs are expected to be available for future generations while also being enough for the present generation of human beings. One obstacle to protecting the environment is climate change due to global warming. What is responsible for global warming that ultimately leads to environmental unsustainability? This study pursues this question by rethinking the relationship between …

Examining The Sexual Identity Disclosure Process Among Black Queer Femmes And Their Families, Kaylah Denis
Master's Theses
Existing queer identity development theories often overlook the unique intersectional experiences of Black queer femmes (BQF), limiting their applicability and effectiveness in addressing the challenges faced by this population. Traditional models typically emphasize "coming out" to friends and family as a key step towards identity integration and self-actualization. However, these frameworks may not adequately capture the complexities faced by BQF, who navigate tensions between their racial/ethnic and LGBTQ+ identities. This study aimed to: 1) explore BQF experiences related to disclosing their sexual minority status to family members, 2) understand family members' responses to these disclosures, and 3) identify factors influencing …

Investigating The Role Of Endothelin-1 In Reactive Astrocytosis, Candace Betancourt-Szymanowska
Master's Theses
Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy which results in blindness for many patients, even with treatment. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a vasoactive peptide known to be aberrantly upregulated in the eyes of individuals with glaucoma. Optic nerve head astrocytes (ONHA) are the resident glial cell of the optic nerve head and are among the first cell types to undergo changes to a reactive phenotype. In this thesis, we investigated the role of ET-1 overexpression and its putative role in eliciting a reactive phenotype in ONHA by inducing lentiviral-mediated over-expression of EDN1. ONHA transduced with EDN1 (ONHA ET-1) were verified to be …
Transcleral Chemotherapeutic Delivery By Fibrin Sealant In The Treatment Of Retinoblastoma, Christopher Himes
Transcleral Chemotherapeutic Delivery By Fibrin Sealant In The Treatment Of Retinoblastoma, Christopher Himes
Master's Theses
Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular cancer in children, accounting for roughly 9,000 new cases each year—claiming the lives of up to 70% of cases in certain regions of the world. While modern retinoblastoma treatments in developed countries have significantly reduced mortality rates, post-treatment consequences such as vision loss, off-site organ dysfunction, and secondary metastases remain unmet clinical needs. Past studies have confirmed transscleral delivery as an efficacious means to achieve high intraocular drug concentrations possibly superior to the standard systemic regimen of vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin (VEC) for tumor suppression. This led to several studies exploring the use of …
The Influence Of Maternal Size/Age Effects On The Physiological Responses Of Adult Female Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes Carnatus) To Ocean Acidification And Hypoxia, Dylan H. Sarish
Master's Theses
Climate change is rapidly reshaping the chemistry of the ocean. Fishes living in California coastal waters are experiencing increased ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) due to more frequent and intense upwelling. Nearshore rockfish may be particularly threatened by these conditions due to their long generational times. However, it is unknown how OAH may impact maternal physiology and reproduction in these viviparous fish. To understand the physiological effects of OAH during gestation, adult female gopher rockfish, Sebastes carnatus, were exposed to a variety of combined OAH stress treatments during different gestational stages. Routine metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR), blood …

An assessment will be included on how social media platforms have been utilized to inform and mis-inform citizens under recent governmental integration campaigns and disintegration efforts …
Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis Subflavus) Population Genetic Structure In The Southeastern United States, Laura Henderson
Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis Subflavus) Population Genetic Structure In The Southeastern United States, Laura Henderson
Master's Theses
Tricolored bats (Perimyotis subflavus) have experienced substantial population losses from white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) which infects hibernating bats. Determining population genetic structure helps assess genetic diversity and the impacts of wildlife threats to populations. Pre-WNS data shows weak-to-negligible structure and panmictic P. subflavus populations at core portions of their range. However, current genetic data from their southeastern U.S. range is lacking. I sought to determine whether recent genetic data help resolve genetic structure among southeastern populations and assess genetic differences at two stages of impact: post-WNS and …
