Giving And Taking Orders: Race, Rank, And The United States Military, Natalie Levy Seefeldt
Giving And Taking Orders: Race, Rank, And The United States Military, Natalie Levy Seefeldt
Master's Theses
This thesis explores racial representation in the United States military throughout each rank level, within all active and reserve branches, to determine whether racial representation is related to rank. Using a census of the U.S. military from the Department of Defense, I establish a summary of what representation looks like overall, and more specifically, what it looks like within enlisted, warrant officer, and officer ranks. The citizen-soldier theory contends that failure on the part of the U.S. military to maintain representative forces threatens the legitimacy and credibility of democracy and could even become a threat to it (Armor and Gilroy, …
The Effects Of Candidate Religiosity And Candidate Secularism On Voters' Support For The Political Candidate, Nathanael Gratias Sumaktoyo
The Effects Of Candidate Religiosity And Candidate Secularism On Voters' Support For The Political Candidate, Nathanael Gratias Sumaktoyo
Master's Theses
This study examines the effects of candidate religiosity, candidate secularism, and voter fundamentalism on voters' support for a political candidate. Seven effects were tested: 1) the religiosity effect, which suggests that a religious candidate will be supported more than a nonreligious candidate; 2) the secularism effect, which suggests that a secular candidate will be supported more than a nonsecular candidate; 3) the JFK effect, which suggests that a secular religious candidate will be supported more than a nonsecular religious candidate; 4) the deviant effect--an opposite of the JFK effect--, which suggests that a secular religious candidate constitutes a group deviant, …
The Relation Of Executive Functions To Active Coping Strategies And Internalizing Symptoms In A Community Sample Of African-American Youth, Arie Zakaryan
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the relations between stressor appraisals, active coping, executive functions, and internalizing symptoms in a community sample of low-income African-American youth. There is a dearth of studies assessing how executive functions influence the connection between coping and internalizing symptoms, notably in community and minority populations. When faced with distressing, uncontrollable settings straining the capacity to self-regulate, youth with executive functioning deficits may encounter greater challenges in coping with stressors. Yet, since typically adaptive active coping strategies do not benefit some youth and can result in negative outcomes, it is important to identify what …
Testimony, Remhi And Senselessness In Guatemalan Memory, Melissa Jean Boroughs
Testimony, Remhi And Senselessness In Guatemalan Memory, Melissa Jean Boroughs
Master's Theses
This thesis argues that the fragmented form of the Guatemalan collective memory concerning the genocide can be more clearly understood by analyzing and comparing testimonial literature, documentaries, the Truth Commission report, a novel, and works of performance art. All of these works are considered to be artifacts of memory of the Guatemalan genocide, each one offering a different perspective on the past and present of Guatemala.
Spanish Women Remembered In Elena Quiroga's Tristura, Escribo Tu Nombre And A Enferma, Ellen Patricia Brugliera
Spanish Women Remembered In Elena Quiroga's Tristura, Escribo Tu Nombre And A Enferma, Ellen Patricia Brugliera
Master's Theses
The Silenced Women in Spain
Through three novels written by Spanish author, Elena Quiroga (1921-1995), this thesis intends to develop a better comprehension of women's role and identity during the Second Republic in Spain (December, 1931-1936), and under Franco's almost 40 year reign between 1936 and 1975.
Although the Republic sought to initiate change for women via constitutional and legislative reforms, the forms of mobilization occurred under male tutelage, and the Republic's lack of strategy combined with organizational fragmentation led, in some ways, to the immobilization of women. Because the society was in flux, these attempts at reform were also …
Unpacking The Study Of Instructional Improvement: Issues, Outcomes, And Implications Of Three Comprehensive School Reform Efforts, Gabriella Silva Gorsky
Unpacking The Study Of Instructional Improvement: Issues, Outcomes, And Implications Of Three Comprehensive School Reform Efforts, Gabriella Silva Gorsky
Master's Theses
There is a long history of educational reform efforts in the United States. Current literature on school reform suggests that a comprehensive approach that involves implementing instructional change across many instructional domains is more effective at producing the types of far-reaching improvement desired compared with mono-focal approaches focusing on a single new strategy. This study explored the impacts and outcomes of the Accelerated Schools Project (ASP), America’s Choice (AC), and Success for All (SFA) within the Study of Instructional Improvement (Ball, Cohen, & Rowan, 2010) schools to answer three primary questions: Are student outcomes on TerraNova mirrored by outcomes on …

Learning Freedom: Education, Elevation, And New York's African American Middle Class, 1827-1829, Michael Hines
Master's Theses
The education of free African American children in the antebellum period is a subject that has interested historians and scholars of education for decades. This thesis uses a new set of primary source material gathered from the pages of Freedom's Journal, the first African American owned and operated news organ in American history, to trace the development of attitudes regarding education in the free black community of New York in the late 1820s. By examining the editorials, articles, advice columns, and illustrations focused on education and child rearing that appear in the 104 issues of Freedom's Journal, this thesis shows …

Sustainable Diverse Communities: A Comparison Of Hammond, Indiana And Chicago's Uptown Neighborhood, Teresa Neumann
Master's Theses
According to US Census data Hammond, IN - a midsized American City - and Chicago's Uptown neighborhood both have census tracts that have been racially, ethnically and economically diverse over the past 20-30 years. Utilizing the engaged methodology of community-based research this project uses the voice of community leaders from both Hammond and Uptown to inform and illustrate what is happening behind the Census data. This includes the role of civic institutions, local government and local business. Through long form structured interviews individuals offered their perspectives, concerns and ideas about how this diversity came about and what challenges and opportunities …
Assessing The Effects Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On Microbial Communities In Stream Sediment Using Artificial Streams And High Throughput Screening, Alexandra Ozaki
Master's Theses
Nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) is an engineered nanomaterial used in a wide array of commercial products. The production and use of large amounts of nano-TiO2 is resulting in the unintended release to the environment. Nano-TiO2 is known to be cytotoxic due primarily to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species, and negative impacts on a variety of organisms have been demonstrated, but the effects of nano-TiO2 on complex microbial communities under ecologically relevant conditions have rarely been tested. We conducted a controlled manipulative experiment using recirculating model streams dosed with a one-time amendment of 1mg L-1 nano-TiO2 (specifically P25). Within one …
Antibodies To Inhibit Clostridium Difficile Adhesion To Human Gut Epithelial Cell Line, Wonbeom Paik
Antibodies To Inhibit Clostridium Difficile Adhesion To Human Gut Epithelial Cell Line, Wonbeom Paik
Master's Theses
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a major hospital-acquired diarrhea that can cause life-threatening complications such as pseudomembranous colitis. CDI is caused by colonization of host with C. difficile, a Gram positive, anaerobic bacterium known to produce toxins that cause disease. Normally, the gut microbiota protects the host from CDI, but disruption of the microbial composition through antibiotic treatment can leave one vulnerable for CDI. To date, no vaccines for preventing CDI are available.
In this study, the potential of antibodies directed against specific surface molecules of C. difficile to block bacterial adherence to host gut epithelial cells was studied, in …
Spatiotemporal Variability In The Diet Of Nonbreeding Brandt's Cormorant (Phalacrocorax Penicillatus) In The Monterey Bay Region, Lisa Webb
Master's Theses
Brandt's Cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus) diet composition was investigated using pellets (n = 285) collected on 19 sampling days at 3 locations during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 nonbreeding seasons in the Monterey Bay region. The conventional diet method was used, and the efficacy of the all-structure technique was evaluated. Although 29 species were consumed, Northern Anchovy (Engraulis mordax) dominated the diet and Speckled Sanddab (Citharichthys stigmaeus) also was important. Few rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) and Market Squid (Doryteuthis opalescens) were consumed compared with the number consumed in previous studies in the region during …
Characterization Of Silver Nanoparticle-Infused Tissue Adhesive For Ophthalmic Use, William Yee
Characterization Of Silver Nanoparticle-Infused Tissue Adhesive For Ophthalmic Use, William Yee
Master's Theses
This research examined if the infusion of silver nanoparticles into a 2-octyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive alters the antibacterial effectiveness and mechanical properties of the adhesive. Silver nanoparticle size and concentration combinations were varied to determine the effects of these factors. Uniform distribution of the silver nanoparticles was achieved before proceeding to testing. Antibacterial effectiveness of the composite adhesive was determined via the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test and by CFU counting. Doping the adhesive with silver nanoparticles resulted in an order of magnitude reduction in bacterial growth. The greatest antibacterial effect came from imbuing 10 μg/mL of 4 nm silver …
Forest Regeneration On The Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, Manette E. Sandor
Forest Regeneration On The Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, Manette E. Sandor
Master's Theses
Woody species diversity of secondary forest has the potential to converge with that found in old growth forest. This study is the first to examine multiple aspects of species and reproductive trait diversity, and their relationship to each other, across a successional chronosequence. Species richness and species diversity increases with increasing age of forest. Diaspore size and diversity as well as fruit size generally increased with increasing age of forest, but fruit size diversity did not. Abundance of animal-dispersed species increased whereas wind-dispersed species decreased in abundance over succession. Insect-pollinated individuals were most abundant overall. Diaspore diversity, pollination diversity, and …

Condition-Dependent Risk Assessment Of Large-Scale Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Power Systems, Sherwin Li
Master's Theses
This thesis reviews the methods for evaluating the reliability of large PV systems and techniques for quantifying the impacts of PV interconnection on distribution system reliability. In addition, a comparative study is performed to evaluate the seasonal condition-dependent risk performance of central-inverter and string-inverter grid-tied PV power systems. Major contributions include: 1) risk analysis of seasonal impacts for string and centralized PV systems. Seasonal sensitivities of PV system risks to system structures, temperature variation, solar insolation, and capacitor equivalent series resistance are analyzed; and 2) the incorporation of the effect of operational conditions and the aging failure model into the …
Game Theory Approach To Transportation Network Vulnerability Measurement, Qixing Wang
Game Theory Approach To Transportation Network Vulnerability Measurement, Qixing Wang
Master's Theses
The vulnerability of a transportation network is strongly correlated with the ability of the network to withstand shocks and disruptions. A robust network with strategic redundancy allows for the redistribution or reassignment of traffic without unduly compromising system performance. As such, high-volume edges with limited alternative paths represent system vulnerabilities – a feature of transportation networks that has been exploited in the past to identify critical components. In this thesis, a mixed-strategy, two opponents, non-zero sum, combinatorial game theoretical framework are presented for measuring network vulnerability. Two solution approaches (Shortest Path Algorithm with Entropy function (SPE) & User Equilibrium Assignment …
A Depolymerization Based Model Of Neuron Growth Cone Shape And Motility, Neerajha Nagarajan
A Depolymerization Based Model Of Neuron Growth Cone Shape And Motility, Neerajha Nagarajan
Master's Theses
Cell migration is a ubiquitous process underlying critical biological mechanisms like wound healing, cancer metastasis and even neuron growth cone motility. It is a critical process for the living organisms as it ensures proper functioning of the system, for example, crawling fibroblasts endure closure of wounds during wound healing. Here we focus our interest on neuron growth cones, a sensory and motile organelle present at the tip of extending neurites, like the axons, in neurons. These are responsible for neuron pathfinding onto specific targets and synapses, in responses to various guidance cues. Interestingly, the motility of the growth cones is …
Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik
Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik
Master's Theses
From thunderstorms to hurricanes, electric distribution networks are subject to a wide range of warm weather storm events. Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) are two events in recent memory that disrupted over half of The Connecticut Light and Power Company’s (CL&P) service territory, which left some customers without power for up to eleven days. This research study investigates a damage prediction framework for both thunderstorms and hurricanes that combines two generalized linear models to probabilistically determine the occurrence and extent of damages, known as trouble spots, to the overhead power distribution network. The models are inputted with …

Effects Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury On Spatial Working Memory, Amanda L. Smith
Effects Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury On Spatial Working Memory, Amanda L. Smith
Master's Theses
Children born prematurely or at very low birth weight (VLBW) have an increased risk for hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HI). HI refers to a lack of adequate blood and oxygen flow in the brain. HI can also occur in the term infant due to birth complications such as prolonged labor, placental dysfunction, or cord prolapse. In both populations (though exact patterns of neuropathology vary) brain damage is likely to occur in the form of decreased hippocampal and cortical volume, and enlargement of the ventricles (Kesler et al., 2004, Nagy et al., 2009). Resulting neuropathology can in turn lead to cognitive …

A Finite Difference Implementation Of Phase Field Theory, Nicholas W. Oren
A Finite Difference Implementation Of Phase Field Theory, Nicholas W. Oren
Master's Theses
Computationally handling cracks generally results in numerically unstable results. Specifically handling the infinite stresses at the crack tip as well as the abrupt change from virgin material to failed material creates numerical instabilities. This project seeks to determine if phase field physics theory, particularly the physics based modification developed by B. N. Cassenti, can be appropriately applied to cracks. Phase field theory introduces an additional state variable, the phase of the material. The phase represents the level of failure (by cracking), and diffuses the failure along a crack by specified equations. The modification, based on a variational principle, was tested …
Investigation Of In-Situ Immobilization Of Contaminated Sediments Using Alginate Gels For The Reduction Of Ecological Risk, Michael V. Podany Mr.
Investigation Of In-Situ Immobilization Of Contaminated Sediments Using Alginate Gels For The Reduction Of Ecological Risk, Michael V. Podany Mr.
Master's Theses
Remediation methods for contaminated sediments include dredging, treatment and disposal and sediment isolation through capping. These methods are costly and adversely impact local ecosystems, in some cases causing major disturbances to the sediment bed and water column. A new remediation technique is proposed for slowly biodegradable contaminants using alginate hydrogels as a binding agent of sediment. The rational is that sediment particles bound in alginate hydrogel are less likely to be resuspended and the treatment is less disruptive than capping. Here we show addition of alginate increased the shear strength of sediment comprised of defined particle sizes. The increase in …
Role Of Tonic Protein Kinase A On Sk2 Channel Expression, Krithika Abiraman
Role Of Tonic Protein Kinase A On Sk2 Channel Expression, Krithika Abiraman
Master's Theses
Small conductance calcium-activated potassium channels (SK) play a fundamental role in synaptic transmission, plasticity, learning and memory (Hammond, 2006; Faber, 2008; Lin et al., 2008) . A very recent study successfully combined single molecule atomic force microscopy (AFM) and toxin pharmacology to quantitatively map SK channels in living neurons (Maciaszek et al., 2012). In addition to localizing native SK channels, this study also showed that SK channel distribution is dynamic with a decrease in SK channel surface expression upon addition of forskolin (FSK), a protein kinase A (PKA) activator. This finding raised further questions about the mechanism through which FSK …
Analysis Of The Enzymatic Decomposition Of Barley Starch To Simple Carbohydrates, Mark Mathiew Williams
Analysis Of The Enzymatic Decomposition Of Barley Starch To Simple Carbohydrates, Mark Mathiew Williams
Master's Theses
The decomposition of barley starch plays a fundamental role in the final quality of fermented beverages in the brewing industry. The process of mashing involves steeping milled barley in water to stimulate the enzymatic decomposition of starch into simple carbohydrates. The temperature of the water significantly impacts the activity of the enzymes and in turn the resulting concentrations of sugar products. A kinetic model accurately predicting the types and quantities of sugars formed as a function of mash temperature would serve as a tool to tailor sugar profiles and optimize mashing procedures for a desired product.
Sixty minutes mashes were …
Detection Of Genomic Inversion From Single End Read, Pankaj Ghimire
Detection Of Genomic Inversion From Single End Read, Pankaj Ghimire
Master's Theses
Structural Variations (SVs) are genomic rearrangements that include both copy-number variants, such as insertion, deletions, duplications and balanced variants like inversion and translocations. These SVs are getting more attentions for research and investigation because of their role on human phenotype, genetic diseases and genomic rearrangements. Evolution of Next-generation Sequencing has provided golden opportunities to investigate these variants and make their wider and clear spectrum in human genome. This investigation includes identification of type of SVs and their breakpoints at base pair level. For their effective identification and breakpoint resolution, many techniques are devised mainly based on paired end read. With relatively low …

Constrains On Freedom Of Expression In Turkey: The Effects Of Article 301, Armine Sargsyan
Constrains On Freedom Of Expression In Turkey: The Effects Of Article 301, Armine Sargsyan
Master's Theses
Concerns over human rights violations in Turkey by the European Union (EU) have hindered the Republic of Turkey’s accession to the EU. Freedom of expression has been denied through a number of laws since the creation of the Republic in 1923. This thesis presents how and why speech has been constrained in Turkey, and it provides an argument that Ottoman history has a direct impact on the country’s politics today. It also examines the implications of legislation that has been applied to silence individuals addressing controversial issues in public. In particular, Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code has been …
The Odious Debt System, Andrew Hanauer
The Odious Debt System, Andrew Hanauer
Master's Theses
Over the past forty years, African countries have accumulated enormous quantities of external debt. Today, this debt is heavily burdensome; money spent on debt service is money that cannot be invested into infrastructure development, health, education, or other areas that might benefit the large number of Africans who live in poverty. Calls for debt forgiveness have led western institutions to forgive a portion of this debt, but have not addressed the question of whether or not this debt is legitimate in the first place.
Similarly, academic proposals for the classification and subsequent repudiation or forgiveness of so-called "odious debt" have …
A Practical Scale For Multi-Faceted Organizational Health Climate Assessment, Zandra M. Zweber
A Practical Scale For Multi-Faceted Organizational Health Climate Assessment, Zandra M. Zweber
Master's Theses
The current study sought to develop a practical scale to measure workplace health climate in a way that has not previously been conceptualized – as a three-faceted approach from the employee perspective serving as an indicator of a healthy organization. The goal was to create a short, useable yet comprehensive scale that could translate into practical use by organizations and occupational health professionals planning workplace interventions. To accomplish this, the proposed multi-faceted organizational health climate scale (MOHCA) assesses three-facets which match up with three organizational levels: 1) organization 2) supervisor and 3) workgroup. Ten items were developed and tested on …
