Evaluation Of The Effects Of Walnut Extract On The Cell Division G2/M Cyclin-Cyclin B1 In Breast Cancer Cells, Savita Pinaki Shah

Master's Theses

Walnuts are rich in polyphenols and have potential for cancer prevention and treatment. Our lab has previously shown that a walnut extract (WE) is able to block the cell cycle at the S and G2 phases of cell division with a corresponding decrease in the amount of the cyclin B1 protein and induce cell death in human breast cancer cells (Le et al., 2014). The aim of the current research was to identify whether this effect on the expression of cyclin B1 was at the transcriptional or the translational level. A cycloheximide (CHX) chase revealed that a WE does not …

The Effects Of Discrete Emotions On Risky Decision Making, Hoeun Sim Jun 2016

The Effects Of Discrete Emotions On Risky Decision Making, Hoeun Sim

Master's Theses

Contrary to the dominant view that generally equates feelings with poor thinking, converging evidence indicates that decisions – including those involving risk – are influenced by affective experiences. Research, however, is limited to studies on undifferentiated, global positive versus negative mood states; less is known about the influence of discrete emotions. The purpose of this research was to extend the affect-cognition literature by (a) examining the effects of discrete emotions varying along the dimensions of valence and arousal, and (b) identifying the systematic ways that discrete emotions underlie risky decision making. We used a set of emotion-laden IAPS images to …

A Sedimentological Analysis Of The Siliciclastic Fraction In Pliocene Core Sediments From Bowers Ridge, Bering Sea (Iodp Exp 323), Melinda Tanner

Master's Theses

The analysis and interpretation of sediment cores constitutes an important data record that can be used to evaluate paleoclimatic conditions and changes over time. The causes for the cooling trend that began in the Eocene, and its intensification with the onset of North Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG), remain under debate. Using sediment core samples from Site U1341 in the Bering Sea, the principal goal of this thesis was to examine the record at 1.9-4.2 Ma, using sedimentologic tools to interpret the siliciclastic fraction and ascertain whether and which portion is due to ice-related input. Previous research estimates the onset to begin …

Trust, Reciprocity, Fairness, And Mind Reading Under Stress, Charles Jia Yao Xie Jun 2016

Trust, Reciprocity, Fairness, And Mind Reading Under Stress, Charles Jia Yao Xie

Master's Theses

Some hypothesized that when stressed, females activate tend-and-befriend, a stress response that enhances social abilities. Yet, critics argued this stress response is not exclusive to females and others suggested that males and females have different stress responses associated with social skills. This study intended to address these criticisms by testing whether males exhibit prosocial responses to stress and if particular stress responses improved social skills. To do this, 70 healthy introductory psychology students from a large public university in northern California were recruited to participate. Using random assignment, half of these individuals were exposed to an acute stressor and another …

Cultural Influences In Political Ideology: Conservatism And Vertical Individualism, Cyrus Sarrafpour Jun 2016

Cultural Influences In Political Ideology: Conservatism And Vertical Individualism, Cyrus Sarrafpour

Master's Theses

After an extensive literature review on authoritarianism and right-wing ideology, Jost, Kruglanski, Glaser, and Sulloway (2003) developed a model of conservatism as motivated social cognition. The model asserts that feelings of uncertainty, fear, and threat stimulate existential, epistemic, and ideological social-cognitive motives, which in turn lead to political conservatism in the forms of resistance to change and endorsement of inequality. The model, however, generally bypassed the notion that situational factors, such as cultural values, might also be influential in the manifestation and shaping of conservative ideologies. This study included situational factors such as the role of a hierarchical cultural dimension …

Evaluation Of The Estrogenic And Osmoregulatory Impacts Of Exposure To 4-Nonylphenol Pollution In The Estuarine Arrow Goby, Clevelandia Ios, Kaitlin Marie Johnson Jun 2016

Evaluation Of The Estrogenic And Osmoregulatory Impacts Of Exposure To 4-Nonylphenol Pollution In The Estuarine Arrow Goby, Clevelandia Ios, Kaitlin Marie Johnson

Master's Theses

Recent evidence indicates that some of California’s coastal estuaries are contaminated with the chemical 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). Tissue burdens of 4-NP detected in the intertidal arrow goby (Clevelandia ios) in California are among the highest recorded worldwide, however, it remains unknown whether these fish are impacted by this 4-NP contamination. 4-NP is an established endocrine disrupting compound with estrogenic properties that can alter reproductive function. Furthermore, evidence that estrogens can modulate iono- and osmo-regulatory function in fishes implies that estuarine fishes exposed to 4-NP may also experience an impaired ability to maintain hydromineral balance. In Chapter 1 of this …

Analysis Of Electromagnetic Launcher Design And Modeling, Garrett Ross Germany Jun 2016

Analysis Of Electromagnetic Launcher Design And Modeling, Garrett Ross Germany

Master's Theses

This thesis derives working expressions from electromagnetic physical laws to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of railguns. The expressions are refined for ease of use and then compared to electromagnetic simulators that solve complex equations that arise from different rail geometry. Further simplifications lead to an expression for the final velocity of the projectile and showcase the importance of the system resistance to projectile flux gain ratio. A Simulink simulation then incorporates the resulting non-linear differential equations and approximates the projectile velocity over time based on physical dimensions and material properties. Some equations derived can be found in …

Lazy Fault Detection For Redundant Mpi, Corey Ford Jun 2016

Lazy Fault Detection For Redundant Mpi, Corey Ford

Master's Theses

As the scale of supercomputers grows, it is becoming increasingly important for software to efficiently withstand hardware and software faults. Process replication is one resilience technique, but typical implementations require replicas to stay closely synchronized with each other. We propose algorithms to lazily detect faults in replicated MPI applications, allowing for more flexibility in replica scheduling and potential power savings. Evaluation shows that, when all processes are operated at full power, this approach allows applications to complete substantially faster as compared to using a synchronized model, and often as fast as in non-replicated execution.

It can be difficult to guide yourself across a crosswalk when your visual capabilities are limited, which can be an everyday issue for someone with impaired vision. This paper aims to alleviate that issue for zebra stripe crosswalks by proposing an algorithm that incorporates multiple properties of zebra stripe crosswalks with a neural network to assist in quickly and accurately identifying a crosswalk in video and pictures taken from a smartphone camera.

This method improves the accuracy of zebra crosswalk detection in images. In a large dataset, it correctly identified 76.5% of zebra crosswalks, while reducing the false discovery rate …

Autonomous Formation Flying And Proximity Operations Using Differential Drag On The Mars Atmosphere, Andres Eduardo Villa Jun 2016

Autonomous Formation Flying And Proximity Operations Using Differential Drag On The Mars Atmosphere, Andres Eduardo Villa

Master's Theses

Due to mass and volume constraints on planetary missions, the development of control techniques that do not require fuel are of big interest. For those planets that have a dense enough atmosphere, aerodynamic drag can play an important role. The use of atmospheric differential drag for formation keeping was first proposed by Carolina L. Leonard in 1986, and has been proven to work in Earth atmosphere by many missions. Moreover, atmospheric drag has been used in the Mars atmosphere as aerobraking technique to decelerate landing vehicles, and to circularize the orbit of the spacecraft. Still, no literature was available related …

Effects Of Bisphenol-A And Styrene On Fertilization And Development Of The Purple Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus), Nicole C. Uibel, Nikki L. Adams, Jennifer Carroll, Sean Lema

Master's Theses

Plastic waste and debris have greatly increased in the marine environment during the past 50 years. Not only do these plastics entangle and get ingested by marine mammals, turtles, and sea birds, but they also leach chemicals, such as bisphenol-A (BPA) and styrene into the aquatic environment. While some of these chemicals are known to be toxic, few studies have examined their effects on broadcast spawning marine invertebrates, specifically at environmentally relevant concentrations. Purple sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, from the central coast of California, were utilized to examine effects of BPA and styrene on fertilization success and early development of …

A Study Of Constant Voltage Anemometry Frequency Response, Alex D. Powers Jun 2016

A Study Of Constant Voltage Anemometry Frequency Response, Alex D. Powers

Master's Theses

The development of the constant voltage anemometer (CVA) for the boundary layer data system (BLDS) has been motivated by a need for the explicit autonomous measurement of velocity fluctuations in the boundary layer. The frequency response of a sensor operated by CVA has been studied analytically and experimentally. The thermal lag of the sensor is quantified by a time constant, MCVA. When the time constant is decreased, the half-amplitude cut-off frequency, fCVA, is increased, thereby decreasing the amount of attenuation during measurements. In this thesis, three main approaches have been outlined in theory and tested experimentally …

Finite Element Modeling Of Delamination Damage In Carbon Fiber Laminates Subject To Low-Velocity Impact And Comparison With Experimental Impact Tests Using Nondestructive Vibrothermography Evaluation, George Rodriguez Iv Jun 2016

Finite Element Modeling Of Delamination Damage In Carbon Fiber Laminates Subject To Low-Velocity Impact And Comparison With Experimental Impact Tests Using Nondestructive Vibrothermography Evaluation, George Rodriguez Iv

Master's Theses

Carbon fiber reinforced composites are utilized in many design applications where high strength, low weight, and/or high stiffness are required. While composite materials can provide high strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios, they are also more complicated to analyze due to their inhomogeneous nature. One important failure mode of composite structures is delamination. This failure mode is common when composite laminates are subject to impact loading.

Various finite element methods for analyzing delamination exist. In this research, a modeling strategy based on contact tiebreak definitions in LS-DYNA®was used. A finite element model of a low-velocity impact event was created to …

This thesis, sponsored by Moaero Company founder, Mr. Harrish Bhutani, intends to determine whether a simply designed centrifuge system can remove a reasonable amount of oil from fried foods after it has been deep fried without adversely affecting the texture of the fried food. Due to a large variety in the texture as well as the type of fried foods, and in order to keep the scope of this thesis more focused and feasible, …

Genes Encoding Flower- And Root-Specific Functions Are More Resistant To Fractionation Than Globally Expressed Genes In Brassica Rapa, Naiyerah F. Kolkailah Jun 2016

Genes Encoding Flower- And Root-Specific Functions Are More Resistant To Fractionation Than Globally Expressed Genes In Brassica Rapa, Naiyerah F. Kolkailah

Master's Theses

Like many angiosperms, Brassica rapa underwent several rounds of whole genome duplication during its evolutionary history. Brassica rapa is particularly valuable for studying genome evolution because it also experienced whole genome triplication shortly after it diverged from the common ancestor it shares with Arabidopsis thaliana about 17-20 million years ago. While many B. rapa genes appear resistant to paralog retention, close to 50% of B. rapa genes have retained multiple, paralogous loci for millions of years and appear to be multi-copy tolerant. Based on previous studies, gene function may contribute to the selective pressure driving certain genes back to singleton …
