Development And Cost-Effectiveness Of A Malnutrition Screening Program In A Skilled Nursing Setting, Emily Salas-Groves
Development And Cost-Effectiveness Of A Malnutrition Screening Program In A Skilled Nursing Setting, Emily Salas-Groves
Master's Theses
Malnutrition increases the cost of healthcare and is commonly unrecognized and untreated. These facts are especially true for healthcare settings that provide care to the elderly. Research emphasizes the need for malnutrition prevention in extended care facilities such as skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) so that patients receive timely and appropriate intervention(s).
The purpose of this study was to retroactively screen SNF patients using four alternative malnutrition screening tools and to compare results to those from the facility screening tool. A second purpose was to estimate differences in potential Medicare reimbursement based on the number of patients identified at risk for …
Finding Our "Happily Ever After": How Poor Fairy-Tale Parenting Breeds A Better Child, Brandie Crain
Finding Our "Happily Ever After": How Poor Fairy-Tale Parenting Breeds A Better Child, Brandie Crain
Master's Theses
This thesis shows how problematic parenting in fairy tales can have a positive influence on children by building their independence and giving them a more realistic and less naïve outlook on life. Fairy tales should not only be present in the childhood of our lives, but throughout every season. Problematic parents are prevalent throughout fairy tales, catalysts for the harm which inevitably comes to their children. However, this harm is usually not their end, as they are forced to self-parent. “All Fur,” “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “The Juniper Tree,” and “Hansel and Gretel” create the idea that parents are sometimes a …
Design And Fabrication Of Fdm 3d Printed Strain Sensors, Austin Smith
Design And Fabrication Of Fdm 3d Printed Strain Sensors, Austin Smith
Master's Theses
As technology related to virtual reality, prosthetics, and robotics advances there appears a need for better sensor technology to augment these systems. In particular, many of the systems must interphase with the human body or the environment while maintaining large amounts of mobility and flexibility. This creates the demand for flexible electronics in particular flexible strain sensors to monitor movement. The work presented here explores the feasibility of commercially available elastic filament and desktop Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing as a simple and cost-effective route to develop flexible single-axis strain sensors. 3D printing allows for the rapid production and …
Metal Segregation During The Solidification Of Titanium-Aluminum Alloys For 3d Printing Applications, Jwala Parajuli
Metal Segregation During The Solidification Of Titanium-Aluminum Alloys For 3d Printing Applications, Jwala Parajuli
Master's Theses
Titanium-Aluminum alloys are one of the widely used alloys in multiple engineering applications. They are highly preferred in Selective Laser Melting (SLM) processes due to their low density, high melting temperature, and good strength. Segregation occurs during the solidification of most alloys and produces a non-uniform distribution of atoms. In SLM, segregation may depict the type of adhesion between the two deposited interfacial layers and the strength between the interphase between an already solidified layer and a new one, and overall, the quality of the printed part. In order to avoid segregation, the understanding of the segregation behavior at atomistic …
Assessing The Adequacy Of The Rate Based System Of Enteral Nutrition Infusion In The Icu Of A Community Hospital, Callie Betman
Assessing The Adequacy Of The Rate Based System Of Enteral Nutrition Infusion In The Icu Of A Community Hospital, Callie Betman
Master's Theses
The rate based system for delivering enteral nutrition has been found to result in an average delivery of 60-65% of estimated energy and protein needs in ICU patients. Interruptions in tube feedings for surgery, intolerances, and turning/bathing cause underfeeding as the rate based system does not allow the rate to be adjusted for any lost volume. At Northwest Hospital, protocol is to calculate the hourly tube feeding rate over 20 hours, and run over 24 hours, in order to adjust for an expected 4 hours of interruptions per day; however, the effectiveness of this protocol has not been studied. The …
Phytonutrient Intake And Body Composition Color Correlations, Ryan Orgeron
Phytonutrient Intake And Body Composition Color Correlations, Ryan Orgeron
Master's Theses
This study evaluated the role of phytonutrient intake on body composition. Both the quantity and types of phytonutrients in diets were analyzed. Fifty (50) subjects (15 males; 35 females) from Thibodaux, Louisiana, were randomly selected to participate. All participants completed three 24-hour food recalls to gather intake data (food and calorie intake). The phytonutrient index (PI) was an established formula used to calculate the percentage (%) of the diet comprised of phytonutrient rich foods. Three different body assessment tools were used to determine body adiposity (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference, and fat percentage).
Participants who met healthy standards for …
Physiological Response Of The Giant Acorn Barnacle, Balanus Nubilus, To Air Exposure, Emily Jane Resner
Physiological Response Of The Giant Acorn Barnacle, Balanus Nubilus, To Air Exposure, Emily Jane Resner
Master's Theses
The giant acorn barnacle, Balanus nubilus, is a resident of the subtidal and low intertidal rocky shoreline on the Pacific Coast of North America (Alaska to Baja California). B. nubilusis notable for having the largest muscle fibers in the animal kingdom; fiber diameters that can exceed 3mm in adults! At such extreme sizes these muscle cells may be at risk for insufficient oxygen delivery to mitochondria owing to low SA:V ratios and long intracellular diffusion distances. Oxygen limitation to these muscles may be further exacerbated during low tide air exposure (emersion) or environmental hypoxia events, which are increasing …

Optimizing A Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reactionprotocol For The Characterization Of Gene Expression In Blood Vesselmimics, Tristin Mcguffick
Master's Theses
Blood vessel mimics (BVMs) are tissue engineered blood vessels that are intended as an intermediate testing environment for intravascular devices, such as stents. Specifically, Cal Poly’s Tissue Engineering Lab hypothesizes that BVMs can be used to test endothelial cell and smooth muscle cell responses to existing and new vascular stents. Characterization techniques are required for BVMs to be accepted as a valid testing model, prior to being employed as an in vitro model to determine the effects of medical treatments. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is one available option for evaluating gene expression of tissues. qPCR can be performed …
Covering A Killer: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Of White Male Mass Murderers In The U.S, Rhys Hall
Covering A Killer: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Of White Male Mass Murderers In The U.S, Rhys Hall
Master's Theses
White men represent a disproportionate number of mass murderers via guns/bombings in the U.S. Though, there may be disparities in how often white masculinity is probed as a conflictual site of socialization when compared with other social racial and gender identities. Holding concern for how masculine violence is criminalized across racial lines, I conduct a review of racial typificiations of Black crime in newspapers to juxtapose with contemporary discourse of white masculine crime.
Using content analysis, I examine hundreds of newspaper publications released from 2011-2016 covering mass killers. I look for tendencies from paper writers to minimize sociological similarities between …

Ban The Box: Outcomes Of Mandatory Disclosure And Predictors Of Voluntary Disclosure Of Criminal History In Job Applications, Ginevra Marta Scherini
Master's Theses
The present study was conducted in order to examine the outcomes of mandatory disclosure of criminal history on the individual during the job application process and predictors of the likelihood of voluntary disclosure. It was hypothesized that having to disclose criminal history would predict higher levels of self-identification with criminal history, higher levels of experienced discrimination, higher levels of perceived stigma, lower levels of attraction towards the organization, lower confidence in obtaining employment, and lower levels of likelihood of voluntary disclosure. It was also hypothesized that environmental support, employment self-efficacy, self-identification with criminal history, and less experienced discrimination would predict …
A Biochemical Study Of The Autocatalytic Nature Of A Serine Protease (Early Trypsin) From The Aedes Aegypti Female Mosquito, Rachael Marie Lucero
A Biochemical Study Of The Autocatalytic Nature Of A Serine Protease (Early Trypsin) From The Aedes Aegypti Female Mosquito, Rachael Marie Lucero
Master's Theses
The female Aedes aegypti mosquito requires specific midgut proteases to digest
blood meals in a biphasic manner for completion of the gonotrophic cycle. The anautogenous nature of the female mosquito has led to the mosquito in becoming an efficient vector in transmitting several bloodborne pathogens: Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, Dengue and the Zika virus. With the many flaws associated with current vector control strategies, our research lab is focused on the development of a potential novel vector control strategy by targeting midgut proteases involved in blood meal digestion. The role of one of the four most abundantly expressed proteases, AaET, an …

A Numerical Study Of The Van Roosbroeck System For Semiconductors, Alan Ghazarians
A Numerical Study Of The Van Roosbroeck System For Semiconductors, Alan Ghazarians
Master's Theses
Since the 1950s, semiconductors have played a significant and daily role in our lives, as they are the foundation of our computers, phones, and other electronic devices. Aside from their obvious uses, the equations that govern semiconductors have peaked the interest of mathematicians and numerical analysts. In 1950, van Roosbroeck described the fundamental semiconductor device equations as a system of three nonlinear coupled partial di↵erential equations. The van Roosbroeck system poses a challenge numerically because of its strong nonlinearity and coupled equations. Its diculties lie in simultaneously solving drift-di↵usion equations for electrons and holes and using their solutions to solve …
Autonomy In Video Games And Gamification, Jonathan Leventhal
Autonomy In Video Games And Gamification, Jonathan Leventhal
Master's Theses
In the past decade, gamification (using game elements in non-gaming tasks to enhance motivation and engagement) has become a popular concept in many industries, but few studies have explored the principles under which it works. Self-determination theory suggests three psychological needs that gamification fulfills: competence, relatedness, and autonomy. Autonomy, a person's perception that they have the ability to act however they choose, has emerged as an important, yet less-studied aspect in gamification. Inclusion of autonomy in gamification should foster engagement, enjoyment, and better performance. An experiment inspired by the above was carried out in which a sample of college students …
Computational Models Exploring The Role Of Flexibility In Binding Tat Peptide To Tar Rna, Thanh Quoc Le
Computational Models Exploring The Role Of Flexibility In Binding Tat Peptide To Tar Rna, Thanh Quoc Le
Master's Theses
Viral-encoded regulatory proteins interacting with RNA target sequences control the gene expression of lentiviruses, notably the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV). The latter provides a simpler interaction model between the viral trans-activator protein (Tat) and trans-activation response RNA element (TAR), including Tat peptides binding to TAR RNA fragments. This model may offer insights into clinical approaches for treatment, initially through theoretical consideration of the role of peptide flexibility in binding as evidenced by literature-based binding assays and NMR. It has more recently been suggested that DNA-protein binding may also be enhanced by increases in conformational entropy. …
Heat Transfer Interface To Graphitic Foam, Fang-Ming Lin
Heat Transfer Interface To Graphitic Foam, Fang-Ming Lin
Master's Theses
The A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS (ATLAS) strip tracking detector is scheduled to be upgraded in 2025. The order of magnitude for the hit densities and the radiation damage are expected to increase. When radiation increases, the leakage current increases and the heat generated at the silicon trackers can lead to thermal runaway. Cooling is critical in these detectors.
In this study, a glassy graphitic foam was developed by AllComp Inc.~as a precursor to the adhesives (glues). Graphene\textsc{\char13}s highly anisotropic thermal properties result in high thermal conductivity in the planar direction, while it is low in the normal direction. In these …

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is an analytical technique used to separate, identify and quantify components in a solution based on the affinities between analyte, mobile phase and stationary phase. The main goal of my research is to characterize four Type-C silica columns by comparing the retention of resveratrol analogues. The four columns included are functionalized with either Diamond Bidentate C18 (DBC18), Bidentate C18 (BC18), phenyl hydride or diol groups. Retention maps displaying mobile phase composition compared to compound retention times were compared between columns. In addition to this, two organic solvents (acetonitrile and methanol) were compared. Considering that the …
Numerical Studies Of Turbulence Effects In Cross-Flow Ventilation, Mina Mohammadmirzaei
Numerical Studies Of Turbulence Effects In Cross-Flow Ventilation, Mina Mohammadmirzaei
Master's Theses
Natural ventilation systems reduce a building’s utilization of energy in terms of electricity consumption and fossil fuel usage. Many factors including building shape, window style and configuration, and wind turbulence impact the efficacy of natural ventilation. In order to investigate the effect of turbulence on natural ventilation, twelve different conditions of a cross-flow ventilated room were studied numerically using computational fluid dynamics. Wind tunnel studies of tracer gases in a scale model were used to validate the numerical results. A comparison of twelve investigated cases shows that air circulation inside a natural ventilated room is only slightly affected by turbulence, …

Changes In The Elasmobranch Assemblage In A California Estuary, Catarina Pien
Master's Theses
Elkhorn Slough is an estuarine system that provides habitat for several elasmobranch species. During the past century, the hydrography and habitat of Elkhorn Slough have dramatically changed. Previous studies suggest shifts in the species composition and habitat usage patterns of elasmobranchs. This study characterizes the elasmobranch species composition, and examines the abiotic conditions associated with differences in distribution by sex and life stage. Elasmobranchs were sampled from 2015 –2016 by longline and gillnet. Bat rays (Myliobatis californicus), leopard sharks (Triakis semifasciata), and thornback rays (Platyrhinoidis triseriata) were most commonly observed, and were generally more abundant during the dry seasons and …
All Eyes On You: The Impact Of Increased Surveillance And Media Publicity On Police Identity, Sara Serpa Rodrigues
All Eyes On You: The Impact Of Increased Surveillance And Media Publicity On Police Identity, Sara Serpa Rodrigues
Master's Theses
The recent surge in media footage surrounding police killings of unarmed black men clearly signifies the national concern for police violence, yet researchers have yet to study police identity in connection with such publicized inequality. This qualitative study closes this gap in research by addressing the following questions: “How do patrolling officers think about and experience their jobs at this particular historical juncture of increased internet and media exposure?” and, “How does the mass exposure and scrutiny of police violence shape police perceptions of their work and impact their work identity?” Face to face semi-structured interviews, symbolic interactionism, and interpretive …

Job Level And Job Family As Predictors Of Preferences For The Physical Environment, Rachel Smith
Job Level And Job Family As Predictors Of Preferences For The Physical Environment, Rachel Smith
Master's Theses
Previous research shows that the physical work environment is related to various work-related employee outcomes. However, researchers have not focused on employee preferences for the physical work environment, nor predictors of such preferences. The current study proposed that job level and job family might predict employee preferences for the layout and design of work environments. The study also examined gender and age as moderators of the relationship between job level and employee preferences, and the relationship between job family and employee preferences. The results of online surveys from 157 employees of a medical technology company showed that job level predicted …

Micrometeorological Observations Of Fire-Atmosphere Interactions And Fire Behavior On A Simple Slope, Jonathan Marc Contezac
Micrometeorological Observations Of Fire-Atmosphere Interactions And Fire Behavior On A Simple Slope, Jonathan Marc Contezac
Master's Theses
An experiment was designed to capture micrometeorological observations
during a fire spread on a simple slope. Three towers equipped with a variety of
instrumentation, an array of fire-sensing packages, and a Doppler lidar was
deployed to measure various aspects of the fire. Pressure and temperature
perturbations were analyzed for each of the grid packages to determine if the fire
intensity could be observed in the covariance of the two variables. While two of
the packages measured a covariance less than -15 °C hPa, there was no clear
trend across the grid. The fire front passage at each of the three …
A Glottometric Subgrouping Of The Early Germanic Languages, Joshua Agee
A Glottometric Subgrouping Of The Early Germanic Languages, Joshua Agee
Master's Theses
Historical Glottometry, introduced by Alexandre François (2014), is a wave-based quantitative approach to language subgrouping that is used to calculate the overall strength of a linguistic subgroup using metrics that capture the contributions of linguistic innovations of various scopes to language diversification, in consideration of the reality of their distributions. It primarily achieves this by acknowledging the contribution of areal diffusion to language diversification, which has traditionally been overlooked in cladistic (tree-based) models. In this thesis, the development of the Germanic language family, from the breakup of Proto-Germanic to the latest period of the early attested daughter languages (namely Gothic, …
Objects Of Politics, Objects Of Art: Three Studies On The Display Of American Political Prints, Ricardo Chavez
Objects Of Politics, Objects Of Art: Three Studies On The Display Of American Political Prints, Ricardo Chavez
Master's Theses
Fueled by the radical political thinking of the 1960s and beyond, people in the United States produced artistic responses in the form of political prints and posters for both documenting and actively galvanizing the popular movements of this era. This study analyzes the display of these prints and posters within an art-viewing context. It argues that, with characteristics of both objects of politics and objects of art, these works possess dynamic meaning that can be impacted by the institutional narratives of the locations in which they reside. Looking at three examples of political print exhibitions organized individually by the Museum …
