An Examination Of Women's Access To Professional Positions In Hospital Foundations, Bettina Kohlbrenner Dec 1996

An Examination Of Women's Access To Professional Positions In Hospital Foundations, Bettina Kohlbrenner

Master's Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which professional women in hospital foundations perceive career barriers in their organizations-particularly whether women in mid-level management perceive greater barriers to their career advancement than do women in senior-level management. The researcher also strove to identify the barriers identified in the literature review that women felt were the most significant in their organizations.

A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 204 women in 113 hospital foundations in California. The subjects were selected from the membership directory of the Association of Philanthropy. The questionnaire was designed to collect three types of …

The Relationship Between Alumni Relations And Fund-Raising: A Study On The Effect Of Departmental Integration On Alumni Giving, Susan M. Todaro Nov 1996

The Relationship Between Alumni Relations And Fund-Raising: A Study On The Effect Of Departmental Integration On Alumni Giving, Susan M. Todaro

Master's Theses

This study examined the effect of integration between alumni relations and development departments on alumni giving. Integration was defined as the degree to which members of alumni and development departments achieve unity of effort. To determine the level of integration, the study looked at organizational structure, collective planning, collaboration, communication, and participation.

As a primary focus, the study measured the level of interdepartmental integration and compared the results with actual alumni giving at each school. The study also compared the level of integration between schools with centralized and decentralized organizational structures.

The study demonstrated an inverse relationship between interdepartmental integration …

A Study Of Fraud In African-American Civil War Pensions : Augustus Parlett Lloyd, Pension Attorney, 1882-1909, Carrie Kiewitt Nov 1996

A Study Of Fraud In African-American Civil War Pensions : Augustus Parlett Lloyd, Pension Attorney, 1882-1909, Carrie Kiewitt

Master's Theses

This work examines fraud in the United States Civil War Military Pension system from 1882-1909 by showing how one attorney, Augustus Parlett Lloyd, defrauded the government on numerous occasions without ever being punished. Research for this work was conducted by studying a group of seventy-three African-American veterans who relied on Lloyd to assist in the application process and by using federal pension records, the manuscript census records, vital statistics, records of the federal Pension Bureau, and several secondary works to explore how Lloyd related to his clients, his associates and the Pension Bureau. This study concludes that Lloyd, the most …

The Silver Bullet Hypothesis : Case Studies Of Post-Webster Virginia Gubernatorial Elections, Anne M. Morgan Nov 1996

The Silver Bullet Hypothesis : Case Studies Of Post-Webster Virginia Gubernatorial Elections, Anne M. Morgan

Master's Theses

The 1989 Webster vs. Reproductive Health Services U.S. Supreme Court decision triggered a "new politics of abortion," marked by a shift in venue of the abortion political debate to the states and by invigorated mobilization of pro-choice activists alarmed about a potential erosion of abortion rights in state laws. Surfacing in the wake of the decision was a "silver bullet" theory of abortion: that unrestricted support for legal abortion guarantees a candidate's electoral victory. Case studies of two post-Webster gubernatorial elections in Virginia fail to confirm the validity of the silver bullet theory. Public opinion findings reveal that the electorate …

A Case Study The Effects Of A Powerful Committee Chair On The Passage Of The Wilderness Bill, Kenneth S. Livingston Aug 1996

A Case Study The Effects Of A Powerful Committee Chair On The Passage Of The Wilderness Bill, Kenneth S. Livingston

Master's Theses

The case of the Wilderness Bill reveals several important insights into the process, policy and politics of wilderness legislation in the late 1950s and early 1960's. The process generally conformed well with the expectations of a strong committee chair model that characterized Congress during the late 1950s and early 1960s. To be sure, the politics involved accommodation of competing interests and was facilitated by a president eager to pass a pro-wilderness bill. Above all, the compromise which ultimately led to the passage of the Wilderness Bill was influenced by the powerful committee chairman of the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee …

The Effects Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid On The Diazotrophic Soil Microbial Community, Denise M. Brown Aug 1996

The Effects Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid On The Diazotrophic Soil Microbial Community, Denise M. Brown

Master's Theses

This study measures the effects of 2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on growth and nitrogen fixation capabilities of the native microbial soil community during eight field trials conducted over an eight month period. After application of 2,4-D, soil samples were analyzed for enumeration of diazotrophic and general microbial communities, and for nitrogenase activity as measured by the acetylene reduction assay (ARA). Statistical analyses were conducted using Minitab. Results show that 2,4-D significantly stimulated growth of diazotrophic microbes in 87.5% of the trials and was found to have a stimulatory growth effect on the general microbes in 62.5% of the trials. A …

The Effect Of Thyroid Hormone On The Expression Of A7 Myosin Heavy Chain Mrna In Xenopus Laevis, Bradley Thomas Butkovich Aug 1996

The Effect Of Thyroid Hormone On The Expression Of A7 Myosin Heavy Chain Mrna In Xenopus Laevis, Bradley Thomas Butkovich

Master's Theses

It has long been known that thyroid hormone (TH) is responsible for metamorphosis in tadpoles. It is also known that A7 MHC, an adult muscle isoform, is expressed in adult Xenopus laevis frogs, but not in larvae. Furthermore, the appearance of A7 corresponds with the onset of metamorphosis. The present study investigated the relationship between TH and the expression of A7 MHC mRNA in Xenopus laevis. Isolated tails in culture and 6-n-propyl 2-thiouracil (PTU) treated tails were treated with TH and the presence of A7 mRNA analyzed with in-situ hybridization, and RT-PCR. It was found that TH caused substantial …

A Glorious Feast For The Eyes : The Roles Of Iconography And Sight In Chaucer's The Prioress's Tale And The Second Nun's Tale, Kelly Marie Bruce Aug 1996

A Glorious Feast For The Eyes : The Roles Of Iconography And Sight In Chaucer's The Prioress's Tale And The Second Nun's Tale, Kelly Marie Bruce

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates Chaucer's use of iconography and sight in The Prioress's Tale and The Second Nun's Tale and how these elements symbiotically support and enhance the text so that the tales themselves become iconic. An overview of medieval religious practices and doctrines is followed by a discussion of The Prioress's Tale, in which Chaucer's direct reference to a Virgin icon is explored. Further, the analysis focuses on the way in which visual cues supplement the meaning of the written word. A discussion of The Second Nun's Tale follows, exploring the relationship between sight and faith. The importance of …
