Multi-Goal Path Planning For Inventory Tracking, Christian E. Aguirre
Multi-Goal Path Planning For Inventory Tracking, Christian E. Aguirre
Master's Theses
Inventory tracking plays an important role in modern warehouse management. An automated storage and retrieval system using robots can mitigate manual labor strain, reduce operational and labor costs, and improve efficiency.
Path planning is an integral component in the design and application of autonomous vehicles. In this thesis, various path planning algorithms based on RRT (rapidly exploring random trees) and RRT* (optimal rapidly exploring random trees) are studied and compared in three simulated environments with obstacles. Computer simulation results show that, the modified RRT* algorithm with node reuse achieves the best performance (i.e. the shortest path) with reasonable computational cost …
Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Master's Theses
This thesis acts as one of the first studies that analyzes the safety effects of Edge Lane Roads (ELR) for all road users. This is important since ELRs can be a solution to many issues, such as alleviating congestion, increasing multimodality along roadways, and reducing maintenance costs. ELRs in both North America and Australia were observed. Starting with the North American ELRs, the following study designs were employed to estimate the safety of ELRs: (a) yoked comparison where each ELR installation was matched with at least two comparable 2-lane roads to serve as comparison sites and (b) an Empirical Bayes …
Exploration And Comparison Of Image-Based Techniques For Strawberry Detection, Yongxin Liu
Exploration And Comparison Of Image-Based Techniques For Strawberry Detection, Yongxin Liu
Master's Theses
Strawberry is an important cash crop in California, and its supply accounts for 80% of the US market [2]. However, in current practice, strawberries are picked manually, which is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. In addition, the farmers need to hire an appropriate number of laborers to harvest the berries based on the estimated volume. When overestimating the yield, it will cause a waste of human resources, while underestimating the yield will cause the loss of the strawberry harvest [3]. Therefore, accurately estimating harvest volume in the field is important to farmers. This paper focuses on an image-based solution to detect …
Design And Synthesis Of Fluorescent Silica Nanoparticle Conjugates For Metal Ion Sensing Applications, Hank Deuermeyer
Design And Synthesis Of Fluorescent Silica Nanoparticle Conjugates For Metal Ion Sensing Applications, Hank Deuermeyer
Master's Theses
A novel series of fluorescent nanoparticle conjugates were designed and synthesized for the selective turn-off sensing of low concentrations of Cu2+ ion (nM-μM) in 2:1 ethanol:10 mM HEPES (pH 7). Silica nanoparticles (~250 nm) were modified with heterobifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) linkers and a third generation PAMAM dendron to function as chelator for Cu2+ ions. The organic dye fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was subsequently conjugated to the dendron to act as a fluorescent sensitizer for the nanoparticle that is quenched upon the binding of Cu2+. Fluorescent nanoparticle conjugates using third and fourth generation PAMAM dendrimers (SNP-G3-FITC and SNP-G4-FITC) were synthesized for …
An Investigation Of Antenna, Ligand Side-Chain, And Metal Ion Effects On The Optical And Mri Properties Of Bimodal Lanthanide (Iii) Complexes, Marisa Poveda
Master's Theses
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a leading anatomical imaging modality for disease diagnosis. With the aid of Gd3+ based contrast agents, high resolution images of biological structures can be obtained. However, there is an increased need for contrast agents that are responsive to specific analytes and chemical environments. Paramagnetic Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (PARACEST) agents that utilize a paramagnetic lanthanide ion chelated with a ligand have shown great promise in this area. Lanthanide ions also possess luminescence properties that do not suffer from common limitations of conventional optical imaging agents such as autofluorescence and photobleaching. The projects described in …
Solar Pv Feasibility Study On Higher Education Institutions In Connecticut, Sai Pujitha Karanam
Solar Pv Feasibility Study On Higher Education Institutions In Connecticut, Sai Pujitha Karanam
Master's Theses
One of the most common issue in Connecticut (CT) is the high electricity rates. CT stands among the top five states for its high electric rates due to limitation in transmission facilities and storage of natural gas. Education institutions serve as good places to install photovoltaic systems as they have a large number of buildings available. Photovoltaic systems are a growing alternative energy source that reduces the electricity demand and hence higher education institutions should start implementing these technologies to reduce the burden of paying more for electricity bills.
The primary objective of the study was to analyze the economic …

Electrospray Printing: An Advanced Technique For Processing Polymers Into Thin Films For Membrane Applications, Tulasi Ravindran
Master's Theses
This thesis deals with the scope and prospects of the novel technology for electrospray printing to process polymers for liquid filtration membrane applications. First, the ability to explore novel reaction media to tune polyamide properties was demonstrated. Aromatic polyamides for reverse osmosis membranes are made by interfacial polymerization. Conventionally, interfacial polymerization is an in situ polycondensation of a diamine and an acid chloride conducted on a porous support at the interface of two immiscible solvents. Using electrospray printing, different solvent media were used to print polyamides on to ultrafiltration support membranes. It was observed that polar protic solvents formed membranes …

Evaluation Of Winter Weather Prediction During Extreme Snowfall Events And Analysis On Wind Gust Prediction For Non-Convective Rain And Wind Events, Michael Walters
Master's Theses
Numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are important tools used by federal agencies and the weather enterprise to inform and warn the public about extreme weather events. Snowstorm forecasts, which can be highly impactful throughout the Northeast United States, face challenges related to microphysical and initial and boundary layer processes that hinder the accuracy of forecasts. In addition, observations of mixed phase precipitation are very sparse spatially and temporally which causes an added challenge to validate predictions. This study presents an evaluation of 38 significant snowstorms and 18 rain/wind events from 2005 to 2020 using three NWP models. Each modeling system …
Galilean Invariance In Large-Eddy Simulation Of Shallow Convection, Oumaima Lamaakel
Galilean Invariance In Large-Eddy Simulation Of Shallow Convection, Oumaima Lamaakel
Master's Theses
In large-eddy simulations (LES) a computational-domain translation velocity can be used to improve performance by allowing longer time-step intervals. The continuous equations are Galilean invariant, however, standard finite-difference-based discretizations are not discretely invariant with the error being proportional to the product of the local translation velocity and the truncation error. Even though such numerical errors are expected to be small, it is shown that in LES of buoyant convection the turbulent large-scale flow organization can modulate and amplify the error. Galilean invariance of global flow statistics is observed in well-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS). In LES of single-phase convection under …
Applying Transit Accessibility Metrics To Locating Affordable Housing, Robert Walsh Smith
Applying Transit Accessibility Metrics To Locating Affordable Housing, Robert Walsh Smith
Master's Theses
The location of affordable housing in the United States is greatly influenced by how it is funded, and current funding criteria does not make wide use of comprehensive accessibility metrics. To show the benefits of using a comprehensive metric to locate affordable housing, one such metric, the TOI, was compared with more simple measures of transit access in a case study. A qualitative assessment of the comprehensive transit metric showed improvements over a simpler measure currently used by an affordable housing program. Statistical modeling was also performed to see if the TOI could better predict whether households had adequate transit …
High Pressure Combustor Flame And Wall Conjugate Radiative Heat Transfer, Andressa Johnson
High Pressure Combustor Flame And Wall Conjugate Radiative Heat Transfer, Andressa Johnson
Master's Theses
Efficient aeronautical engines operate at higher pressure ratios and temperature, creating challenges due to higher heat loads. Thermal radiation in aviation has conventionally been treated as correction factors or scaled from experimental data. The complexity of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) leads to computational costly solutions resulting in simplified treatment. The goal of this work is to extend knowledge of non-gray gas radiation modeling to gas-turbine combustor simulations under high-pressure conditions. A one-dimensional temperature solver for combustor liners with thermal barrier coating is developed first, and a non-gray wide-band spectral model for high-pressure conditions is constructed subsequently. Both retrieve spectral …

Human Intention Inference Using Fusion Of Gaze And Motion Information, Daniel Trombetta
Master's Theses
Enabling robots with the ability to quickly and accurately determine the intention of their human counterparts is a very important problem in Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC). The focus of this work is to provide a framework wherein multiple modalities of information, available to the robot through different sensors, are fused to estimate a human's action intent. In this thesis, two human intention estimation schemes are presented. In both cases, human intention is defined as a motion profile associated with a single goal location. The first scheme presents the first human intention estimator to fuse information from pupil tracking data as well …

Cloud Cover And Pv Intermittence: Monitoring, Forecasting And Its Economical Value, Aaron Haegele
Cloud Cover And Pv Intermittence: Monitoring, Forecasting And Its Economical Value, Aaron Haegele
Master's Theses
The use of all-sky cameras and ancillary sensor equipment to monitor and to adjust fine resolution short range predictions of cloud cover offers an opportunity to develop efficient energy management systems. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is a variable renewable energy resource since solar irradiance is highly sensitive to the intermittent nature of cloud cover. Thus, tracking and characterizing clouds passing over PV areas is a critical factor when predicting the available energy of solar sources at any given time. Capital and operational costs associated with solar PV implementation are affected when inaccurate predictions are carried out. This research uses a …

Development Of A Nomogram To Predict The Maximum Contact Stress Between A Bridge I-Girder And A Support Roller, Thanin Chanmalai
Master's Theses
The incremental launching method (ILM) is one of the methods of bridge construction located in environmentally sensitive areas. During the bridge launching, there are significant contact stress issues at the contact regions between the launching system and the steel bridge girders. The Iowa River Bridge (IRB) is a case study of bridge construction that used the ILM during a steel I-girders installation. Contact stress can cause severe defects during launch, which can occur within the material where the material could be damaged.
Hertz contact theory is applied for calculating contact stress between two solid surfaces, which is initially derived from …

Evaluation Of Engineered Thermal Refuge In Streams As A Climate Warming Mitigation Strategy For Fish Populations Experiencing Thermal Stress, Rebekah Thielman
Evaluation Of Engineered Thermal Refuge In Streams As A Climate Warming Mitigation Strategy For Fish Populations Experiencing Thermal Stress, Rebekah Thielman
Master's Theses
Rising summer stream temperatures threaten the habitat of cold-water fishes globally. Streams with cold groundwater seeps can provide thermal refuge, however natural groundwater discharge is often patchy throughout watersheds, impacting habitat connectivity. This research was undertaken to evaluate the potential to engineer (active pumping) thermal refuge that mimic cold groundwater seeps under a range of natural streamflow conditions and varying cold-water injection rates. Natural groundwater averaging 10 °C was pumped into the river channel behind a removable baffle, used to inhibit mixing and dispersal of the groundwater plume. A fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing cable was deployed above the streambed, downstream …

Maleic Anhydride Compatibilized Peach Waste As Filler In Polypropylene And High Density Polyethylene Biocomposites, Caralyn Wong, Stephanie Jung, Joongmin Shin, Ajay Kathuria
Master's Theses
It is estimated that roughly 103, 515 tons of peach waste is produced annually in the US. The majority of the waste is disposed of in landfills, which contributes to climate change as they release 93 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Peach waste principally consists of remaining stone and seed after flesh removal. The agro-waste includes both cellulose and lignin, which can be utilized as a filler in plastic packaging to reduce carbon footprints and material cost. The objectives of this research are (1) to develop peach flour (PF)-filled biocomposites with a polyolefin matrix using maleic anhydride-g-high density …

The Use Of Low-Cost Sensors And A Convolutional Neural Network To Detect And Classify Mini-Drones, Austin Florio
Master's Theses
The increasing commercial availability of mini-drones and quadrotors has led to their greater usage, highlighting the need for detection and classification systems to ensure safe operation. Instances of drones causing serious complications since 2019 alone include shutting down airports [1-2], spying on individuals [3-4], and smuggling drugs and prohibited items across borders and into prisons [5-6]. Some regulatory measures have been taken, such as registration of drones above a specific size and the establishment of no-fly zones in sensitive areas such as airports, military bases, and national parks. While commercial systems exist to detect drones [7-8], they are expensive, unreliable, …
Additive Manufacturing Of Binary Alloy A Phase Field Approach, Manoj Ghosh
Additive Manufacturing Of Binary Alloy A Phase Field Approach, Manoj Ghosh
Master's Theses
A phase-field approach is pursued to study the solidification of binary alloys, and equations governing the kinetics of the phase transformation are derived. The Ginzburg Landau equation and Cahn Hilliard equation were developed for the binary alloy phasefield model, considering both free energy minimization and conservation of mass. The analytical solutions for a dilute solution alloy are derived. For the thin interface limit, the correlation between the phase-field mobility and kinetic interface coefficient is developed, neglecting the diffusivity at the solid side. For a one-dimensional steady-state condition, along with the diffuse interface, the concentration profile is established as a function …

The Megaprocessor As An Educational Tool Making The Abstract Concrete, Jonathon Beauregard Ii
Master's Theses
Computer architecture courses can be difficult for students to engage with and learn from. This is because, unlike most core courses for a computer science student, learning architecture is an abstract process. To address this, universities have implemented methods for teaching course material other than purely descriptive methods. This typically means using simulations to model some aspect of a CPU or FPGA (fieldprogrammable gate array) boards for hands-on experimentation in CPU design. However, there are issues with these tools. Simulations can only cover a few topics well, are prone to being abandoned, and introduce additional abstraction layers. FPGAs, while great …
Flexure Strength Enhancement Study In Geopolymer Mortar, Victor Bivens
Flexure Strength Enhancement Study In Geopolymer Mortar, Victor Bivens
Master's Theses
This thesis includes the structural enhancement study on the flexible or semi-rigid design of geopolymer mortar (GPM) to address tensile cracking commonly found at the invert of reinforced concrete pipes. Concrete pipes are often subjected to harsh sewer conditions, which eventually spread to the reinforcement skeleton through the resulting cracks and corrode it to cause premature structural failure of the pipe. Therefore, this added flexibility to the pipes’ rigid material will not only serve to limit corrosion of the steel reinforcement within the pipes but will also aid in increasing the structural stability of the pipe in its entirety. The …

In September 2013, the US Colorado Front Range experienced an extreme rainfall event causing mass flooding in the region. Many Front Range rivers were impacted and subsequently restored, especially those adjacent to roadways. Channel restoration practices often lack a standard approach, and evaluating project success is usually lacking. An assessment framework was developed incorporating both ecological and geomorphic variables in addition to project-specific objectives, applied to the Little Thompson River. Topographic and functional traits vegetation surveys were conducted at both the restored reach and an upstream reference reach, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the knowledge of best practices …
Interrelationships Among Monorchiid Trematodes With Special Emphasis On Some Northwestern Atlantic Genera, Apryle Panyi
Interrelationships Among Monorchiid Trematodes With Special Emphasis On Some Northwestern Atlantic Genera, Apryle Panyi
Master's Theses
The Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911 is a cosmopolitan family of flukes (Trematoda: Digenea) comprising species that parasitize the digestive tract of estuarine and marine fishes as adults. Compared with other oceans, recent morphological or molecular taxonomic work conducted on monorchiid species from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean has been sparse (Manter, 1931; Overstreet, 1969; Andres et al., 2018; Wee et al., 2018, 2019, 2020). Therefore, the present work investigated the interrelationships of some monorchiids from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean with emphasis on several genera and investigated if Lasiotocus minutus (Manter, 1931) Thomas, 1959 constitutes a complex of cryptic species. New morphological and …
Freshwater Endmembers Impacting Carbonate Chemistry In The Mississippi Sound, Allison Savoie
Freshwater Endmembers Impacting Carbonate Chemistry In The Mississippi Sound, Allison Savoie
Master's Theses
Coastal ecosystems are highly dynamic areas for carbon cycling and are likely to be negatively impacted by increasing ocean acidification. This research focused on dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in the Mississippi Sound in order to understand the influence of local rivers that supply alkalinity to the area and buffer against ocean acidification. This area receives large fluxes of freshwater from local rivers, in addition to episodic inputs from the Mississippi River through a human-built diversion, the Bonnet Carré Spillway. Sites in the Mississippi Sound were sampled monthly during August 2018 to November 2019 and at weekly …
