Integrated Senior Housing, Kyungok Ha Jun 2014

Integrated Senior Housing, Kyungok Ha

Master's Theses

It is difficult to have an integrated population throughout all age strata in a society. Especially if one considers the growing percentage of the aged population and their feeling alienated in their current physical surroundings. In order to solve imminent problems with the growing elderly population, a primary task should be considering how to improve the housing of senior citizens. Furthermore, bringing the youth and elderly together would produce a functioning self-help system. It engenders interaction strategies by employing the strengths of one generation to serve another generation’s needs. This idea was introduced by the systemic family therapist Gerhard Schiele. …

Oceano Community Health Plan, Eugene Phillip Brennan Jun 2014

Oceano Community Health Plan, Eugene Phillip Brennan

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Oceano Community Health Plan

Phillip Brennan

Recent, mounting research shows that chronic disease, the leading causes of death and primary driver of health care costs, cannot be effectively addressed through education or preventative health alone. A physical environment that promotes health—through access to healthy food, opportunities for physical activity, quality housing, transportation options, and safe schools—is an integral part of making our communities healthier. This research and accompanying Healthy Community Plans will serve as a way for the County to begin looking in-depth at the ways the built environment (our streets, parks, and neighborhoods) contribute or detract from the …

The Role Of Sirtuin Inhibitors On The Proteomic Responses Of The Mussels Mytilus Galloprovincialis And Mytilus Trossulus To Menadione Induced Oxidative Stress, Hayley C. Chilton Jun 2014

The Role Of Sirtuin Inhibitors On The Proteomic Responses Of The Mussels Mytilus Galloprovincialis And Mytilus Trossulus To Menadione Induced Oxidative Stress, Hayley C. Chilton

Master's Theses

Global climate change imposes physiological constraints on marine ecosystems that can alter the distribution of intertidal organisms. In one such instance, the native cold-adapted mussel Mytilus trossulus is being replaced along its southern range by the invasive warm-adapted Mytilus galloprovincialis. These blue mussels occur throughout rocky intertidal zones where they are subjected to greatly varying environmental conditions known to induce oxidative stress. We hypothesize that while under acute stress, related Mytilus congeners undergo a shift in redox potential from NADH-fueled respiratory pathways to pathways producing NADPH as a way to decrease the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and …

Protist Facilitated Transport In An Artificial Soil Micromodel, Rebecca L. Rubinstein May 2014

Protist Facilitated Transport In An Artificial Soil Micromodel, Rebecca L. Rubinstein

Master's Theses

The soil microhabitat contains a complex network of microbial, biochemical, and physical interactions, all of which have very important implications for remediation technologies as well as agriculture. As a result, observing and quantifying this environment has been of recurring interest to scientists and engineers, but by nature many of these processes are difficult if not impossible to observe in situ. To that end, we have developed techniques utilizing soil-structured microfluidic devices for direct observation of soil microbial processes. Specifically, natural soil protists were observed moving through fabricated artificial soil networks, and their impact on the spatial and temporal distribution …

Learning Together: A Case Study Of A Cooperative School’S Approach To Education, Ariana M. Ali May 2014

Learning Together: A Case Study Of A Cooperative School’S Approach To Education, Ariana M. Ali

Master's Theses

This thesis is based on an in-depth case study of one cooperative pre-preschool and preschool in San Francisco. Qualitative research methods, such as observation and one-on-one interviews, were used to study the structure, culture, and community at the school. Cooperative schools have not been well researched or documented in academic literature and this study hoped to shed some light on this model of school organization. The parent-initiated and community-oriented nature of cooperative schools make them stand out as unique among the large, bureaucratically-run schools and daycares typically found in the United States. The results of this study highlighted four themes …

Glass Foundation Chemosensor Synthesis And Functionality Analysis, Justin D. Dancer May 2014

Glass Foundation Chemosensor Synthesis And Functionality Analysis, Justin D. Dancer

Master's Theses

Chemosensors are created through a series of reaction steps on controlled pore class (CPG) and terminate with a Cu2+ metal binding site. Each monolayer of reactant insures that the metal binding site exposed to solution would serve as an indicator displacement assay (IDA) sensor. The purpose of this research is to create a molecular sensor with a high density of terminal metal sites to quantify bidentate substrates. To accomplish this, each synthetic step of the sensor is examined in order to test the effects of new linkers, ligands, and variously sized dendrimers to see if small structural changes could …

Peg-Based Fluorescent Hydrogel For Glucose Biosensing, Gayathri Srinivasan May 2014

Peg-Based Fluorescent Hydrogel For Glucose Biosensing, Gayathri Srinivasan

Master's Theses

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder caused due to lack of insulin production by pancreatic islet cells (Type I) or underutilization of insulin produced in the pancreas (Type II). Complications arising due to this disease can be minimized by vigilant monitoring of blood glucose levels. In this study, a fluorescent enzymatic hydrogel was designed for rapid glucose detection. The glucose-responsive hydrogel was formed by polymerizing multi-arm poly (ethylene glycol), glucose oxidase and serum albumin with aminomethylcoumarin as fluorophore. The sensing mechanism relies on enzymatic catalysis of glucose, that protonates the pH sensitive aminomethylcoumarin, resulting in a fluorescence “turn-on” response. …

High Order Statistics Of Natural And Manmade Sounds, Rahul Narayan May 2014

High Order Statistics Of Natural And Manmade Sounds, Rahul Narayan

Master's Theses

Environmental sounds, both man-made and natural, vary on multiple time and frequency scales generating a large range of temporal, spectral and amplitude modulations that are evident in the high-order statistics of the sound spectrogram. Healthy hearing humans perceive high-order statistical regularities and use this information to categorize and discriminate sounds. This paper tests the hypothesis that biologically motivated sound statistics can enable/enhance discrimination and identification of sound categories from a computational standpoint. A large catalogue of natural and man-made sounds and their associated high-order contrast and intensity statistics were developed, and the information carrying content of each statistic for sound …

The Stress Response To An Acute Heavy Resistance Exercise Protocol, Adam J. Sterczala May 2014

The Stress Response To An Acute Heavy Resistance Exercise Protocol, Adam J. Sterczala

Master's Theses

Exercise has been shown to induce significant stress and a subsequent inflammatory response characterized by changes in circulating leukocyte populations and inflammatory cytokines and has been well documented following aerobic exercise. Research in regards to the effects of resistance exercise on the stress induced inflammatory response is less prevalent and has shown divergent results, likely due to differences in the exercise protocols used, the time points measured and the subjects involved. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to analyze the stress response to an acute heavy resistance exercise protocol (AHREP) in resistance-trained men. Specifically, we examined effects on circulating …

Biocompatible Fluorescent Hydrogel Fiber For Glucose Monitoring, Srilaya Mopidevi May 2014

Biocompatible Fluorescent Hydrogel Fiber For Glucose Monitoring, Srilaya Mopidevi

Master's Theses

Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading incurable diseases which may lead to severe health complications due to elevated blood glucose levels. This is mainly caused due to lack of insulin secretion by pancreas (Type I) or when the cells in the body become resistant to insulin (Type II). The key for diabetes treatment is regular monitoring and maintenance of blood glucose levels in the body. We present herein an optical glucose biosensor for glucose monitoring, where a fluorescent enzymatic hydrogel is incorporated with fluorescein, polyethylene glycol and glucose oxidase. Glucose oxidase catalyzes oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid that …

Typhoons And Temperature Impact Crime Rates: Evidence From The Philippines, Emily Wetherley May 2014

Typhoons And Temperature Impact Crime Rates: Evidence From The Philippines, Emily Wetherley

Master's Theses

This study assesses the impact of typhoons and temperature on interpersonal, property, and non-index crime rates using a novel data set from the Philippines. Distributed lag OLS regression analysis shows that in the concurrent year of increased precipitation, theft rates decrease, but in the year following high average wind-speeds, theft rates increase again. The only significant result of impacts crimes against persons is the rate of physical injury which decreases in years of higher precipitation. These results are defended by interview and focus group information. This study also shows that higher average temperatures cause significantly higher rates of murder, index …

Experimental Investigations Of The Combination Of A Heat Pipe With Metal Foam Or Foils For Enhancing Heat Transfer During The Melting And Solidification Of A Phase Change Material (Pcm) For Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Applications, Michael J. Allen May 2014

Allen

Master's Theses

Various thermal energy storage (TES) systems including latent heat TES (LHTES), sensible heat TES and chemical TES are reviewed and analyzed with an emphasis on LHTES. LHTES is considered here due its high energy density which results in a significant reduction in the overall system size (volume and mass). However, LHTES systems have been limited in the past by the low thermal conductivity of most phase change materials (PCMs). A detailed experimental investigation is conducted to investigate the innovative combination of a heat pipe (HP) with either metal foam or foils. A cylindrical experimental apparatus is constructed to obtain the …

Inhibition Of Urinary Tract Infections And Biofilm Formation On Long-Term Indwelling Urethral Catheters Through Antibacterial Coatings, Jonathan L. Russo May 2014

Inhibition Of Urinary Tract Infections And Biofilm Formation On Long-Term Indwelling Urethral Catheters Through Antibacterial Coatings, Jonathan L. Russo

Master's Theses

Indwelling urethral catheters are both important and convenient biomedical devices for many people. They provide incontinent and/or paraplegic patients an involuntary method of emptying their bladder. The catheters are inserted through the patient’s urethra to the posterior portion of the bladder. A balloon is inflated with water to keep it secure and in place. The tip of the catheter has an eye hole exposing the lumen of the catheter. The urine in the bladder drains through the lumen and out of the body into a collection bag. Catheters can potentially have 2 problems. First, they are prone to calcium/magnesium phosphate …

Although there are numerous benefits to increased physical activity and proper dietary behaviors, the decreased participation in physical activity and poor dietary behaviors has emerged as a significant problem within the college student population. The focus of this research study was to identify the relationship between physical activity and dietary behavior to weight loss behaviors within an undergraduate student sample of a small, comprehensive northeastern university. College-aged students (age range: 17 to 27 years old) completed the American College Health Association’s (ACHA) National College Health Assessment II (NCHA) during the years 2009 and 2012. According to the results, there were …

Gender And Self-Representation In Maya Angelou's Autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings 2014, Jay-Nel Steitz May 2014

Gender And Self-Representation In Maya Angelou's Autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings 2014, Jay-Nel Steitz

Master's Theses

A voice that has been silenced for so long has much to say. Whether still confined or set free, the statement applies equally to both. The silenced voice wants not only to tell his or her story, but to share the life experiences which in turn reveal the identities of these individuals. These silenced voices then are not those of the oppressors, but the oppressed; and when an oppressor wants to share his or her story, the oppressed wants to tell their side of it as well. How can those labeled the marginalized outcasts of society express their feelings and …

The Effects Of Olfactory Stimuli On The Behavior Of The Far Eastern/Amur Leopard (Panthera Pardus Orientalis) In Captivity, Marks Stimson Mcwhorter May 2014

The Effects Of Olfactory Stimuli On The Behavior Of The Far Eastern/Amur Leopard (Panthera Pardus Orientalis) In Captivity, Marks Stimson Mcwhorter

Master's Theses

Two Amur leopards from the Jackson Zoological Park were observed under continuous surveillance while on exhibit over 21 days to better understand the activity budget of leopards in captivity, and what effects olfactory stimuli may have on those activity patterns. Behaviors were observed through surveillance systems located around their enclosure and scored using an ethogram, and proportions of behaviors shown were calculated for each day, and by 15-minute increments throughout the day. Over the course of this study, leopards received three olfactory stimuli on separate occasions, where we then compared behaviors before stimuli presented to behaviors expressed during and after …

Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Of Marine Clay Nano- And Microstructure By Transmission Electron Microscopy: Analysis Of Fabric And Pore Network, Jessica Rae Gardner Douglas May 2014

Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Of Marine Clay Nano- And Microstructure By Transmission Electron Microscopy: Analysis Of Fabric And Pore Network, Jessica Rae Gardner Douglas

Master's Theses

Three-dimensional reconstructions of marine fine-grained sediment open a new dimension for studying nano- and microscale organo-clay fabric important to improving and advancing organic matter (OM) sequestration and fluid flow dynamics modeling. I created 3-D reconstructions of clay fabric and pore pathways from serial sections and photographic mosaics obtained using transmission electron microscopy. These reconstructions show aggregations of clay domains, surrounding OM, and pore networks. I examined a Model sample (laboratory consolidated) with 1% OM and a Natural sample (polychaete fecal pellet) with high levels of OM. Three-dimensional reconstructions were segmented into 300 nm cube subsamples to make highly localized qualitative …

A Paleopathological Analysis Of The Moran French Colonial Cemetery, Jennifer Lynn Funkhouser May 2014

A Paleopathological Analysis Of The Moran French Colonial Cemetery, Jennifer Lynn Funkhouser

Master's Theses

This research examines the health experiences of early eighteenth-century European immigrants to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Most were low-status individuals forcibly expulsed from France and brought to Biloxi to colonize Louisiana. Historical records report the immigration effort was poorly provisioned and that large numbers died from malnutrition and disease soon after arrival. The remains of 30 adults, presumably colonists from this period based on collagen dating and grave goods, have been recovered at the Moran site (22HR511). DNA analysis (n = 8) suggests all are European. Most are males, and only one lived past age 40. Estimated mean height is …

Adaptive Method Of Approximate Particular Solution For One-Dimensional Differential Equations, Yichuan Dong May 2014

Adaptive Method Of Approximate Particular Solution For One-Dimensional Differential Equations, Yichuan Dong

Master's Theses

An adaptive algorithm for the Method Approximate Particular Solution (MAPS) using radial basis functions for solving boundary value problems is discussed in this work. The goal of the adaptive algorithm is to construct an optimal collocation points distribution that gives the required accuracy with the smallest number of degrees of freedom. I proposed the formulation of the adaptive MAPS for second order boundary value problems in an arbitrary dimensional setting. Then I applied this method to three different boundary value problems in one-dimensional setting. The performance of the adaptive method has been demonstrated by numerical experiments.

Seasonal Differences In Diet Of Two Predatory Fishes In Relation To Reef Type In The Inshore Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Brinton Thomas Barnes May 2014

Seasonal Differences In Diet Of Two Predatory Fishes In Relation To Reef Type In The Inshore Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Brinton Thomas Barnes

Master's Theses

Relationships of various structural features between reefs and their developing benthic and fish communities have an immense biological and ecological importance for reef restoration and rehabilitation. Therefore, objectives of this study were to establish how abundance (CPUE) and diet composition (%IRI) changes seasonally within Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, and Sand Seatrout, Cynoscion arenarius, to view which trophic levels are interacting in relation to different reef type (high relief profile vs. low profile relief). A Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA was performed on non-normal abundance data and determined no significant differences for reef type and season for both piscivorous species. Both …

Exploration Of Biophysical Interactions Associated With Mesoscale Variability In The Central Gulf Of Mexico, Katharine Celeste Woodard May 2014

Exploration Of Biophysical Interactions Associated With Mesoscale Variability In The Central Gulf Of Mexico, Katharine Celeste Woodard

Master's Theses

Bio-physical coupling in the Gulf of Mexico (GMx) is explored in this research using an integrated satellite sensor approach. Physical features are identified using Sea Level Anomaly (SLa) produced by Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO). Biological characteristics of the GMx have been recognized as ocean color identified by the satellites SeaWiFS and MODISA. A climatology data set and a chlorophyll anomaly (CLa) was made using the 14-year mean determined from the ocean color files. The hypotheses are that there will be an inverse relationship between SLa and CLa, that mesoscale SLa features will significantly modulate local …

Refocusing Ecocriticism: Going Deep With Walker Percy's The Moviegoer, Ivan Anderson Philippoff May 2014

Refocusing Ecocriticism: Going Deep With Walker Percy's The Moviegoer, Ivan Anderson Philippoff

Master's Theses

The field of scholarship known as ecocriticism is growing rapidly. Members of the field must endeavor to define ecocritism’s goals and parameters to prevent fragmentation and lack of focus. While most professed ecocritics agree that increased awareness and respect for the environment must be of paramount importance, some disagreement exists concerning the best methods to achieve this goal. One of the issues that requires clarification involves whether proponents of ecocriticism should adopt a more ecocentric or anthropocentric perspective of the environment. The former views humanity as part of a worldwide community and views nature as valuable in its own right. …

Propagation Of Oligomeric Α-Synuclein And Amyloid-Β: Implications For Parkinson's And Alzheimer's Diseases, Matthew Stephen Planchard May 2014

Propagation Of Oligomeric Α-Synuclein And Amyloid-Β: Implications For Parkinson's And Alzheimer's Diseases, Matthew Stephen Planchard

Master's Theses

The aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins is a critical event in the pathology of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). The proteins α-synuclein (αS) and amyloid-β (Aβ) are involved in the formation of amyloid lesions observed in PD and AD, respectively. Both PD and AD exhibit a significant amount of co-pathology in clinical settings, and the αS and Aβ proteins have been shown to interact in vitro. Recent experimental consensus has shown oligomeric species to be significant, if not primary, sources of toxicity in these diseases. …
