Orwell's Warnings : A Study Of George Orwell's Purpose In Writing, Ruth Anne Kurani Nuwayser

Master's Theses

Although George Orwell requested that no books be written about him, it is not difficult to glean a considerable amount of autobiographical material from his novels. His autobiographical works and several essays shed much light on his life and personality.

He was born in Motihari, Bengal, in 1903, of Scottish parents and christened Eric Blair. His father was a minor official in the Indian Civil Service and retired to England before his only son was eight years old.

At the age of eight, Orwell received a scholarship to study at a preparatory school, St. Cyprian's, on the south coast of …

The Effects Of Failure And Achievement Imagery On A Paired Associates Verbal Learning Task, Warren Daniels Bloodsworth

Master's Theses

Concern over the effects of failure on performance has led many researchers to experimental investigation of this problem. However, a review of the literature indicated that the exact effects of failure are still not known. The results of most studies have shown a decrement in performance or learning following failure hill others have found either no effect or an increment.

The Repression-Sensitization Dimension As Related To Deviant Responses On Content And Contentless Tasks, Arthur W. Lucky Apr 1962

The Repression-Sensitization Dimension As Related To Deviant Responses On Content And Contentless Tasks, Arthur W. Lucky

Master's Theses

During recent years much experimentation has been concerned with the phenomenon of perceptual defense. Most of the investigators have operationally defined "perceptual defense" as the raising of recognition thresholds tor anxiety-arousing stimuli over those for neutral stimuli. Some have claimed that perceptual defense is a personality variable that is present in some individuals and absent in others. Occasionally studies have investigated the effects or t.he type or stimulus material and tho type of defense mechanisms typical of the perceiver. It is generally agreed that "perceptual defenders (who will hereafter be called repressers) are those who characteristically utilize denial and repression …

Through A Glass Darkly : The Literary Reputation Of Henry James, Linda Goodman Lewis

Master's Theses

In the course of any artist's career there usually are changes in the attitudes towards him. If he is developing, the changes should be a fact, especially if the times are changing also. If the artist does not show any differences during his career, there is little point in his creating the first product.

Construction And Validation Of A Forced-Choice Scale For Rating Clinical Performance Of Physical Therapy Students, Margot Trimble

Master's Theses

One of the major objectives of education in the profession of physical therapy is to prepare the student to adequately perform in a clinical setting. A part of the education of each physical therapy student is devoted to full-time clinical experience under the supervision of qualified therapists. These therapists, designated as clinical supervisors or clinical instructors, are faced with the problem of evaluation of each student's performance during the period of clinical education. The problem of providing valid evaluation of clinical performance by a student is one common to many professions. It is not unlike the problem faced by many …

Additional interest lies in the secondary measures of weight loss during deprivation, water intake during the consumption period, and weight gained during the consumption period.

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin Apr 1961

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin

Master's Theses

Since Flaubert has been called "le chef de l'ecole realiste", an attempt will be made in this thesis to show how he used realism in the treatment of heroines in his novels. The first chapter will be dedicated to realism itself, showing first how the movement began in France in the mid-nineteenth century before Flaubert and Balzac were considered realists, followed by a modern definition and characteristics, such as: truth, materialism, scientific approach, documentary method, tediousness, mediocrity, sympathy with ordinary life and sociological features.

The other four chapters will be dedicated to Flaubert' s main heroines. Each chapter will have …
