A Study Of A Divalent Cation-Selective Electrode, William Stanhope Ryan Jr.
A Study Of A Divalent Cation-Selective Electrode, William Stanhope Ryan Jr.
Master's Theses
The ion-selective membrane electrode, recently introduced commercially, has shown excellent promise as a tool for determining ionic activities and concentrations in solution. It was the intent of the author to study the Orion divalent cation-selective electrode with two objectives.
The first objective of this research was to characterize the response of the divalent cation-selective electrode to calcium and magnesium ions in aqueous solutions. The effect of anions, monovalent cations; and pH upon this response was investigated. An examination was made of the response of this electrode to other divalent cations and of the effect of organic solvents on the membrane …
Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett
Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett
Master's Theses
The experiments reported here with zinc selenide have a two-fold purpose. First, by using basically the same experimental set-up as Conway did, we are attempting to duplicate this LIMA using zinc selenide instead of cadium sulfide. Unlike his set-up, primarily one laser chopping frequency was used. Also, only one laser wavelength, 632.8 nanometers, was available, where Conway used lasers of wave lengths 647.1 nanometers and 530.8 nanometers. Another main difference is that in earlier works by Conway, laser pulse duration was of the order of 40 milliseconds, whereas the present duration is approximately 2.5 milliseconds. It was observed that the …
A Study Of The Acetic Anhydride Method For The Determination Of Citric Acid, Russell Kent Odland
A Study Of The Acetic Anhydride Method For The Determination Of Citric Acid, Russell Kent Odland
Master's Theses
Citric acid is an important compound of many systems. Numerous methods, both qualitative and quantitative, have been used for the determination of the compound. Some of the biological systems investigated include fermentation studies, action on yeasts, antioxidant in fruits, additive in bakery goods and salad dressing preparations, amounts in vegetables, and others. The above examples are not complete; they only show the varied applications of citric acid. The purpose of this project was to investigate a quantitative spectrophotometric method using anhydrous conditions based on the citric acid-acetic anhydride-pyridine reaction. Conditions affecting the reaction were investigated and optimized for maximum sensitivity and …
The Selection Of Bank Management Trainees: A Validation Study, James G. Overton
The Selection Of Bank Management Trainees: A Validation Study, James G. Overton
Master's Theses
Twelve studies of psychometric prediction using cognitive ability tests with upper level managerial samples are summarized. Of these, only two yield essentially positive results. Meyer (1956) found·a correlation of .27 between Wonderlic scores and overall ratings of 142 supervisors. However, since the raters were free to examine predictor-scores while making their ratings, there is strong evidence that the criterion was contaminated. In an unpublished study, Laurent (1962) correlated ratings of managers with Miller Analogies Test and non-verbal abiliti test scores. With over 200 persons in each sample, he found correlations ranging from .18 to .29, all significant. The majority of …

A Comparative Investigation Of The Relationship Between Algebra Grades And Differential Aptitude Test Subtests To Geometry Grades, Barbara Jean Southall
A Comparative Investigation Of The Relationship Between Algebra Grades And Differential Aptitude Test Subtests To Geometry Grades, Barbara Jean Southall
Master's Theses
THE PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVES
Counselors and teachers have long wanted a system to predict a student's probable level of achievement in the next higher course. This has been especially true in the academic areas such as English and mathematics. To do so involves many factors and the attempt has not yet proven successful.
THE PROBLEM
After three years of teaching both Algebra II and Trigonometry, and Fused Geometry, the author has become aware of the need for predicting a student's probable level of achievement in the next higher mathematics course. This is particularly true when colleges may be more selective …
Substituted ℓ-Dialkylaminomethyl-3-Phenyl-1-Naphthalenemethanols, Richard Elroy Davis
Substituted ℓ-Dialkylaminomethyl-3-Phenyl-1-Naphthalenemethanols, Richard Elroy Davis
Master's Theses
Malaria is still a world health problem. Established antimalarial drugs have become ineffective in many areas because of the emergence of resistant strains of malaria. New efforts have been initiated to study variations of new untried compounds and earlier structures shown to have activity. The 4-quinolinemethanols fall into the latter class. The great activity of the 4-quinolinemethanols is offset by their phytotoxic activity.
The possibility that substituted o(-dialkylaminomethyl-3-phenyl-1- naphthalenemethanols, as analogs of the 4-quinolinemethanols, would be effective antimalarials, yet not have the phototoxic side effect, is discussed in this paper. Synthetic pathways to the naphthalenemhethanols are discussed. Experimental procedures are …

Characteristics Of Successful Teaches Of The Disadvantaged (As Identified By School Principals), Lubomyr Zapar
Master's Theses
It was the problem of this study to identify basic characteristics, which teachers of the disadvantaged should possess in order to achieve maximum effectiveness in their teaching. Also, the study attempted to discover and reveal factual data on the disparity, which exists between the characteristics, which teachers presently working in this capacity possess, and those characteristics which are preferred.
Reverend William Graham, Presbyterian Minister And Rector Of Liberty Hall Academy, Robert Goggin Gillespie
Reverend William Graham, Presbyterian Minister And Rector Of Liberty Hall Academy, Robert Goggin Gillespie
Master's Theses
During the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the Reverend William Graham, a Presbyterian Minister, became noted as an educator and minister in Virginia. His dedicated teaching and deep concern for education insured the creation and preservation of Liberty Hall Academy during and after the Revolution; and his devout ministry resulted in revivals which strengthened Presbyterianism in Virginia.
In addition to teaching and preaching, William Graham was a lso interested in the political affairs of the time. He was vitally concerned with the establishment of representative democracy. He felt that through the constitutions and laws which were then being adopted …
Attitudes And Beliefs Of Chesterfield County Students Concerning All Police Officials, Benjamin Franklin Lewis
Attitudes And Beliefs Of Chesterfield County Students Concerning All Police Officials, Benjamin Franklin Lewis
Master's Theses
The problem of this investigation was:
1. What was the attitude of school-age children towards the police and their law enforcement duties?
2. How did these children react towards the police as individuals and to the image they projected?
3. Did the investigator find any change in the attitudes and beliefs of the students as he progressed from one grade or age level to another one and , if so, was the change or difference significant?
4. Was there a difference in the responses of boys as compared to those of girls and , if so, was the difference significant?

Sequential Processing Deficits In Reading Retardation, Sara Gambrell Tarver
Sequential Processing Deficits In Reading Retardation, Sara Gambrell Tarver
Master's Theses
Doehring (1968) hypothesized that a basic sequential processing deficit underlies specific reading disability. To investigate sequential processing deficits in reading retardation, four tasks involving the reproduction of stimuli in a particular sequence were administered to a group of retarded readers and a group of normal readers matched on age, sex, race, educational opportunity, sociocultural environment, and Non-Language IQ on the CTMM. The normal readers were significantly superior to the retarded readers on the four sequential processing tasks and on two other tests, vocabulary and rhyming. The two groups did not differ significantly on reversals discrimination, perceptual speed, or cumulative learning. …

Extensions Of Morley's Theorem, Richard Harvey Gordon
Extensions Of Morley's Theorem, Richard Harvey Gordon
Master's Theses
A review of the literature since 1899 when Morley offered his original hypothesis. Various authors have given proofs of the theorem, shown the existence of 27 such triangles, and established relationships to other mathematical concepts: isogonal conjugates, Lemoine point, Hessian points and axis, circles of Apollonius, Brianchon hexagons. The author explores the various intersections of the n-sectors of the angles of a general triangle, showing, incidentally, the uniqueness of the Morley equilateral triangle. Turning to the quadrilateral, the intersections of the tri-sectors of: the angles of a parallelogram, rectangle, trapezoid, and kite-shaped quadrilateral are examined, as well as those of …
