The Relationship Of The Self-Esteem Variable To Specific Christian Doctrines, Paul A. Fisher
The Relationship Of The Self-Esteem Variable To Specific Christian Doctrines, Paul A. Fisher
Master's Theses
Problem The self-esteem variable is often used as an evaluative criterion in the assessment of the functionality of particular Christian doctrines. High self-esteem is assumed to be the optimal level of selffunctioning, and specific doctrines are evaluated according to this standard. Purpose It was the purpose of this study to examine the relationship between specific Christian doctrines and the self-esteem variable. Method The self-esteem variable was defined from selected psychological and theological literature. The literature was selected on the basis of two main criteria; a phenomenological approach and an identification of the self-esteem variable in terms of self-love, self-acceptance, and …

Undoing Ideologies In Diachronic Studies Of English : Towards More Realistic Pictures Of Language Changes From Late Oe To Me, Seiki Ayano
Master's Theses
For over a century, the development of English, especially its two waves of foreign influence during the period between late OE to ME, has been a controversial area. This paper attempts to examine the two instances of foreign influence exerted upon English using several important notions taken from pidgin-creole and bilingual theories to provide more realistic pictures of the two language contact situations. The paper does not provide a clear-cut conclusion, but rather it undoes age-old binary models, e.g., pro-Germanic vs. pro-Romance, introduces new insights, and raises questions regarding sociolinguistic aspects of language contact and the transformation of English during …

Inerrancy And Sovereignty: A Case Study On Carl F. H. Henry, Joseph Karanja
Inerrancy And Sovereignty: A Case Study On Carl F. H. Henry, Joseph Karanja
Master's Theses
Problem This study examines how the concept of inerrancy of Scripture presupposes a particular understanding of divine sovereignty. Investigation is based on the writings of Carl F. H. Henry, a contemporary American evangelical theologian. Method This investigation uses case—study approach. It consists of a descriptive analysis of Carl Henry's concepts of inerrancy and sovereignty as individual concepts and the sense in which the former presupposes the latter. General inferences are based on that analysis. Results This study shows that Henry's concept of sovereignty is an indispensable presupposition in his concept of inerrancy. Among other things, sovereignty denotes Gad's absolute causality, …

Nature As A Biblical Hermeneutic Device: The Role And Use Of Light In The Experience And Writings Of Ellen G. White, William Clyde Sands
Nature As A Biblical Hermeneutic Device: The Role And Use Of Light In The Experience And Writings Of Ellen G. White, William Clyde Sands
Master's Theses
Problem In Seventh-day Adventism Ellen G. White is a key figure. Debate exists over whether she did serious biblical exegesis, engaged in proof-text eisegesis, or did only thematic homiletics. Method Selections of White's writings were approached using Dr. Douglas Waterhouse's biblical hermeneutic in which ritual, nature, and cosmos are three levels of meaning revealed in sound biblical exegesis. From the various aspects of nature, light was selected. Life Sketches and Earlv Writings were the source of autobiographical data. The parable of the Ten Virgins as interpreted in Christ's Object Lessons was the case study. Results White does homiletics which are …

United States Military Special Operations Forces: Why They Are Our Best Military Assets For Low-Intensity Conflicts, Stephen Leslie Robinson
Master's Theses
This thesis addresses the development of United States military assets for dealing with revolutionary warfare, terrorism, and other threats which could be identified under the rubric, "low-· intensity conflict." Elite military units, collectively identified as Special Operations Forces (SOF), are examined for the character- !sties and attributes which promote misunderstanding and mistrust about their capabilities. Some analytical distinctions are developed which may be useful in defining roles and missions for SOF elements. Cultural impediments which may inhibit SOF activities are considered as well. Research efforts included interviews and discussion with twenty Special Operations soldiers, both active and retired, a number …

Factors Affecting The Political Stability Of Certain Latin American Countries, Sue Fulghum
Factors Affecting The Political Stability Of Certain Latin American Countries, Sue Fulghum
Master's Theses
The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis that the factors that have produced political stability in Mexico have been largely absent from the political development experience of other Latin American countries that have experi~nced instability. Based on the literature on political development theory and on an historical survey of political development in Mexico, the factors of consensus, legitimacy and institutionalization are identified as having been primarily responsible for political stability. These factors have allowed the Mexican political system to respond successfully to the destabilizing pressures of modernization, economic development, social mobilization and urbanization, as well as the …
