Increasing Novel Vocalizations For Individuals With Asd Using A Voice Output Communication Aide, Shawn Kathleen Bishop May 2017

Increasing Novel Vocalizations For Individuals With Asd Using A Voice Output Communication Aide, Shawn Kathleen Bishop

Master's Theses

This study aimed to extend the literature on VOCA as a means of producing increased verbal speech using a prompt delay and shaping methods. Intervention targeted novel vocalization for three children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and limited vocal speech. All three participants increased vocalizations, but to varying degrees and only after a second phase where an echoic prompt was introduced. While the results vary across participants, increased vocal speech for all participants and high social validity suggest that VOCA-based interventions may be an appropriate intervention to increase vocal output for children with ASD.

No Foreign Despots On Southern Soil: The American Party In Alabama And South Carolina, 1850-1857, Robert N. Farrell May 2017

No Foreign Despots On Southern Soil: The American Party In Alabama And South Carolina, 1850-1857, Robert N. Farrell

Master's Theses

During the 1850s in the South, the American Party, also known as the Know Nothing Party, rallied southerners culturally and politically around nativism, an anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic ideology. This thesis studies nativism in the Deep South and challenges existing scholarship by Tyler Anbinder and William Darrell Overdyke. Anbinder claims that southern Know Nothings held little in common with their northern counterparts and exhibited only regional characteristics. Overdyke maintains that the American Party in the Deep South participated in the national organization, but he argues that nativism appeared only as an incidental component.

An analysis of private papers, speeches, and newspapers …

Investigating The Cross-Domain Plasticity Of Musical Training And Reading Acquisition: A Developmental Perspective, Parker R. Tichko Apr 2017

Investigating The Cross-Domain Plasticity Of Musical Training And Reading Acquisition: A Developmental Perspective, Parker R. Tichko

Master's Theses

For a child learning spoken language, reading development is a complex cognitive process that relies on robust sensorineural processing of the speech signal to acquire phonological knowledge. Consequently, several authors have proposed that music training might enhance the sensorineural processing of speech, ultimately bolstering reading-related skills in children (Patel, 2011, 2014; Tallal & Gaab, 2006; Tierney & Kraus, 2013). Indeed, neural indices of auditory processing are related to reading ability in childhood, including typical & atypical readers, and, interestingly, in children with a history of music training (Tierney & Kraus, 2013). Collectively, these findings suggest that music training might facilitate …

The Study Of The Development Of Negation In Bilingual Spanish/English And Monolingual English Speakers, Isabel Cristina Verduzco Jan 2017

The Study Of The Development Of Negation In Bilingual Spanish/English And Monolingual English Speakers, Isabel Cristina Verduzco

Master's Theses

Problem

Negation is one of the first concepts learned early during childhood and one of the most important ones for communication. Current studies focus on how negation is developed universally in each specific language and how it is governed by patterns of acquisition, however, there are factors that may affect this process. How does learning two languages simultaneously affect the normal development of negation? Analyzing how the exposure to two different languages affects the normal development of negation is important for understanding how bilingualism influences normal language development. This study is also important for the analysis of speech and language …

Theory Of Mind And Negation, Jasmine Buckins Jan 2017

Theory Of Mind And Negation, Jasmine Buckins

Master's Theses

Problem

There is an extensive amount of research on theory of mind, which is the ability to attribute mental states (e.g., beliefs, intents, desires, knowledge, etc.) to oneself and others and to comprehend that others have beliefs, desires, intentions and perspectives that may be different from one’s own. Some researchers have investigated the potential prerequisites or developmental milestones that may be required in order for a theory of mind to be developed in young children. Some researchers have concluded that certain factors play a role in theory of mind development. These factors include environmental, cognitive and linguistic components. However, in …

Understanding The Level Of Achievement Bilingual Education Fosters In Students, Erica Mallett Jan 2017

Understanding The Level Of Achievement Bilingual Education Fosters In Students, Erica Mallett

Master's Theses

Traditional approaches to examining the effectiveness of bilingual programs typically compare them to monolingual programs and rarely discuss the meaning and complexity of the notion of achievement therein. A vertical case study framework is used to examine this local phenomenon at a bilingual elementary school in Chicago, Illinois across local, national, and global contexts. This vertical case study aims to answer the question; how does a bilingual program define the notion of achievement and work to facilitate that achievement for students? To do this, I conducted interviews and analyzed policy documents to examine how achievement is defined in bilingual education …

Aldo Rossi: The City As The Locus Of Collective Memory And The Making Of The Public City In Cold War Italy, Sonia Melani Miller Jan 2017

Aldo Rossi: The City As The Locus Of Collective Memory And The Making Of The Public City In Cold War Italy, Sonia Melani Miller

Master's Theses

This paper seeks to redefine the scholarship on Aldo Rossi (1931-1997), an Italian architect known for having reintroduced symbolism to European architecture after the 1960s. My thesis addresses questions surrounding the development of Rossi’s theory of city morphology, proposing that it was rooted in antifascist sentiments and influenced by politics of the Cold War. Rossi’s professional growth is outlined through a period conditioned by the reactionary ideologies of postwar Europe, which deeply influenced the nation’s culture and shaped artistic production. This thesis relies on unpublished archival material from Rossi’s early career that documents the leading political and philosophical ideas of …

Quantifying The Functional Consequences Of Spanish [S] Lenition: Plural Marking And Derived Homophony In Western Andalusian And Castilian, Mary Catherine Moran Ryan Jan 2017

Quantifying The Functional Consequences Of Spanish [S] Lenition: Plural Marking And Derived Homophony In Western Andalusian And Castilian, Mary Catherine Moran Ryan

Master's Theses

In this thesis, a new methodology is proposed for investigating Spanish [s] lenition (sound weakening or loss) via morphological analysis instead of phonetics. Word-final [s] is a morphological plural marker in Castilian Spanish, but is rarely produced in Western Andalusian Spanish (WAS). It is often asserted in the literature that the loss of [s] in WAS requires plurality to be expressed via alternative means. The results of this study rule out lexical and morpho-syntactic compensation for [s] lenition in WAS in several previously untested domains, and imply that there is no functional motivation in Modern Spanish driving a need for …

The Eurasian Agenda: The International Relations Of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Baiyzbekov Dec 2016

The Eurasian Agenda: The International Relations Of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Baiyzbekov

Master's Theses

The disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the newly independent states in Central Asia are among the most important historical events of the 20th century. As one of these newly independent and sovereign state, Kyrgyzstan found itself in the sphere of the geopolitical rivalry among the Great Powers, such as the U.S., Russia, and China. Even though a relatively small and militarily weak state, Kyrgyzstan came to play an important role in their Eurasian agenda. In this thesis, I examine in detail the international relations of Kyrgyzstan with all its neighboring states, but focus extensively on …

Sino Ako? (Who Am I?): Exploring Filipino American Identity In Philippine Studies Courses, Omega Loren Letana Dec 2016

Sino Ako? (Who Am I?): Exploring Filipino American Identity In Philippine Studies Courses, Omega Loren Letana

Master's Theses

Filipinos make up the third largest immigrant population in the United States and are the largest Asian immigrant group in California (U.S. Census, 2010). Despite this and an American colonial past, the American education system has failed to depict Filipino and Filipino American history accurately in its textbooks and courses. In addition to this, studies have indicated that young Filipino Americans often have difficulties in defining their identities. It is imperative that we recognize how this issue of identity formation is being addressed in postsecondary institutions through Philippine Studies courses, which employ decolonizing pedagogies.

This thesis paper analyzes the role …

Challenging Filipino Colonial Mentality With Philippine Art, Francesca V. Mateo Dec 2016

Challenging Filipino Colonial Mentality With Philippine Art, Francesca V. Mateo

Master's Theses

For 350 years, the Philippines was colonized by Spain and the United States. The Philippines became a sovereign nation in 1946 yet, fifty years later, colonial teachings continue to oppress Filipinos due to their colonial mentality (CM.) CM is an internalized oppression among Filipinos in which they experience an automatic preference for anything Western—European or U.S. American—and rejection of anything Filipino. Although Filipinos show signs of a CM, there are Filipinos who are challenging CM by engaging in Philippine art. Philippine art is defined as Filipino-made visual art, literature, music, and dance intended to promote Philippine culture. This …

Notions Of Discontent And Distinction: Reflections Of Young Diasporic Taiwanese Americans, Andrew T. Chen Dec 2016

Notions Of Discontent And Distinction: Reflections Of Young Diasporic Taiwanese Americans, Andrew T. Chen

Master's Theses

In 1971, Taiwan lost its seat in the United Nations and has been vying for international validation ever since. The Kuomintang’s (KMT) loss and the development of Taiwan’s democracy has left millions with varying opinions pertaining to the status of Taiwan. It also brings up the importance of what it means to be Taiwanese and how Taiwanese people identify and distinguish themselves from China. For much of the Republic of China’s (ROC) existence in Taiwan the independence movement for the de facto nation-state has lived outside of its borders, making achievements and enduring hardships for Taiwan and Taiwanese Americans throughout …

Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Fardowsa Abdullahi Dec 2016

Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Fardowsa Abdullahi

Master's Theses

In the Darfur conflict the Sudanese government forces and the Janjaweed have used rape as a weapon of war, in the ethnic cleansing of non-Arab tribes in the region. Rape as a weapon of war was also used to degrade, terrorize women and destroy families and communities. In Darfur women and girls were raped in front of their family members. Victims ranging as young as eight years were raped in Darfur. This research investigates rape as a weapon of war. I took a qualitative approach by examining how rape was used as a weapon of war in Darfur and by …

Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li Dec 2016

Subphonemic Sensitivity In Low Literacy Adults, Monica Y.C. Li

Master's Theses

The link between phonological abilities and reading skills has been well-established in both typical and atypical language development. However, the nature of the phonological deficits in poor readers remains a debated topic. While poor readers have been mostly assumed to have underspecified or “fuzzy” phonological representations (Tallal et al., 1998), the opposite alternative, over-specified phonological representations, has also been hypothesized (Serniclaes, 2006). To examine the two phonological hypotheses, the current study used the eye-tracking paradigm in the study of Dahan et al. (2001) to investigate individuals’ sensitivity to subphonemic information in young adults with a wide range of reading abilities. …

This thesis involves dance integration and examines creating and presenting a movement and dance-integrated curriculum that teaches concepts that are part of the math discipline. The study explores how the movement and a dance-integrated curriculum affects student behavior and learning, …

The Perceived Validity Of Stereotype Threat As An Explanation For Underperformance, Gabriel Camacho Nov 2016

The Perceived Validity Of Stereotype Threat As An Explanation For Underperformance, Gabriel Camacho

Master's Theses

Research demonstrates that members of stigmatized groups may underperform when stereotype threat is induced. No research, however, has examined whether attributing underperformance to stereotype threat is perceived as a likely or valid explanation. In two experiments White students were randomly assigned to review the test performance of a fellow student described as a racial/ethnic minority (stigmatized group) or White (non-stigmatized group). Experiment 1 revealed that Hispanic and Black students were significantly more likely to have their underperformance attributed to dispositional and stereotypic causes than a White student. Experiment 2 revealed that White students perceived attributing underperformance to stereotype threat as …

The Role Of Diversity Of Academic Major In Influencing Group And Individual Creativity, Xiaochen Liu Nov 2016

The Role Of Diversity Of Academic Major In Influencing Group And Individual Creativity, Xiaochen Liu

Master's Theses

This study examined, on a preliminary basis, the role of diversity of academic major in influencing individual and group divergent thinking. Prior studies on diversity provide evidence that working with diverse individuals can make groups more productive in generating creative ideas. Diversity of academic major is an important element of group diversity that has not been sufficiently studied. This study provided direction for future research to help us understand the ways that diversity may influence creative thinking as well as enrich the school curriculum. A total of 56 graduate students from University of Connecticut were recruited to study this issue. …

Experiments With And Implementation Of A Context Sensitive Text Summarizer, Charles Joseph Bocage Oct 2016

Experiments With And Implementation Of A Context Sensitive Text Summarizer, Charles Joseph Bocage

Master's Theses

Automatic text summarization is the ability to obtain key ideas from a text passage using as few words as possible. With the increase in data on the web, manual summarization of web pages has become unfeasible, and the need for automatic text summarization has become ever greater. This project explored and implemented various parts of the automatic text summarization process for an open source search engine, Yioop. These parts included stemming, text segmentation, term frequency weighting, automatic sentence compression, and content management system detection.

In addition, experiments were conducted on different pre-existing Yioop summarizers. These results served as a baseline …

The Shojo Within The Work Of Aida Makoto: Japanese Identity Since The 1980s, Laurel Rose Hartman Oct 2016

The Shojo Within The Work Of Aida Makoto: Japanese Identity Since The 1980s, Laurel Rose Hartman

Master's Theses

The work of Japanese contemporary artist Aida Makoto (1965-) has been shown internationally in major art institutions, yet there is little English-language art historical scholarship on him. While a contemporary of internationally-acclaimed Japanese artists Murakami Takashi and Nara Yoshitomo, Aida has neither gained their level of international recognition or respect. To date, Aida’s work has been consistently labeled as otaku or subcultural art, and this label fosters exotic and juvenile notions about the artist’s heavy engagement with Japanese animation, film and manga (Japanese comic book) culture. In addition to this critical devaluation, Aida’s explicit and deliberately shocking compositions seemingly serve …

Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan Oct 2016

Psychopathology And Creativity Among Creative And Non-Creative Professions, Victor Kwan

Master's Theses

The mad genius debate has been a topic that has been discussed in both popular culture and academic discourse. The current study sought to replicate previous findings that linked psychopathology to creativity. A total of 165 biographies of eminent professionals (artists, scientists, athletes) were rated on 19 mental disorders using a three point scale of not present (0), probable (1), and present (2) for potential symptoms. Athletes served as an eminent but not creative comparison group in order to discern whether fame, independent of creativity, was associated with psychopathology. Comparison of proportion analyses were conducted to identify differences of proportion …

Gender In 17th Century Southern New England, Megan K. Willison Aug 2016

Gender In 17th Century Southern New England, Megan K. Willison

Master's Theses

This thesis, written in the form of two broadly related articles, aims to address questions related to topics of gender, identity, cultural change and continuity, and the materiality of social institutions. Each article investigates how artifacts, as physical objects unintentionally or purposefully discarded, represent and reflect human behavior, societal ideologies, and cultural infrastructures. Using primary sources, archaeological evidence, and linguistic data, each article proposes that certain artifact classes are representative of larger societal ideals and cultural mores, such as gender systems and ways of defining one's gender identity. The first article studies these topics through the analysis of funerary remains …

Individual Differences In Sensitivity To Morphological Structure In Words And Nonwords, Oliver M. Sawi Aug 2016

Individual Differences In Sensitivity To Morphological Structure In Words And Nonwords, Oliver M. Sawi

Master's Theses

Understanding visual word recognition has been a central goal of psycholinguistics from its early beginnings. Examination of the statistical properties of language has uncovered many aspects of words that facilitate recognition. In addition, evidence from both behavior and computational modeling suggests that individual differences in experience and the strength of connections in an individual’s reading network affect the sensitivity to these statistical properties in language. Morphology has special properties in this sense as morphologically related items have statistical regularities across both form and meaning. The current study examined whether individual differences in skill modulate sensitivity to morphological structure. Specifically, we …

Use Of Turkish Verbal Morphology By Children With Primary Language Impairment And Their Typically Developing Peers, Treysi Terziyan Aug 2016

Use Of Turkish Verbal Morphology By Children With Primary Language Impairment And Their Typically Developing Peers, Treysi Terziyan

Master's Theses

Language impairment in languages other than English has not been exhaustively studied. In the current study, we developed tasks that elicit productions of verbal morphemes from Turkish-speaking children. In the first part of the study we developed the tasks and piloted them on adults and school-aged children. In the second part of the study, we compared the performance of younger children with and without primary language impairment on the tasks we had developed. Our results suggested that adults and school-aged children were at or near ceiling on our tasks. Furthermore, the younger typically developing children performed near ceiling, whereas the …

Additional research used for this study includes studies on what has been determined to benefit emerging multilingual students, as well as studies about the role of globalization and politics in the education of emerging multilingual and other culturally and linguistically diverse students. The study seeks to further the research on what changes in practice and mindset need to take place in the system …

Location Inference Of Social Media Posts At Hyper-Local Scale, Brian D. Mcclanahan Jul 2016

Location Inference Of Social Media Posts At Hyper-Local Scale, Brian D. Mcclanahan

Master's Theses

This paper describes an approach to infer the location of a social media post at a hyper-local scale based on its content, conditional to the knowledge that the post originates from a larger area such as a city or even a state. The approach comprises three components: (i) a discriminative classifier, namely, Logistic Regression (LR) which selects from a set of most probable sub-regions from where 1 a post might have originated; (ii) a clustering technique, namely, k-means, that adaptively partitions the larger geographic region into sub-regions based on the density of the posts; and (iii) a range of techniques …

Skewer: Sentiment Knowledge Extraction With Entity Recognition, Christopher James Wu Jun 2016

Skewer: Sentiment Knowledge Extraction With Entity Recognition, Christopher James Wu

Master's Theses

The California state legislature introduces approximately 5,000 new bills each legislative session. While the legislative hearings are recorded on video, the recordings are not easily accessible to the public. The lack of official transcripts or summaries also increases the effort required to gain meaningful insight from those recordings. Therefore, the news media and the general population are largely oblivious to what transpires during legislative sessions.

Digital Democracy, a project started by the Cal Poly Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy, is an online platform created to bring transparency to the California legislature. It features a searchable database of state …
