An Evaluative Study Of The Student-Activity Program In Group Ii High Schools In Virginia, Emelyn Mills Markwith

Master's Theses

Sattler Burns Anderson made a study of the Junior High School intramural sports program in the Richmond public schools. One of the purposes of the study, which was based on a questionnaire, was to get the student’s reactions to an intramural program. A large percentage of students participated in intramural sports (90.8 percent) and five main reasons were given by them for their participation: (1) to have fun, (2) to maintain better health through exercising in sports, (3) to improve athletic skills, (4) to maintain friendly relations with classmates, and (5) to compete against others. The main reasons for non-participation …

A History Of The Richmond, Virginia, Fire Department, Donald Lee Morecock Aug 1958

A History Of The Richmond, Virginia, Fire Department, Donald Lee Morecock

Master's Theses

Firefighting has become a potentially dangerous profession one and one which has become more and more scientific as the years have passed. In early, days, when more of the human element was involved in those organizations devoted to fire protection, the fire house was a gathering place for town politicians, retired workers, and for those who, while not firemen themselves, were continually fascinated by the deeds of daring performed by those who manned the hose. In this paper, the author has attempted to give a picture of fire fighting in Richmond from the very earliest tiems up to the Fire …

A Study Of The State Teachers' Scholarship Program In Virginia, Nora Jones Culpeper

Master's Theses

A State Teachers Scholarship Program was inaugurated in Virginia in 1947. The program, based on appropriations made by the General Assembly of Virginia for each biennium, has been in continuous operation for eleven years. It provides financial assistance in the form of scholarship grants for in-service teachers and for individuals who are preparing to enter the teaching profession.

The State Teachers' Scholarship Program, designed to foster the cause of education in Virginia, should be appraised in terms or its effectiveness. It is a recognized fact that any service which has been in operation for a period of time should be evaluated …

The Educational Program Of The Civilian Conservation Corps, James Ensign Britton Apr 1958

The Educational Program Of The Civilian Conservation Corps, James Ensign Britton

Master's Theses

Federal participation in American public school education began with the public school land grants of 1785. The succeeding years saw many extensions of federal aid to education, e.g., research conferences with state and local edu- cation officials with the purpose of bringing to their attention the problems of youth and to plan attacks on these problems, and publishing and distributing reports of educational accomplishments of states and localities. But, throughout this period, extending until 1933, the central government's relation to education was clear. Public education was regarded as a state prerogative. What broad controls the Federal Government exercised over certain …

An Analysis Of Instalment Credit Within Commercial Banks, Wayne Atwell Freeland Apr 1958

An Analysis Of Instalment Credit Within Commercial Banks, Wayne Atwell Freeland

Master's Theses

Within the past two decades, the rapid expansion of consumer installment credit activity by commercial banking has been a noteworthy development. Commercial bankers have made an about face in a brief period of financial history. As recently as the early 1930's the attitude of commercial bankers toward installment credit was one of hesitance and reluctance. Since that period commercial banks have expanded to become the largest single holder of installment credit.

The primary purpose of this thesis is to review and evaluate the principles, methods and procedures used in the investigation and credit decision of consumer instalment credit as established …

Density Measurements Of Urea Adducts, Pascal Angelo Tarantino Jan 1958

Density Measurements Of Urea Adducts, Pascal Angelo Tarantino

Master's Theses

The principal objective of this thesis is to investigate the densities of four different homologous series of urea adducts to discover the effect functional groups have on the density and molar ratio of the adducts. The four series selected are straight chain saturated hydrocarbons of the following types: n-paraffins, alcohols, acids and bromides. The number of carbon atoms contained in the chains are 8, 10, 14 and 18 for each of the respective series.

Since the discovery of urea complexes in 1939 by Frederick M. Bengen, an exceedingly high interest has been awakened in many chemical laboratories all over the …
