The work in this thesis is a continuation of a project started at the University of Richmond in 1952 by A. G. Richardson under the directorship of Dr. J. S. Pierce and Dr. George z.Williams, Director of Clinical Pathology, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.

The purpose of the research was to prepare triphenyl tetrazolium salts, substituted, particularly in the ortho and para positions, with various electron accepting and electron donating groups. As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

Until the latter part of the nineteenth century,the medical profession suffered from a basic lack of knowledge concerning disease and infection. The Civil War, during which thousands or men died of infection following wounds and operations was a monument to that lack of knowledge. Wounded and injured soldiers were doomed to a ,slow death .from gangrene caused by unclean operating methods and poor hospital sanitation. The number of lives that might have been saved by better techniques will never be known,but a fairly safe assumption would be that at least eighty percent of the wounded who actually came.under a.doctor's care …

Pelomyxa palustris Greeff, the largest rhizopod of which we have knowledge, was described in 1870 by Greeff who named the organism Pelobius. According to Penard (1902) it was redescribed by Archer in 1871 and reviewed. by Greeff (1874) who then gave it the name P. palustris.
