Indirect Impact Of Soil Microbial Communities On Plant-Aphid Interactions, Zachary Tiemann May 2021

Indirect Impact Of Soil Microbial Communities On Plant-Aphid Interactions, Zachary Tiemann

Master's Theses

The community dynamics of soil micro-environments are influenced by root, fungal, and bacterial exudates that can preferentially select for functional classes of microbes. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM) fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are members of this community form symbiotic relationships with plants and play an important role in triggering induced systemic resistance (ISR), resulting in defensive “priming.’ Consequently, ‘primed’ plants can activate stronger and faster defense responses to future attacks by pathogens and insects. The biological system in this study involved four genotypes of barrel medic plants (Medicago truncatula), pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum), and microbial communities present in …

Characterizing Of Monoamine Neurotransmitters At The Hub Of The Central Auditory System, Patrick Wilson May 2021

Characterizing Of Monoamine Neurotransmitters At The Hub Of The Central Auditory System, Patrick Wilson

Master's Theses

In the United States, loss of hearing impacts approximately 48.1 million people. The cumulative effects of noise are experienced in every area of society whether occupational, environmental, or through aging. A number of studies have linked noise induced hearing disorders to changes in spontaneous neuronal activity in certain auditory brain regions, especially, the inferior colliculus, a region that integrates auditory inputs from both ascending and descending pathways. However, the exact neurochemical basis of these disorders remains elusive. Currently, there are several compelling pieces of evidence that implicate the monoamine neurotransmitter, dopamine, in auditory processing. Based on this data, we have …

Investigating The Role Of Atp-Binding Cassette Transporters In Drosophila Melanogaster Testis Stem Cells, Israel J. Wipf May 2021

Investigating The Role Of Atp-Binding Cassette Transporters In Drosophila Melanogaster Testis Stem Cells, Israel J. Wipf

Master's Theses

Multidrug resistance is among the most pressing obstacles in cancer treatment today. Resistance is thought to arise from the ability of cancer stem cells to efflux therapeutic molecules using a collection of membrane proteins called ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. There is strong interest in targeting ABC transporters to preserve and improve drug efficacy and reduce cancer recurrence. Many studies have been performed in vitro using cultured cell lines, but currently there is a lack of simple models in which to study ABC transporters in vivo. As a solution, I propose to use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster for the study …

Resistance To Rattlesnake Venoms In An Eastern Colorado Rodent Community, Neil Balchan May 2021

Resistance To Rattlesnake Venoms In An Eastern Colorado Rodent Community, Neil Balchan

Master's Theses

The grasslands of eastern Colorado are inhabited by two species of rattlesnakes, the Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) and the Desert Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus tergeminus edwardsii). An array of rodent species, both native and introduced, also occupy these grasslands, and serve as a varied prey base for the previously listed rattlesnakes. Predator-prey interactions in this system gain an additional level of complexity due to the presence of venoms, a chemical arsenal possessed by both rattlesnakes to incapacitate their prey. Rodents in other systems have demonstrated resistance to snake venoms, and there is potential for a similar dynamic to be present in …

Cannabigerol Attenuate Methionine/Choline Deficient Diet- Induced Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Symptoms In C57bl/6 Male Mice Via Modulating The Expression Of Cannabinoid Receptors, Nouf Aljobaily

Master's Theses

Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) is the advanced and more aggressive form of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). NASH is associated with severe hepatic fibrosis and inflammation. Methionine/choline deficient (MCD) high fat diet is known to induce NASH in a short period of time without showing signs of metabolic syndrome. Cannabigerol (CBG) is a plant-derived, non-psychotropic cannabinoid that has a potential anti-inflammatory effect. Other hemp extracts reduce the progression of NAFLD to NASH, whereas the impact of CBG on NASH is still unknown. Therefore, these studies aim to 1. Evaluate the therapeutic potential of CBG on reducing hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. 2. …

The Effects Of Sexual Surrogacy On Satisfaction, Happiness, And Well-Being, Ryan Liu-Pham May 2021

The Effects Of Sexual Surrogacy On Satisfaction, Happiness, And Well-Being, Ryan Liu-Pham

Master's Theses

The study tested the effects of sexual surrogacy, which I define as the desire to fulfill sexual needs with a surrogate target (e.g., celebrity crushes), on sexual satisfaction, relationship, happiness, and well-being. To examine this topic, I conducted a cross-sectional experimental study. After being asked about sexual desire toward either their current partner or a celebrity crush with a sexual desire behavior inventory, participants were asked to answer questions about their sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, happiness, and well-being. I predicted that desire toward both surrogates and interpersonal targets will predict higher levels of sexual satisfaction, happiness, and well-being but that …

Proposed Subtypes Of Anger Rumination: Brooding And Reflection And Their Associations With Aggression, Fayth Walbridge May 2021

Proposed Subtypes Of Anger Rumination: Brooding And Reflection And Their Associations With Aggression, Fayth Walbridge

Master's Theses

Rumination maintains, exacerbates, and is related to several maladaptive outcomes including negative affect (e.g., sadness, anger), symptoms of depression, and aggression in samples of nonclinical and clinical populations across developmental periods (e.g., McLaughlin & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011; Nolen-Hoeksema, 1991; Nolen-Hoeksema, 1996; Thomsen, 2006; Peled & Moretti, 2007; Yang, et. al., 2014). Recently, the construct of sadness rumination has been conceptualized as two distinct subtypes, reflection and brooding (Treynor, Gonzalez, & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2003). Brooding is considered maladaptive because feelings and situations are viewed through a negativistic lens and reflection is viewed as adaptive and uses a problem-solving approach (Lopez, 2010; Burwell & …

Application Of Machine Learning Techniques To Forecast Harmful Algal Blooms In Gulf Of Mexico, Bala Tripura Sundari Yerrapothu

Master's Theses

The Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) forecast is crucial for the mitigation of health hazards and to inform actions for the protection of ecosystems and fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). For the sake of simplicity of our application we assume ocean color satellite imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a proxy for HABs.

In this study we use a deep neural network trained on the 2-Dimensional time series proxy data to provide a forecast of the HABs’ manifestations in the GoM.Our approach analyzes between both spatial and temporal features simultaneously. In addition, the network also helps …

The Effects Of Using Behavioral Skills Training In Teaching Non-Aba Professionals To Implement Discrete Trial Training: A Meta-Analysis, Lindsey Bernard May 2021

The Effects Of Using Behavioral Skills Training In Teaching Non-Aba Professionals To Implement Discrete Trial Training: A Meta-Analysis, Lindsey Bernard

Master's Theses

This quantitative meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) for training non-applied behavior analysis (ABA) professionals to implement discrete trial training (DTT), as well as examining the methodological rigor of these studies using WWC design standards. Results indicate that BST produces large effects and the majority of studies either met design standards with reservations or met design standards. As a result, researchers and practitioners may be optimistic that BST is an effective approach to training non-ABA professionals to implement DTT.

A Collection Of Misfits, Kayla Gates May 2021

A Collection Of Misfits, Kayla Gates

Master's Theses

The following creative writing thesis, A Collection of Misfits, includes a critically informed introduction which places my works of fiction within the larger conversation of contemporary fiction. These short stories explore numerous ways in which characters fail to connect to the world around them. Characters falter with relationships, religion, and fitting in. The collection also explores how the use of humor works to bridge the fissure that can form around a character who fails to connect–creating a personal connection between reader and character. Taken in sum, these stories indicate that we, as humans, have a binding thread that intertwines …

Foundations Of Development: Perceptions Of Character And Leadership Development In Collegieate Judo Student Athletes, Hiroshi Yamaguchi

Master's Theses

Sports have been a tool for development within educational institutions for decades. In the United States, around 8 million high school students participate in high school sports. Very few go on to play for University Athletic Departments. Out of the 8 million students, only 495,000 (6.1%) of them will compete at NCAA schools (NCAA, 2020). Though the probability of competing in the NCAA's elite divisions is low, university students have plenty of opportunities to play and compete in sports via club/recreational sports programs, intramurals, and physical education courses. Estimates show that over 2 million higher education students in the United …

An Interdisciplinary Approach: Schizophrenia Derails Heteronormative Expectations In Psychological Narratives 2021, Bobbie Jo Weaver Apr 2021

An Interdisciplinary Approach: Schizophrenia Derails Heteronormative Expectations In Psychological Narratives 2021, Bobbie Jo Weaver

Master's Theses

Required introductory psychology courses teach students a general and oversimplified version of the immense number of subfields within Psychology studies, much like introductory literature classes compress different genera throughout history into a miniscule number of “representative” texts. Nevertheless, these footholds generate an entryway into a whole new world of (specialized) exploration. Reading a text such as The Quiet Room: A Journey out of the Torment of Madness by Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett provides a window for many students to crawl into one of Psychology’s darkest shadows, the field of abnormal psychology. Schiller’s non-fictional memoir, The Quiet Room, tells readers …

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen

Master's Theses

Falls in the disabled and elderly people have been a cause of concern as they can be immobilized by the fall and have no way to contact others and seek assistance. The proposed frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) short range radar (SRR) system, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) signals can provide immediate assistance by monitoring and detecting fall events. The unique characteristics of this system allow for a frequency-based modulation system to carry out triangulation and sense the location of the fall through the usage of a continuous chirp signal that linearly sweeps frequency. This project focuses on the development, design …

The Relation Of Physical Activity To Quality Of Life, Balance, And Cognition In Adults With Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study, Alexandra Ziepke Mar 2021

The Relation Of Physical Activity To Quality Of Life, Balance, And Cognition In Adults With Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study, Alexandra Ziepke

Master's Theses

As the 2nd most common neurodegenerative disorder, Parkinson’s disease (PD) is compiled of motor and nonmotor symptoms (Dashtipour et al., 2015). Motor symptoms include bradykinesia (slow movement), resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability, and nonmotor symptoms include cognitive delays (Steib et al., 2018). Many studies have found positive results using exercise as therapy, but few have inspected daily levels of physical activity on balance, cognition, and quality of life in adults with PD. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to examine the relationship between physical activity level and progressive symptoms of PD - specifically bradykinesia, balance, cognitive function, and …

The Role Of Med12, Notch1, And Notch3 In Adipose Stem Cell Self-Renewal And The Integrated Use Of Stem Cells In Public Educational Materials, Rebecca Hodnett

Master's Theses

Human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells offer significant therapeutic potential as an ethically sound, easily accessed source of adult stem cells. To harness their medically relevant properties, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms that control their fate. Cell state and differentiation of stem cells is determined by interactions of signaling pathways, chromatin modifiers, and transcription factors working to regulate cell-type specific gene expression profiles. Specifically, both the MED12 subunit of the Mediator complex and the Notch signaling pathway are known to individually influence hASC self-renewal. We investigated the relationship between Notch signaling and transcriptional cofactor, MED12, to elucidate a potential …

The Effects Of Increased Nacl Salinization On Riparian Plant Productivity And Decomposition Processes, Connor Gruntz Mar 2021

The Effects Of Increased Nacl Salinization On Riparian Plant Productivity And Decomposition Processes, Connor Gruntz

Master's Theses

NaCl salinization in inland ecosystems is increasing globally due to anthropogenic activity and may alter organism abundances and ecosystem processes. Because sodium is an essential nutrient for heterotrophs but not required by autotrophs, this salinization can alter species abundance and performance. Riparia may be particularly sensitive to increases in salinization. Here, I examined the Sodium Subsidy-Stress Hypothesis, which states that deviations from an organism’s optimal nutrient target can decrease abundance and performance, by studying the effects of NaCl salinization on plant chemistry, productivity, and decomposition rates in riparia. First, I selected three focal common riparian plants (water oak: Quercus nigra, …

Comparing Radiation Shielding Potential Of Liquid Propellants To Water For Application In Space, John Czaplewski

Master's Theses

The radiation environment in space is a threat that engineers and astronauts need to mitigate as exploration into the solar system expands. Passive shielding involves placing as much material between critical components and the radiation environment as possible. However, with mass and size budgets, it is important to select efficient materials to provide shielding. Currently, NASA and other space agencies plan on using water as a shield against radiation since it is already necessary for human missions. Water has been tested thoroughly and has been proven to be effective. Liquid propellants are needed for every mission and also share similar …

Factors Leading To Structure Loss On The Thomas Fire, Rodolfo Uribe Mar 2021

Factors Leading To Structure Loss On The Thomas Fire, Rodolfo Uribe

Master's Theses

The recent surge in fire activity and the extent of displaced communities as a result of wildfire has increased awareness of wildfire issues nationwide (Syphard et al., 2017). Climate change, population growth, and continued development in the wildland urban interface (WUI) has contributed to a growing body of research into the underlying causes of this continued destruction (Kramer et al., 2019). There is no doubt that statewide policies, such as defensible space or building regulations, are associated with home survival (Keeley & Syphard, 2019). However, the relative effectiveness of wildfire mitigation depends on a myriad of factors specific to individual …

Condition Monitoring And Fault Detection Of Blade Damage In Small Wind Turbines Using Time-Series And Frequency Analyses, Luke H. Costello Mar 2021

Condition Monitoring And Fault Detection Of Blade Damage In Small Wind Turbines Using Time-Series And Frequency Analyses, Luke H. Costello

Master's Theses

Condition monitoring systems are critical for autonomous detection of damage when operating remote wind turbines. These systems continually monitor the turbine’s operating parameters and detect damage before the turbine fails. Although common in utility-scale turbines, these systems are mostly undeveloped in distributed, small-scale turbines due to their high cost and need for specialized equipment. The Cal Poly Wind Power Research Center is developing a low-cost, modular solution known as the LifeLine system. The previous version contained monitoring equipment, but lacked decision-making capabilities.

The present work builds on the LifeLine by developing software-based detection of blade damage. Detection is done by …

The Effects Of Wort Oxygenation Scenarios On Fermentation Performance, Volatile Flavor Compound Development, And Flavor Stability In High Gravity Brewing, Ben Jabson Mar 2021

The Effects Of Wort Oxygenation Scenarios On Fermentation Performance, Volatile Flavor Compound Development, And Flavor Stability In High Gravity Brewing, Ben Jabson

Master's Theses

High gravity (HG) brewing has become the most used strategy for maximizing fermenter productivity in commercial brewing. While HG brewing has many benefits, the additional stress placed on the yeast due to the higher concentration of fermentable sugars in the wort can negatively impact fermentation performance and flavor compound formation. A proper dissolved oxygen (DO) level is vital to guarantee adequate yeast performance during HG fermentations. Dissolved oxygen is vital to yeast viability throughout the fermentation process, as yeast requires oxygen to synthesize vital cell membrane components needed for continued anaerobic growth and cell division. Previous research has demonstrated the …
