F. Scott Fitzgerald : His Materials And His Methods, Clifton Lanier Warren Jan 1954

F. Scott Fitzgerald : His Materials And His Methods, Clifton Lanier Warren

Master's Theses

From the time I was first introduced to Fitzgerald's writing through a reading of This Side of Paradise, when I was a freshman in college, his subject matter and technique as a novelist have interested me intensely. After reading the first novel, I was not satisfied until I had voraciously read his other novels. With each reading of another of his books, my interest increased. Later, when Mizener's valuable biography appeared, I was introduced to Fitzgerald the man and have found his life as fascinating as his writings. However I felt that none of the books about Fitzgerald completely presented …

Perseverative Phenomena And Shift Ability, Edward Ernest Ware Jan 1954

Perseverative Phenomena And Shift Ability, Edward Ernest Ware

Master's Theses

Numerous studies relating adjustment to perseveration are given in the first chapter. The present study investigated this relationship in order to ascertain whether those high in shift ability will make better social than emotional adjustments and those law in shirt ability will be better adjusted emotionally than socially. The logic for the above hypothesis has been that the ability to change, flexibility, is helpful in dealing with people and social situations, but may create an instability within the individual. Also investigated in this research were the relationship between intelligence, and shift ability, conservatism and adjustment, and also the relationship between …

A Colorimetric Coulometer, Clayton C. Roth Aug 1953

A Colorimetric Coulometer, Clayton C. Roth

Master's Theses

In the study of many electrochemical processes, such as, surface adsorption on electrodes, a simple, rapid, and relatively accurate coulometer that will measure .01 to 1.0 coulombs, would be extremely useful. This project was commenced to investigate the feasibility of an entirely different approach for coulometric analysis for application in this range.

This new type of coulometer utilizes a colorimeter for determining the amount of coulombs passed through coulometer cell. Consequently, any electrode process which of its own nature is color-producing, or a process which, in turn, can actuate a color indicator, is a potential reaction for this colorimetric couloumeter.

A Study Of The Logical Method As Compared With The Rote Method Of Learning Spelling, George Mccauley Barrett Jul 1953

A Study Of The Logical Method As Compared With The Rote Method Of Learning Spelling, George Mccauley Barrett

Master's Theses

Since public education has become a privilege for everyone, there has been a gradual change in the school systems and teaching techinques. The ideas of school, the relationship of school to the overall development of the individual and how the child learns have been in the educational spotlight for the past few years.

Teachers and parents often can not understand the development or the mental and physical growth of children in their relationship to school work. In recent years studies have been made concerning the various aspects of the child's development in various subjects. As new facts and new techniques …

Influences Of Mobility On The Academic Progress Of Pupils In The Fourth And Sixth Grades Of Quantico Post Elementary School, Gladys Taylor Dollins Jul 1953

Influences Of Mobility On The Academic Progress Of Pupils In The Fourth And Sixth Grades Of Quantico Post Elementary School, Gladys Taylor Dollins

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent mobility of pupils at the elementary school level affects their academic achievement. Is there correlation between the number of moves and retardation in academic achievement?

It has boon the opinion of the teachers and administrators of the Quantico Post Elementary School that the pupils who are forced to transfer so frequently are handicapped by the many changes. They have found it necessary at all grade levels to do a great deal of individual work as they have found these pupils to be very retarded in specific skills and fundamentals.

The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Hal James Bonney Jul 1953

The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Hal James Bonney

Master's Theses

The desire to discover the unknown is a characteristic within us all and, at times, it calls just a little louder than usual. There is no enjoyment in the reading of these pages other than than enjoyment of finding, thinking, and understanding that some of us seek.

Af ter studying the election of 1928, I have not only found items of history and political science, but all of the elements of social life narrowed down to the actions of people during a political campaign. Far beyond the reach of history we find in this story the actions of Americans and …

A Follow-Up Study Of The 1942 Graduates And The 1947 Graduates Of Jefferson High School, William Lorenzo Green

Master's Theses

It has long been an established fact that one of the most neglected factors in our program of secondary education is the lack of an effective follow-up program of the student after he leaves school. Such a program, carefully carried out and studied by those concerned with secondary education, can contribute much to determining the effectiveness of our high school program.
