An American Myth : James Dickey's "The Zodiac", Arthur Gordon Van Ness
An American Myth : James Dickey's "The Zodiac", Arthur Gordon Van Ness
Master's Theses
In the brief explanatory preface of "The Zodiac" Dickey says: "Its twelve sections are the story of a drunken and perhaps dying Dutch poet who returns to his home in Amsterdam after years of travel and tries desperately to relate himself, by means of stars, to the universe." The question immediately arises as to how a Dutch poet, and particularly one living in the Old World city of Amsterdam, relates to an American myth. What, in other words, does a Dutchman returning to his home in Holland nave to do with the New World?

Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris
Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris
Master's Theses
Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) received infective inocula of 5, 10, 20, and 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The effects of varying doses of larvae on prepatent period larval production, worm establishment, worm size, and fertility were studied. The aquatic gastropod Biomphalaria glabratta was the experimental intermediate host.
The duration of the prepatent period varied from 37 to 45 days. The shortest prepatent period was observed in animals that received the highest infective inoculum. The prepatent period showed a significant inverse relationship with increasing inoculum size. Larval production increased logarithmically, followed by a plateau phase. The number of larvae per …
Isolation And Characterization Of The Serum Ferroxidase Inhibitor, Melissa Page Calisch
Isolation And Characterization Of The Serum Ferroxidase Inhibitor, Melissa Page Calisch
Master's Theses
strong evidence suggests that the serum ferroxidases (ceruloplasmin andferroxidase II) promote the formation of Fe-III transferrin and thereby stimulate the turnover of iron from tissue stores. Ceruloplasmin is the major ferroxidase in human serum; whereas, ferroxidase II accotmts for an increased proportion of the activity in less highly developed animals. A large fold increase in total ferroxidase II activity was observed when both human and rabbit sera were subjected to gel-filtration on sephadex G-200. This indicated that whole serum might contain a potent inhibitor of ferroxidase II. Such an inhibitor has been isolated and purified to homogeneity by a combination …
The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood
The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood
Master's Theses
The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.

A Study Of Deuteronomic And Priestly Legislation With Particular Reference To Clean And Unclean Foods, Vivienne J. Fletcher-Watts
A Study Of Deuteronomic And Priestly Legislation With Particular Reference To Clean And Unclean Foods, Vivienne J. Fletcher-Watts
Master's Theses
Problem The laws of clean and unclean foods in Lev 11 and Deut 14: 3:21 have fascinated and perplexed generations of b ib lica l scholars. A great v ariety of suggestions have been proposed as reasons fo r the distin ctio n between the clean and unclean animals. Modern b ib lica l scholars claim, however, that the Levitical and Deuteronomic codes are in tern a lly inconsistent. These claims are of s u ffic ie n t magnitude that i f true might c a ll into question the assumption th at both were given by God at …
